The main objective of this work was to examlne the various stages of the production of industrial laminates based on phenol-formaldehyde resins, with a view of suggesting ways of improving the process economics and/or the physical properties of the final product. Aspects of impregnation, drying, and lamination were investigated. The resins used in all experiments were ammonia-catalysed. Work was concentrated on the lamination stage since this is a labour intensive activity. Paper-phenolic lay-ups were characterised in terms of the temperatures experienced during cure, and a shorter cure-cycle is proposed, utilising the exothermic heat produced during pressing of 25.5 mm thick lay-ups. Significant savings in production costs and improvements in some of the physical properties have been achieved. In particular, water absorption has been reduced by 43-61%. Work on the drying stage has shown that rapid heating of the wet impregnated substrate results in resin solids losses. Drying at lower temperatures by reducing the driving force leads to more resin (up to 6.5%) being retained by the prepregs and therefore more effective use of an expensive raw material. The impregnation work has indicated that residence times above 6 seconds in the varnish bath enhance the insulation resistance of the final product, possibly due to improved resin distribution and reduction in water absorption. In addition, a novel process which involves production of laminates by in situ polymerisation of the phenolic resin on the substrate has been examined. Such a process would eliminate the solvent recovery plant - a necessary stage in current industrial processes. In situ polymerisation has been shown to be chemically feasible.

Light curable dimethacrylate resin composites undergo free radical photopolymerisation in response to blue light (wavelength 450-500 nm) and may offer superior handling and setting characteristics for novel hard tissue repair materials. The current investigation aims to determine the optimum formulation of bisphenol-A glycidyl methacrylate and triethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (bisGMA/TEGDMA) or urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA)/TEGDMA resin mixtures and the effect of Bioglass incorporation on the rate of polymerisation (RP), degree of conversion (DC) and flexural strength (FS) of light-curable filled resin composites (FRCs). Experimental photoactive resins containing a range of bisGMA, UDMA and TEGDMA ratios and/or filled with non-silanised irregular or spherical 45S5-Bioglass (50 μm; 5-40 wt%) and/or silanised silicate glass filler particulates (0.7 μm; 50-70 wt%) were tested. RP and DC were analysed in real-time using nearinfrared spectroscopy. FS of resins and FRCs were determined using three-point flexural strength tests. UDMA/TEGDMA resins exhibited increased DC compared with bisGMA/TEGDMA resins (p<0.05). The addition of spherical particles of Bioglass had a detrimental effect on the FS (p>0.05), whereas they increased DC of UDMA/TEGDMA resins (p<0.05). Addition of irregular shaped Bioglass particles increased the FS of UDMA/TEGDMA resins up to 20 wt% Bioglass (p<0.05). The flexibility and strength conferred by the urethane group in UDMA may result in enhanced physical and mechanical properties compared with conventional resins containing bulky (bisGMA) molecules. Addition of 45S5-Bioglass with specific filler content, size and morphology resulted in enhanced mechanical and physical properties of UDMA/TEGDMA composites. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

PURPOSE: To compare and to evaluate the stability of the retentive force of cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) circumferential clasps (control) to those with an acetyl resin retentive arm. METHODS: Sixteen specimens with a couple of circumferential clasps were made using Co-Cr over a metal model providing 0.25 mm undercuts. Eight specimens were fabricated without the anterior retentive arm, which was made later using acetyl resin (Dental D). Insertion and removal simulation test was performed through 7250 cycles. The retentive force was recorded in Newtons (N) for periods corresponding to 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 years. The data were subjected to ANOVA and Tukey test to compare periods and to Student's t test to compare groups (α=0.05). RESULTS: Mean (SD) is presented for Co-Cr and resin groups, respectively: 8.09(3.05) and 2.79(1.57) in period 0; 10.48(4.25) and 3.32(1.92) in 1 year; 10.09(4.15) and 3.47(1.81) in 2 years; 9.87(4.30) and 3.46(1.87) in 3 years; 9.46(3.93) and 3.27(1.59) in 4 years; 9.63(3.79) and 3.41(1.59) in 5 years. There were significant differences for Co-Cr between periods of 0 and 1 (p<0.001), 0 and 2 (p<0.01) and 0 and 3 (p<0.05). In the resin group, no significant differences were found between periods (p>0.05). Comparisons between the groups showed statistical differences for all tested periods: 0 (p=0.0012), 1 (p=0.0013), 2 (p=0.0019), 3 (p=0.0031), 4 (p=0.0027) and 5 years (p=0.0014). CONCLUSIONS: Acetyl resin retentive arms, even if only in the anterior clasps, can significantly reduce the retentive force, but this force remained stable after 5 years of simulated use.

Studies of authigenic phosphorus (P) minerals in marine sediments typically focus on authigenic carbonate fluorapatite, which is considered to be the major sink for P in marine sediments and can easily be semi-quantitatively extracted with the SEDEX sequential extraction method. The role of other potentially important authigenic P phases, such as the reduced iron (Fe) phosphate mineral vivianite (Fe(II)3(PO4)*8H2O) has so far largely been ignored in marine systems. This is, in part, likely due to the fact that the SEDEX method does not distinguish between vivianite and P associated with Fe-oxides. Here, we show that vivianite can be quantified in marine sediments by combining the SEDEX method with microscopic and spectroscopic techniques such as micro X-ray fluorescence (µXRF) elemental mapping of resin-embedded sediments, as well as scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). We further demonstrate that resin embedding of vertically intact sediment sub-cores enables the use of synchrotron-based microanalysis (X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy) to differentiate between different P burial phases in aquatic sediments. Our results reveal that vivianite represents a major burial sink for P below a shallow sulfate/methane transition zone in Bothnian Sea sediments, accounting for 40-50% of total P burial. We further show that anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) drives a sink-switching from Fe-oxide bound P to vivianite by driving the release of both phosphate (AOM with sulfate and Fe-oxides) and ferrous Fe (AOM with Fe-oxides) to the pore water allowing supersaturation with respect to vivianite to be reached. The vivianite in the sediment contains significant amounts of manganese (~4-8 wt.%), similar to vivianite obtained from freshwater sediments. Our results indicate that methane dynamics play a key role in providing conditions that allow for vivianite authigenesis in coastal surface sediments. We suggest that vivianite may act as an important burial sink for P in brackish coastal environments worldwide.

In Italy, there has been little discussion about sex offenders. In fact, public and social actors’ attention has focused more on the victims of sex crimes rather than on criminals, so little importance is given to resocialization programs for paedophiles and rapists, even if this topic is worth exploring particularly in prisons. In the treatment phase, it is necessary and considered appropriate to identify an operational model aimed to orientate the sex offenders towards a process of analysis of their deviant behaviours. Through the methodology of the experiential group, the project carried out at Castelvetrano prison has highlighted the severe difficulties in personal analysis encountered by the sex offenders involved.
