Photophysics and photochemistry of cyclobutanethiones 1-5 have been studied with the view to generalize the a-cleavage reactions of cyclobutanethiones. The above cyclobutanethiones possess a unit intersystem crossing efficiency from S1 to T1, a high self-quenching rate (-4 X lo9 M-' s-'), and a short triplet lifetime (<0.50 ws). Photolysis of 1-5 yields in benzene a product resulting from 1,3-transposition and in methanol two cyclic thioacetals. The origin of these products is traced to the triplet excited state. A mechanistic scheme involving a-cleavage as the primary photoprocess and diradicals and thiacarbenes as intermediates has been formulated to rationalize the formation of thioacetals and rearranged products. The proposed mechanistic scheme is supported by UHF MIND013 calculations performed on four model systems, cyclobutanethiones and 1,3-cyclobutanedithiones 18-21. These calculations indicate that formation of diradical is favored thermodynamically and kinetically for systems analogous to 19 and 21, while rearrangement to thiacarbene is likely only for those similar to 21.

1,1,3-Trimethyl-2-thioxo-1,2-dihydronaphthale(1n)e adds to electron-rich olefins upon excitation to either Sz (PP*) or Sl (ns*) states. Excitation to S2 level resulted in the same mixture of products, namely thietane and 1,4-dithiane, as on excitation to S1 level. Addition occurs to the thiocarbonyl function and not to the carbon-carbon double bond. The addition is site-specific, and the formation of thietane is regiospecific. The ratio of thietane to 1,4-dithiane in the product mixture is dependent on the concentration of the thioenone. The addition is suggested to originate from the lowest triplet state (Tl) and involves diradical intermediates.

Electron-deficient olefins add to thioenone 1 upon m* excitation. Cycloaddition occurs to the thiocarbonyl chromophore preferentially from the less-hindered side to yield thietanes. Thietane formation is stereospecific and regioselective. This addition has been inferred to originate from the second excited singlet, S2(?rx*), state. The exciplex intermediacy has been inferred from the dependence of the fluorescence quenching rate constant on the electron-acceptor properties of the olefin. The observed site specificity and regioselectivity are rationalized on the basis of PMO theory. The observed photochemical behavior of thioenone is different from that of enones.

Rearrangement of a homobrendane derivative 8a to perhydro-1,4-methanoindenesy stem 9a could be brought about either by p-toluenesulfonic acid or boron trifluoride etherate. Similarly, rearrangement of 8b-d led to the formation of perhydro-1,4-methanoindened erivatives 9b-d. On the basis of the location of substituents in the starting material and the product, a probable mechanistic pathway has been suggested. The appropriate modification of the peripheral functionalities in 9 led to efficient total syntheses of (f)-copacamphor (15a),(f)-ylangocamphor (16a), and their homologues 15b and 16b.

A novel synthetic approach towards the recently reported anti-tumor and anti-tuberculor natural product ottelione A from the readily available Diels-Alder adduct of cyclopentadiene and p-benzoquinone is delineated. Our short strategy, besides being enantio-, regio- and stereoselective, charts an eventful course and is inherently well-suited for adaptation towards diverse synthetic analogues of this biologically potent natural product.

A new case of the uncommon cis-trans enantiomerism is presented. The titled anhydride adducts were prepared in good yields by the known reaction of three 6-arylfulvenes with maleic anhydride (aryl = phenyl, p-tolyl and p-anisyl). The exo adducts were converted to the corresponding imides by reaction with (1S)-1-(naphth-1-yl)ethylamine in similar to 80% yields, and the resulting diastereomeric imides separated by silica gel column chromatography. They were hydrolysed and recyclised to the chiral anhydrides, in `one-pot' with 10% NaOH-EtOH, followed by treatment with 2 M HCl, in similar to 40% yields. The titled anhydrides were thus obtained in homochiral form, in enantiomeric purities (generally) of similar to 90% as indicated by chiral HPLC. The chiral anhydrides were also converted to the corresponding imides (presumably stereospecifically), by treatment with ammonia solution in excellent yields. The crystal structure of one of the above diastereomeric imides (derived from 6-phenylfulvene) was determined, and based on the known (S)-configuration of the naphthylethylamine moiety, the `configurations' of the original anhydride adducts were assigned. As a consequence of the advancing age profile of the global population, particularly in developed nations,nerrodegener-ative disorders such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons diseases have emerged as a major public health concern. In this regard, neurotrophic agents, which have been implicated in the maintenance and growth of neurons as well as prevention of neuronal death, are being considered as potential leads for therapeutic development.

An acid catalysed rearrangement was employed for the enantiospecific conversion of isotwistanol to tricyclo5.2.1.0(4.8)]-decanes, which provided support for the proposed biosynthesis of allopupukeananes from pupukeananes. The strategy has been further extended to the enantiospecific synthesis of a homobrexane. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Molecules pack in fl-type stacking mode which is characterized by the close packing of parallel and nearly planar reactive double bonds with a separation of 3.900/~ along the a axis. The syn head-head dimer obtained is the direct consequence of this packing arrangement. Molecular packing is stabilized by intermolecular C-H...O hydrogen bonding. Analysis of acetoxy...acetoxy interactions in the acetoxy compounds retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database reveal that the majority of them are anti-dipolar.
