Magnetic and in vitro heating properties of implants formed in situ from injectable formulations and containing superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) embedded in silica microparticles for magnetically induced local hyperthermia

The biological and therapeutic responses to hyperthermia, when it is envisaged as an anti-tumor treatment modality, are complex and variable. Heat delivery plays a critical role and is counteracted by more or less efficient body cooling, which is largely mediated by blood flow. In the case of magnetically mediated modality, the delivery of the magnetic particles, most often superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), is also critically involved. We focus here on the magnetic characterization of two injectable formulations able to gel in situ and entrap silica microparticles embedding SPIONs. These formulations have previously shown suitable syringeability and intratumoral distribution in vivo. The first formulation is based on alginate, and the second on a poly(ethylene-co-vinyl alcohol) (EVAL). Here we investigated the magnetic properties and heating capacities in an alternating magnetic field (141 kHz, 12 mT) for implants with increasing concentrations of magnetic microparticles. We found that the magnetic properties of the magnetic microparticles were preserved using the formulation and in the wet implant at 37 degrees C, as in vivo. Using two orthogonal methods, a common SLP (20 Wg(-1)) was found after weighting by magnetic microparticle fraction, suggesting that both formulations are able to properly carry the magnetic microparticles in situ while preserving their magnetic properties and heating capacities. Selvitys Eduskunnan lisärakennuksen taidekilpailusta

The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how and why an art competition was arranged to select pieces for the parliamentary annexe building in Helsinki. There is an emphasis on the cultural production aspects of the research. For the purpose of comparison, the thesis also examines how art acquisition takes place in the cities of Helsinki, Salo and Vantaa, and how the so-called percentage principle has been used in these cities The research method involved thematic interviewing of four persons with central positions on the competition jury. Questions were also sent by e-mail to experts and other people with knowledge of the subject area. Although art competitions have been arranged in Finland for decades, very little relevant literature exists. In addition to the interviews, other relevant literature was also referred to, including parliamentary records. The crucial questions concerned why the art competition for the parliamentary annexe was arranged and whether, indeed, it is possible to compete artistically in this manner. The thesis also examined the relationship between art and architecture and how the best works were selected from the vast range of submissions. The answers were both honest and interesting. The thesis presents a step-by-step analysis of the competition's progress over two stages, and according to the specific rules for such competitions as laid out in Suomen Taiteilijaseura. Strict adherence to the rules of the competition created a number of problems, some of which are also studied. The primary reason for staging a competition was to be as democratic as possible, and eliminating any possibility of nominating a particular artist or artists to realise their own work within the annexe. The competition opened up the possibility to consider various artistic proposals, and no genres were ruled out in advance. This format ensured a good response and a total of 1719 proposals were received, of which six were eventually selected. One conclusion was that open competition may not be the best way to gather artistic proposals in such circumstances, but it is very democratic.

Ostoprosessin kehittäminen

Insinöörityön tavoitteena on selvittää Hakaniemen Metalli Oy ja sen tytäryhtiön High Metal Production ostotilakset ja tämän avulla tehdä analyysi tärkeimpien alihankkioiden taloustiedoista. Työssä perehdyttiin nykyiseen ostoluetteloon sekä kehitettiin sitä ABC-analyysin avulla. Tarkoituksena oli poistaa turhia alihankkijoita ja vähentää tilausten määrää nykyisestä. Ostotilauslistan laatimisen jälkeen koottiin taloustiedot tärkeimmistä alihankkijoista. Työn teoriaosassa käsitellään lisäksi logistiikan perusperiaatteita sekä logistiikan kilpailukyvyn kehittämistä. Työn tuloksena on pystytty vähentämään tilausten määrää sekä poistamaan tarpeettomia toimittajia yrityksen listoilta. Yritysten ostotilausten yhteenvedot sekä niiden yhteinen ostotilauslista on esitetty ainoastaan yrityksen käyttöön tarkoitetuissa liitteissä.

