Solar hydrogen production assisted with semiconductor materials is a promising way to provide alternative energy sources in the future. Such a photocatalytic reaction normally takes place on the active sites of the catalysts surface, and the identification of the active sites is crucial for understanding the photocatalytic reaction mechanism and further improving the photocatalytic efficiency. However, the active sites of model catalysts are still largely disputed because of their structural complexity. Conventionally, H-2 evolution from solar water splitting over Pt/TiO2 is widely deemed to take place on metallic Pt nanoparticles. Oppositely, we report through a combined experimental and theoretical approach, that metallic Pt nanoparticles have little contribution to the activity of photocatalytic H-2 evolution; the oxidized Pt species embedded on the TiO2 surface are the key active sites and primarily responsible for the activity of the hydrogen evolution Pt/TiO2 photocatalyst.

Reduced TiO2 (110) surfaces usually have OH groups as a result of H2O dissociation at oxygen vacancy defects. Because of excess electrons due to OH adsorption, OH/TiO2. exhibit interesting properties favorable to further O-2 or H2O adsorption. Both O-2 and H2O can adsorb and easily diffuse on the OH/TiO2 surface; such behavior plays a significant role in photocatalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, electronic devices and sensors. Indeed, the processes of H2O dissociation, O-2 and H2O diffusion on Such TiO2 surfaces, in the presence of OH groups, are important issues in their own right. Herein, the most recent experimental and theoretical progresses in understanding the interactions between adsorbed OH groups and O-2, or H2O, over TiO2 (110) surfaces and their implications will be reviewed. Titanium dioxide coatings have potential applications including photocatalysts for solar assisted hydrogen production, solar water disinfection and self-cleaning windows. Herein, we report the use of suspension plasma spraying (SPS) for the deposition of conformal titanium dioxide coatings. The process utilises a nanoparticle slurry of TiO2 (ca. 6 and 12 nm respectively) in water, which is fed into a high temperature plasma jet (ca. 7000-20 000 K). This facilitated the deposition of adherent coatings of nanostructured titanium dioxide with predominantly anatase crystal structure. In this study, suspensions of nano-titanium dioxide, made via continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS), were used directly as a feedstock for the SPS process. Coatings were produced by varying the feedstock crystallite size, spray distance and plasma conditions. The coatings produced exhibited ca. 90-100% anatase phase content with the remainder being rutile (demonstrated by XRD). Phase distribution was homogenous throughout the coatings as determined by micro-Raman spectroscopy. The coatings had a granular surface, with a high specific surface area and consisted of densely packed agglomerates interspersed with some melted material. All of the coatings were shown to be photoactive by means of a sacrificial hydrogen evolution test under UV radiation and compared favourably with reported values for CVD coatings and compressed discs of P25.

With a new test facility, we have investigated fretting fatigue properties of Ti-1023 titanium alloy at different contact pressure. Both fatigue fracture and fretting scar were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Moreover, the depth of crack initiation area in fatigue fracture has been analyzed quantitatively, to investigate the relationship between the depth of crack initiation area and the fretting fatigue strength. The changing trends of the depth of crack initiation area and fretting fatigue strength with the increase of contact pressure show obvious opposite correlations. The depth of crack initiation area increases rapidly with the increase of contact pressure at low contact pressure (smaller than 10 MPa), and the fretting fatigue strength drops rapidly. At the contact pressure of 10–45 MPa, both the depth of crack initiation area and the fretting fatigue strength do not vary significantly. Contact pressure influences fatigue strength through influencing the initiation of fatigue crack. The main damage patterns are fatigue flake and plow.

By using polycapillary lenses to focus laser-produced x-ray sources to high intensities, an improvement in signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved. Here the He-alpha line emission produced by driving a titanium backlighter target is focused by a polycapillary lens and the output characterized. The x-ray spot is measured to have a peak intensity of 4.5 x 10(7) photons, with a total photon count of 8.8 x 10(8) in 0.13 +/- 0.01 mm(2). This setup is equivalent to placing the backlighter target 3 mm from the sample with a 600 mu m diameter pinhole. The polycapillary lens enables the placement of the backlighter target at a much larger distance from the sample to be studied and therefore has the ability to greatly improve the signal-to-noise ratio on detectors. We demonstrate this with two simple diffraction experiments using pyrolytic graphite and polycrystalline aluminium.

