This project was initiated by the Department of Personnel, now the Department of Administrative Services (DAS)– Human Resources Enterprise (HRE), to assist executive branch agencies in determining why employees leave their employ or state government as well as provide insight into past employee perceptions of their employer. As the workforce continues to age and at the same time the available workforce declines, employers must have data to manage their turnover effectively.

The European Social Survey. Methodological aspects

From a scientific point of view, surveys are undoubtedly a valuable tool for the knowledge of the social and political reality. They are widely used in the social sciences research. However, the researcher's task is often disturbed by a series of deficiencies related to some technical aspects that make difficult both the inference and the comparison. The main aim of the present paper is to report and justify the European Social Survey's technical specifications addressed to avoid and/or minimize such deficiencies. The article also gives a characterization of the non-respondents in Spain obtained from the analysis of the 2002 fieldwork data file.

A Filosofia Política em Paul Ricoeur. Um Olhar a Partir do Paradoxo Político

Este trabalho gira em torno da filosofia política de Paul Ricoeur, tendo, como foco principal, a compreensão do conceito de Paradoxo Político. Nas palavras de Paul Ricoeur, é preciso pensar conjuntamente quer a racionalidade quer a irracionalidade do político, porquanto racionalidade específica, mal específico, tal é a dupla e paradoxal originalidade do político. Neste sentido, cabe à filosofia política a tarefa de explicitar esta originalidade e elucidar o seu carácter paradoxal. Reflecte-se, igualmente, sobre o funcionamento do poder político, a sua autonomia, e questões de grande actualidade que o preocuparam, tais como, a fragilidade da democracia e o Estado de Direito, existentes na praxis actual bem como os eventuais abusos do poder. Segundo Ricoeur, o mal-estar actual das democracias deve-se essencialmente ao facto de que a soberania do Estado se tornar, no seu próprio seio, indecifrável em virtude da complexidade das esferas de pertença que governam a sociedade civil. Nesta Perspectiva, o projecto político-filosófico do pensador francês, afigura-se fundamental para iluminar a reflexão sobre o paradoxo político e a problemática do poder.

Education, disease prevalence and health service utilization in the Swiss National Health Survey "SOMIPOPS".

The relation among education, disease prevalence, and frequency of health service utilization was analyzed using data from the Swiss National Health Survey SOMIPOPS, conducted in 1981-1983 on a randomly selected sample of 4,255 individuals, representative of the entire Swiss population. The prevalence of several important cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, osteoarticular, and psychiatric disorders was higher among less educated individuals; only allergic conditions were directly associated with indicators of social class. More educated individuals reported lower frequencies of general practitioner visits, but higher frequencies of specialized consultations. These findings confirm that education is an important determinant not only of mortality but also of morbidity and health-care utilization and require careful consideration in terms of the planning and evaluation of health services.

Esferas (ocultas) de participação política dos jovens na cidade da Praia, Cabo Verde: do político ao parapolítico

Trabalhar esferas de participação política dos jovens na Praia, Capital de Cabo Verde, constitui o objetivo deste artigo. Partindo de uma análise qualitativa e quantitativa, mapeamos as instâncias reservadas à participação política juvenil e exumamos a trajetória emergente forjada pelos jovens no sentido de expressarem o seu relacionamento com as instituições políticas, sobretudo o Governo e os Partidos Políticos. Esferas mercantilistas e parapolíticas expressas em grupo de rap e gangues de rua constituem novas tendências organizacionais e participacionistas dos jovens praienses que, num contexto marcado por desigualdades e dificuldades de acesso às oportunidades sociais, encontram no mercado eleitoral possibilidades de afirmação social.
