Resumen: Walter Gropius desarrolla entre los años 1920 y 1922 un proyecto de monumento conocido como: Märzgefallenen-Denkmal (Monumento a los caídos de marzo). Se trata de un memorial dedicado a nueve obreros asesinados en Weimar, durante una manifestación en contra del Kapp Putsch (golpe de estado dirigido por Wolfgang Kapp). En el siguiente artículo se analiza la evolución del proyecto y de su implantación a través del análisis de la documentación gráfica de la obra. Observando muy especialmente las adaptaciones que transforman su diseño, condicionado por circunstancias externas. Nos hallamos ante un monumento de un gran valor histórico, político y social; capaz de una gran flexibilidad en la fase proyectual, y en cierto modo vestigio superviviente de todo un siglo. Abstract: Walter Gropius develops between the years 1920 and 1922 a monument known as: Märzgefallenen-Denkmal (Monument to the fallen of March). It is a memorial dedicated to nine workers killed in Weimar, during a demonstration against the Kapp Putsch (coup d'etat led by Wolfgang Kapp). The following article analyzes the evolution of the project and its implementation through analysis of the graphic documentation of the work. Noting especially the changes that transform the design, influenced by external circumstances. This is a monument of great historical, political and social interest; a work of art capable of great flexibility in its design stage, and the surviving vestige of a century. Background: Declining physical activity is associated with a rising burden of global disease. There is little evidence about effective ways to increase adherence to physical activity. Therefore, interventions are needed that produce sustained increases in adherence to physical activity and are cost-effective. The purpose is to assess the effectiveness of a primary care physical activity intervention in increasing adherence to physical activity in the general population seen in primary care. Method and design: Randomized controlled trial with systematic random sampling. A total of 424 subjects of both sexes will participate; all will be over the age of 18 with a low level of physical activity (according to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, IPAQ), self-employed and from 9 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHC). They will volunteer to participate in a physical activity programme during 3 months (24 sessions; 2 sessions a week, 60 minutes per session). Participants from each PHC will be randomly allocated to an intervention (IG) and control group (CG). The following parameters will be assessed pre and post intervention in both groups: (1) health-related quality of life (SF-12), (2) physical activity stage of change (Prochaska's stages of change), (3) level of physical activity (IPAQ-short version), (4) change in perception of health (vignettes from the Cooperative World Organization of National Colleges, Academies, and Academic Associations of Family Physicians, COOP/WONCA), (5) level of social support for the physical activity practice (Social Support for Physical Activity Scale, SSPAS), and (6) control based on analysis (HDL, LDL and glycated haemoglobin).Participants' frequency of visits to the PHC will be registered over the six months before and after the programme. There will be a follow up in a face to face interview three, six and twelve months after the programme, with the reduced version of IPAQ, SF-12, SSPAS, and Prochaska's stages. Discussion: The pilot study showed the effectiveness of an enhanced low-cost, evidence-based intervention in increased physical activity and improved social support. If successful in demonstrating long-term improvements, this randomised controlled trial will be the first sustainable physical activity intervention based in primary care in our country to demonstrate longterm adherence to physical activity. Orientation: Research that considers the effects of individual characteristics and job characteristics jointly in burnout is necessary, especially when one considers the possibility of curvilinear relationships between job characteristics and burnout. Research purpose: This study examines the contribution of sense of coherence (SOC) and job characteristics to predicting burnout by considering direct and moderating effects. Motivation for this study: Understanding the relationships of individual and job characteristics with burnout is necessary for preventing burnout. It also informs the design of interventions. Research design, approach and method: The participants were 632 working adults (57% female) in South Africa. The measures included the Job Content Questionnaire, the Sense of Coherence Questionnaire and the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The authors analysed the data using hierarchical multiple regression with the enter method. Main findings: Job characteristics and SOC show the expected direct effects on burnout. SOC has a direct negative effect on burnout. Job demands and supervisor social support show nonlinear relationships with burnout. SOC moderates the effect of demands on burnout and has a protective function so that the demands-burnout relationship differs for those with high and low SOC. Practical/managerial implications: The types of effects, the shape of the stressor-strain relationship and the different contributions of individual and job characteristics have implications for designing interventions. Contribution/value add: SOC functions differently when combined with demands, control and support. These different effects suggest that it is not merely the presence or absence of a job characteristic that is important for well-being outcomes but how people respond to its presence or absence.

In the wake of the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill, spatially and temporally spill-correlated biological effects consistent with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) exposure were observed. Some works have proposed that confounding sources from local source rocks, prominently coals, are the provenance of the PAHs. Representative coal deposits along the southeast Alaskan coast (Kulthieth Formation) were sampled and fully characterized chemically and geologically. The coals have variable but high total organic carbon content technically classifying as coals and coaly shale, and highly varying PAH contents. Even for coals with high PAH content (approximately 4000 ppm total PAHs), a PAH-sensitive bacterial biosensor demonstrates nondetectable bioavailability as quantified, based on naphthalene as a test calibrant. These results are consistent with studies indicating that materials such as coals strongly diminish the bioavailability of hydrophobic organic compounds and support previous work suggesting that hydrocarbons associated with the regional background in northern Gulf of Alaska marine sediments are not appreciably bioavailable.

