The present study provides an extensive and detailed numerical analysis of NO chemical kinetics in low calorific value H-2/CO syngas flames utilizing predictions by five chemical kinetic mechanisms available out of which four deal with H-2/CO while the fifth mechanism (GRI 3.0) additionally accounts for hydrocarbon chemistry. Comparison of predicted axial NO profiles in premixed flat flames with measurements at 1 bar, 3.05 bar and 9.15 bar shows considerably large quantitative differences among the various mechanisms. However, at each pressure, the quantitative reaction path diagrams show similar NO formation pathways for most of the mechanisms. Interestingly, in counterflow diffusion flames, the quantitative reaction path diagrams and sensitivity analyses using the various mechanisms reveal major differences in the NO formation pathways and reaction rates of important reactions. The NNH and N2O intermediate pathways are found to be the major contributors for NO formation in all the reaction mechanisms except GRI 3.0 in syngas diffusion flames. The GRI 3.0 mechanism is observed to predict prompt NO pathway as the major contributing pathway to NO formation. This is attributed to prediction of a large concentration of CH radical by the GRI 3.0 as opposed to a relatively negligible value predicted by all other mechanisms. Also, the back-conversion of NNH into N2O at lower pressures (2-4 bar) was uniquely observed for one of the five mechanisms. The net reaction rates and peak flame temperatures are used to correlate and explain the differences observed in the peak NO] at different pressures. This study identifies key reactions needing assessment and also highlights the need for experimental data in syngas diffusion flames in order to assess and optimize H-2/CO and nitrogen chemistry. A series of scheelite-type Eu3+-activated CaMoO4 phosphors were synthesized by the nitrate-citrate gel combustion method. All the compounds crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group I4(1)/a (No. 88). FESEM results reveal the spherical-like morphology. The CaMoO4 phosphor exhibited broad emission centered at 500 nm under the excitation of 298 nm wavelength, while Eu3+-activated CaMoO4 shows an intense characteristic red emission peak at 615 nm at different excitation wavelengths, due to D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+ ions. The intensities of transitions between different J levels depend on the symmetry of the local environment of Eu3+ ions and were estimated using the Judd-Ofelt analysis. The high asymmetric ratio revealed that Eu3+ occupies sites with a low symmetry and without an inversion center. The CIE chromaticity co-ordinates (x, y) were calculated from emission spectra, and the values were close to the NTSC standard. Therefore, the present phosphor is highly useful for LEDs applications.

Gasification is an energy transformation process in which solid fuel undergoes thermochemical conversion to produce gaseous fuel, and the two most important criteria involved in such process to evaluate the performance, economics and sustainability of the technology are: the total available energy (exergy) and the energy conserved (energy efficiency). Current study focuses on the energy and exergy analysis of the oxy-steam gasification and comparing with air gasification to optimize the H-2 yield, efficiency and syngas energy density. Casuarina wood is used as a fuel, and mixture of oxygen and steam in different proportion and amount is used as a gasifying media. The results are analysed with respect to varying equivalence ratio and steam to biomass ratio (SBR). Elemental mass balance technique is employed to ensure the validity of results. First and second law thermodynamic analysis is used towards time evaluation of energy and exergy analysis. Different component of energy input and output has been studied carefully to understand the influence of varying SBR on the availability of energy and irreversibility in the system to minimize the losses with change in input parameters for optimum performance. The energy and exergy losses (irreversibility) for oxy-steam gasification system are compared with the results of air gasification, and losses are found to be lower in oxy-steam thermal conversion; which has been argued and reasoned due to the presence of N-2 in the air-gasification. The maximum exergy efficiency of 85% with energy efficiency of 82% is achieved at SBR of 0.75 on the molar basis. It has been observed that increase in SBR results in lower exergy and energy efficiency, and it is argued to be due to the high energy input in steam generation and subsequent losses in the form of physical exergy of steam in the product gas, which alone accounts for over 18% in exergy input and 8.5% in exergy of product gas at SBR of 2.7. Carbon boundary point (CBP), is identified at the SBR of 1.5, and water gas shift (WGS) reaction plays a crucial role in H-2 enrichment after carbon boundary point (CBP) is reached. Effects of SBR and CBP on the H-2/CO ratio is analysed and discussed from the perspective of energy as well as the reaction chemistry. Energy density of syngas and energy efficiency is favoured at lower SBR but higher SBR favours H-2 rich gas at the expense of efficiency. Copyright (C) 2014, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Diffusion couple experiments are conducted to study phase evolutions in the Co-rich part of the Co-Ni-Ta phase diagram. This helps to examine the available phase diagram and propose a correction on the stability of the Co2Ta phase based on the compositional measurements and X-ray analysis. The growth rate of this phase decreases with an increase in Ni content. The same is reflected on the estimated integrated interdiffusion coefficients of the components in this phase. The possible reasons for this change are discussed based on the discussions of defects, crystal structure and the driving forces for diffusion. Diffusion rate of Co in the Co2Ta phase at the Co-rich composition is higher because of more number of Co-Co bonds present compared to that of Ta-Ta bonds and the presence of Co antisites for the deviation from the stoichiometry. The decrease in the diffusion coefficients because of Ni addition indicates that Ni preferably replaces Co antisites to decrease the diffusion rate. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, space-shift keying (SSK) is considered for multihop multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) networks. In SSK, only one among n(s) = 2(m) available transmit antennas, chosen on the basis of m information bits, is activated during transmission. We consider two different systems of multihop co-operation, where each node has multiple antennas and employs SSK. In system I, a multihop diversity relaying scheme is considered. In system II, a multihop multibranch relaying scheme is considered. In both systems, we adopt decode-and-forward (DF) relaying, where each relay forwards the signal only when it correctly decodes. We analyze the end-to-end bit error rate (BER) and diversity order of both the systems with SSK. For binary SSK (n(s) = 2), our analytical BER expression is exact, and our numerical results show that the BERs evaluated through the analytical expression overlap with those obtained through Monte Carlo simulations. For nonbinary SSK (n(s) > 2), we derive an approximate BER expression, where the analytically evaluated BER results closely follow the simulated BER results. We show the comparison of the BERs of SSK and conventional phase-shift keying (PSK) and also show the instances where SSK outperforms PSK. We also present the diversity analyses for SSK in systems I and II, which predict the achievable diversity orders as a function of system parameters.

Herein, we present six new lipopolymers based on low molecular weight, branched polyethylenimine (BPEI 800 Da) which are hydrophobically modified using ferrocene terminated alkyl tails of variable lengths. The effects of degree of grafting, spacer length and the redox state of ferrocene in the lipopolymers on the self assembly properties were investigated in detail by TEM, AFM, DLS and zeta potential measurements. The assemblies displayed an oxidation induced increase in the size of the aggregates. The co-liposomes comprising the lipopolymer and a helper lipid, 1,2-dioleoyl phosphatidyl ethanolamine (DOPE), showed excellent gene (pDNA) delivery capability in a serum containing environment in two cancer cell lines (HeLa and U251 cells). Optimized formulations showed remarkably higher transfection activity than BPEI (25 kDa) and were also significantly better than a commercial transfection reagent, Lipofectamine 2000 as evidenced from both the luciferase activity and GFP expression analysis. Oxidation of ferrocene in the lipopolymers led to drastically reduced levels of gene transfection which was substantiated by reduced cellular internalization of fluorescently labelled pDNA as detected using confocal microscopy and flow cytometry. Moreover, the transfection inactive oxidized lipopolyplexes could be turned transfection active by exposure to ascorbic acid (AA) in cell culture medium during transfection. Endocytosis inhibition experiments showed that gene expression mediated by reduced formulations involved both clathrin and caveolae mediated pathways while the oxidized formulations were routed via the caveolae. Cytotoxicity assays revealed no obvious toxicity for the lipopolyplexes in the range of optimized transfection levels in both the cell lines studied. Overall, we have exploited the redox activity of ferrocene in branched PEI-based efficient polymeric gene carriers whose differential transfection activities could be harnessed for spatial or temporal cellular transfections.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis genes Rv0844c/Rv0845 encoding the NarL response regulator and NarS histidine kinase are hypothesized to constitute a two-component system involved in the regulation of nitrate metabolism. However, there is no experimental evidence to support this. In this study, we established M. tuberculosis NarL/NarS as a functional two-component system and identified His(241) and Asp(61) as conserved phosphorylation sites in NarS and NarL, respectively. Transcriptional profiling between M. tuberculosis H37Rv and Delta narL mutant strain during exponential growth in broth cultures with or without nitrate defined an similar to 30-gene NarL regulon that exhibited significant overlap with DevR-regulated genes, thereby implicating a role for the DevR response regulator in the regulation of nitrate metabolism. Notably, expression analysis of a subset of genes common to NarL and DevR regulons in M. tuberculosis Delta devR, Delta devS Delta dosT, and Delta narL mutant strains revealed that in response to nitrite produced during aerobic nitrate metabolism, the DevRS/DosT regulatory system plays a primary role that is augmented by NarL. Specifically, NarL itself was unable to bind to the narK2, acg, and Rv3130c promoters in phosphorylated or unphosphorylated form; however, its interaction with DevR similar to P resulted in cooperative binding, thereby enabling co-regulation of these genes. These findings support the role of physiologically derived nitrite as a metabolic signal in mycobacteria. We propose NarL-DevR binding, possibly as a heterodimer, as a novel mechanism for co-regulation of gene expression by the DevRS/DosT and NarL/NarS regulatory systems.

