A remoção da vegetação para dar lugar a edificações e superfícies pavimentadas implica na anulação de diversos serviços ambientais. Entre eles está o sombreamento, que impede a aquecimento do ar derivado da re-emissão da radiação solar pelas superfícies. O ar quente e seco contribui para o aumento da sensação de desconforto e favorece a incidência de doenças respiratórias. O objetivo deste trabalho foi analisar valores de temperatura e umidade do ar, comparando-se dados coletados por estações meteorológicas automáticas instaladas em regiões arborizadas e áridas da cidade, durante a ocorrência de episódios representativos do clima da região. Os procedimentos metodológicos, baseados na Climatologia Dinâmica, consistiram em relacionar a sucessão de tipos de tempo meteorológico de escala regional às diferenças observadas entre os pontos de estudo, provocadas por fenômenos provenientes das atividades humanas. Isto permitiu a clara identificação de variações climáticas críticas para o conforto e a saúde humanos, tais como grandes amplitudes térmicas e baixos valores de umidade do ar. Os resultados mostraram amplitudes térmicas menores nas áreas arborizadas (em média 3ºC) e, em alguns casos, umidade do ar mais elevada em comparação aos valores observados nas partes áridas estudadas. Estas verificações reforçam a afirmação da necessidade de ampliação das áreas verdes de São Carlos, que contribuem na atenuação as condições climáticas de desconforto e insalubridade. Em conseqüência, aumentam a qualidade de vida da população e as condições de sustentabilidade do ambiente urbano. Tal afirmação vem ao encontro da legislação ambiental brasileira e dos anseios da população são-carlense. Espera-se que as constatações deste trabalho sejam um elemento adicional na adoção de políticas públicas mais comprometidas com a saúde humana e ambiental.

The article analyses the evolution of the representation of the automobile inserted in the natural and urban environment in the Contemporary Art, from the appearance of the first cars in the beginning of the 20th century until the present day. The text compares the diverse attitudes and analysis of some representative artists who have used the image of the machine in general and the car in particular in their aesthetic discourse, using as a conductive thread the metaphor of the life cycle (birth, growth, feeding, reproduction and death). It deals with the discovery, the development and the coexistence between human and the automobile and its interpretation as a basic element of the artistic work. The text connects the image of the automobile located in the contemporary industrial landscape utilizing the artist references who have integrated the car in their work inside the natural or artificial environment characteristic of each moment. At the same time, the article goes deeply into the relationship of romantic ruin and natural landscape and the evolution of the industrial and architectural modern environment, through the work of the artists who has used the car as an inhabitant of the landscape.

Questo lavoro di tesi esplora i possibili sviluppi di un'architettura urbana sensibile alle questioni di genere, sotto un prisma femminista intersezionale. Dalla fine degli anni '90, le sperimentazioni in questa direzione hanno cominciato a farsi sempre più numerose, a cominciare dall'esempio pionieristico di Vienna, divenuta città di riferimento per eccellenza. Questa tesi è particolarmente interessata ai progetti sperimentali di Parigi, pur mantenendo una visione comparativa con progetti in altre città europee. In quanto approcci che influenzano l'architettura urbana, vengono esplorati anche le politiche pubbliche e l'attivismo, a livello francese e italiano. Il loro contributo evidenzia il potenziale di reinvenzione simbolica e materiale dell'architettura urbana, passando dal sistema eteropatriarcale verso una maggiore inclusione e giustizia spaziale. Gli interrogativi principali di questo lavoro si basano sull'influenza delle teorie femministe nella pratica professionale di architette·i e urbaniste·i, sul loro ruolo nella trasformazione degli approcci alla città e alla pianificazione urbana, nonché nella trasformazione dell'estetica architettonica e urbana. Attraverso un approccio metodologico situato, riflessivo e interdisciplinare, derivante dalle discipline dell'architettura e dell'urbanistica, il fieldwork svolto ha avuto l'obiettivo di ricercare tendenze, evoluzioni e costanti nei progetti di architettura urbana di genere. Tenendo conto dell'evoluzione temporale delle mentalità sul genere e della consapevolezza sempre più profonda delle questioni femministe, questa tesi assume un approccio critico al Gender Mainstreaming. In aggiunta al pdf della tesi è presente un documento riassuntivo in lingua italiana.

This article explores the deployment of sound in architectural-curatorial and community engagement contexts through the work of PLACE, a multidisciplinary not-for-profit architecture center in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The author, who worked with PLACE and contributed to the projects discussed here, contextualizes architecture centers and their relationship with sound before examining the specific case of sound and sound art in Northern Ireland and case studies of projects delivered by PLACE. Specifically, the article evaluates two sound installation artworks and three community engagement projects for young audiences. As a means of curating urbanism and architecture, sound-art-as-public-art affords useful strategies to examine, describe or critique the environment as alternatives to traditional architecture exhibition formats. Sound’s temporality and materiality allow sound art works to exist as temporary sculptural interventions in the urban sphere, with attendant implications for public art procurement and urban acoustics. Rich territories of engagement are opened when using sound in a community participatory context.

