In order to elucidate possibility of limestone phosphatization during contact with seawater two sets of experiments were carried out: that of solubility of natural phosphates in seawater and that of deposition of phosphorus onto calcareous phase. Concentration of phosphorus in seawater used for solubility experiments varied from 39 to 338 µ/l, temperature was 5.5-17.5°C and pH 7.8-7.9. The lowest solubility was characteristic of ancient crystallized samples. The deposition experiments showed that in case when concentration of dissolved phosphate in seawater reaches 3 mg/l it might be sorbed on solid CaCO3 phase without forming its own mineral. The latter is able to form rapidly but only if magnesium is not present in solution. In magnesium-free water calcium phosphates precipitate when concentration of dissolved phosphorus is higher than 0.9-1.2 mg/l. These results show that phosphatization of limestones in marine environment takes place during their contact with pore water but not with marine bottom water.

The speciation of strongly chelated iron during the 22-day course of an iron enrichment experiment in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean deviates strongly from ambient natural waters. Three iron additions (ferrous sulfate solution) were conducted, resulting in elevated dissolved iron concentrations (Nishioka, J., Takeda, S., de Baar, H.J.W., Croot, P.L., Boye, M., Laan, P., Timmermans, K.R., 2005, Changes in the concentration of iron in different size fractions during an iron enrichment experiment in the open Southern Ocean. Repeated vertical profiles for dissolved (filtrate < 0.2 µm) Fe(III)-binding ligands indicated a production of chelators in the upper water column induced by iron fertilizations. Abiotic processes (chemical reactions) and an inductive biologically mediated mechanism were the likely sources of the dissolved ligands which existed either as inorganic amorphous phases and/or as strong organic chelators. Discrete analysis on ultra-filtered samples (< 200 kDa) suggested that the produced ligands would be principally colloidal in size (> 200 kDa-< 0.2 µm), as opposed to the soluble fraction (< 200 kDa) which dominated prior to the iron infusions. Yet these colloidal ligands would exist in a more transient nature than soluble ligands which may have a longer residence time. The production of dissolved Fe-chelators was generally smaller than the overall increase in dissolved iron in the surface infused mixed layer, leaving a fraction (about 13-40%) of dissolved Fe not bound by these dissolved Fe-chelators. It is suggested that this fraction would be inorganic colloids. The unexpected persistence of such high inorganic colloids concentrations above inorganic Fe-solubility limits illustrates the peculiar features of the chemical iron cycling in these waters. Obviously, the artificial about hundred-fold increase of overall Fe levels by addition of dissolved inorganic Fe(II) ions yields a major disruption of the natural physical-chemical abundances and reactivity of Fe in seawater. Hence the ensuing responses of the plankton ecosystem, while in itself significant, are not necessarily representative for a natural enrichment, for example by dry or wet deposition of aeolian dust. Ultimately, the temporal changes of the Fe(III)-binding ligand and iron concentrations were dominated by the mixing events that occurred during EISENEX, with storms leading to more than an order of magnitude dilution of the dissolved ligands and iron concentrations. This had strongest impact on the colloidal size class (> 200 kDa-< 0.2 µm) where a dramatic decrease of both the colloidal ligand and the colloidal iron levels (Nishioka, J., Takeda, S., de Baar, H.J.W., Croot, P.L., Boye, M., Laan, P., Timmermans, K.R., 2005, Changes in the concentration of iron in different size fractions during an iron enrichment experiment in the open Southern Ocean. Relatively few cyclic peptides have reached the pharmaceutical marketplace during the past decade, most produced through fermentation rather than made synthetically. Generally, this class of compounds is synthesized for research purposes on milligram scales by solid-phase methods, but if the potential of macrocyclic peptidomimetics is to be realized, low-cost larger scale solution-phase syntheses need to be devised and optimized to provide sufficient quantities for preclinical, clinical, and commercial uses. Here, we describe a cheap, medium-scale, solution-phase synthesis of the first reported highly potent, selective, and orally active antagonist of the human C5a receptor. This compound, Ac-Phe[Orn-Pro-D-Cha-Trp-Arg], known as 3D53, is a macrocyclic peptidomimetic of the human plasma protein C5a and displays excellent antiinflammatory activity in numerous animal models of human disease. In a convergent approach, two tripeptide fragments Ac-Phe-Orn-(Boc)-Pro-OH and H-D-Cha-Trp(For)-Arg-OEt were first prepared by high-yielding solution-phase couplings using a mixed anhydride method before coupling them to give a linear hexapeptide which, after deprotection, was obtained in 38% overall yield from the commercially available amino acids. Cyclization in solution using BOP reagent gave the antagonist in 33% yield (13% overall) after HPLC purification. Significant features of the synthesis were that the Arg side chain was left unprotected throughout, the component Boe-D-Cha-OH was obtained very efficiently via hydrogenation Of D-Phe with PtO2 in TFA/water, the tripeptides were coupled at the Pro-Cha junction to minimize racemization via the oxazolone pathway, and the entire synthesis was carried out without purification of any intermediates. The target cyclic product was purified (>97%) by reversed-phase HPLC. This convergent synthesis with minimal use of protecting groups allowed batches of 50100 g to be prepared efficiently in high yield using standard laboratory equipment. This type of procedure should be useful for making even larger quantities of this and other macrocyclic peptidomimetic drugs.

This paper evaluates a new, low-frequency finite-difference time-domain method applied to the problem of induced E-fields/eddy currents in the human body resulting from the pulsed magnetic field gradients in MRI. In this algorithm, a distributed equivalent magnetic current is proposed as the electromagnetic source and is obtained by quasistatic calculation of the empty coil's vector potential or measurements therein. This technique circumvents the discretization of complicated gradient coil geometries into a mesh of Yee cells, and thereby enables any type of gradient coil modelling or other complex low frequency sources. The proposed method has been verified against an example with an analytical solution. Results are presented showing the spatial distribution of gradient-induced electric fields in a multi-layered spherical phantom model and a complete body model. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. Adsorbents from coal fly ash treated by a solid-state fusion method using NaOH were prepared. It was found that amorphous aluminosilicate, geopolymers would be formed. These fly ash-derived inorganic polymers were assessed as potential adsorbents for removal of some basic dyes, methylene blue and crystal violet, from aqueous solution. It was found that the adsorption capacity of the synthesised adsorbents depends on the preparation conditions such as NaOH:fly-ash ratio and fusion temperature with the optimal conditions being at 121 weight ratio of Na:fly-ash at 250-350 degrees C. The synthesised materials exhibit much higher adsorption capacity than fly ash itself and natural zeolite. The adsorption isotherm can be fitted by Langmuir and Freundlich models while the two-site Langmuir model producing the best results. It was also found that the fly ash derived geopolymeric adsorbents show higher adsorption capacity for crystal violet than methylene blue and the adsorption temperature influences the adsorption capacity.
