We found that Pd(II) ion (M) and the smallest 120 bidentate donor pyrimidine (L-a) self-assemble into a mononuclear M(L-a)(4) complex (1a) instead of the expected smallest M-12(L-a)(24) molecular ball (1), presumably due to the weak coordination nature of the pyrimidine. To construct such a pyrimidine bridged nanoball, we employed a new donor tris(4-(pyrimidin-5-yl)phenyl)amine (L); which upon selective complexation with Pd(II) ions resulted in the formation of a pregnant M24L24 molecular nanoball (2) consisting of a pyrimidine-bridged Pd-12 baby-ball supported by a Pd-12 larger mother-ball. The formation of the baby-ball was not successful without the support of the mother-ball. Thus, we created an example of a self-assembly where the inner baby-ball resembling to the predicted M-12(L-a)(24) ball (1) was incarcerated by the giant outer mother-ball by means of geometrical constraints. Facile conversion of the pregnant ball 2 to a smaller M-12(L-b)(24) ball 3 with dipyridyl donor was achieved in a single step.

The reversible transition of wurtzite to rock salt phase under pressure is well reported in literature. The cubic phase is unstable under ambient conditions both in the bulk and in nanoparticles. This paper reports defect-induced stabilization of cubic ZnO phase in sub 20 nm ZnO particles and explores their optical properties. The size reduction was achieved by ball milling in a specially designed mill which allows a control of the milling temperature. The process of synthesis involved both variation of milling temperature (including low temperature similar to 150 K) and impact pressure. We show that these have profound influence in the introduction of defects and stabilization of the cubic phase. A molecular dynamics simulation is presented to explain the observed results. The measured optical properties have further supported the observations of defect-induced stabilization of cubic ZnO and reduction in particle size.

Conceptual Design Phase is the most critical for design decisions and their impact on the Environment. It is also a phase of many `unknowns' making it flexible and allowing exploration of many solutions. Thus, it is a challenge to determine the most Environmentally-benign Solution or Concept to be translated in to a `good' product. The SAPPhIRE Model captures the various levels of abstractions present in Conceptual Design by Outcomes and defines a Solution-variant as a set of verifiable and quantifiable Outcomes. The Causality explains the propagation of Environmental Impact across Outcomes at varying levels of abstraction, suggesting that the Environmental Impact of an Outcome at a certain level can be represented as a collation of Environmental Impact information of all the Outcomes at each of its subsequent lower levels of abstraction. Thus a ball-park impact value can be associated with the higher-levels of abstraction, thereby supporting design decisions taken earlier on in Conceptual Design directing towards Environmentally-benign Design.

In this article, a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based hardware accelerator for 3D electromagnetic extraction, using Method of Moments (MoM) is presented. As the number of nets or ports in a system increases, leading to a corresponding increase in the number of right-hand-side (RHS) vectors, the computational cost for multiple matrix-vector products presents a time bottleneck in a linear-complexity fast solver framework. In this work, an FPGA-based hardware implementation is proposed toward a two-level parallelization scheme: (i) matrix level parallelization for single RHS and (ii) pipelining for multiple-RHS. The method is applied to accelerate electrostatic parasitic capacitance extraction of multiple nets in a Ball Grid Array (BGA) package. The acceleration is shown to be linearly scalable with FPGA resources and speed-ups over 10x against equivalent software implementation on a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor is achieved using a Virtex-6 XC6VLX240T FPGA on Xilinx's ML605 board with the implemented design operating at 200MHz clock frequency. It is known that all the vector bundles of the title can be obtained by holomorphic induction from representations of a certain parabolic group on finite-dimensional inner product spaces. The representations, and the induced bundles, have composition series with irreducible factors. We write down an equivariant constant coefficient differential operator that intertwines the bundle with the direct sum of its irreducible factors. As an application, we show that in the case of the closed unit ball in C-n all homogeneous n-tuples of Cowen-Douglas operators are similar to direct sums of certain basic n-tuples. A self-assembled monolayer of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) was prepared on a single-crystal silicon wafer (111) and its tribological properties were examined with a one-way reciprocating tribometer. The worn surfaces and transfer film on the counterface were analyzed by means of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that, due to the wear of the OTS monolayer and the formation of the transfer film on the counterpart ball, the friction coefficient gradually increases from 0.06 to 0.13 with increasing sliding cycles and then keeps stable at a normal load of 0.5N. The transfer film is characterized by deposition, accumulation, and spalling at extended test duration. Though low friction coefficients of the monolayer in sliding against steel or ceramic counterfaces are recorded, poor load-carrying capacity and antiwear ability are also shown. Moreover, the monolayer itself or the corresponding transfer film on the counterface fails to lubricate even at a normal load of 1.0 N. Thus, the self-assembled monolayer of octadecyltrichlorosilane can be a potential boundary lubricant only at very low loads.