BACKGROUND: Informal caregivers of palliative patients took part in existential behavioral therapy (EBT), a group intervention comprising mindfulness exercises to reduce psychological distress and improve quality of life. OBJECTIVES: This study examined what the participants perceived as helpful to cope with their loss during the first year of bereavement, particularly with regard to the EBT intervention. DESIGN: Sixteen problem-centered, semi-structured interviews were evaluated with content analysis. RESULTS: Two main categories were found: social support and self-regulation. Social support includes sense of belonging as well as emotional, cognitive, and practical help experienced from others. Mindfulness and acceptance, a clear focus on the positive, and orientation toward the future were helpful strategies of self-regulation; these were also part of the EBT intervention. Mindfulness was understood as permitting emotions and acceptance of one's inner processes, even if they were not pleasant, and was found to be helpful to stop ruminative thinking. CONCLUSIONS: The categories considered as being helpful parallel core elements of EBT and recent grief theories. The intervention was found to be supportive and met the needs of the participants. The interviewees appreciated the continuity of EBT support from palliative care into bereavement.

At the beginning of the 21st century, a new social arrangement of work poses a series of questions and challenges to scholars who aim to help people develop their working lives. Given the globalization of career counseling, we decided to address these issues and then to formulate potentially innovative responses in an international forum. We used this approach to avoid the difficulties of creating models and methods in one country and then trying to export them to other countries where they would be adapted for use. This article presents the initial outcome of this collaboration, a counseling model and methods. The life-designing model for career intervention endorses five presuppositions about people and their work lives: contextual possibilities, dynamic processes, non-linear progression, multiple perspectives, and personal patterns. Thinking from these five presuppositions, we have crafted a contextualized model based on the epistemology of social constructionism, particularly recognizing that an individual's knowledge and identity are the product of social interaction and that meaning is co-constructed through discourse. The life-design framework for counseling implements the theories of self-constructing [Guichard, J. (2005). Life-long self-construction. OBJECTIVE: Assertive community treatment (ACT) failed to develop in Europe, and its efficacy is debated. In Lausanne, Switzerland, ACT focuses on difficult-to-engage patients and aims to facilitate linkage with outpatient care through time-limited interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability and efficiency of time-limited ACT. METHODS: We retrospectively assessed social, clinical, and functional outcomes and motivation for treatment in 75 consecutively seen subjects treated between 2000 and 2002. RESULTS: With 70% of the interventions lasting less than 6 months, we observed significant improvement in most clinical and social problems, in collaboration, in motivation for treatment, and in social network support, despite high baseline levels of clinical and social problems. The number of hospitalizations decreased significantly. CONCLUSIONS: Time-limited ACT is a useful treatment for difficult-to-engage patients with severe clinical and social problems, and it facilitates linkage to care. This narrower target for ACT may facilitate its implementation in Europe.

Background: Medical and pharmacological direct costs of cigarette smoking cessation programmes are not covered by health insurance in several countries despite documented cost-effectiveness. Design: prospective cost identification study of a 9-week programme in Switzerland. Methods: A total of 481 smokers were followed-up for 9 weeks. Socio-demographic characteristics, number of outpatient visits, dosage and frequency of use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) as well as date of relapse were prospectively collected. Individual cost of care until relapse or programme end as well as cost per week of follow-up were computed. Comparisons were carried out between the groups with or without relapse at the end of the programme. Results: Of the 209 men and 272 women included, 347 patients (72%) finished the programme. Among them, 240 patients (70%) succeeded in quitting and 107 patients (30%) relapsed. As compared with the group relapsing by the end of the programme, the group succeeding in quitting was more often living in a couple (68% vs. 55%, p = 0.029). Their mean weekly costs of visits were higher (CHF 81.2 ± 6.1 vs. 78.4 ± 7.6, p = 0.001), while their mean weekly costs for NRT were similar (CHF 24.2 ± 12.6 vs. 25.4 ± 15.9, p = 0.711). Mean total costs per week were similar (CHF 105.4 ± 15.4 vs. 103.8 ± 19.4, p = 0.252). More intensive NRT at week 4 increased the probability not to relapse at the end of the programme. Conclusions: Over 9 weeks, medical and pharmacological costs of stopping smoking are low. Good medical and social support as well as adequate NRT seem to play a role in successful quitting.

