Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), is a disease with world wide consequences, affecting nearly a third of the world's population. The established vaccine for TB; an attenuated strain of Mycobacterium bovis Calmette Guerin (BCG), has existed virtually unchanged since 1921. Intensive research is focused on developing a TB vaccine that can surpass and improve the existing BCG vaccine. Lactoferrin, an iron binding protein found in mucosal secretions and granules of neutrophils was hypothesized to be an ideal adjuvant to enhance the efficacy of the BCG vaccine. Specifically, Lactoferrin enhanced the ratio of IL-12:IL-10 production from macrophages stimulated with LFS or infected with BCG, indicating the potential to affect T-cell development in vivo. Five different vaccination protocols were investigated for generation of host protective responses against MTB infection using Lactoferrin admixed to the BCG vaccine. Mice immunized and boosted at 2 weeks with BCG/Lactofefrin increased host protection against MTB infection by decreasing organ bacterial load and reducing lung histopathology. The observed postchallenge results paralleled with increasing production of IFN-γ, IL-2, TNF-α, and IL-12 from BCG stimulated splenocytes. In vitro studies examined possible mechanisms of Lactoferrin action on BCG infected macrophages and dendritic cells. Addition of Lactoferrin to BCG infected macrophages and dendritic cells increased stimulation of presensitized CD3+ and CD4+ T-cells. Analysis by fluorescent activated cell sorting (FACS) revealed an increase in surface expression of MHC I and decreased ratio of CD80/86 from BCG infected macrophages cultured with Lactoferrin. In contrast, Lactoferrin decreased surface expression of MHC I, MHC II, CD80, CD86, and CD40, but increased CD 11c, from BCG infected dendritic cells, indicating involvement of adhesion molecules. Overall, these studies indicate that Lactoferrin is a useful and effective adjuvant to improve efficacy of the BCG vaccine by enhancing generation of mycobacterial antigen specific T-cell responses through promotion of antigen presentation and T-cell stimulation.^

Children and adults frequently skip breakfast and rates are currently increasing. In addition, the food choices made for breakfast are not always healthy ones. Breakfast skipping, in conjunction with unhealthy breakfast choices, leads to impaired cognitive functioning, poor nutrient intake, and overweight. In response to these public health issues, Skip To Breakfast, a behaviorally based school and family program, was created to increase consistent and healthful breakfast consumption among ethnically diverse fifth grade students and their families, using Intervention Mapping™. Four classroom lessons and four parent newsletters were used to deliver the intervention. For this project, a healthy, "3 Star Breakfast" was promoted, and included a serving each of dairy product, whole grain, and fruit, each with an emphasis on being low in fat and sugar. The goal of this project was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention. A pilot-test of the intervention was conducted in one classroom, in a school in Houston, during the Fall 2007 semester. A qualitative evaluation of the intervention was conducted, which included focus groups with students, phone interviews of parents, process evaluation data from the classroom teacher, and direct observation. Sixteen students and six parents participated in the study. Data were recorded and themes were identified. Initial results showed there is a need for such programs. Based on the initial feedback, edits were made to the intervention and program. Results showed high acceptability among the teacher, students, and parents. It became apparent that students were not reliably getting the parent newsletters to their parents to read, so a change to the protocol was made, in which students will receive incentives for having parents read newsletters and return signed forms, to increase parent participation. Other changes included small modifications to the curriculum, such as, clarifying instructions, changing in-class assignments to homework assignments, and including background reading materials for the teacher. The main trial is planned to be carried out in Spring 2008, in two elementary schools, utilizing four, fifth grade classes from each, with one school acting as the control and one as the intervention school. Results from this study can be used as an adjunct to the Coordinated Approach To Child Health (CATCH) program. ^

