In this thesis mainly two alternating indenofluorene-phenanthrene copolymers were investigated with a variety of spectroscopic and optoelectronic experiments. The different experimental techniques allowed to retrieve deeper insights into their unique optical as well as optoelectronic properties. The motivation of the research presented in this work was to correlate their photophysical properties with respect to their application in electrically pumped lasing. This thesis begins with the description of optical properties studied by classical absorption and emission spectroscopy and successively describes an overall picture regarding their excited state dynamics occurring after photoexcitation studied by time-resolved spectroscopy. The different spectroscopic methods do not only allow to elucidate the different optical transitions occurring in this class of materials, but also contribute to a better understanding of exciton dynamics and exciton interaction with respect to the molecular structure as well as aggregation and photooxidation of the polymers. Furthermore, the stimulated emission properties were analyzed by amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) experiments. Especially one of the investigated materials, called BLUE-1, showed outstanding optical properties including a high optical gain, a low threshold for ASE and low optical losses. Apart from the optical experiments, the charge carrier mobility was measured with the time-of-flight technique and a comparably high hole mobility on the order of 1 x 10-² cm²/(Vs) was determined for BLUE-1 which makes this material promising for organic lasing. The impact of the high charge carrier mobility in this material class was further analyzed in different optoelectronic devices such as organic LEDs (OLEDs) and organic solar cells.

The EBPR (Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal) is a type of secondary treatment in WWTPs (WasteWater Treatment Plants), quite largely used in full-scale plants worldwide. The phosphorus occurring in aquatic systems in high amounts can cause eutrophication and consequently the death of fauna and flora. A specific biomass is used in order to remove the phosphorus, the so-called PAOs (Polyphosphate Accumulating Organisms) that accumulate the phosphorus in form of polyphosphate in their cells. Some of these organisms, the so-called DPAO (Denitrifying Polyphosphate Accumulating Organisms) use as electron acceptor the nitrate or nitrite, contributing in this way also to the removal of these compounds from the wastewater, but there could be side reactions leading to the formation of nitrous oxides. The aim of this project was to simulate in laboratory scale a EBPR, acclimatizing and enriching the specialized biomass. Two bioreactors were operated as Sequencing Batch Reactors, one enriched in Accumulibacter, the other in Tetrasphaera (both PAOs): Tetrasphaera microorganisms are able to uptake aminoacids as carbon source, Accumulibacter uptake organic carbon (volatile fatty acids, VFA). In order to measure the removal of COD, phosphorus and nitrogen-derivate compounds, different analysis were performed: spectrophotometric measure of phosphorus, nitrate, nitrite and ammonia concentrations, TOC (Total Organic Carbon, measuring the carbon consumption), VFA via HPLC (High Performance Liquid Chromatography), total and volatile suspended solids following standard methods APHA, qualitative microorganism population via FISH (Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization). Batch test were also performed to monitor the NOx production. Both specialized populations accumulated as a result of SBR operations; however, Accumulibacter were found to uptake phosphates at higher extents. Both populations were able to remove efficiently nitrates and organic compounds occurring in the feeding. The experimental work was carried out at FCT of Universidade Nova de Lisboa (FCT-UNL) from February to July 2014.

Excessive Cladophora growth in the Great Lakes has led to beach fouling and the temporary closure of nuclear power plants and has been associated with avian botulism and the persistence of human pathogens. As the growth-limiting nutrient for Cladophora, phosphorus is the appropriate target for management efforts. Dreissenids (zebra and quagga mussels) have the ability to capture particulate phase phosphorus (otherwise unavailable to Cladophora) and release it in a soluble, available form. The significance of this potential nutrient source is, in part, influenced by the interplay between phosphorus flux from the mussel bed and turbulent mixing in establishing the phosphorus levels to which Cladophora is exposed. It is hypothesized that under quiescent conditions phosphorus will accumulate near the sediment-water interface, setting up vertical phosphorus gradients and favorable conditions for resource delivery to Cladophora. These gradients would be eliminated under conditions of wind mixing, reducing the significance of the dreissenid-mediated nutrient contribution. Soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) levels were monitored over dreissenid beds (densities on the order of 350•m-2 and 3000∙m-2) at a site 8 m deep in Lake Michigan. Monitoring was based on the deployment of Modified Hesslein Samplers which collected samples for SRP analysis over a distance of 34 cm above the bottom in 2.5 cm intervals. Deployment intervals were established to capture a wind regime (calm, windy) that persisted for an interval consistent with the sampler equilibration time of 7 hours. Results indicate that increased mussel density leads to an increased concentration boundary layer; increased wind speed leads to entrainment of the concentration boundary layer; and increased duration of quiescent periods leads to an increased concentration boundary layer. This concentration boundary layer is of ecological significance and forms in the region inhabited by Cladophora

