In this paper we study the role of incomplete ex ante contracts for ex post trade. Previous experimental evidence indicates that a contract provides a reference point for entitlements when the terms are negotiated in a competitive market. We show that this finding no longer holds when the terms are determined in a non-competitive way. Our results imply that the presence of a "fundamental transformation" (i.e., the transition from a competitive market to a bilateral relationship) is important for a contract to become a reference point. To the best of our knowledge this behavioral aspect of the fundamental transformation has not been shown before.

The recently proposed correspondence principle of Horowitz and Polchinski provides a concrete means to relate (among others) black holes with electric Neveu-SchwarzNeveu-Schwarz charges to fundamental strings and correctly match their entropies. We further test this correspondence by examining the greybody factors in the absorption rates of neutral, minimally coupled scalars by a near extremal black hole. Perhaps surprisingly, the results disagree in general with the absorption by weakly coupled strings. Though this does not disprove the correspondence, it indicates that it might not be simple in this region of the black hole parameter space.

The statistical theory of signal detection and the estimation of its parameters are reviewed and applied to the case of detection of the gravitational-wave signal from a coalescing binary by a laser interferometer. The correlation integral and the covariance matrix for all possible static configurations are investigated numerically. Approximate analytic formulas are derived for the case of narrow band sensitivity configuration of the detector.

Particle production in a cosmological spacetime with extra dimensions is discussed. A five-dimensional cosmological model with a three-dimensional space expanding isotropically like in a radiative Friedmann-Robertson-Walker model and an internal space contracting to a constant small size is considered. The parameters of the model are adjusted so that time variations in internal space are compatible with present limits on time variations of the fundamental constants. By requiring that the energy density of the particles produced be less than the critical density at the radiation era we set restrictions on two more parameters: namely, the initial time of application of the semiclassical approach and the relative sizes between the internal space and the horizon of the ordinary Universe at this time. Whereas the production of massless particles allows a large range of variation to these parameters, the production of massive particles sets severe constraints on them, since, if they are overproduced, their energy density might very soon dominate the Universe and make cosmological dimensional reduction by extradimensional contraction unlikely.

The holographic dual of a finite-temperature gauge theory with a small number of flavors typically contains D-brane probes in a black hole background. At low temperature, the branes sit outside the black hole and the meson spectrum is discrete and possesses a mass gap. As the temperature increases, the branes approach a critical solution. Eventually, they fall into the horizon and a phase transition occurs. In the new phase, the meson spectrum is continuous and gapless. At large Nc and large't Hooft coupling, we show that this phase transition is always first order. In confining theories with heavy quarks, it occurs above the deconfinement transition for the glue.

A fundamental tenet of neuroscience is that cortical functional differentiation is related to the cross-areal differences in cyto-, receptor-, and myeloarchitectonics that are observed in ex-vivo preparations. An ongoing challenge is to create noninvasive magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques that offer sufficient resolution, tissue contrast, accuracy and precision to allow for characterization of cortical architecture over an entire living human brain. One exciting development is the advent of fast, high-resolution quantitative mapping of basic MR parameters that reflect cortical myeloarchitecture. Here, we outline some of the theoretical and technical advances underlying this technique, particularly in terms of measuring and correcting for transmit and receive radio frequency field inhomogeneities. We also discuss new directions in analytic techniques, including higher resolution reconstructions of the cortical surface. We then discuss two recent applications of this technique. The first compares individual and group myelin maps to functional retinotopic maps in the same individuals, demonstrating a close relationship between functionally and myeloarchitectonically defined areal boundaries (as well as revealing an interesting disparity in a highly studied visual area). The second combines tonotopic and myeloarchitectonic mapping to localize primary auditory areas in individual healthy adults, using a similar strategy as combined electrophysiological and post-mortem myeloarchitectonic studies in non-human primates.

