Fine-particle, sinter-active yttria has been prepared by combustion of a redox compound, Y(N2H3COO)3·3H2O and mixtures of Y(N2H3COO)3·3H2O�NH4NO3 or NH4ClO4 as well as yttrium nitrate and hydrazine-based fuels. The fineparticle nature of the combustion-derived yttria has been investigated using powder density, particle size and BET surface area measurements. The uniaxially, cold-pressed fine-particle yttria when sintered at 1450�1500 °C achieved 98% theoretical density and showed a fine-grain (1�2 µm) microstructure.

A concise total synthesis of 11-O-methyldebenzoyltashironin is reported in which oxidative dearomatization-IMDA-RCM triad constitutes the key ring forming steps, while an unorthodox DIBAL-H mediated stereo- and regioselective reductive epoxide openings and implementation of the vinyl bromide-carbonyl equivalency concept were pivotal to the success of this endeavor. A new strategy for the construction of A-ring aromatic steroids which resulted in the formal total synthesis of estrone is described. Thus reaction of the adduct (9), obtained from 1-methoxy-4-methylcyclohexa-1,4-diene and acrolein, with 3-(m-methoxyphenyl)propylmagnesium bromide followed by oxidation afforded the bicyclo[2.2.2]octene derivative (14). Acid-catalysed rearrangement of (14) followed by an intramolecular Michael addition resulted in the cis tetraenone (18) which was dehydrogenated with palladium chloride to the pentaenone (22). Li/NH3 reduction of (22) gave 3-methoxy-D-homoestra-1,3,5(10)-trien-16-one (31) which has been converted into the methyl ether (37) of marrianolic acid, and its methyl ester (38).

The first stereoselective total synthesis of the novel sesquiterpenes 1 and 2 is described. The preparation of the key intermediate 27 involved a rearrangement of a bicyclo[3.2.1] octane framework to an isomeric bicyclo[3.2.1]octane skeleton via a bicyclo[2.2.2]octane derivative.

The first total synthesis of (±)-cyclolaurene (Image ) and (±)-epicyclolaurene (Image ), and a new route to (±)-?-cuparenone (Image ) are reported. Thus, orthoester Claisen rearrangement of the cinnamyl alcohol Image furnished the eneester Image . Anhydrous CuSO, catalysed intramolecular cyclopropanation of the diazoketone derived from the ene-acid Image , generated a diastereoisomeric mixture of cyclopropyl ketone Image . The Huang-Minlon reduction of the ketones Image and Image furnished the cyclolaurene (Image ) and epicyclolaurene (Image ), whereas regiospecific ring cleavage using lithium in liquid ammonia furnished the ?-cuparenone (Image ).

We performed high resolution spectroscopy of the solar corona during the total solar eclipse of 22 July 2009 in two emission lines: the green line at 5303 due to Fe xiv and the red line at 6374 due to Fe x, simultaneously from Anji (latitude 30A degrees 28.1' N; longitude 119A degrees 35.4' E; elevation 890 m), China. A two-mirror coelostat with 100 cm focal length lens produced a 9.2 mm image of the Sun. The spectrograph using 140 cm focal length lens in Littrow mode and a grating with 600 lines per millimeter blazed at 2 mu m provided a dispersion of 30 m and 43 m per pixel in the fourth order around the green line and third order around the red line, respectively. Two Peltier cooled 1k x 1k CCD cameras, with a pixel size of 13 mu m square and 14-bit readout at 10 MHz operated in frame transfer mode, were used to obtain the time sequence spectra in two emission lines simultaneously. The duration of totality was 341 s, but we could get spectra for 270 s after a trial exposure at an interval of 5 s. We report here on the detection of intensity, velocity, and line width oscillations with periodicity in the range of 25 -50 s. These oscillations can be interpreted in terms of the presence of fast magnetoacoustic waves or torsional Alfv,n waves. The intensity ratios of green to red emission lines indicate the temperature of the corona to be 1.65 MK in the equatorial region and 1.40 MK in the polar region, relatively higher than the expected temperature during the low activity period. The width variation of the emission lines in different coronal structures suggests different physical conditions in different structures.

Nanostructured ceria-zirconia solid solutions (Ce1 − xZrxO2, X = 0 to 0.9) have been synthesized by a single step solution combustion process using cerous nitrate, zirconyl nitrate and oxalyl dihydrazide (ODH) / carbohydrazide (CH). The as-synthesized powders show extensive XRD line broadening and the crystallite sizes calculated from the XRD line broadening are in the nanometer range (6–11 nm). The combustion derived ceria zirconia solid solutions have high surface area in the range of 36–120 m2/g. Calcination of Ce1 −xZrxO2 at 1350 °C showed three distinct solid solution regions: single phase cubic (x ≤ 0.2), biphasic cubic-tetragonal (0.2 < x Image .8) and tetragonal (x > 0.8). When x ≥ 0.9, the metastable tetragonal phase formed transforms to monoclinic phase on cooling after calcination above 1100 °C. The homogeneity of Ce1 − xZrxO2 has been confirmed by EDAX analysis. The Temperature Programmed Reduction (TPR) measurement of Ce0.5Zr0.5O2 was carried out with H2 and the TPR profile showed two water formation peaks corresponding to the utilization of surface and bulk oxygen.

