<b>Purpose &ndash;</b> This paper seeks to extend the development of the historical accounting research agenda further into the area of popular culture. The work examines the discourses that surrounded the drinking of alcohol in nineteenth century Britain and explores how an accounting failure disrupted the tension between the two established competing discourses, leading to a significant impact on UK drinking culture at the end of the nineteenth century. <br /><b><br />Design/methodology/approach &ndash; </b>The paper employs both primary and secondary sources. Secondary sources are used to develop the main themes of the discourses deployed by the temperance societies and the whisky companies. Primary sources derived from the contemporary press are employed, as necessary, in support. <br /><b><br />Findings &ndash;</b> The paper demonstrates that accounting, although it may not be central to a discourse or other social structure, can still have a profound impact upon cultural practices. The potential for research into culture and accounting should not therefore be dismissed if no immediate or concrete relationship between culture and accounting can be determined. Further support is provided for studies that seek to expand the accounting research agenda into new territories. <br /><b><br />Originality/value &ndash;</b> The study of popular culture is relatively novel in accounting research. This paper seeks to add to this research by exploring an area of cultural activity that has hitherto been neglected by researchers, i.e. by exploring how an accounting incident impacted upon the historical consumption of Scotch whisky in the UK.<br />

The growth rate of cultured mammalian cells can be influenced by chemical and physical methods such as electromagnetic fields (EMF), light, temperature and plasma. These physical methods have a number of well documented effects on mammalian cells including modification of gene expression, cell cycle, invasion, motility, cell viability, proliferation, apoptosis and mammosphere numbers. A study of the existing literature confirms that the impact of physical method on mammalian cells depends on the cell type, culture environment, exposure time, frequency, wave shape, and amount of dose. The modification of cell proliferation and apoptosis is necessary for cells products, tissue engineering, and therapy. In this article, we reviewed the impact of four physical methods on the growth rate and viability of cells. Plasma is the best method among fours because we can get desired result ranging from increasing cell proliferation to inducing apoptosis depending on the dose.

This study sought to investigate the preferences for language use and modes of learning of university students who were completing undergraduate degrees in Australia. Of the sixty students surveyed, forty percent were international students. For seventy five percent of all students sampled, either they or their parents (or both) were bi- or multilingual. Questions which this research sought to answer were: Do the preferences for learning of university students differ according to the culture and / or language backgrounds of the students? Does an individual student&rsquo;s preferred learning style influence the student&rsquo;s preferences for learning in a group situation? For students whose first language is not English, do their preferences for language use vary in group learning? General findings resulting from a statistical analysis of responses to the questionnaire indicated in many, but not all, cases that the preferences for learning of university students differed according to the cultural and / or language backgrounds of the students, that an individual student&rsquo;s preferred learning style influenced the student&rsquo;s preferences for learning in a group situation, and that the preferences for language use of students whose first language was not English varied in group learning. Reid&rsquo;s (1984 in Richards, J.C. &amp; Lockhart, C., 1994) &ldquo;Perceptual learning style preference questionnaire&rdquo; comprised one section of the questionnaire for this study. This replication made possible a comparison of the findings which related to students&rsquo; learning styles from this study with findings from similar studies in which Reid&rsquo;s survey instrument had been used. Findings of the present study indicate a number of differences from Reid&rsquo;s findings. This study found, for example, that most language groups showed a minor preference for group learning using this survey instrument whereas Reid had found that group learning was a negligible preference for most of the language groups in her study. This study may give tertiary educators a greater understanding of their students&rsquo; preferences for group and other learning styles. It may also inform them of the likely preferences for language use of those of their students who have first languages other than English. Future students may benefit from this.<br />

