Concurrent Aggregates (CA): An Object-Oriented Language for Fine-Grained Message-Passing Machines

Fine-grained parallel machines have the potential for very high speed computation. To program massively-concurrent MIMD machines, programmers need tools for managing complexity. These tools should not restrict program concurrency. Concurrent Aggregates (CA) provides multiple-access data abstraction tools, Aggregates, which can be used to implement abstractions with virtually unlimited potential for concurrency. Such tools allow programmers to modularize programs without reducing concurrency. I describe the design, motivation, implementation and evaluation of Concurrent Aggregates. CA has been used to construct a number of application programs. Multi-access data abstractions are found to be useful in constructing highly concurrent programs.

Growth and Characterization of LiCoO₂ Thin Films for Microbatteries

LiCoO₂thin films have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on stainless steel and SiO₂/Si substrates. The film deposited at 600°C in an oxygen partial pressure of 100mTorr shows an excellent crystallinity, stoichiometry and no impurity phase present. Microstructure and surface morphology of thin films were examined using a scanning electron microscope. The electrochemical properties of the thin films were studied with cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge techniques in the potential range 3.0-4.2 V. The initial discharge capacity of the LiCoO2 thin films deposited on the stainless steel and SiO₂/Si substrates reached 23 and 27 µAh/cm², respectively.

Investigation of aspect ratio of hole drilling from micro to nanoscale via focused ion beam fine milling

Holes with different sizes from microscale to nanoscale were directly fabricated by focused ion beam (FIB) milling in this paper. Maximum aspect ratio of the fabricated holes can be 5:1 for the hole with large size with pure FIB milling, 10:1 for gas assistant etching, and 1:1 for the hole with size below 100 nm. A phenomenon of volume swell at the boundary of the hole was observed. The reason maybe due to the dose dependence of the effective sputter yield in low intensity Gaussian beam tail regions and redeposition. Different materials were used to investigate variation of the aspect ratio. The results show that for some special material, such as Ni-Be, the corresponding aspect ratio can reach 13.8:1 with Cl₂ assistant etching, but only 0.09:1 for Si(100) with single scan of the FIB.

Corner Flows in Free Liquid Films

A lubrication-flow model for a free film in a corner is presented. The model, written in the hyperbolic coordinate system ξ = x² – y², η = 2xy, applies to films that are thin in the η direction. The lubrication approximation yields two coupled evolution equations for the film thickness and the velocity field which, to lowest order, describes plug flow in the hyperbolic coordinates. A free film in a corner evolving under surface tension and gravity is investigated. The rate of thinning of a free film is compared to that of a film evolving over a solid substrate. Viscous shear and normal stresses are both captured in the model and are computed for the entire flow domain. It is shown that normal stress dominates over shear stress in the far field, while shear stress dominates close to the corner.

Trans-Ancestral Studies Fine Map the SLE-Susceptibility Locus TNFSF4

We previously established an 80 kb haplotype upstream of TNFSF4 as a susceptibility locus in the autoimmune disease SLE. SLE-associated alleles at this locus are associated with inflammatory disorders, including atherosclerosis and ischaemic stroke. In Europeans, the TNFSF4 causal variants have remained elusive due to strong linkage disequilibrium exhibited by alleles spanning the region. Using a trans-ancestral approach to fine-map the locus, utilising 17,900 SLE and control subjects including Amerindian/Hispanics (1348 cases, 717 controls), African-Americans (AA) (1529, 2048) and better powered cohorts of Europeans and East Asians, we find strong association of risk alleles in all ethnicities; the AA association replicates in African-American Gullah (152,122). The best evidence of association comes from two adjacent markers: rs2205960-T (P = 1.71×10-34, OR = 1.43[1.26-1.60]) and rs1234317-T (P = 1.16×10-28, OR = 1.38[1.24-1.54]). Inference of fine-scale recombination rates for all populations tested finds the 80 kb risk and non-risk haplotypes in all except African-Americans. In this population the decay of recombination equates to an 11 kb risk haplotype, anchored in the 5′ region proximal to TNFSF4 and tagged by rs2205960-T after 1000 Genomes phase 1 (v3) imputation. Conditional regression analyses delineate the 5′ risk signal to rs2205960-T and the independent non-risk signal to rs1234314-C. Our case-only and SLE-control cohorts demonstrate robust association of rs2205960-T with autoantibody production. The rs2205960-T is predicted to form part of a decameric motif which binds NF-κBp65 with increased affinity compared to rs2205960-G. ChIP-seq data also indicate NF-κB interaction with the DNA sequence at this position in LCL cells. Our research suggests association of rs2205960-T with SLE across multiple groups and an independent non-risk signal at rs1234314-C. rs2205960-T is associated with autoantibody production and lymphopenia. Our data confirm a global signal at TNFSF4 and a role for the expressed product at multiple stages of lymphocyte dysregulation during SLE pathogenesis. Aprendiendo a aprender : Learning trough films.

Material pensado para su utilización tanto dentro como fuera del aula (autoaprendizaje), que se presenta en dos tomos. En el primero se incluyen guías, tanto para el profesorado como para el alumnado, para el visionado de cuatro películas en lengua inglesa, disponibles en el mercado. El objeto de estas guías es evaluar el contenido de las películas y así contribuir a mejorar el aprendizaje de la lengua inglesa. Con la misma finalidad, en el segundo tomo se presentan 25 escenas cortas en las que se trabajan los diferentes aspectos de la lengua. Cada secuencia va precedida de una ficha técnica en la que se detalla la película de la que se ha extraído, un título descriptivo, duración y localización en la cinta y todos los aspectos metodológicos para su elección -conceptos, estrategias, actitudes y objetivos-. Se incluyen tres fichas-tipo de evaluación para el alumnado: My work, Video agenda y My teacher reports; y una para el profesorado: Student record. Con ellas se pretende establecer un canal de comunicación abierto entre profesorado y alumnado que optimice el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje y favorezca una enseñanza más personal e individualizada.

Representaciones identitarias del ecuatoriano en tres films nacionales

La siguiente investigación analiza a lo largo de su desarrollo cómo se construyen las representaciones identitarias del ecuatoriano, en los personajes principales de tres filmes nacionales: Zuquillo Exprés, A tus Espaldas y Prometeo Deportado. Además de definir los elementos socioculturales, audiovisuales, clichés y estereotipos que caracterizan a un personaje principal. Es por ello que el análisis inicia con la indagación de conceptos claves de diferentes autores que permitan establecer el punto de partida para la definición de: identidad, representación, ecuatorianidad, personaje, cine y estereotipo. Una vez entendido la concepción de cada concepto, la investigación da cara a las observaciones de las películas en sí. Primero en conocer el contexto en el que se desarrollan, la época, ambientación e historia y contexto para después identificar los personajes centrales que serán parte del estudio. Conocer cuáles son sus rasgos, tanto físicos, como culturales, de donde provienen, sus gustos, manera de hablar, lugares a los que frecuentan y hasta qué tipo de comida suelen consumir. Así como también identificar en su conjunto los rasgos generales, que en este caso prima la religión y migración como rasgos un tanto repetitivos. Es entonces que la investigación pasa al análisis pasa a la interpretación de las perspectivas con las que se han combinado identidad y representación en cada uno de los personajes y los tipos con los que han sido construidos a través de la visión del director. Es así que se define una lista de estereotipos y elementos con los que se caracteriza la personalidad de los personajes centrales de cada film.
