Thermodynamic constraints on component chemical potentials in three-phase fields introduced by the various isograms suggested in the literature are derived for a ternary system containing compounds. When compositions of two compounds lie on an isogram, it is associated with specific characteristics which can be used to obtain further understanding of the interplay of thermodynamic factors that determine phase equilibria. When two compounds are shared by adjacent three-phase fields, the constraints are dictated by binary compositions generated by the intersection of a line passing through the shared compounds with the sides of the ternary triangle. Generalized expressions for an arbitrary line through the triangle are presented. These are consistent with special relations obtained along Kohler, Colinet and Jacob isograms. Five axioms are introduced and proved. They provide valuable tools for checking consistency of thermodynamic measurements and for deriving thermodynamic properties from phase diagrams. We describe here two non-interferometric methods for the estimation of the phase of transmitted wavefronts through refracting objects. The phase of the wavefronts obtained is used to reconstruct either the refractive index distribution of the objects or their contours. Refraction corrected reconstructions are obtained by the application of an iterative loop incorporating digital ray tracing for forward propagation and a modified filtered back projection (FBP) for reconstruction. The FBP is modified to take into account non-straight path propagation of light through the object. When the iteration stagnates, the difference between the projection data and an estimate of it obtained by ray tracing through the final reconstruction is reconstructed using a diffraction tomography algorithm. The reconstruction so obtained, viewed as a correction term, is added to the estimate of the object from the loop to obtain an improved final refractive index reconstruction.

Naturally occurring zircon sand was plasma spray coated on steel substrates previously coated with NiCrAlY bond coat. The coatings were characterized for their microstructure, chemical composition, thermal shock resistance, and the nature of structural phases present, The as-sprayed coatings consisted of t-ZrO2 (major phase), m-ZrO2, ZrSiO4 (minor phases), and amorphous SiO2. These coatings, when annealed at 1200 degrees C/1.44 x 10(4) s yielded a ZrSiO4 phase as a result of the reaction between ZrO2 and SiO2, Dramatic changes occurred in the characteristics of the coatings when a mixture of zircon sand and Y2O3 was plasma spray coated and annealed at 1400 degrees C/1.44 x 10(4) s, The t-ZrO2 phase was completely stabilized, and these coatings were found to have considerable potential for thermal barrier applications.

An in-situ power monitoring technique for Dynamic Voltage and Threshold scaling (DVTS) systems is proposed which measures total power consumed by load circuit using sleep transistor acting as power sensor. Design details of power monitor are examined using simulation framework in UMC 90nm CMOS process. Experimental results of test chip fabricated in AMS 0.35µm CMOS process are presented. The test chip has variable activity between 0.05 and 0.5 and has PMOS VTH control through nWell contact. Maximum resolution obtained from power monitor is 0.25mV. Overhead of power monitor in terms of its power consumption is 0.244 mW (2.2% of total power of load circuit). Lastly, power monitor is used to demonstrate closed loop DVTS system. DVTS algorithm shows 46.3% power savings using in-situ power monitor.

Owing to the increased customer demands for make-to-order products and smaller product life-cycles, today assembly lines are designed to ensure a quick switch-over from one product model to another for companies' survival in market place. The complexity associated with the decisions pertaining to the type of training and number of workers and their exposition to the different tasks especially in the current era of customized production is a serious problem that the managers and the HRD gurus are facing in industry. This paper aims to determine the amount of cross-training and dynamic deployment policy caused by workforce flexibility for a make-to-order assembly. The aforementioned issues have been dealt with by adopting the concept of evolutionary fuzzy system because of the linguistic nature of the attributes associated with product variety and task complexity. A fuzzy system-based methodology is proposed to determine the amount of cross-training and dynamic deployment policy. The proposed methodology is tested on 10 sample products of varying complexities and the results obtained are in line with the conclusions drawn by previous researchers.

The Co(II)TPP(Py) complex was used as an efficient dioxygen carrier for the radical polymerization of 1,1-diphenylethylene (DPE), which has a low ceiling temperature, at ambient temperature and low oxygen pressure. The mechanism of polymerization is discussed' on the basis of kinetic data, W-vis, ESR, and H-1 NMR studies. The rate of polymerization (RP) and number-average molecular weights (M) of poly(1,1-diphenylethylene peroxide) (PDPEP) are higher and the polydispersity is lower than in 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) initiated polymerization. PDPEP was further. used as a macroinitiator for the polymerization of MMA. The polymerization obeys classical kinetics. The K-2 value of the PDPEP has been determined from the slope of R-P(2) VS [M](2)[I], which reveals that it can also be used at higher temperature for the polymerization. An "active" PMMA was also synthesized, containing initiating segments in the polymer backbone.

An understanding of application I/O access patterns is useful in several situations. First, gaining insight into what applications are doing with their data at a semantic level helps in designing efficient storage systems. Second, it helps create benchmarks that mimic realistic application behavior closely. Third, it enables autonomic systems as the information obtained can be used to adapt the system in a closed loop. All these use cases require the ability to extract the application-level semantics of I/O operations. Methods such as modifying application code to associate I/O operations with semantic tags are intrusive. It is well known that network file system traces are an important source of information that can be obtained non-intrusively and analyzed either online or offline. These traces are a sequence of primitive file system operations and their parameters. Simple counting, statistical analysis or deterministic search techniques are inadequate for discovering application-level semantics in the general case, because of the inherent variation and noise in realistic traces. In this paper, we describe a trace analysis methodology based on Profile Hidden Markov Models. We show that the methodology has powerful discriminatory capabilities that enable it to recognize applications based on the patterns in the traces, and to mark out regions in a long trace that encapsulate sets of primitive operations that represent higher-level application actions. It is robust enough that it can work around discrepancies between training and target traces such as in length and interleaving with other operations. We demonstrate the feasibility of recognizing patterns based on a small sampling of the trace, enabling faster trace analysis. Preliminary experiments show that the method is capable of learning accurate profile models on live traces in an online setting. We present a detailed evaluation of this methodology in a UNIX environment using NFS traces of selected commonly used applications such as compilations as well as on industrial strength benchmarks such as TPC-C and Postmark, and discuss its capabilities and limitations in the context of the use cases mentioned above.

This includes metal films, semi-conductors, metallic oxides and inhomogeneous systems such as composites. The review contains a basic introduction to this field, the theories and models and follows it up with a discussion on measurement methods. There are discussions on specific examples of the application of noise spectroscopy in the field of materials science. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the framework of a project aimed at developing a reliable hydrogen generator for mobile polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), particular emphasis has been addressed to the analysis of catalysts able to assure high activity and stability in transient operations (frequent start-up and shut-down cycles). In this paper, the catalytic performance of 1 at.% Pt/ceria samples prepared by coprecipitation, impregnation and combustion, has been evaluated in the partial oxidation of methane. Methane conversion and hydrogen selectivity of 96 and 99%, respectively, associated with high stability during 100h of reaction under operative conditions (start-up and shut-down cycles), have been obtained.