Supersonic cluster beam deposition has been used to produce films with different nanostructures by controlling the deposition parameters such as the film thickness, substrate temperature and cluster mass distribution. The field emission properties of cluster-assembled carbon films have been characterized and correlated to the evolution of the film nanostructure. Threshold fields ranging between 4 and 10 V/mum and saturation current densities as high as 0.7 mA have been measured for samples heated during deposition. A series of voltage ramps, i.e., a conditioning process, was found to initiate more stable and reproducible emission. It was found that the presence of graphitic particles (onions, nanotube embryos) in the films substantially enhances the field emission performance. Films patterned on a micrometer scale have been conditioned spot by spot by a ball-tip anode, showing that a relatively high emission site density can be achieved from the cluster-assembled material. En el presente trabajo se evaluó el rendimiento agronómico de seis cultivares Brassica oleracea L. var. caPitata; Summer Autumn, Mighty YR, Perfect Ball, Mighty, Yessen #-631-4, Yessen # 33-18. El ensayo se estableció en la estacion las " Latas " Ubicada en Jinotega a 1, 400 m.s.n.m. con una precipitación media anual de 2.291 mm, y una temperatura promedio 21.86 ºC. La siembra se realizó en época de primera del año 1990. Empleándose un diseño Bloques al Azar (BCA) Con De los resultados obtenidos, se encontró cultivares que presentaron mayor crecimiento y desarrollo estuvo en primer lugar el cultivar Summer Auttumn, en segundo la linea Yessen # 631-4, y en tercer lugar la linea Yessen # 33-18. Respecto a la calidad del producto comercial, sus variables se mantuvieron estadísticamente sin diferencias significativas a pesar de diferir en cultivares que no presentaron buen desarrollo. El cultivar Summer, menor consistencia, seguida de la línea Yessen # 33-18. Al evaluar el rendimiento, se encontró que el cultivar Summer Autumn y la linea Yessen # 631-4 obtuvieron los mejores promedios. Seguidos por el cultivar Mighty YR y la línea de Yessen # 33-18, aunque Mighty YR presento baja tolerancia a la bacteriosis (Xanthomonas campestris P.).

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature on tribological properties of plasma-sprayed Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystal (QC) coating after laser re-melting treatment. The laser treatment resulted in a more uniform, denser and harder microstructure than that of the as-sprayed coatings. Tribological experiments on the coatings were conducted under reciprocating motion at high frequency in the temperature range from 25 to 650 degreesC. Remarkable influence of temperature on the friction behavior of the coating was recorded and analyzed. Microstructural analysis indicated that the wear mechanisms of the re-melted QC coatings changed from abrasive wear at room temperature, to adhesive wear at 400 degreesC and severe adhesive wear at 650 degreesC owing to the material transfer of the counterpart ball. It was also observed that the ratio of the icosahedral (i)-phase to beta-Al-50(Fe,CU)(50) phase in the coating was higher after test at 400 'C than that at 650 'C. The variation of the ratio UP of coating and of the property of the counterpart ball and coating with the temperature are the two main factors influencing the wear mechanisms and value of the friction coefficient.

Este estudio es una continuación de los realizados por el programa de mejoramiento de maíz de Nicaragua. El achaparramiento del maíz es causado por un micoplasma y transmitido por el Dapbulus maidis (Del & W) y D. Elimotus (Ball), conocidas como chicharritas del maíz. En Nicaragua el achaparramiento del maiz fue observado por primera vez en 1956. las variedades de maíz criollo y las introducidas, al sembrarlas en Santa Rosa, Managua han presentado muy poca tolerancia las primeras y cierto grado las segundas. En este trabajo se estudiaron varios factores que están relacionados con esta enfermedad y que son: localización geográfica, población estacional del vector, especies de Dalbulus, síntomas del achaparramiento en Nicaragua y obtención de germoplasma de maíz tolerante al achaparramiento. Para detectar la distribución en Nicaragua del Dalbulus, se muestrearon 400 manzanas en los quince municipios escogidos. En todas las zonas miestreadas se encontro Dalbulus maidis (DeL & W). Para cuantificar la poblacion del Dalbulus en Santa Rosa, Managua, se realizaron recuentos cada diez días; estos recuentos demostraron, que la mayor incidencia del vector corresponde a las épocas de menor precipitación. Estos factores, vector y precipitación, presentan una correlación de -0.67 que es altamente significativa. Los ejemplares de chicharritas del maíz colectados en las diferentes zonas de Nicaragua corresponde al Dalbulus maidis (DeL & W). Los síntomas del achaparramiento del maíz en Nicaragua se identificaron con observaciones realizadas en plantaciones de maíces comerciales y experimentales. En Nicaragua se presento con mayor frecuencia el achaparramiento del tipo Mesa Central, que presenta clorosis en toda la hoja, con coloración rojiza abundante en hojas adultas. En menor proporción se encontró el achaparriento del tipo Rio Grande, que muestra manchas cloróticas continuas, a lo largo de las hojas, y los bordes con poca coloración rojiza. En la obtencion de germoplasma de maiz tolerante al achaparramiento se realizaron tres ciclos de seleccion entre y dentro de entradas. Los materiales iniciales eran lineas y poblaciones, de estas solamente quedaron las ultimas. POsteriormente los grupos mas sobresalientes se cruzaron, realizando un ensayo uniforme de rendimiento, este ultimo es lo que corresponde a este trabajo. Entre los materiales de maíz que mostraron mayor tolerancia al achaparramiento se encuentran: Rep.Dom.Gpo.12, 13, 9, 10, 11, 2 y Comp. Cuba (x)-99y los cruces entre estos grupos. Estos materiales son de interés para la formación de nuevas poblaciones mas homogéneas. Los cruces de (1/2 Tuxpeño x 1/3 cubano) x (V-520C x Var.A,.Sel.B1.) es un material que puede utilizarse de inmediato para la formación de variedades comerciales de grano blanco.
