Silicon nanowires were grown on Si substrates by electron beam evaporation (EBE) was demonstrated using Indium as an alternate catalyst to gold. We have studied the effect of substrate (growth) temperature, deposition time on the growth of nanowires. It was observed that a narrow temperature window from 300 degrees C to 400 degrees C for the nanowires growth. At growth temperature >= 400 degrees C suppression of nanowires growth was observed due to evaporation of catalyst particle. It is also observed that higher deposition times also leading to the absence of nanowire growth as well as uncatalyzed deposition on the nanowires side walls due to limited surface diffusion of ad atoms and catalyst evaporation.

Magnon contribution to the resistance of ferromagnetic film like Permalloy is investigated by magnetotransport measurements. We are able to observe and distinguish Anisotropic-Magnetoresistance(AMR)(1) and Magnon Magnetoresistance(MMR)(2) contributions clearly in PLD grown Permalloy films. A linear non-saturating longitudinal MR observed in high field regime for permalloy films could never be explained using AMR but only MMR can account for it.

We report a blood pressure evaluation methodology by recording the radial arterial pulse waveform in real time using a fiber Bragg grating pulse device (FBGPD). Here, the pressure responses of the arterial pulse in the form of beat-to-beat pulse amplitude and arterial diametrical variations are monitored. Particularly, the unique signatures of pulse pressure variations have been recorded in the arterial pulse waveform, which indicate the systolic and diastolic blood pressure while the patient is subjected to the sphygmomanometric blood pressure examination. The proposed method of blood pressure evaluation using FBGPD has been validated with the auscultatory method of detecting the acoustic pulses (Korotkoff sounds) by an electronic stethoscope. Hydroxyapatite (HA)-based biocomposites have been widely investigated for a multitude of applications and these studies have been largely driven to improve mechanical properties (toughness and strength) without compromising cytocompatibility properties. Apart from routine cell viability/proliferation analysis, limited efforts have been made to quantify the fate processes (cell proliferation, cell cycle, and cell apoptosis) of human fetal osteoblast (hFOB) cells on HA-based composites, in vitro. In this work, the osteoblast cell fate process has been studied on a model hydroxyapatite-titanium (HA-Ti) system using the flow cytometry. In order to retain both HA and Ti, the novel processing technique, that is, spark plasma sintering, was suitably adopted. The cell fate processes of hFOBs, as evaluated using a flow cytometry, revealed statistically insignificant differences among HA-10 wt % Ti and HA and control (tissue culture polystyrene surface) in terms of osteoblast apoptosis, proliferation index as well as division index. For the first time, we provide quantified flow cytometry results to demonstrate that 10 wt % Ti additions to HA do not have any significant influence on the fate processes of human osteoblast-like cells, in vitro.

One of the different issues limiting the wider application of monolithic hydroxyapatite (HA) as an ideal bone replacement material is the lack of reasonably good electrical transport properties. The comprehensive electrical property characterization to evaluate the efficacy of processing parameters in achieving the desired combination of electroactive properties is considered as an important aspect in the development of HA-based bioactive material. In this perspective, the present work reports the temperature (RT-200 degrees C) and frequency (100 Hz-1 MHz) dependent dielectric properties and AC conductivity for a range of HA-CaTiO3 (HA-CT) composites, densified using both conventional pressureless sintering in air as well as spark plasma sintering in vacuum. Importantly, the AC conductivity of spark plasma sintered ceramics similar to upto 10(-5) (Omega cm)(-1)] are found to be considerably higher than the corresponding pressureless sintered ceramics similar to upto 10(-8) (Omega cm)(-1)]. Overall, the results indicate the processing route dependent functional properties of HA-CaTiO3 composites as well as related advantages of spark plasma sintering route. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. We present temperature dependent I-V measurements of short channel MoS2 field effect devices at high source-drain bias. We find that, although the I-V characteristics are ohmic at low bias, the conduction becomes space charge limited at high V-DS, and existence of an exponential distribution of trap states was observed. The temperature independent critical drain-source voltage (V-c) was also determined. The density of trap states was quantitatively calculated from V-c. The possible origin of exponential trap distribution in these devices is also discussed. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

