Titanium nitride (TiN), which is widely used for hard coatings, reportedly undergoes a pressure-induced structural phase transformation, from a NaCl to a CsCl structure, at similar to 7 GPa. In this paper, we use first-principles calculations based on density functional theory with a generalized gradient approximation of the exchange correlation energy to determine the structural stability of this transformation. Our results show that the stress required for this structural transformation is substantially lower (by more than an order of magnitude) when it is deviatoric in nature vis-a-vis that under hydrostatic pressure. Local stability of the structure is assessed with phonon dispersion determined at different pressures, and we find that CsCl structure of TiN is expected to distort after the transformation. From the electronic structure calculations, we estimate the electrical conductivity of TiN in the CsCl structure to be about 5 times of that in NaCl structure, which should be observable experimentally. This paper reports an experimental investigation of oscillating temperature field beneath a single isolated nucleation site using a non-invasive TLC (thermochromic liquid crystal) based thermography technique. Empirical correlations are presented to demonstrate the influence of system pressure and wall heat flux on different ebullition characteristics in the nucleate pool boiling regime of refrigerant R-134a. TLC transient response and two-phase flow structure are captured using synchronized, high resolution imaging. It is observed that the area of influence of nucleation site exhibits a two-part distinct transient behavior during the bubble growth period and broadens to a maximum of 1.57 times the bubble diameter at the instant of bubble departure. This is accompanied by a sharp fall of 2.5 degrees C in the local excess temperature at the nucleation site, which results in momentary augmentation (similar to 40%) in the local heat transfer coefficient at the nucleation origin. The enhanced heat transfer rate observed during the bubble peel-off event is primarily due to transient micro-convection in the wake of the retreating bubble. Further, the results indicate that a slight increase in system pressure from 813.6 to 882.5 kPa has no considerable effect on either the wall superheat or the overall heat transfer coefficient and ebullition frequency. In addition, correlations have been obtained for bubble Reynolds number, Jackob number and the dimensionless bubble generation frequency in terms of modified boiling number.

For the first time, high quality tin oxide (SnO2) nanowires have been synthesized at a low substrate temperature of 450 degrees C via vapor-liquid-solid mechanism using an electron beam evaporation technique. The grown nanowires have shown length of 2-4 mu m and diameter of 20-60 nm. High resolution transmission electron microscope studies on the grown nanowires have shown the single crystalline nature of the SnO2 nanowires. We investigated the effect of growth temperature and oxygen partial pressure on SnO2 nanowires growth. Variation of substrate temperature at a constant oxygen partial pressure of 4 x 10(-4) mbar suggested that a temperature equal to or greater than 450 degrees C was the best condition for phase pure SnO2 nanowires growth. The SnO2 nanowires grown on a SiO2 substrate were subjected to UV photo detection. The responsivity and quantum efficiency of SnO2 NWs photo detector (at 10V applied bias) was 12 A/W and 45, respectively, for 12 mu W/cm(2) UV lamp (330 nm) intensity on the photo detector.

A detailed study on the postliquefaction undrained shear behavior of sand-silt mixtures at constant void ratios is presented in this article. The influence of different parameters such as density, amplitude of cyclic shear stress, and drainage conditions on the postliquefaction undrained response of sand-silt mixtures has been investigated, in addition to the effect of fines content. The results showed that the limiting silt content plays a vital role in the strength of the soil under both cyclic and monotonic shear loading. Both the liquefaction resistance and postliquefaction shear strength of the soils are found to decrease with an increase in the fines content until the limiting silt content is reached. However, further increase in the silt content beyond the limiting silt content increases the liquefaction resistance as well as the postliquefaction shear strength of the soils. It is also observed that these variations on the liquefaction and postliquefaction resistance of soils are closely related to the variations in relative density. We report a blood pressure evaluation methodology by recording the radial arterial pulse waveform in real time using a fiber Bragg grating pulse device (FBGPD). Here, the pressure responses of the arterial pulse in the form of beat-to-beat pulse amplitude and arterial diametrical variations are monitored. Particularly, the unique signatures of pulse pressure variations have been recorded in the arterial pulse waveform, which indicate the systolic and diastolic blood pressure while the patient is subjected to the sphygmomanometric blood pressure examination. The proposed method of blood pressure evaluation using FBGPD has been validated with the auscultatory method of detecting the acoustic pulses (Korotkoff sounds) by an electronic stethoscope. Using Genetic Algorithm, a global optimization method inspired by nature's evolutionary process, we have improved the quantitative refocused constant-time INEPT experiment (Q-INEPT-CT) of Makela et al. (JMR 204 (2010) 124-130) with various optimization constraints. The improved `average polarization transfer' and `min-max difference' of new delay sets effectively reduces the experimental time by a factor of two (compared with Q-INEPT-CT, Makela et al.) without compromising on accuracy. We also discuss a quantitative spectral editing technique based on average polarization transfer. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Measurement of temperature and pressure exerted on the leeward surface of a blunt cone specimen has been demonstrated in the present work in a hypersonic wind tunnel using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. The experiments were conducted on a 30 degrees apex-angle blunt cone with 51 mm base diameter at wind flow speeds of Mach 6.5 and 8.35 in a 300 mm hypersonic wind tunnel of Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. A special pressure insensitive temperature sensor probe along with the conventional bare FBG sensors was used for explicit temperature and aerodynamic pressure measurement respectively on the leeward surface of the specimen. computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of the flow field around the blunt cone specimen has also been carried out to obtain the temperature and pressure at conditions analogous to experiments. The results obtained from FBG sensors and the CFD simulations are found to be in good agreement with each other.