This paper studies a pilot-assisted physical layer data fusion technique known as Distributed Co-Phasing (DCP). In this two-phase scheme, the sensors first estimate the channel to the fusion center (FC) using pilots sent by the latter; and then they simultaneously transmit their common data by pre-rotating them by the estimated channel phase, thereby achieving physical layer data fusion. First, by analyzing the symmetric mutual information of the system, it is shown that the use of higher order constellations (HOC) can improve the throughput of DCP compared to the binary signaling considered heretofore. Using an HOC in the DCP setting requires the estimation of the composite DCP channel at the FC for data decoding. To this end, two blind algorithms are proposed: 1) power method, and 2) modified K-means algorithm. The latter algorithm is shown to be computationally efficient and converges significantly faster than the conventional K-means algorithm. Analytical expressions for the probability of error are derived, and it is found that even at moderate to low SNRs, the modified K-means algorithm achieves a probability of error comparable to that achievable with a perfect channel estimate at the FC, while requiring no pilot symbols to be transmitted from the sensor nodes. Also, the problem of signal corruption due to imperfect DCP is investigated, and constellation shaping to minimize the probability of signal corruption is proposed and analyzed. The analysis is validated, and the promising performance of DCP for energy-efficient physical layer data fusion is illustrated, using Monte Carlo simulations.

Transition metal atom (Co) substituted synthetic tetrahedrite compounds Cu12-xCoxSb4S13 (x = 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) were prepared by solid state synthesis. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) patterns revealed tetrahedrite as the main phase, whereas for the compounds with x = 0, 0.5 a trace of impurity phase Cu3SbS4 was observed. The surface morphology showed a large grain size with low porosity, which indicated appropriate compaction for the hot pressed samples. The phase purity, as monitored by Electron Probe Micro Analysis (EPMA) is in good agreement with the XRD data. The elemental composition for all the compounds almost matched with the nominal composition. The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) data showed that Cu existed in both +1 and +2 states, while Sb exhibited +3 oxidation states. Elastic modulus and hardness showed a systematic variation with increasing Co content. The electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient increased with increase in the doping content due to the decrease in the number of carriers caused by the substitution of Co2+ on the Cu1+ site. The positive Seebeck coefficient for all samples indicates that the dominant carriers are holes. A combined effect of resistivity and Seebeck coefficient leads to the maximum power factor of 1.76 mW m(-1) K-2 at 673 K for Cu11.5Co0.5Sb4S13. This could be due to the optimization in the carrier concentration by the partial substitution of Co2+ on both the Cu1+ as well as Cu2+ site at the same doping levels, which is also supported by the XPS data. The total thermal conductivity systematically decreased with increase of doping content as it is mainly influenced by the decrease of carrier thermal conductivity. The maximum thermoelectric figure of merit zT = 0.98 was obtained at 673 K for Cu11.5Co0.5Sb4S13. (C) 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Co3O4 catalysts were prepared by combustion synthesis using different fuels glycine (G), ODH (O) and urea (U). Morphological changes of the materials were observed by using different fuels. The prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, BET and DRIFTS analysis. All compounds showed 100% conversion of CO below 175C. The prepared catalysts exhibited very high stability and conversions did not decrease even after 50 h of continuous operation. The oxygen storage capacity (OSC) of materials was measured by H-2-TPR analysis. Co3O4-O is having high OSC among the synthesized catalysts. The activation energies of these catalysts were found to be in the range of 42.3-64.8 kJ mol(-1). With DRIFTS analysis, the surface carbonates, superoxide anions, adsorbed CO, O-2 species on the catalyst surface were found and this information was used to develop a detailed reaction pathway. A kinetic model was developed with the help of proposed mechanism and used to fit the data. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bi1-xCaxFe1-xCoxO3 nanoparticles with x=0.0, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15 were successfully synthesized by cost effective tartaric acid based sol gel route. The alkali earth metal Ca2+ ions and transition metal Co3+ ions codoping at A and B-sites of BiFeO3 results in structural distortion and phase transformation. Rietveld refinement of XRD patterns suggested the coexistence of rhombohedral and orthorhombic phases in codoped BiFeO3 samples. Both XRD and Raman scattering studies showed the compressive lattice distortion in the samples induced by codoping of Ca2+ and Co3+ ions. Two-phonon Raman spectra exhibited the improvement of magnetization in these samples. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed the dominancy of Fe3+ and Co3+ oxidation states along with the shifting of the binding energy of Bi 4f orbital which confirms the substitution Ca2+ at Bi-site. The magnetic study showed the enhancement in room temperature ferromagnetic behavior with co-substitution consistent with Rama analysis. The gradual change in line shape of electron spin resonance spectra indicated the local distortion induced by codoping. (C) 2015 Published by Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Photoluminescence and photocatalytic properties of Eu-doped ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by facile phyto route. XPS results demonstrated the existence of Eu3+ as dopant into ZnO. Morphologies of the NPs were mainly dependent on Eu3+ and Aloe vera gel. Red shift of energy band gap was due to the creation of intermediate energy states of Eu3+ and oxygen vacancies in the band gap. PL emission of ZnO:Eu3+ (1-11 mol%, 8 ml and 7 mol%, 2-12 ml) exhibit characteristic peaks of D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transitions. From the Judd-Ofelt analysis, intensities of transitions between different.' levels dependent on the symmetry of the local environment of Eu3+ ions. CIE chromaticity co-ordinates confirm reddish emission of the phosphor. Further, NPs exhibit excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B (94%) under Sunlight was attributed to crystallite size, band gap, morphology and oxygen vacancies. In addition, photocatalyst reusability studies were conducted and found that Eu-doped catalyst could be reused several times with negligible decrease in catalytic activity. The present work directs new possibilities to provide some new insights into the design of new phyto synthesized nanophosphors for display devices, photocatalysts with high activity for environmental clean-up and solar energy conversion. This paper presents a lower bound limit analysis approach for solving an axisymmetric stability problem by using the Drucker-Prager (D-P) yield cone in conjunction with finite elements and nonlinear optimization. In principal stress space, the tip of the yield cone has been smoothened by applying the hyperbolic approximation. The nonlinear optimization has been performed by employing an interior point method based on the logarithmic barrier function. A new proposal has also been given to simulate the D-P yield cone with the Mohr-Coulomb hexagonal yield pyramid. For the sake of illustration, bearing capacity factors N-c, N-q and N-gamma have been computed, as a function of phi, both for smooth and rough circular foundations. The results obtained from the analysis compare quite well with the solutions reported from literature.

A mathematical model is developed to simulate the co-transport of viruses and colloids in unsaturated porous media under steady-state flow conditions. The virus attachment to the mobile and immobile colloids is described using a linear reversible kinetic model. Colloid transport is assumed to be decoupled from virus transport; that is, we assume that colloids are not affected by the presence of attached viruses on their surface. The governing equations, are solved numerically using an alternating three-step operator splitting approach. The model is verified by fitting three sets of experimental data published in the literature: (1) Syngouna and Chrysikopoulos (2013) and (2) Walshe et al. (2010), both on the co-transport of viruses and clay colloids under saturated conditions, and (3) Syngouna and Cluysikopoulos (2015) for the co-transport of viruses and clay colloids under unsaturated conditions. We found a good agreement between observed and fitted breakthrough curves (BTCs) under both saturated and unsaturated conditions. Then, the developed model was used to simulate the co-transport of viruses and colloids in porous media under unsaturated conditions, with the aim of understanding the relative importance of various processes on the co-transport of viruses and colloids in unsaturated porous media. The virus retention in porous media in the presence of colloids is greater during unsaturated conditions as compared to the saturated conditions due to: (1) virus attachment to the air-water interface (AWI), and (2) co-deposition of colloids with attached viruses on its surface to the AWL A sensitivity analysis of the model to various parameters showed that the virus attachment to AWI is the most sensitive parameter affecting the BTCs of both free viruses and total mobile viruses and has a significant effect on all parts of the BTC. The free and the total mobile viruses BTCs are mainly influenced by parameters describing virus attachment to the AIM, virus interaction with mobile and immobile colloids, virus attachment to solid-water interface (SWI), and colloid interaction with SWI and AWL The virus BTC is relatively insensitive to parameters describing the maximum adsorption capacity of the AWI for colloids, inlet colloid concentration, virus detachment rate coefficient from the SW!, maximum adsorption capacity of the AWI for viruses and inlet virus concentration. Undoped and Cr (3% and 5%) doped CdS nanoparticles were synthesized by chemical co-precipitation method. The synthesized nanocrystalline particles are characterized by energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL), Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Raman spectroscopy. XRD studies indicate that Cr doping in host CdS result a structural change from Cubic phase to mixed (cubic + hexagonal) phase. Due to quantum confinement effect, widening of the band gap is observed for undoped and Cr doped CdS nanoparticles compared to bulk CdS. The average particle size calculated from band gap values is in good agreement with the TEM study calculation and it is around 4-5 nm. A strong violet emission band consisting of two emission peaks is observed for undoped CdS nanoparticles, whereas for CdS:Cr nanoparticles, a broad emission band ranging from 420 nm to 730 nm with a maximum at similar to 587 nm is observed. The broad emission band is due to the overlapped emissions from variety of defects. EPR spectra of CdS:Cr samples reveal resonance signal at g = 2.143 corresponding to interacting Cr3+ ions. VSM studies indicate that the diamagnetic CdS nanoparticles are transform to ferromagnetic for 3% Cr3+ doping and the ferromagnetic nature is diminished with increasing the doping concentration to 5%.