<b>Purpose -</b> While the body of work exploring brand orientation has grown, there has been a general failure to build on extant research and generate a holistic conceptualization of brand orientation. This paper aims to develop a model of the key drivers, impediments and manifestations of brand orientation in a museum context.<br /><br /><b>Design/methodology/approach -</b> A collective case study design was used, consisting of key informant interviews using a semi-structured interview protocol and analysis of institutional documents and observational research. Interviews took place with well-known museums across three countries: the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Australia. This paper demonstrates the richness of qualitative case studies as a method of theory building and as a precursor to further empirical research.<br /><br /><b>Findings -</b> The case study findings reveal both a philosophical and behavioral aspect of brand orientation. Thus, six attributes are presented that include brand orientation as an organizational culture and compass for decision-making and four brand behaviors (distinctiveness, functionality, augmentation and symbolism). The conceptual model also depicts the critical antecedents to brand orientation in a museum context.<br /><br /><b>Research limitations/implications - </b>This study provides a foundation for future brand research by offering a holistic conceptualization of brand orientation and identifying the primary antecedents in a museum context. Future research may wish to empirically establish a valid and reliable scale of brand orientation and examine its explanatory potential. Future research may also consider other contexts to provide further insight into the drivers and inhibitors of brand orientation.<br /><br /><b>Practical implications -</b> If organizations seek to establish a strong brand orientation they must devote resources to establishing the brand as a dominant organizational philosophy that guides decision-making. In addition, brand oriented organizations must establish the brand as a distinctive asset that communicates relevance and accessibility and invest in augmenting initiatives that enable the organization to connect with customers on a personal and emotional level.<br /><br /><b>Originality/value -</b> Using an exploratory method we are able to reconcile a number of approaches to brand orientation and provide a conceptualization that incorporates the philosophical and behavioral approaches to business orientations. Museums face substantial resource constraints, competing needs of multiple stakeholders and increasing market turbulence. If museums can achieve such significant organizational change then the sector presents an interesting exemplar for many other non-profit organizations.<br />

This study advances prior theoretical research by investigating the influence of cultural forces in our understanding of leadership. The research provides new insights by linking transformational and transactional leadership to the Malaysian cultural environment. Using a quantitative approach by administering the multifactor leadership questionnaire MLQ-5x-short, 138 usable responses were analysed. Findings indicate that cultural foundations contribute significantly to transformational leadership behaviours to facilitate the creation of a harmonious leader&ndash;subordinate relationship. Furthermore, this study contributes to an understanding of how specific leaders' behaviours are affected by cultural forces, and reveals leadership attributes that are contingent upon dynamic environmental conditions. The study extends beyond the obvious, and reveals subtle yet important culture-specific differences. The Malaysian managers, regardless of gender, show a preference for leading within the transformational leadership framework. This has led us to infer that cultural forces do indeed play an important role in determining leadership styles.<br />

<b>Objective&ensp; </b>To develop an in-depth picture of both lived experience of obesity and the impact of socio-cultural factors on people living with obesity.<br /><br /><b>Design&ensp; </b>Qualitative methodology, utilizing in-depth semi-structured interviews with a community sample of obese adults (body mass index &ge;30). Community sampling methods were supplemented with purposive sampling techniques to ensure a diverse range of individuals were included.<br /><br /><b>Results&ensp; </b>Seventy-six individuals (aged 16&ndash;72) were interviewed. Most had struggled with their weight for most of their lives (n = 45). Almost all had experienced stigma and discrimination in childhood (n = 36), as adolescents (n = 41) or as adults (n = 72). About half stated that they had been humiliated by health professionals because of their weight. Participants felt an individual responsibility to lose weight, and many tried extreme forms of dieting to do so. Participants described an increasing culture of &lsquo;blame&rsquo; against people living with obesity perpetuated by media and public health messages. Eighty percent said that they hated or disliked the word obesity and would rather be called fat or overweight.<br /><br /><b>Discussion and Conclusion</b>&ensp; There are four key conclusions: (i) the experiences of obesity are diverse, but there are common themes, (ii) people living with obesity have heard the messages but find it difficult to act upon them, (iii) interventions should be tailored to address both individual and community needs and (iv) we need to rethink how to approach obesity interventions to ensure that avoid recapitulating damaging social stereotypes and exacerbating social inequalities.