Total tRNAs isolated from chloroplasts and etioplasts of cucumber cotyledons were compared with respect to amino acid acceptance, isoacceptor distribution and extent of modification. Aminoacylation of the tRNAs with nine different amino acids studied indicated that the relative acceptor activities of chloroplast total tRNAs for four amino acids are significantly higher than etioplast total tRNAs. Two dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) of chloroplast total tRNAs separated at least 32 spots, while approximately 41 spots were resolved from etioplast total tRNAs. Comparison of the reversed-phase chromatography (RPC-5) profiles of chloroplast and etioplast leucyl-, lysyl-, phenylalanyl-, and valyl-tRNA species showed no qualitative differences in the elution profiles. However, leucyl-, lysyl- and valyl-tRNA species showed quantitative differences in the relative amounts of the isoaccepting species present in chloroplasts and etioplasts. The analysis of modified nucleotides of total tRNAs from the two plastid types indicated that total tRNA from etioplasts was undermodified with respect to ribothymidine, isopentenyladenosine/hydroxy-isopentenyladenosine, 1-methylguanosine and 2-o-methylguanosine. This indicates that illumination may cause de novo synthesis of chloroplast tRNA-modifying enzymes encoded for by nuclear genes leading to the formation of highly modified tRNAs in chloroplasts. Based on these results, we speculate that the observed decrease in levels of aminoacylation, variations in the relative amounts of certain isoacceptors, and differences in the electrophoretic mobilities of some extra tRNA spots in the etioplast total tRNAs as compared to chloroplast total tRNAs could be due to some partially undermodified etioplast tRNAs. Taken together, the data suggested that the light-induced transformation of etioplasts into chloroplasts is accompanied by increases in the relative levels of some functional chloroplast tRNAs by post transcriptional nucleotide modifications.

A radical cyclization based methodology has been applied for the formal total synthesis of (+/-)-enterolactone (1), the first lignan isolated from human source. Bromoacetalization reaction of the cinnamyl alcohols 7 and 13 using ethyl vinyl ether and NBS, generated the bromoacetals 8 and 15. The 5-exo-trig radical cyclization reaction of the bromoacetals 8 and 15 with in situ generated catalytic tri-a-butyltin hydride and AIBN furnished a 3 : 2 diastereomeric mixture of the cyclic acetals 9 and 16. Sonochemically accelerated Jones oxidation of the cyclic acetals 9 and 16 yielded the gamma-butyrolactones 10 and 12 completing the formal total synthesis of (+/-)-enterolactone. Alternatively radical cyclization of the bromoacetate 17 furnished a 1 : 2 mixture of the lactone 10 and the reduced product 18.

The enantioselective synthesis of the natural products cladospolide B, cladospolide C, and iso-cladospolide B has been accomplished from tartaric acid. Key reactions in the synthetic sequence include the elaboration of a gamma-hydroxy amide derived from tartaric acid via alkene cross metathesis, Yamaguchi lactonization, and ring closing metathesis. Porous, large surface area, metastable zirconias, are of importance to catalytic, electrochemical, biological, and thermal insulation applications. Combustion synthesis is a very commonly used method for producing such zirconias. However, its rapid nature makes control difficult. A simple modification has been made to traditional solution combustion synthesis to address this problem. It involves the addition of starch to yield a starting mixture with a ``dough-like'' consistency. Just 5 wt% starch is seen to significantly alter the combustion characteristics of the ``dough.'' In particular, it helps to achieve better control over reaction zone temperature that is significantly lower than the one calculated by the adiabatic approximation typically used in self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The effect of such control is demonstrated by the ability to tune dough composition to yield zirconias with different phase compositions from the relatively elusive ``amorphous'' to monoclinic (> 30 nm grain size) and tetragonal pure zirconia (< 30 nm grain size). The nature of this amorphous phase has been investigated using infrared spectroscopy. Starch content also helps tailor porosity in the final product. Zirconias with an average pore size of about 50 mu m and specific surface area as large as 110 m2/g have been obtained.

An efficient strategy for the construction of the spiro[4,5]decane and eremane systems is described which involves an acid-catalysed rearrangement of an endo alcohol, followed by an oxidative cleavage resulting in the generation of a spiro-system, as the key step, This methodology is extended to the total synthesis of (+/-)-hinesol and (+/-)-10-epi-hinesol 2.
