The gut contents and fatty acid composition of 49 fish belonging to five Antarctic demersal families (Nototheniidae, Macrouridae, Channichtyidae, Bathydraconidae and Artedidraconidae) sampled at two stations at the Southern Ocean shelf and deep sea (600 and 2150 m) were analysed in order to identify their main food resource by linking trophic biomarkers with the dietary items found in the fish guts. Main food items of most fish analysed were amphipod crustaceans (e.g. in 63% of Trematomus bernachii guts) and polychaetes (e.g. in 80% of Bathydraco sp. guts), but other food items including fish, other crustaceans and gastropods were also ingested. The most prominent fatty acids found were 20:5(n-3), 16:0, 22:6(n-3) and 18:1(n-9). The results of gut content and fatty acid analyses indicate that all fish except the Channichthyidae share similar food resources irrespective of their depth distribution, i.e. benthic amphipods and polychaetes. A difference of the dietary spectrum can be observed with ontogenetic phases rather than between species, as high values of typical calanoid copepod marker fatty acids as 22:1(n-11) indicate that younger (smaller) specimens include more zooplankton in their diet.

At the end of the Leg 73 cruise, at Site 520, a thick upper Miocene facies of laminated diatomite was discovered. It was hypothesized that the sediment was derived from nutrient-rich waters in a young Cenozoic anoxic basin in the open Atlantic Ocean near the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Clay mineralogy and geotechnical properties of Tarras clay, basin clays and tills from some parts of Schleswig-Holstein: Tarras clay of lower Eocene age, Quaternary till containing various admixtures of Tarras clay as well as basin clay and varve-clay from Schleswig-Holstein were investigated. Grain size distribution and soil mechanic characteristics were determined, which indicated different geotechnical properties for each sediment type.

A pollen profile from the highest known peatbog in the Alps is presented. The peatbog started to grow about 8000 years ago and over the last 5000 years. The influence of man on the vegetation is documented. Before the beginning of the bronze age pasturing started.

Sediments from Sites 1057 and 1061 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 172 on the Blake Outer Ridge exhibit nearly isotropic magnetic susceptibility. Resolving the degree of anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility proved difficult in many samples because of the generally weak magnetic susceptibility of the sediments relative to the noise level of the susceptibility meters used. Lineation varies from 1.0 to 1.013 and foliation varies from 1.0 to 1.08 in the samples that pass rejection criteria. In general the foliation is better resolved than the lineation, particularly at Site 1061, where the foliation exhibits long-term trends that mimic the mean susceptibility. The changes in the foliation at this site are likely the result of changes in the magnetic mineralogy of the sediment. The poorly developed or absent magnetic fabric in the sediments overall can be attributed to high carbonate concentrations and to a circulation regime that was diffuse or with currents too weak to effectively align magnetic particles.