In the present investigation an attempt has been made to develop a new co-polymeric material for controlled release tablet formulations. The acrylamide grafting was successfully performed on the backbone of sago starch. The modified starch was tested for acute toxicity and drug-excipient compatibility study. The grafted material was used in making of controlled release tablets of lamivudine. The formulations were evaluated for physical characteristics such as hardness, friability, %drug content and weight variations. The in vitro release study showed that the optimized formulation exhibited highest correlation (R) value in case of Higuchi model and the release mechanism of the optimized formulation predominantly exhibited combination of diffusion and erosion process. There was a significant difference in the pharmacokinetic parameters (T-max, C-max, AUC, V-d, T-1/2 and MDT) of the optimized formulation as compared to the marketed conventional tablet Lamivir (R) was observed. The pharmacokinetics parameters were showed controlled pattern and better bioavailability. The optimized formulation exhibited good stability and release profile at the accelerated stability conditions. (c) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the present study, a novel air-assisted impinging jet atomization is demonstrated. A configuration in which a gas jet is directed on to the impinging point of two liquid jets is used to improve the atomization. The effect of liquid properties such as viscosity and surface tension, angle between liquid jets and gas injection orifice diameter on spray characteristics has been experimentally studied. Backlit imaging and particle/droplet imaging and analysis techniques are utilized to characterize the sprays. The experimental results indicate that the effect of liquid viscosity is significant on the liquid sheet break up formed by the impinging jets. However, surface tension does not affect the spray structure significantly in this mode of atomization. At low liquid jet velocity, the prompt mode of atomization is observed where as atomization occurs in classical mode at higher liquid jet velocity. Results showed that variation in the angle between liquid jets do not affect the breakup phenomenon significantly. The spray angle is computed by finding the angle between the lines joining the impinging point and spray edge at an axial distance of 15 mm downstream of the impinging point from the ensemble-averaged data over 100 spray images. It was observed that effect of liquid jets impinging angle on the spray angle is higher at higher liquid velocity. Higher viscosity liquids exhibit lower spray angles. Droplet size measurements indicate a radial variation in the spray. An overall Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD) value is obtained by combining the droplet statistics at all radial locations at a fixed axial location. A very interesting trend is that the SMD is constant beyond a critical Gas to Liquid Ratio (GLR) and momentum ratio for a large variation in liquid viscosity and surface tension. This observation has important ramifications for fuel flexible systems. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two Schiff base metal complexes Cu-SPETNNO3 (1) and Ni-SPETNNO3 (2) SPETN=2,2-propane,1,3-diylbis(nitrilomethyldyne)pyridyl,phenolate] ] with hydrogen bonding groups have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In both of the compounds nitrates occupy a crystallographic general position. In 1 the lattice nitrates are on the 2(1) screw axis while in 2 they are at the crystallographic inversion center. C-HOnitrate synthons (formed by the nitrate anions and peripheral hydrogen bonding groups of the metal complexes) are non-covalent building blocks in molecular-assembly and packing of the cationic Schiff base metal complexes (M=Ni2+, Cu2+), resulting in 2-D hydrogen bonded networks. The CuCu non-bonding contact in 1 is 3.268 angstrom while the Ni-Ni bonding distance in 2 is 3.437 angstrom.

Exploiting the performance potential of GPUs requires managing the data transfers to and from them efficiently which is an error-prone and tedious task. In this paper, we develop a software coherence mechanism to fully automate all data transfers between the CPU and GPU without any assistance from the programmer. Our mechanism uses compiler analysis to identify potential stale accesses and uses a runtime to initiate transfers as necessary. This allows us to avoid redundant transfers that are exhibited by all other existing automatic memory management proposals. We integrate our automatic memory manager into the X10 compiler and runtime, and find that it not only results in smaller and simpler programs, but also eliminates redundant memory transfers. Tested on eight programs ported from the Rodinia benchmark suite it achieves (i) a 1.06x speedup over hand-tuned manual memory management, and (ii) a 1.29x speedup over another recently proposed compiler--runtime automatic memory management system. Compared to other existing runtime-only and compiler-only proposals, it also transfers 2.2x to 13.3x less data on average.

Lithium-rich manganese oxide (Li2MnO3) is prepared by reverse microemulsion method employing Pluronic acid (P123) as a soft template and studied as a positive electrode material. The as-prepared sample possesses good crystalline structure with a broadly distributed mesoporosity but low surface area. As expected, cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge data indicate poor electrochemical activity. However, the sample gains surface area with narrowly distributed mesoporosity and also electrochemical activity after treating in 4 M H2SO4. A discharge capacity of about 160 mAh g(-1) is obtained. When the acid-treated sample is heated at 300 A degrees C, the resulting porous sample with a large surface area and dual porosity provides a discharge capacity of 240 mAh g(-1). The rate capability study suggests that the sample provides about 150 mAh g(-1) at a specific discharge current of 1.25 A g(-1). Although the cycling stability is poor, the high rate capability is attributed to porous nature of the material.

We report the synthesis of Pr6O11 microspheres self-assembled from ultra-small nanocrystals formed by the microwave irradiation of a solution of a salt of Pr in ethylene glycol (EG). The as-prepared product consists of microspheres measuring 200 to 500 nm in diameter and made of <5 nm nano-crystallites. The surface of these microspheres/nanocrystals is covered/capped with an organic layer of ethylene glycol as shown by TEM analysis and confirmed by IR spectroscopy measurements. The as-prepared product shows blue-green emission under excitation, which changes to orange-red when the product is annealed in air at 600 degrees C for 2 h. This change in luminescence behaviour can be attributed to presence of ethylene glycol layer in the as-prepared product. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), IR Spectroscopy (IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Although HA is highly biocompatible, one of the major disadvantages of HA include the lack of antibacterial property. In an earlier study, we demonstrated the potential role of magnetic field stimulation on bactericidal property in vitro. Following this, it was hypothesized that antibacterial property can be realized if bacteria are grown on magnetic biocomposites in vitro. In addressing this issue, this study demonstrates the development of HA-Fe3O4-based magnetic substrate with multifunctional properties. For this purpose, HA-xFe(3)O(4) (x: 10, 20 and 40wt%) powder compositions were sintered using uniquely designed spark plasma sintering conditions (three stage sintering with final holding temperature of 1050 degrees C for 5min). A saturation magnetization of 24emu/g is measured with HA-40%Fe3O4. Importantly, all the HA-Fe3O4 composites demonstrated bactericidal property by rupturing the membrane of Escherichia coli bacteria, while supporting cell growth of metabolically active human fetal osteoblast cells over 8d culture. A systematic decrease in bacterial viability with Fe3O4 addition is consistent with a commensurate increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS).

In the present work, we report spectroscopic studies of laser-induced plasmas produced by focusing the second harmonic (532nm) of a Nd:YAG laser onto the laminar flow of a liquid containing chromium. The plasma temperature is determined from the coupled Saha-Boltzmann plot and the electron density is evaluated from the Stark broadening of an ionic line of chromium Cr(II)] at 267.7nm. Our results reveal a decrease in plasma temperature with an increase in Cr concentration up to a certain concentration level; after that, it becomes approximately constant, while the electron density increases with an increase in analyte (Cr) concentration in liquid matrix.