OBJECTIVES: Premature babies require supplementation with calcium and phosphorus to prevent metabolic bone disease of prematurity. To guide mineral supplementation, two methods of monitoring urinary excretion of calcium and phosphorus are used: urinary calcium or phosphorus concentration and calcium/creatinine or phosphorus/creatinine ratios. We compare these two methods in regards to their agreement on the need for mineral supplementation. METHODS: Retrospective chart review of 230 premature babies with birthweight <1500 g, undergoing screening of urinary spot samples from day 21 of life and fortnightly thereafter. Hypothetical cut-off values for urine calcium or phosphorus concentration (1 mmol/l) and urine calcium/creatinine ratio (0.5 mol/mol) or phosphorus/creatinine ratio (4 mol/mol) were applied to the sample results. The agreement on whether or not to supplement the respective minerals based on the results with the two methods was compared. Multivariate general linear models sought to identify patient characteristic to predict disagreeing results. RESULTS: 24.8% of cases disagreed on the indication for calcium supplementation, 8.8% for phosphorus. Total daily calcium intake was the only patient characteristic associated with discordant results. CONCLUSIONS: With the intention to supplement the respective mineral, comparison of urinary mineral concentration with mineral/creatinine ratio is moderate for Calcium and good for Phosphorus. The results do not allow to identify superiority of either method on the decision which babies require calcium and/or phosphorus supplements.

Abstract We demonstrate the use of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIRS) to make quantitative measures of total organic carbon (TOC), total inorganic carbon (TIC) and biogenic silica (BSi) concentrations in sediment. FTIRS is a fast and costeffective technique and only small sediment samples are needed (0.01 g). Statistically significant models were developed using sediment samples from northern Sweden and were applied to sediment records from Sweden, northeast Siberia and Macedonia. The correlation between FTIRS-inferred values and amounts of biogeochemical constituents assessed conventionally varied between r = 0.84–0.99 for TOC, r = 0.85– 0.99 for TIC, and r = 0.68–0.94 for BSi. Because FTIR spectra contain information on a large number of both inorganic and organic components, there is great potential for FTIRS to become an important tool in paleolimnology.

The dynamics of phytoplankton and nutrients before, during and after the winter-spring bloom on Georges Bank were studied on 6 monthly survey cruises from January to June 1999. We measured hydrography, phytoplankton cell densities, chlorophyll a, dissolved inorganic nutrients (NO3 + NO2, NH4, Si(OH)(4), PO4), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and phosphorus (DOP), particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) and total particulate phosphorus (TPP). We present evidence that phytoplankton production may be significant year-round, and that the winter-spring bloom may have started in January. From January to April the phytoplankton was comprised almost exclusively of diatoms, reaching cell densities in March and April of ca. 450 cells ml(-1); chlorophyll a concentrations exceeded 10 mug l(-1) in April. Diatoms decreased to relatively low levels in May (< 50 x 10(3) cells l(-1)) and increased again in June (>300 x 10(3) cells l(-1)). Densities of dinoflagellates and nanoflagellates were low (< 10 x 10(3) cells l(-1)) from January to April, and increased in May and June to nearly 300 x 10(3) cells l(-1). Nitrate + nitrite concentrations in January were <3 muM in the shallow, central portion of the bank and decreased steadily each month. Silicate was also <3 muM over an even larger area of the central bank in January and declined to <1.5 muM over most of the Bank in April. The data suggest that silicate depletion, not DIN, contributed to the cessation of the diatom bloom. Regeneration of silicate occurred in May and June, presumably as a result of rising water temperatures in late spring which increased the dissolution rate of diatom frustules from the earlier diatom bloom. Dissolved organic nitrogen may have been utilized at the start of the winter-spring bloom; concentrations were ca, 14 muM in January, dropping to < 6 mug l(-1) in February, after which DON concentrations steadily rose to > 15 mug l(-1) in June. Overall micro-and nanoplankton biomass, measured as POC, PON and TPP, increased over the 6 mo period, as did nutritional quality of that biomass as indicated by declining C:N ratios. Our results suggest there may have been an increase in the heterotrophic component of the plankton in May and June which coincided with a second burst in diatom abundance. We discuss general features of planktonic production and nutrient dynamics with respect to year-round production on the Bank.