Hajautetulla järjestelmäkehityksellä tarkoitetaan tietojärjestelmän kehitysprojektin hajauttamista maantieteellisesti jakamalla projektiryhmä virtuaalitiimeiksi eri paikkakunnille tai eri maihin. Tässä diplomityössä tutustutaan hajautettuun järjestelmäkehitykseen käsitteenä sekä perehdytään kehitysprosessin hajauttamisen ja virtuaalitiimien käytön potentiaalisiin hyötyihin ja ongelmiin sekä kirjallisuuden että eräässä yrityksessä toteutetun projektin pohjalta, sekä kirjallisuudessaesiintyviin ratkaisuihin riskien pitämiseksi mahdollisimman pieninä. Tältä pohjalta etsitään keskeisimmät projektin onnistumiseen vaikuttavat tekijät. Työssä haetaan kirjallisuudessa esitettyjä keinoja yhdistämällä ratkaisuja virtuaalitiimien potentiaalisten hyötyjen toteuttamiseksi ja riskien välttämiseksi. Kehitettyjä ratkaisuja tarkastellaan sekä kirjallisuuden esimerkkitapausten, että hajautetusta järjestelmäkehitysprojektista saatujen omakohtaisten käytännön kokemusten valossa. Työssä luodaan myös silmäys hajautettua työskentelyätukeviin työkaluihin. Kirjallisuuden ja osin myös käytännön kokemusten pohjalta merkittävimmiksi hajautetun järjestelmäkehitystyön tukemisessa osoittautuivat työryhmän viestinnän tukeminen, erityisesti silloin kun ryhmänjäsenet eivät voi käyttää äidinkieltään, ryhmän jäsenten välisen luottamuksen ja yhteenkuuluvuuden luominen, sekä työn koordinointi.

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) starting during childhood has been assumed to impair quality of life (QoL) of affected children. As this aspect is crucial for further personality development, the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) was assessed in a Swiss nationwide cohort to obtain detailed information on the fields of impairment. METHODS: Data were prospectively acquired from pediatric patients included in the Swiss IBD Cohort Study. IBD activity was evaluated by PCDAI and PUCAI. The age adapted KIDSCREEN questionnaire was evaluated for 110 children with IBD (64 with Crohn's disease 46 with ulcerative colitis). Data were analyzed with respect to established reference values of healthy controls. RESULTS: In the KIDSCREEN index a moderate impairment was only found for physical wellbeing due to disease activity. In contrast, mental well-being and social support were even better as compared to control values. A subgroup analysis revealed that this observation was restricted to the children in the German speaking part of Switzerland, whereas there was no difference compared to controls in the French part of Switzerland. Furthermore, autonomy and school variables were significantly higher in the IBD patients as compared to controls. CONCLUSIONS: The social support for children with IBD is excellent in this cohort. Only physical well-being was impaired due to disease activity, whereas all other KIDSCREEN parameters were better as compared to controls. This indicates that effective coping and support strategies may be able to compensate the burden of disease in pediatric IBD patients.

Työn tavoitteena on tehdä pohjatutkimus tarjoustoiminnan kehittämiseksi Larox Oyj:ssä. Työssä hahmotetaan haastatteluiden avulla tämänhetkiset ongelma-alueet tarjoustoiminnassa ja tiedonhallinnassa. Nykyisin suurimpina kehityshaasteina ovat rutiinityön manuaalinen hallinta, tiedon hankala saatavuus ja selkeiden yhteisten pelisääntöjen puuttuminen tarjoustoiminnassa. Näihin haasteisiin pyritään löytämään ratkaisuvaihtoehtoja. Työ sisältää teoriaosan, jossa käydään läpi projektin ominaispiirteitä, tarjoustoiminnan osuutta projektiliiketoiminnassa, elinkaarenaikaisen tiedonhallinnan keinoja sekä massaräätälöinnin toimintaperiaatteita. Tarjoustoimintaa pyritään kehittämään käsitellyn teorian, benchmark-vierailuilta saatujen ideoiden sekä haastatteluissa tulleiden toiveiden pohjalta. Tuloksena saadaan kehitysideat pitkäjänteiseen kehitystyöhön sekä nopeasti toteutettaviin toimenpiteisiin. Keskeinen kehitysidea on tarjouskonfiguraattorin kehitystyön aloittaminen. Sen avulla pyritään vähentämään tarjousinsinöörien työtaakkaa. Silloin tarjousinsinööreille jää aikaa toteuttaa osaamistaan haastavampien ja suurempien tarjouksien tekemisessä. Tuloksena on saatu neliportainen kehityspolku, jota kulkemalla päästään kohti hahmotettua tavoitetilaa. Työn tuloksia käytetään hyväksi aloitettaessa konfiguraattorin kehitys Laroxilla sekä kehitettäessä koko tarjoustoimintaa ja elinkaarenaikaista tiedonhallintaa yrityksessä.