Este estudo analisa a dinâmica sobre a qual repousa a municipalização do ensino, após os anos 1980. Procuramos, inicialmente, retraçar as grandes linhas das políticas de educação que preconizam a democratização, tendo por referência a situação dos municípios do Estado de Santa Catarina na ampliação das oportunidades educacionais. Construímos, em seguida, um esquema de interpretação sociológica, colocando em evidência algumas lógicas subjacentes a essas políticas educacionais, a saber: uma lógica segregativa, relacionada aos processos pedagógicos de caráter excludente; uma lógica integradora, que faz referência ao princípio meritocrático procurando explicar as posições dos indivíduos nos diversos grupos sociais; uma lógica descentralizadora, que tem por objetivo reorientar o poder decisório predominante no interior dos sistemas de ensino; uma lógica municipalista, associada à democratização e à repartição das responsabilidades em termos de escolarização fundamental.

The slow-phase velocity of nystagmus is one of the most sensitive parameters of vestibular function and is currently the standard for evaluating the caloric test. However, the assessment of this parameter requires recording the response by using nystagmography. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether frequency and duration of the caloric nystagmus, as measured by using a clinical test with Frenzel glasses, could predict the result of the recorded test. The retrospective analysis of 222 caloric test results recorded by means of electronystagmography has shown a good association between the 3 parameters for unilateral weakness. The asymmetry observed in the velocity can be predicted by a combination of frequency and duration. On the other hand, no relationship was observed between the parameters for directional preponderance. These results indicate that a clinical caloric test with frequency and duration as parameters can be used to predict the unilateral weakness, which would be obtained by use of nystagmography. We propose an evaluation of the caloric test on the basis of diagrams combining the 3 response parameters.

Este artigo introduz um modelo conceitual que relaciona fatores intra e extra-escolares a uma medida de desempenho cognitivo dos alunos. Com a ajuda desse esquema revisam-se as evidências presentes na literatura educacional sobre as possibilidades de melhoria dos resultados cognitivos dos alunos do ensino fundamental. Muitos dos resultados das pesquisas relatadas na literatura internacional não foram validados por estudos empíricos no Brasil até o momento. Os melhores dados para estudo do assunto disponíveis no país são os do Sistema Nacional de Avaliação da Educação Básica - Saeb, que têm muitas limitações. No entanto, já é possível garantir que, considerando o nível atual do desempenho dos alunos, há ações que podem ser realizadas no nível da escola com grande potencial de melhoria das proficiências dos alunos. Assim, neste momento, é preciso enfatizar as políticas escolares, tendo em vista que elas só serão viáveis com a implantação da autonomia das escolas, preceito já estabelecido em lei, mas ainda não completamente implementado.

O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar se a participação de professores de redes municipais do Estado de São Paulo em um programa de licenciatura em nível superior, oferecido por duas renomadas universidades paulistas, ocasionava alteração nas posturas docentes dos alunos-professores. Os dados - respostas de 1.272 participantes a 17 simulações de situações problemas apresentadas no início e no final do programa - foram analisadas por meio de procedimentos estatísticos. Os resultados mostraram que 30% dos alunos-professores sofreram modificações de perfil nas posturas estudadas no sentido esperado. Isso parece indicar que os participantes apresentaram, ao final do Programa, maior tendência para dominar e planejar situações didáticas que envolviam os conteúdos básicos das áreas de conhecimento; reconhecer e empregar adequadamente os recursos e tecnologias disponíveis no processo de ensino-aprendizagem; e valer-se da teoria para orientar a prática docente e a avaliação.

This paper estimates a model of airline competition for the Spanish air transport market. I test the explanatory power of alternative oligopoly models with capacity constraints. In addition, I analyse the degree of density economies. Results show that Spanish airlines conduct follows a price-leadership scheme so that it is less competitive than the Cournot solution. I also find evidence that thin routes can be considered as natural monopolies

Este artigo identifica um conflito entre dois conceitos de Ética no currículo das escolas públicas de ensino fundamental no Brasil contemporâneo. De um lado, a Ética laica, fundamentada nos provisórios consensos político-ideológicos; de outro, a Ética religiosa, convergente com uma Educação Moral e Cívica de conteúdo religioso. Esse conflito conceitual é explicado pelo autor como produto de um conflito político em torno da autonomia do campo educacional.