Liian hapokasta : terveyden edistämisprojekti 14-18 vuotiaille mielenterveyskuntoutujanuorille

Tämän toiminnallisen opinnäytetyön tarkoitus oli toteuttaa suun terveyden edistämisnäytelmä. HUS:n Kipinä ja Kunttari kuntoutumisosastoille, joiden asukkaat ovat 14-18-vuotiaita mielenterveyskuntoutujia. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli lisätä nuorten suun terveydenlukutaitoa. Näytelmän tavoitteena oli innostaa nuoria suun terveydenhoitoon. Terveydenedistämismenetelmänä käytettiin draamaa. Lukuisat tutkimukset viittaavat siihen, että nuorten elintavat ovat muuttuneet epäterveellisempään suuntaan. Alueelliset terveyserot heijastuvat myös suunterveyteen. Helsingissä on moniongelmaisia perheitä, nuoria ja lapsia suhteellisesti enemmän kuin muualla Suomessa. Opinnäytetyössä sovellettiin Precede-Proceed -terveyden edistämismallia, joka näkyy työmme suunnittelu-, toteutus- ja arviointivaiheessa. Suun terveydenedistämisnäytelmä ”Liian hapokasta” suunniteltiin ja toteutettiin opinnäytetyöryhmässä yhteistyössä työelämäyhteistyökumppanin kanssa. Näytelmä oli luonteeltaan osallistava. Tämä tarkoittaa sitä, että yleisö sai itse vaikuttaa näytelmän kulkuun valitsemalla kahdesta eri vaihtoehdosta sopivimman. Näytelmän keskeiset aihealueet valittiin näyttöön ja kokemukseen perustuen ja ne olivat: suun hoito, tupakointi, iensairaudet, karies ja ravitsemus. Tälle työlle sovellus- ja jatkomahdollisuudet voisivat olla tutkia millaisen terveyden lukutaidon nuoret saavuttivat. Työmme voi toimia myös esimerkkinä tulevien terveyden edistämisnäytelmien toteutuksille ja käsikirjoituksille.

Palveluntoimittajien etäkäyttöyhteydet

Tässä insinöörityössä tutkittiin kolmannen osapuolen etäkäyttöyhteyksien toteuttamismahdollisuuksia. Työ tehtiin Fingrid Oyj:lle, joka vastaa Suomen päävoimansiirtoverkosta. Työn ensimmäisessä vaiheessa opiskeltiin yksityisten virtuaaliverkkojen teoriaa. Virtuaaliverkkotekniikoiden käyttömahdollisuudet opiskeltiin käytännön kokemuksen kautta. Tämän jälkeen työssä selvitettiin SSL VPN -tekniikan teoriaa ja sen todellista toimintaa. Lisäksi tutkittiin kolmannen osapuolen yhteyksien heikkouksia ja vahvuuksia. Tämä työ mahdollisti myös tutustumisen tietoturvastandardeihin ja käytännön SSL VPN -toteutukseen. Työn tuloksena todettiin SSL VPN -arkkitehtuurin toiminta- ja käyttömahdollisuudet. SSL VPN todettiin tehokkaimmaksi ja joustavimmaksi tavaksi tehdä palveluntoimittajien etäkäyttöyhteydet. Lisäksi työssä on pohdittu palveluntoimittajien etäkäyttöyhteyksien ongelmien ratkaisuja. Työn ohella toteutettiin käytännön SSL VPN toteutus Fingrid Oyj:lle.

Violence, Burnout and Minor Psychiatric Disorders in Hospital Work

OBJECTIVE Identifying the violence suffered by the health team workers and their association with Burnout and minor psychiatric disorders. METHODS Cross-sectional study with 269 health team professionals of a public hospital in southern Brazil. Data were collected through the use of the Survey Questionnaire: Workplace Violence in the Health Sector, Maslach Inventory Burnout and Self-Report Questionnaire. RESULTS Workplace violence struck 63.2% of workers, prevailing mostly in women (p = 0.001), among nursing auxiliaries/technicians (p=0.014) and was associated with minor psychiatric disorders (p<0.05), as exposure to different forms of violence increased the chances of these disorders by 60% (CI 95%: 1.2-2.1). The three Burnout dimensions were also associated to violence at work (p<0.05). CONCLUSION Health workers experience violence in the workplace and this exposure is associated with Burnout symptoms and minor psychiatric disorders.

