Mathematical modelling has become an essential tool in the design of modern catalytic systems. Emissions legislation is becoming increasingly stringent, and so mathematical models of aftertreatment systems must become more accurate in order to provide confidence that a catalyst will convert pollutants over the required range of conditions.
Automotive catalytic converter models contain several sub-models that represent processes such as mass and heat transfer, and the rates at which the reactions proceed on the surface of the precious metal. Of these sub-models, the prediction of the surface reaction rates is by far the most challenging due to the complexity of the reaction system and the large number of gas species involved. The reaction rate sub-model uses global reaction kinetics to describe the surface reaction rate of the gas species and is based on the Langmuir Hinshelwood equation further developed by Voltz et al. [1] The reactions can be modelled using the pre-exponential and activation energies of the Arrhenius equations and the inhibition terms.
The reaction kinetic parameters of aftertreatment models are found from experimental data, where a measured light-off curve is compared against a predicted curve produced by a mathematical model. The kinetic parameters are usually manually tuned to minimize the error between the measured and predicted data. This process is most commonly long, laborious and prone to misinterpretation due to the large number of parameters and the risk of multiple sets of parameters giving acceptable fits. Moreover, the number of coefficients increases greatly with the number of reactions. Therefore, with the growing number of reactions, the task of manually tuning the coefficients is becoming increasingly challenging.
In the presented work, the authors have developed and implemented a multi-objective genetic algorithm to automatically optimize reaction parameters in AxiSuite®, [2] a commercial aftertreatment model. The genetic algorithm was developed and expanded from the code presented by Michalewicz et al. [3] and was linked to AxiSuite using the Simulink add-on for Matlab.
The default kinetic values stored within the AxiSuite model were used to generate a series of light-off curves under rich conditions for a number of gas species, including CO, NO, C3H8 and C3H6. These light-off curves were used to generate an objective function.
This objective function was used to generate a measure of fit for the kinetic parameters. The multi-objective genetic algorithm was subsequently used to search between specified limits to attempt to match the objective function. In total the pre-exponential factors and activation energies of ten reactions were simultaneously optimized.
The results reported here demonstrate that, given accurate experimental data, the optimization algorithm is successful and robust in defining the correct kinetic parameters of a global kinetic model describing aftertreatment processes.

Despite adherence to strict standards of care in preparation for intravitreal injections, endophthalmitis can still occur. This article focuses on endophthalmitis and the importance of povidone-iodine in pre-procedure antisepsis. An overview of endophthalmitis and an examination of the benefits of povidone-iodine in ocular aseptic technique for the prevention of post-procedure endophthalmitis are provided. The misconceptions that patients and health practitioners may have in relation to povidone-iodine hypersensitivity are also explored.

Compared to half-bridge based MMCs, full-bridge based systems have the advantage of blocking dc fault, but at the expense of increased power semiconductors and power losses. In view of the relationships among ac/dc voltages and currents in full-bridge based MMC with the negative voltage state, this paper provides a detailed analysis on the link between capacitor voltage variation and the maximum modulation index. A hybrid MMC, consisting of mixed half-bridge and full-bridge circuits to combine their respective advantages is investigated in terms of its pre-charging process and transient dc fault ride-through capability. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed strategy for a full-bridge based MMC and the hybrid MMC.

We as language instructors are tasked with preparing students to transition from language to literature courses. The shorter length of many poems makes them ideal for presentation in the language classroom, where the acquisition of communicative competence is the priority. Introductory and intermediate textbooks’ poetry offerings, however, are frequently drawn from a canon of poems by only a few nineteenth- and twentieth-century authors (Verlaine, Apollinaire, Prévert) and fail to expose students to broader aspects of French literature. This article offers strategies for presenting pre-nineteenth-century poetry to first- and second-year students of French using dizains from Scève’s Délie as examples.

Aims: Pre-pregnancy care reduces the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with diabetes, yet the majority of women receive suboptimal care due to poor preconception counselling rates and a lack of awareness about the importance of specialised pre-pregnancy care. The primary aim was to develop a continuing professional development (CPD) resource for healthcare professionals (HCPs) who work with women with diabetes to facilitate preconception counselling with this group.

Methods: The website was developed under the direction of a multidisciplinary team, adhering to NICE guidelines. The tone, key messages and format are informed by the “Women with Diabetes” preconception counselling website, www.womenwithdiabetes.net, an existing resource which is effective in helping women to be better prepared for pregnancy. Results: This e-learning resource will give HCPs the necessary knowledge and tools to prepare women with diabetes to plan for pregnancy. The website features women with diabetes sharing their views and experiences, alongside an evidence-based commentary and key messages from research papers and clinical guidelines. It comprises two modules: “Planning for Pregnancy”, focusing on contraception, risks and planning; and “Diabetes and Pregnancy”, focusing on support during pregnancy with an overview of each trimester of pregnancy.

Conclusion: This website will be a useful CPD resource for all HCPs working with women with diabetes, providing a certificate on completion. This resource will empower HCPs to engage in preconception counselling with women with diabetes by providing the HCP with a greater understanding of the specific needs of women with diabetes both preconception and during pregnancy.

As pre-registration nurse education programmes evolve within the United Kingdom, it is imperative to involve patient/client groups within the research process, as the outcome may invoke a change in the care delivery of the registered nurse (RN). This paper focuses upon children and how children might hypothetically contribute to informing a generic nursing programme in their capacity as a rights holder and expert in their own lives. Even though their contribution and value has been debated around their capacity as research advisor, research participant and co researcher, this paper explores how the child's view of their experience of hospital and of the good nurse could be best captured. Research is a powerful vehicle that can enable their voice to equally inform UK nurse educators and policy makers so that the child's health care needs are effectively met in hospital by RN's who complete a generic programme.
