-- With this Ph.D. thesis we investigate the relationship between transport infrastructures and territory development inside the so called "in-between spaces". The idea of "in-between space", relatively novel in geography, is the formal outcome of a double approach: the one of the infrastructures, saying that these spaces can be described as areas of constrained transit between urban centres of superior hierarchical level (on a horizontal scale), and the one of the borders, stating that in-between spaces are areas of cooperation between various political-institutional levels. The above mentioned research issues are deepened both at theoretical and empirical level, being the latter based on field studies of the cross-boundary Western-Lombard area (between the Swiss canton of Ticino and the Italian region of Lombardy). This research pursues the goal of defending the argument that a multi-level polycentric spatial scenario can be a possible solution fora sustainable development of the above described in- between areas. From a "macro" perspective, what we submit here is an analysis on the expected changes in spatial accessibility and on the potential territorial development for the built-up areas influenced by the construction of the new train tunnel of the Monte Ceneri (TBC) and of the new railway line Lugano/Como-Mendrisio-Varese-Malpensa (FMV). At a "meso" level we analyse the effects exerted by the new FMV line taking into account the potential densification of the areas surrounding the railway stations. Finally, at a "micro" level, we analyse the mobility behaviours in the town of Mendrisio and we propose some possible improvements to the local public transport system, with the scope to promote a polycentric development of this municipality. Moreover, we developed and tested an analytic system able to define the existing links between the various explaining factors characterizing the relationship between new transport infrastructures and effects on mobility. -- With this Ph.D. thesis we investigate the relationship between transport infrastructures and territory development inside the so called "in-between spaces". Despite the difficulty of examining isolated cantos in Orlando Furioso and thus separating the text from the overall narrative structure, there are features present in Canto X which would encourage just such an approach. In addition to the borrowings from the Latin tradition to be found in the episode of Olimpia and the allegorical machine at work in the story of Ruggiero and Alcina, the canto evinces a consonance with the courtier spirit which was particularly active in the courts of Northern Italy and which went beyond a mere attention to heraldry and emblems. There is indeed a continuity with the figurative arts flourishing in Ferrara at the time, which saw Mantegna's antiquarian and sculpturesque works triumphed over by Titian's mythological paintings. So too with Ariosto, who after his initial "classicist" phase came to be inspired by Titian's work in a move that openly affirmed the originality and strength of his poetry.

This volume deals with the forms of propaganda and self-representation, through words and images, during the rise of the 'civiltà delle corti' and through processes typical of the time, such as confrontation, adaptation, competition and rivalry. This period, which marked the passage of Italian and European culture from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, is fundamental in the development of Modern Europe, and it lasted up to the XVIII century and beyond. At the heart of many matters debated here lies the relationship between culture and politics. The formation of a 'Lombard identity', central to the Sinergia project which was the frame of the whole research and its conferences, is closely linked to this broad general context. It places the so called 'questione milanese' - above the traditional hierarchies 'Toscana oriented' - at the centre of many questions regarding Northern Italy as a whole, starting from the dissolution of the Medieval communes, through to the rise of the signorie, from the end of the XIII century and the beginning of the XIV century up to the early XVI century.

Tutkimus tarkastelee käännösstrategioita, joita on hyödynnetty kulttuurisidonnaisten viittausten käännöksessä televisiodubbauksessa englannin kielestä italiaan. Tutkimusmateriaaliksi on valittu tv-sarjan Gilmore Girls (2000–2007) kolmannelta tuotantokaudelta poimittuja kulttuurisidonnaisia viittauksia.

Despite the increasing number of research on translating for children, no study has so far taken into consideration the translations of children’s literature from Finnish into Italian. This dissertation sets out to fill this gap with a comparative study of Finnish picturebooks and their translations into Italian. Besides being the first research in the field analysing the shifts between these two systems, the study thoroughly investigates the characteristics of the translation process of picturebooks. The works chosen as case study are the Finnish picturebooks by Mauri Kunnas and their Italian translations from the period 1979-2009 because they are characterized by a high number of linguistic and cultural complexities which challenge translators’ skills and knowledge. The dissertation establishes whether and how culture-specific elements (anthroponyms, toponyms, food and allusions) and the word-image interaction have a significant impact on the quality and the nature of the target works, and also whether these aspects are still consistent after the translation and the adaptation process to the target system. Since picturebooks are multimodal texts whose message is produced by both the verbal and the visual, it has been necessary to use a multimodal comparative analysis. Such a descriptive comparative study has allowed me to describe the textual and cultural manipulations undergone by Kunnas’s picturebooks translated into Italian. Indeed, it has helped to identify what kind of shifts occur when cultural specific elements are transferred from the source system to the target one, to determine the most frequent translation strategies used to ensure a higher degree of readability, and to establish whether particular translation choices have contributed to modify the word-image interaction. The results of the multimodal comparative analysis have shown that Italian translators have been deeply influenced by the preponderance of the illustrations and for this reason they have often verbalised the visual and added information not originally contained in the source written text. Moreover, the findings of the analysis together with the interviews to the Italian translator and publishing house have also demonstrated that the latter aimed at producing works “good for the child” – and at the same time “good for the adult” – and at minimizing Finnish cultural specificity, even to the detriment of the aesthetic nature of the original picturebooks.

Organic farming is perceived to be an environmental friendly method of food production, thus assumed to be an alternative means of minimizing food-based environmental footprints. However, lower yield and unproductive years in organic crop rotation raise questions of whether it is really an environmentally friendly farming practice. Thus, the aim of this thesis was to examine the carbon footprint and energy demands of organic carrots cultivated and sold in South-Savo, Finland and compare them with those of local and imported conventional carrots using lifecycle assessment (LCA) as a method. From the investigation, it was found that organic carrots produced in South-Savo have the lowest GHG emissions and energy demand. The GHG emissions of local organic, local conventional and imported conventional carrots were found to be 4g CO2 eq. kgcarrots-1, 142g CO2 eq. kgcarrots-1 and 280 g CO2 eq. kgcarrots-1, respectively. On the other hand, energy demand for those carrots was found to be 1,33 MJ, 1,88 MJ and 3,68 MJ kgcarrots-1. Furthermore, it was also found that local organic carrots would have approximately similar GHG emissions as conventional counterpart if soil carbon stock change was excluded from the study.