Leaf consumption and duration of instars of the cassava defoliator Erinnyis ello (L., 1758) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae)

The objectives of this research were to evaluate leaf consumption and the developmental time of the larvae of Erynnyis ello (L., 1758) (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae) reared on cassava, in order to obtain information for the integrated management of this pest. The larvae were reared on excised cassava leaves in Petri dishes and later in gerbox, and kept in chambers at 24 ± 2 ºC and 75 ± 10% RH. The total leaf area consumed by the larva to complete its development was 589.67 cm²; each of the five instars consumed, respectively: 1.89 cm²; 5.74 cm²; 17.48 cm²; 76.66 cm²; and 487.90 cm². The consumption by the first three instars was insignificant, and did not reach 5% altogether; the 4th represented 13%; the 5th presented a consumption significantly higher, about 82.7%. The total time for the larval development was 22.61 days, and the duration for each of the five larval instar was, respectively: 4.35; 3.19; 3.32; 4.52; and 4.94 days. The pre-pupal period lasted 2.29 days. Since the highest consumption is by the 5th instar larva, the control should be applied before this age to avoid heavier damages to the cassava crop.

Controle integrado de espécies de Simulium (Diptera, Simuliidae) por Bacillus thuringiensis e manejos mecânicos no riacho e nos vertedouros de tanques de piscicultura, Almirante Tamandaré, Paraná, Brasil

No Riacho dos Padres na Chácara Evíssima, numa microempresa de agronegócio com criação de peixes e animais domésticos, área de lazer e salão de eventos, localizada na Região Metropolitana de Curitiba, os simulídeos em grande proliferação causaram sério impacto com as picadas a tal ponto que dificultaram o convívio habitual. De janeiro a agosto de 2002, coletou-se 24.021 pupas por meio das quais foram identificadas as espécies: Simulium inaequale, Simulium perflavum, Simulium pertinax com 85,98% e Simulium orbitale, Simulium subnigrum, Simulium distinctum e Simulium incrustatum com somente 14,02% de freqüência. O combate a estas populações iniciado em 28 de fevereiro terminou em 08 de agosto de 2002. O controle integrado consistiu na aplicação de biopesticida Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) e em manejos mecânicos não só removendo os imaturos (ovos, larvas e pupas) por meio de escovação de vertedouros, mas também pela retirada de substratos naturais e antrópicos do leito. A densidade larvária média inicial, antes da aplicação de Bti no leito do riacho (75 m) e no último vertedouro, verificada em substratos antrópicos fitilhos (área 13.500 cm²), foi de 6,7 e 11,5 larvas/cm², respectivamente. Nestes habitats, o controle integrado com Bti de 1,77 a 2,09 mg/litro do ingrediente ativo, suplementado com manejos mecânicos, monitorado em substratos fitilhos (área 20.250 cm²), resultou em redução larvar de 72,61% a 99,97% e de 74,91% a 99,45%, respectivamente, nas vazões de 0,39 a 0,45 e de 0,38 a 0,43 m³/min. No primeiro vertedouro (área 5.110 cm²), porém, só com manejos mecânicos, atingiu-se a redução larvária de 53,81% a 99,59%. O controle efetuado reduziu as picadas hematófagas ao nível esperado, surtindo o efeito positivo almejado.

A genome-wide approach accounting for body mass index identifies genetic variants influencing fasting glycemic traits and insulin resistance.

Recent genome-wide association studies have described many loci implicated in type 2 diabetes (T2D) pathophysiology and β-cell dysfunction but have contributed little to the understanding of the genetic basis of insulin resistance. We hypothesized that genes implicated in insulin resistance pathways might be uncovered by accounting for differences in body mass index (BMI) and potential interactions between BMI and genetic variants. We applied a joint meta-analysis approach to test associations with fasting insulin and glucose on a genome-wide scale. We present six previously unknown loci associated with fasting insulin at P < 5 × 10(-8) in combined discovery and follow-up analyses of 52 studies comprising up to 96,496 non-diabetic individuals. Risk variants were associated with higher triglyceride and lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels, suggesting a role for these loci in insulin resistance pathways. The discovery of these loci will aid further characterization of the role of insulin resistance in T2D pathophysiology.