This paper examines how culture and identity can be relatively defined through hybrid perspectives in relation to migration experiences. Addressing and portraying definitions of culture and identity is crucial in understanding how notions of such issues connect and initiate the migrant subject through new experiences, perspectives and ways of being. In enunciating the transitions from home to a new place, and elaborating on the rupture of an inherited culture and grounded identity, I refer to them through self-reflexive perspectives. The search for meaning through appraisals of cultural lineage and linguistic capital through a Diaspora, a post colonial history and lived life experiences from my home country, pre-empts the ambivalent and hybrid status in defining culture(s) and identit(ies). It is crucial to recognise how challenges for adaptation to new culture, language, societal norms, and differences in class, nationality, race and gender play specific roles in the migrant experience. My current experiences of migration to Australia are narrations of encountered difficulties, fears, inhibitions, new aspirations, perceptions and perspectives, which map an &lsquo;identity crisis.&rsquo; From this narrative structure, I investigate through my ongoing PhD study, how my artistic expression and representations progress towards experiences, and themes that metaphorically reflect, inspire and enact the hybrid structures of culture(s) and identit(ies). Explored reflexively my representations suggest how the &lsquo;liminal space&rsquo; or the &lsquo;third space,&rsquo; (Bhabha, 1990) express transitions about the &lsquo;self&rsquo; and my artistic expression, which enable further reflection and positions to emerge and extend to metaphorical expressions.

This study investigated population genetic structure and diversity of mud carp <i>Cirrhinus molitorella</i>, a species widely used in aquaculture and culture-based fisheries in China and Mekong River riparian countries. Seven newly developed and one published microsatellite DNA markers were used to analyse samples from six wild locations, four hatchery broodstocks and one farmed site from the Mekong, Red and Pearl Rivers. Significant genetic structure was detected in <i>C. molitorella</i>, with isolation-by-distance being a strong force in the Mekong. Pair-wise <i>F</i><sub>ST</sub>, Fisher's exact tests for population differentiation, permutation tests and individual-based structure analysis all support the recognition of a sample originating from Toul Krasaing Lake (Cambodia) and one between Kratie and Stung Treng (Cambodia) as distinct from the remainder of the sampled range. Samples from the main upper Mekong and the Nam Khan River were significantly differentiated, but on a time scale inferred to be short (<i>i.e.</i> by genetic drift, not sufficient for evolution of new microsatellite alleles). The Mekong stock of <i>C. molitorella</i> was strongly differentiated from those from the Red and Pearl Rivers, inferred to be on an evolutionary time scale. Finer-scale sampling is warranted to further improve the understanding of genetic interactions among fish from the Mekong and its tributaries. Detailed studies on the ecology of <i>C. molitorella</i> (e.g. migration pathways and preferred spawning habitats) would provide useful information to explain the patterns of genetic structure detected here, and deepen insights about evolutionary distinctiveness of the population units.<br />

In 2006, Paul D. Numrich (2008) posed the question of whether contemporary scholarship on North American Buddhism constituted a distinct &quot;field of study&quot; and identified several factors that defined both academic disciplines and fields. This paper applies Numrich's criteria to the study of Buddhism in Australia, in its multiple and diverse forms, suggesting that it is an emerging field of study. While there has been an increase in historical, anthropological, and sociological scholarship in recent years, a comprehensive analysis of Buddhism in Australia, and particularly its impact on Australian life and culture, is yet to be conducted. This paper argues that such a study is both timely and necessary, given that Buddhism is the second largest religion in Australia, and we appear to be entering an &quot;Asian century.&quot;

Researchers report that successful cultural change in an organization is difficult to achieve. This research contends that it is more likely to be successful when a systemic approach to strategic human resource management (SHRM) is used to facilitate the change. The contention was tested in an action research case study and longitudinal assessment of change in a large Australian public sector agency. A clear finding from this research is that the cultural change had been sustained through the systemic application of SHRM.<br />