In this paper, a current hysteresis controller with parabolic boundaries for a 12-sided polygonal voltage space vector inverter fed induction motor (IM) drive is proposed. Parabolic boundaries with generalized vector selection logic, valid for all sectors and rotational direction, is used in the proposed controller. The current error space phasor boundary is obtained by first studying the drive scheme with space vector based PWM (SVPWM) controller. Four parabolas are used to approximate this current error space phasor boundary. The system is then run with space phasor based hysteresis PWM controller by limiting the current error space vector (CESV) within the parabolic boundary. The proposed controller has simple controller implementation, nearly constant switching frequency, extended modulation range and fast dynamic response with smooth transition to the over modulation region.

In this paper, a current error space vector (CESV)-based hysteresis current controller for a multilevel 12-sided voltage space vector-based inverter-fed induction motor (IM) drive is proposed. The proposed controller gives a nearly constant switching frequency operation throughout different speeds in the linear modulation region. It achieves the elimination of 6n +/- 1, n = odd harmonics from the phase voltages and currents in the entire modulation range, with an increase in the linear modulation range. It also exhibits fast dynamic behavior under different transient conditions and has a simple controller implementation. Nearly constant switching frequency is obtained by matching the steady-state CESV boundaries of the proposed controller with that of a constant switching frequency SVPWM-based drive. In the proposed controller, the CESV reference boundaries are computed online, using the switching dwell time and voltage error vector of each applied vector. These quantities are calculated from estimated sampled reference phase voltages. Vector change is decided by projecting the actual current error along the computed hysteresis space vector boundary of the presently applied vector. The estimated reference phase voltages are found from the stator current error ripple and the parameters of the IM.

A transverse magnetic field was used to fix the cathode spot of a low pressure mercury arc with liquid cathode It was noticed that such fixation causes consider-abledepression of the emission zone below the mercury level. This depression varies with the arc current and the magnetic field and is associated with an increase in the arc voltage drop. It indicates appreciable pressure in the emission zone.

Phase equilibrium experiments indicate that NdRhO3 is the only ternary oxide in the system Nd-Rh-O at 1273 K; it has orthorhombically-distorted perovskite structure. By employing a solid-state electrochemical cell incorporating calcia-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte, thermodynamic properties of NdRhO3 are determined. The standard Gibbs energy of formation of NdRhO3 from its component binary oxides in the temperature ranges from 900 to 1300 K can be expressed as: 1/2Rh(2)O(3) (ortho)+1/2Nd(2)O(3)(hex)=NdRhO3(ortho), Delta(f(o,x))G(0)/J mol(-1)( +/- 197) = - 66256+5.64 (T/K). The decomposition temperature of NdRhO3 computed from extrapolated thermodynamic data is 1803 (+/- 4) K in pure oxygen and 1692 (+/- 4) K in air at standard pressure. Oxygen partial pressure-composition diagram and three-dimensional chemical potential diagram at 1273 K are developed from thermodynamic data obtained in this study and auxiliary information from the literature. Equilibrium temperature-composition phase diagrams at constant oxygen partial pressures are also constructed. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Effect of low oxygen pressure on structural and magnetic properties of quenched SrFe12O19 thin films
Resumo:
Strontium hexaferrite thin films have been grown on glass substrates at room temperature in oxygen environment by pulsed laser deposition method. The effect of oxygen pressure (p(o2)) on the structural and magnetic properties has been investigated. The as-deposited films were found to be amorphous in nature. The crystallization of these films was achieved by annealing at a temperature of 850 A degrees C in air. The thickness of the film increased with p(o2). The film grown at p(o2) = 0.455 Pa had a clear hexagonal structure. The values of coercivity for the films were found to increase with p(o2).

Complexity of mufflers generally introduces considerable pressure drop, which affects the engine performance adversely. Not much literature is available for pressure drop across perforates. In this paper, the stagnation pressure drop across perforated muffler elements has been measured experimentally and generalized expressions have been developed for the pressure loss across cross-flow expansion and cross-flow contraction elements. A flow resistance model available in the literature has been made use of to analytically determine the flow distribution and thereby the pressure drop of mufflers. A generalized expression has been derived here for evaluation of the equivalent flow resistance for parallel flow paths. Expressions for flow resistance across perforated elements, derived by means of flow experiments, have been implemented in the flow resistance network. The results have been validated with experimental data. Thus, the newly developed integrated flow resistance networks would enable us to determine the normalized stagnation pressure drop of commercial automotive mufflers, thus enabling an efficient flow-acoustic design of silencing systems.

Experiments involving heating of liquid droplets which are acoustically levitated, reveal specific modes of oscillations. For a given radiation flux, certain fluid droplets undergo distortion leading to catastrophic bag type breakup. The voltage of the acoustic levitator has been kept constant to operate at a nominal acoustic pressure intensity, throughout the experiments. Thus the droplet shape instabilities are primarily a consequence of droplet heating through vapor pressure, surface tension and viscosity. A novel approach is used by employing Legendre polynomials for the mode shape approximation to describe the thermally induced instabilities. The two dominant Legendre modes essentially reflect (a) the droplet size reduction due to evaporation, and (b) the deformation around the equilibrium shape. Dissipation and inter-coupling of modal energy lead to stable droplet shape while accumulation of the same ultimately results in droplet breakup. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