Background. Pharmaceutical-sponsored patient assistance programs (PAPs) are charity programs that provide free or reduced-priced medications to eligible patients. PAPs have the potential to improve prescription drug accessibility for patients but currently there is limited information about their use and effectiveness. ^ Objectives and methods. This dissertation described the use of PAPs in the U.S. through the conduct of two studies: (1) a systematic review of primary studies of PAPs from commercially-published and “grey” literature sources; and (2) a retrospective, cross-sectional study of cancer patients' use of PAPs at a tertiary care cancer outpatient center. ^ Results. (1) The systematic review identified 33 studies: 15 evaluated the impact of PAP enrollment assistance programs on patient healthcare outcomes; 7 assessed institutional costs of providing enrollment assistance; 7 surveyed stakeholders; 4 examined other aspects. Standardized mean differences calculated for disease indicator outcomes (most of which were single group, pre-posttest designs) showed significant decreases in glycemic and lipid control, and inconsistent results for blood pressure. Grey literature abstracts reported insufficient statistics for calculations. Study heterogeneity made weighted summary estimates inappropriate. Economic analyses indicated positive financial benefits to institutions providing enrollment assistance (cost) compared to the wholesale value of the medications provided (benefit); analyses did not value health outcomes. Mean quality of reporting scores were higher for observational studies in commercially-published articles versus full text, grey literature reports. (2) The cross-sectional study found that PAP outpatients were significantly more likely to be uninsured, indigent, and < 65 years old than non-PAP patients. Nearly all non-PAP and PAP prescriptions were for non-cancer conditions, either for co-morbidities (e.g., hypertension) or the management of treatment side effects (e.g., pain). Oral chemotherapies from PAPs were significantly more likely to be for breast versus other cancers, and be a newer, targeted versus traditional chemotherapy.^ Conclusions. In outpatient settings, PAP enrollment assistance plus additional medication services (e.g., counseling, reminders, and free samples) is associated with improved disease indicators for patients. Healthcare institutions, including cancer centers, can offset financial losses from uncompensated drug costs and recoup costs invested in enrollment assistance programs by procuring free PAP medications. Cancer patients who are indigent and uninsured may be able to access more outpatient medications for their supportive care needs through PAPs, than for cancer treatment options like oral chemotherapies. Because of the selective availability of drugs through PAPs, there may be more options for newer, oral, targeted chemotherapies for the treatment breast cancer versus other for other cancers.^

The main objective of this study was to attempt to develop some indicators for measuring the food safety status of a country. A conceptual model was put forth by the investigator. The assumption was that food safety status was multifactorily influenced by medico-health levels, food-nutrition programs, and consumer protection activities. However, all these in turn depended upon socio-economic status of the country.^ Twenty-six indicators were reviewed and examined. Seventeen were first screened and three were finally selected, by the stepwise multiple regression analysis, to reflect the food safety status. Sixty-one countries/areas were included in this study.^ The three indicators were life expectancy at birth with multiple correlation coefficient (R2 = 34.62%), adult literacy rate (R2 = 29.66%), and child mortality rate for ages 1-4 (R2 = 9.99%). They showed a cumulative R2 of 57.79%. ^

Gamma irradiation has been widely used as a breeding technique to obtain new cultivars in ornamental species such as Alstroemeria, where several cultivars have been obtained through rhizome radiation. The optimum dosage for an appropriate induction of mutation must be considered for breeding purposes and it depends mainly on plant susceptibility. Thus in this study in vitro cultured rhizomes of Alstroemeria aurea were irradiated with a gamma source using different dosages to evaluate the direct effect produced. Damage and number of rhizome sprouting were observed and recorded during 61 days after irradiation. At the end of this period, rhizomes were weighted and mortality was evaluated. Both mortality and weight increased depending on dosage. All irradiated rhizomes showed early sprouting in comparison with control (0 Gy) and no significant difference in final number of shoots after 61 days among irradiated treatments was observed. Bleaching and necrosis was observed in all irradiated rhizomes and was more evident at higher doses. LD50 was established at about 40 Gy and the optimum dosage to induce mutation was suggested between 2.5 and 5 Gy, when the growth was reduced in 50%, and probably this dosage could be used for breeding purposes.

Radiative shock waves play a pivotal role in the transport energy into the stellar medium. This fact has led to many efforts to scale the astrophysical phenomena to accessible laboratory conditions and their study has been highlighted as an area requiring further experimental investigations. Low density material with high atomic mass is suitable to achieve radiative regime, and, therefore, low density xenon gas is commonly used for the medium in which the radiative shock propagates. In this work the averageionization and the thermodynamicregimes of xenonplasmas are determined as functions of the matter density and temperature in a wide range of plasma conditions. The results obtained will be applied to characterize blastwaveslaunched in xenonclusters

There are large numbers of business communities in India which neither had any formal education nor they took any professional training but still they contribute in successful business formation. Their presence can be felt in all areas of business. Still there is a big professional gap between the educational institutes, specially the B-Schools and this independent business community. With the help of this paper an effort is made to develop a Two-Way learning relationship for the mutual benefit of both entities. It will also highlight the role of an educational institute beyond academics for the well being of society. This may lead to derive and develop the exchange of innovative business ideas and framing the suitable policies for long term sustainability in today´s competitive arena. The study conducted by researcher with a sample size of 100 which includes a mix of well known academic professionals, MBA students and non academic business professionals has revealed that there is a need of an exchange program for the mutual benefits. There exists a big professional gap in this area which can be filled with the active and effective initiative by management institutes. An effort is made in this paper to highlight this gap and to suggest some framework to bridge the gap