<b>Background</b><br />This project is part of the Translating Research in Elder Care (TREC) program of research, a multi-level and longitudinal research program being conducted in 36 nursing homes in three Canadian Prairie Provinces. The overall goal of TREC is to improve the quality of care for older persons living in nursing homes and the quality of work life for care providers. The purpose of this paper is to report on development and evaluation of facility annual reports (FARs) from facility administrators&rsquo; perspectives on the usefulness, meaningfulness, and understandability of selected data from the TREC survey. <br /><b>Methods</b><br />A cross sectional survey design was used in this study. The feedback reports were developed in collaboration with participating facility administrators. FARs presented results in four contextual areas: workplace culture, feedback processes, job satisfaction, and staff burnout. Six weeks after FARs were mailed to each administrator, we conducted structured telephone interviews with administrators to elicit their evaluation of the FARs. Administrators were also asked if they had taken any actions as a result of the FAR. Descriptive and inferential statistics, as well as content analysis for open-ended questions, were used to summarize findings. <br /><b>Results</b><br />Thirty-one facility administrators (representing thirty-two facilities) participated in the interviews. Six administrators had taken action and 18 were planning on taking action as a result of FARs. The majority found the four contextual areas addressed in FAR to be useful, meaningful, and understandable. They liked the comparisons made between data from years one and two and between their facility and other TREC study sites in their province. Twenty-two indicated that they would like to receive information on additional areas such as aggressive behaviours of residents and information sharing. Twenty-four administrators indicated that FARs contained enough information, while eight found FARs &lsquo;too short&rsquo;. Administrators who reported that the FAR contained enough information were more likely to take action within their facilities than administrators who reported that they needed more information. <br /><b>Conclusions</b><br />Although the FAR was brief, the presentation of the four contextual areas was relevant to the majority of administrators and prompted them to plan or to take action within their facility. <br />

Confucian values form the core of the Chinese culture, penetrating all levels of social life, and also set the standards for family, community and political behavior. The teaching of values is deemed to be an important aspect of young children&rsquo;s education and usually the responsibility for this is seen to rest with the family. Much interest has been generated recently on the teaching of core values in early childhood curriculum in order to encourage tolerance, acceptance, trust, openness, and honesty in children. Research on Confucianism is popularly conducted in different cultural contexts all over the world. Furthermore research has shown that Confucianism continues to exert a major influence on the everyday lives of Asian communities. Given the interest in Confucian values, this research study was designed to examine the expressed views of three cohorts of professionals in Hong Kong about the preservation of such values and their application to early childhood teaching. This study confirmed the view that there is a need to preserve cultural values to enable the child to be accepted in the society, especially with the value of &lsquo;Ren&rsquo; helping one to learn how to interact with others and with the value of &lsquo;Li&rsquo; further defining the appropriate behaviour in this interaction.

Promoting safety management is always the top priority in construction business. Fostering safety culture will be one of the most effective ways. This paper is a case study, based upon the &ldquo;Geller&rsquo;s 10 principles for achieving a total safety culture&rdquo;, to review how a construction companyin Hong Kong effectively promoting safety culture and enjoying pleasant safety records. Zero harmis not a &ldquo;zero sum game&rdquo;, but it requires positive &ldquo;top down&rdquo; and &ldquo;bottom up&rdquo; actions from both employers and employees.

Australia is proud of its rich and varied array of the Arts depicting a range of cultural diversity formed by ongoing migration. Although the complex issues of dance, culture and identity are interconnected, forming a multicultural society in Australia, dance education is a powerful platform to transmit and promote togetherness where understanding and respect is shared in dance practice. The focus of this article is on dance education as part of multicultural arts education within teacher education courses at Deakin University (Melbourne) Australia. It forms part of my ongoing wider study that started in 2010 regarding Attitudes and perceptions of Arts Education Students: Preparing culturally responsive teachers across two continents (Australia and South Africa). In 2011, I interviewed the dance educator and will report on two themes from her interview data: multicultural dance and the inclusion of African dance within multicultural dance practice. I argue that the inclusion of innovative and immersive practice of dance where authentic teaching and learning can be facilitated is a powerful platform to share multicultural dance practice in tertiary education.

Foot lesions are common in the dialysis population and contribute to increased morbidity and mortality (Broersma 2004). lmportantly, patients on dialysis with and without diabetes are at increased risk of foot ulcers (Jones et al. 2012) and lower limb amputation (Kaminski, Frescos &amp; Tucker 2012). Simple foot screening in dialysis centres can identify those at risk of foot complications and the presence of foot ulcers (Ahmad 2009; Ng et al. 2003). Valid and reliable foot screening tools have been developed in the dialysis context to identify those at risk and those with actual ulcers (Murphy et al. 2012).ln 2011, following the completion of a Diabetes and Renal Pilot Study and staff education, Moorabbin Haemodialysis Unit and Southern Health, identified the need to formalise foot screening for all patients and increase the rate at which these were conducted. The aim of this report is to present a summary of the audit evaluation of foot health screens and referrals in our dialysis centre.