68 lakes (63 Swiss, 2 French and 3 Italian) located in an altitudinal range between 334 and 2339m spanning a wide range of land-use have been investigated. The aim of the study was to discuss influences of geographic location, vegetation and land-use in the catchment area on the water and sediment chemistry of small lakes. Detailed quantitative description of land-use, vegetation, and climate in the watershed of all lakes was established. Surface and bottom water samples collected from each lake were analyzed for major ions and nutrients. Correlations were interpreted using linear regression analysis. Chemical parameters of water and sediment reflect the characteristics of the catchment areas. All lakes were alkaline since they were situated on calcareous bedrock. Concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus strongly increase with increasing agricultural land-use. Na and K, however, are positively correlated with the amount of urbanization within the catchment area. These elements as well as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), Mg, Ca, and alkalinity, increase when the catchment is urbanized or used for agriculture. Total nitrogen and organic carbon in the sediments decrease distinctly if large parts of the catchment consist of bare land. No correlations between sediment composition and maximum water depth or altitude of the lakes were found.¶Striking differences in the water compositions of lakes above and below approximately 700 m of altitude were observed. Concentrations of total nitrogen and nitrate, total phosphorus, DOC, Na, K, Mg, Ca, and alkalinity are distinctly higher in most lakes below 700 m than above, and the pH of the bottom waters of these lakes is generally lower. Estimates of total nitrogen concentrations, even in remote areas, indicate that precipitation is responsible for increased background concentrations. At lower altitudes nitrogen concentrations in lakes is explained by the nitrogen loaded rain from urban areas deposited on the catchment, and with high percentages of agricultural land-use in the watershed.

Three lower Barremian to middle/upper Cenomanian samples from DSDP Hole 549 and three lower Cenomanian to lower Maestrichtian samples from DSDP Hole 550B were investigated by organic geochemical and organic petrographic methods. The samples came from wells drilled in the area of the Goban Spur in the northeastern Atlantic; they represent gray to greenish gray carbonaceous mud or siltstones from the deeper parts of the Cretaceous sequences penetrated and light-colored chalks from the shallower ones. The total amount of organic carbon is below 1% in all samples; it is especially low in the Cenomanian to Maestrichtian chalks. Terrigenous organic matter predominates; only the Barremian sample shows a moderate number of marine phytoclasts. As indicated by several parameters, the maturity of the organic matter is low, corresponding to about 0.4% vitrinite reflectance.

Thin but discrete pelagic limestone beds intercalated among the black mudstones near the top of the extensive Mesozoic black shale sequence of the Falkland Plateau are reminiscent of similar occurrences in the central and North Atlantic and may be cyclic in nature. They have been studied via carbonate, organic carbon, stable isotope, nannofloral, and ultrastructural analysis in an attempt to determine their mode of origin. Nannofossil diversity and preservation suggest that selective dissolution or diagenesis did not produce the interbedded coccolith-rich and coccolith-poor layers, nor did blooms of opportunistic species play a role. Stable isotope measurements of carbonate do not adequately constrain the origin of the cyclicity; however, the d13C data suggest that the more nannofossil-rich intervals may be due to higher nutrient supply and overturn of deeper waters at the site rather than influxes of well-oxygenated waters into an otherwise anoxic environment. Such an explanation is in accord with the nannofloral evidence

Regional consequences of the biotic extinctions and of the changes in biological productivity that occurred at the time of the Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary were investigated by comparison of organic matter in sediments from three southern Tethyan margin locations. Organic matter characterization comprised Rock-Eval pyrolysis and organic carbon measurements. Low concentrations of organic matter precluded additional detailed determinations. At all three locations, the organic matter has been microbially reworked and evidently was deposited in oxygenated marine environments.

Data are presented on concentrations of aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AHC and PAH) in interstitial waters and bottom sediments of the Kara Sea compared to distribution of particulate matter and organic carbon. It was found that AHC concentrations within the water mass (aver. 16 µg/l) are mainly formed by natural processes. Distribution of AHC represents variability of hydrological and sedimentation processes in different regions of the sea. The widest ranges of the concentrations occurred in the Obskaya Guba - Kara Sea section: in water (10-310 µg/l for AHC and 0.4-7.2 ng/l for PAH) and in the surface layer of the bottom sediments (8-42 µg/l for AHC and 9-94 ng/g for PAH). Differentiation of hydrocarbons (HC) in different media follows regularities typical for marginal filters; therefore no oil and pyrogenic compounds are supplied to the open sea. In sediments contents of HC depend on variations in redox conditions in sediments and on their composition.

Using methods of analysis from organic geochemistry and organic petrography, we investigated six Pliocene to Maestrichtian samples from DSDP Site 612 and five Pliocene to Eocene samples from DSDP Site 613 for the quantity, type, and thermal maturity of organic matter. At both sites, organic carbon content is low in the Eocene samples (0.10 to 0.20%) and relatively high in the Pliocene/Miocene samples (0.87 to 1.15%). The Maestrichtian samples from Site 612 contain about 0.6% organic carbon. The organic matter is predominantly terrigenous, as indicated by low hydrogen index values from Rock-Eval pyrolysis and the dominance of long-chain wax alkanes in the extractable hydrocarbons. The organic matter is at a low level of thermal maturity; measured vitrinite reflectance values were between 0.27 and 0.44%.