Urbanization related alterations to the surface energy balance impact urban warming (‘heat islands’), the growth of the boundary layer, and many other biophysical processes. Traditionally, in situ heat flux measures have been used to quantify such processes, but these typically represent only a small local-scale area within the heterogeneous urban environment. For this reason, remote sensing approaches are very attractive for elucidating more spatially representative information. Here we use hyperspectral imagery from a new airborne sensor, the Operative Modular Imaging Spectrometer (OMIS), along with a survey map and meteorological data, to derive the land cover information and surface parameters required to map spatial variations in turbulent sensible heat flux (QH). The results from two spatially-explicit flux retrieval methods which use contrasting approaches and, to a large degree, different input data are compared for a central urban area of Shanghai, China: (1) the Local-scale Urban Meteorological Parameterization Scheme (LUMPS) and (2) an Aerodynamic Resistance Method (ARM). Sensible heat fluxes are determined at the full 6 m spatial resolution of the OMIS sensor, and at lower resolutions via pixel aggregation and spatial averaging. At the 6 m spatial resolution, the sensible heat flux of rooftop dominated pixels exceeds that of roads, water and vegetated areas, with values peaking at ∼ 350 W m− 2, whilst the storage heat flux is greatest for road dominated pixels (peaking at around 420 W m− 2). We investigate the use of both OMIS-derived land surface temperatures made using a Temperature–Emissivity Separation (TES) approach, and land surface temperatures estimated from air temperature measures. Sensible heat flux differences from the two approaches over the entire 2 × 2 km study area are less than 30 W m− 2, suggesting that methods employing either strategy maybe practica1 when operated using low spatial resolution (e.g. 1 km) data. Due to the differing methodologies, direct comparisons between results obtained with the LUMPS and ARM methods are most sensibly made at reduced spatial scales. At 30 m spatial resolution, both approaches produce similar results, with the smallest difference being less than 15 W m− 2 in mean QH averaged over the entire study area. This is encouraging given the differing architecture and data requirements of the LUMPS and ARM methods. Furthermore, in terms of mean study QH, the results obtained by averaging the original 6 m spatial resolution LUMPS-derived QH values to 30 and 90 m spatial resolution are within ∼ 5 W m− 2 of those derived from averaging the original surface parameter maps prior to input into LUMPS, suggesting that that use of much lower spatial resolution spaceborne imagery data, for example from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) is likely to be a practical solution for heat flux determination in urban areas.

We intended to establish how efficient the leaf antioxidant responses of C. echinata are against oxidative environmental conditions observed in an urban environment and their relations to growth and biomass parameters. Plants were grown for 15 months in four sites: Congonhas and Pinheiros, affected by pollutants from vehicular emissions; Ibirapuera, affected by high O(3) concentrations; and a greenhouse with filtered air. Fifteen plants were quarterly removed from each site for analysis of antioxidants, growth and biomass. Plants growing in polluted sites showed alterations in their antioxidants. They were shorter, had thicker stems and produced less leaf biomass than plants maintained under filtered air. The fluctuations in the levels of antioxidants were significantly influenced by combined effects of climatic and pollution variables. The higher were the antioxidant responses and the concentrations of pollutant markers of air contamination in each site the slower were the growth and biomass production. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. A methodology for analyzing the solar access and its influence on both air temperature and thermal comfort of the urban environment was here developed by applying the potentiality of GIS tools. Urban canyons in a specific area of a Brazilian medium sized city were studied. First, a computational algorithm was applied in order to allow the determination of sky view factors (SVF) and sun-paths in urban canyons. Then, air temperatures in 40 measurement points were collected within the study area. Solar radiation values of these canyons were determined and subsequently stored in a GIS database. The creation of thermal maps for the whole neighbourhood was possible due to a statistical treatment of the data, by promoting the interpolation of values. All data could then be spatially cross-examined. In addition, thermal comfort maps for summer and winter periods were generated. The methodology allowed the identification of thermal tendencies within the neighbourhood, what can be useful in the conception of guidelines for urban planning purposes.

The urban microclimate plays an important role in building energy consumption and thermal comfort in outdoor spaces. Nowadays, cities need to increase energy efficiency, reduce pollutant emissions and mitigate the evident lack of sustainability. In light of this, attention has focused on the bioclimatic concepts use in the urban development. However, the speculative unsustainability of the growth model highlights the need to redirect the construction sector towards urban renovation using a bioclimatic approach. The public space plays a key role in improving the quality of today’s cities, especially in terms of providing places for citizens to meet and socialize in adequate thermal conditions. Thermal comfort affects perception of the environment, so microclimate conditions can be decisive for the success or failure of outdoor urban spaces and the activities held in them. For these reasons, the main focus of this work is on the definition of bioclimatic strategies for existing urban spaces, based on morpho-typological components, urban microclimate conditions and comfort requirements for all kinds of citizens. Two case studies were selected in Madrid, in a social housing neighbourhood constructed in the 1970s based on Rational Architecture style. Several renovation scenarios were performed using a computer simulation process based in ENVI-met and diverse microclimate conditions were compared. In addition, thermal comfort evaluation was carried out using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) in order to investigate the relationship between microclimate conditions and thermal comfort perception. This paper introduces the microclimate computer simulation process as a valuable support for decision-making for neighbourhood renovation projects in order to provide new and better solutions according to the thermal quality of public spaces and reducing energy consumption by creating and selecting better microclimate areas.
