Wonder Down Under: Australian sci-fi 1948-52

Moral guardians, industry protectionists and concerned citizens (each with their own political agendas) had, or many years, lobbied various Ministers of Customs to regulate the offensive material which flooded the local market-the war effectively opened a protectionist climate in which the local publishing industry nourished (Johnson-Woods Pulp Friction). Though westerns dominated at first, science fiction (i.e., futuristic stories, alternative histories, space exploration, time-travel past and future ) soon followed. Within the decaying and yellowed pages, contemporary readers have a glimpse into the culture of the 1950s and, amusing though some of the predictions are, the cultural and social critic gains some understanding of the anxieties and desires of post-World War II Australia.

A RELIGI��O NO CONFLITO ENTRE ISRAEL E PALESTINA NO CONTEXTO DA CRIA����O DO ESTADO JUDAICO: ASPECTOS HIST��RICOS (1896-1948)

O presente trabalho analisa o papel da religi��o no conflito entre Israel e Palestina, principalmente no contexto da implanta����o do Estado de Israel, em 1948. A an��lise toma como delimita����o hist��rica do conflito o per��odo de 1896 a 1948, quando ocorre a migra����o das primeiras levas de judeus para os territ��rios palestinos. A pergunta inicial �� sobre como judeus e mu��ulmanos se relacionavam nos primeiros anos de imigra����o at�� a cria����o do Estado de Israel. O problema principal a ser esclarecido �� como a constru����o cultural ocidental em rela����o aos palestinos interferiu no conflito, principalmente no que tange �� tomada da terra e �� constru����o de um novo pa��s dentro de um j�� existente, socialmente, religiosamente e culturalmente. Finalmente a pesquisa pergunta pela repercuss��o do conflito entre israelenses e palestinos no campo religioso protestante, principalmente entre grupos conservadores e fundamentalistas deste ramo do cristianismo. A pesquisa �� totalmente bibliogr��fica e toma como refer��ncia as teorias p��s-coloniais para debater a hist��ria do territ��rio, no que se refere aos aspectos religiosos do conflito.

Constructing communism in the Romanian People's Republic. Orthodoxy and state, 1948 - 49

This article analyses the ambiguous and contradictory relationship between the Orthodox Church and the communist regime during the first two years of the Romanian People's Republic. The installation of communism and the process of Stalinisation led to an unprecedented control of the church. The church was actively employed in propaganda and the regime imposed its own people in the hierarchy. On the one hand, Romanian communists followed the Soviet model regarding the place of the church in the communist state while, on the other hand, the church hierarchy adapted to the new political system by creating a theory of 'social apostolate'. Lacking popular support, the communists used the church as an instrument through which they could acquire the political support of the masses. The church thus enjoyed a favoured position in society mainly because the communists employed it in their ideological expansionism and confrontation with the West.

A review of Taiwan's technological five-year junior college mechanical engineering curriculum development: 1948 to 1994

Taiwan's technological five-year junior college (TFYJC) was founded in 1948 to train technicians to meet the demand coming from national construction. Site level professionals never were trained in curriculum development as this was under strict national control. The purpose of this study is to present an accurate narrative of Taiwan's TFYJC mechanical engineering curriculum development history in order to display the focus, rationale, and influencing forces of the evolving curriculum. This study employed historical research methodology and used document analysis as the primary approach.^ This analysis revealed that the target FYJC curriculum was manufacturing-oriented. The range of government control shifted from little, to full, then to partial control of the curriculum, from autonomy to uniformity then to partial autonomy. The intention of the target curriculum development was always to advance domestic economic development. Voices from the academia and government also influenced curriculum development decisions. Currently, the government has instituted a shift in focus and content causing individual institutions to develop curriculum responses addressing the challenge of advancing Taiwan's position in a global economy.^ Considering the shift in policy and practice, individual institutions intending to design curriculum are advised to implement empirical needs assessments of students, graduates, and employers and to engage in critical studies of emerging resources in order to provide effective in service training. To accomplish this end, TFYJC faculty and administration need training in curriculum theory and practice and evaluation. ^

A Land That Has Yet to Heal: The Burmese Civil War (1948 ��� present)

Since its independence from Great Britain in 1948, the state of Burma has been at war with itself. Ethnic and religious tension fuel the conflict and has led to territorial disputes while no resolution to this strife is expected under a fragile and corrupt central government. Additionally, proxy wars have delayed any peaceful negotiations. The combinations of failing social welfare programs and prolonged peace talks have led many Burmese people join the military as soldiers in either the Burmese military or any one of the numerous ethnic paramilitary groups in the country. Human rights violations are common in Burma, including rape, pillaging, and ethnic cleansing. Essentially, Burma has had the longest ongoing civil war due to combination of grievances, many of which predate the 21st century.

Do trabalho de Deus... Adeus ao trabalho? Ontologia, precariza����o, controle do trabalho e fetichismo em A caverna de Jos�� Saramago

The aim of this study is to undertake a theoretical analysis of the literary and sociological Cave, Jose Saramago, having as main theme the precariousness of work and control, followed by some key developments. Anchored in the sociology of work and endorsed by the sociology of literature methodologically by Antonio Candido, and guided by the narrative Saramago in the cave, seeking to understand the work activity as central and essential to the production and reproduction of material life. It discusses the precariousness of work, as well as the historical forms of ownership and control of labor activity. Scales the impact of large corporations that control and the conflict between mechanized and manual labor in the process, questioning the nefarious effects of the restructuring of the productive working class, especially on small businesses and craft work. It also addresses the rise of a category gestorial in the process of labor control throughout history Finally, invoking the metaphor of Plato\'s cave in this work Saramago, explores how labor control by large corporations causes the estrangement in all dimensions of life, establishing relationships between fetishism, consumer relations and sociability.

"Paseo por una guerra antigua" (Juan Antonio Bardem, 1948-49): una contramemoria de la Guerra Civil

Este art��culo pretende demostrar en qu�� medida Paseo por una guerra antigua (1948-1949), la pr��ctica de segundo curso del Instituto de Investigaciones y Experiencias Cinematogr��ficas (IIEC) en la que Juan Antonio Bardem rueda a un joven mutilado caminando por las ruinas de la Ciudad Universitaria de Madrid, constituye un intento pionero de desmontar los relatos oficiales de la Guerra Civil Espa��ola y rescatar la memoria de los vencidos. Filmar las ruinas del campus madrile��o en aquellos a��os era un acto sub��versivo, puesto que el R��gimen hab��a emprendido su reconstrucci��n para borrar las huellas del Madrid republicano y de la Guerra Civil, resignificando por completo el recinto universitario. Por tanto, en Paseo por una guerra antigua, Bardem intenta reapropiarse de un espacio que en la ��poca iba imponi��ndose como uno de los ���lugares de memoria��� del franquismo. Esta pel��cula se vale de la funci��n documental del cine para inmortalizar unas ruinas que simbolizan la Rep��blica y la guerra, para preservarlas de la muerte simb��lica que representa su reconstrucci��n. Mostrar esas ruinas en 1948-1949 equivale a ���materializar��� el pasado, a traerlo al presente de la posguerra, en un proceso que recuerda a los planteamientos sobre la Historia de Walter Benjamin, para proponer una visi��n alternativa de la contienda. Se trata de una visi��n te��ida de una memoria ��ntima, ya que la pel��cula es un paseo no solo por las ruinas sino tambi��n por los recuerdos de este joven mutilado. En suma, Bardem propone una contramemoria de la Guerra Civil.