In this work, the impact of conventional drilling and helical milling processes on the fatigue response Ti-6Al-4V (grade 5 titanium alloy) has been presented. Results show that the work pieces produced by helical milling has a 119% longer fatigue life compared with the drilled pieces under dry machining condition, and a 96% longer fatigue life for helical milled piece under lubricated condition. The use of cutting fluid has led to longer fatigue lives – 15% longer for drilling and 3% longer for helical milling. Other results such as the machined surface roughness, alloy surface and sub-surface microstructures have also been studied in details.

In Boolean games, agents try to reach a goal formulated as a Boolean formula. These games are attractive because of their compact representations. However, few methods are available to compute the solutions and they are either limited or do not take privacy or communication concerns into account. In this paper we propose the use of an algorithm related to reinforcement learning to address this problem. Our method is decentralized in the sense that agents try to achieve their goals without knowledge of the other agents’ goals. We prove that this is a sound method to compute a Pareto optimal pure Nash equilibrium for an interesting class of Boolean games. Experimental results are used to investigate the performance of the algorithm.

The interaction between the face coat material of a mould and the titanium alloy will cause oxygen penetration during the casting and solidification process, resulting in the formation of an α-case interaction layer at the metal surface that influences the mechanical properties of the cast components. In this study, the influence of α-case thickness and loading positions in a Ti–6Al–4V (Ti64) alloy on metal hardness, impact properties and bending strength was investigated. The results showed that the metal surface α-case consisted of many coarse α laths which has a higher hardness than metal matrix. The mechanical properties of the alloy are influenced by the α-case. The alloy bending strength was observed to have changed linearly with the thickness of sample.

Beta-type Ti-alloy is a promising biomedical implant material as it has a low Young’s modulus and is also known to have inferior surface hardness. Various surface treatments can be applied to enhance the surface hardness. Physical vapor deposition and chemical vapor deposition are two examples of this but these techniques have limitations such as poor interfacial adhesion and high distortion. Laser surface treatment is a relatively new surface modification method to enhance the surface hardness but its application is still not accepted by the industry. The major problem of this process involves surface melting which results in higher surface roughness after the laser surface treatment. This paper will report the results achieved by a 100 W continuous wave (CW) fiber laser for laser surface treatment without the surface being melted. Laser processing parameters were carefully selected so that the surface could be treated without surface melting and thus the surface finish of the component could be maintained. The surface and microstructural characteristics of the treated samples were examined using x-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, three-dimensional surface profile and contact angle measurements, and nanoindentation test.

Currently, micro-joining of plastic parts to metal parts in medical devices is achieved by using medical adhesives, For example, pacemakers, defibrillators and neurological stimulators are designed using silicone adhesive to seal the joint between the polyurethane connector module and the titanium can [1]. Nevertheless, the use of adhesive is problematic because it requires a long time to cure and has high tendency to produce leachable products which might be harmful to the human body. An alternative for directly joining plastics to metal without adhesive is therefore required. Laser transmission joining (LTJ) is growing in importance, and has the potential to gain the niche in micro-fabrication of plastics-metal hybrid joints for medical device applications. The possibility of directly joining plastics to metal by LTJ technique have been demonstrated by a number of studies in recent literature [2]. The widely-accepted understanding of LTJ between plastics and metal is that generation and rapid expansion of micro-bubbles at the plastics-metal interface exert high local pressure to press the melted plastics towards the metal surface features during the laser processing [2]. This subsequently creates the plastics-metal hybrid joint by the mechanisms of mechanical interlocking as well as chemical and physical bonds between the plastics and metal surfaces. Although the micro-bubbles can help promote the mechanical interlocking effect to increase the joint strength, the creation of bubble is a random and complex process depending on the complicated interactions between the laser intensity, thermal degradation properties of plastics, surface temperature and topographical features of metal. In an ideal situation, it is desirable to create the hybrid plastics-metal joint without bubbles. However, the mechanical performance of the hybrid plastics-metal joint without bubbles is still unknown, and systematic comparison between the hybrid joints with and without bubbles is lacking in literature. This becomes the objective of this study. In this work, the laser process parameters were carefully chosen from a preliminary study, such that different hybrid joints: with and without bubbles can be produced and compared. Biocompatible PET and commercially pure Ti were selected as materials for laser joining.
