Optimizing the Performance Evaluation Process for Non-Academic Staff

If conducted poorly and without support from all employee levels, performance management programs at institutions may devolve into annual evaluations that represent a staff burden rather than an ongoing career development opportunity. This brief analyzes the key components of successful performance evaluation systems for non-academic staff, incorporating insights from employers outside of the higher education sector as well. It examines the importance of midyear check-in meetings; employee goal-setting; simplified rating scales on evaluation forms; and core staff competencies that reflect institutional priorities. It also describes how institutions communicate modifications to the evaluation system and offers recommendations for the implementation of process change.

Currículo por tema como alternativa ao curriculo dos cursos de graduação em administração

o presente texto trata de um estudo de campo sobre Currículo de Graduação em Administração, realizado em três etapas. A primeira delas foi direcionada para saber como estava o exercício da profissão de administrador, como se constituíam os elementos integrantes da formação acadêmica do público-alvo, qual a avaliação que os entrevistados faziam dos cursos e que propostas apresentavam para o currículo. A segunda fase respondeu questões sobre a interdisciplinaridadade das ciências sociais, as qualidades imprescindíveis ao administrador e as informações importantes para a formação de idéias visando a propor um formato curricular alternativo ao Currículo Tradicional. A última fase destinou-se, exclusivamente, a pesquisar a possibilidade de introdução efetiva de opções curriculares, destacando-se a proposta do Currículo por Tema, onde apareceram as interseções interdisciplinares feitas, em sentido vertical, pelos módulos, e as interseções intermodulares realizadas, em sentido horizontal, pelas disciplinas. Acredita-se que tais interseções ajudariam os estudantes na construção do seu propno conhecimento, habituando-os a tirar ilações, a fazer comparações, a chegar a conclusões, a analisar os fatos criticamente e a ter visão de conjunto dos fenômenos. Elas poderiam, ainda, auxiliá-los na compreensão global dos problemas ligados ao ambiente em que vivem.

Sacredness of the constitutional text and interpretative heresy: the Brazilian Supreme Court decision on same-sex civil unions

The paper provides a close lecture of the arguments and methods of legal construction, employed in the extensive individual opinions written by the Justices of the Brazilian Supreme Court in the case which authorized the same sex civil union. After tracing an outline of the legal problem and his possible solutions, we analyze the individual opinions, showing their methodological syncretism, the use of legal methods and arguments in a contradictory way as well the deficiencies in the reasoning. The Justices use legal arguments, but do not meet the requirements of rationality in the decision-making. We have a rhetorical attempt that aims to satisfy the public opinion than to offer a comprehensive and coherent solution according the normative elements of the Brazilian Federal Constitution of 1988.

Die vorliegende Dissertation setzt sich mit dem Phänomen ›Text im Rahmen der Neuen Medien‹ auseinander, indem sie theoretisch und empirisch der in der einschlägigen Forschung aufgeworfenen (und kontrovers diskutierten) Frage nachgeht, ob die Sprache in den Textsorten der neuen Kommunikationsformen als neue Schriftlichkeit bzw. schriftliche Mündlichkeit zu verstehen sei. Dabei konzentriert sie sich exemplarisch auf die Analyse eigens für diesen Zweck erstellter aktueller Textkorpora der Kommunikationsformen E-Mail und Brief und untersucht sie unter den Gesichtspunkten Mündlichkeit / Schriftlichkeit bzw. Nähe / Distanz. ›Kapitel 1‹ umreißt den Forschungsstand zum Thema ›Text und Textsorte‹ sowohl in der Textlinguistik als auch in aktuellen Studien zur Sprache in den Neuen Medien. ›Kapitel 2‹ ist dem kritischen Referat verschiedener bekannter Modelle gewidmet, die sich mit dem Aspekt der Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit bzw. Nähe und Distanz beschäftigen (Hugo Stegers Freiburger Gruppe, Ludwig Söll, Koch/Oesterreicher und Ágel/Hennig) und eine Verortung von Textsorten im Kontinuum Nähe und Distanz vornehmen (Koch/Oesterreicher und Ágel/Hennig).›Kapitel 3‹ schlägt Korrekturen und Ergänzungen betreffend Punktgebung, Modellglossar und Makroanalyse im Modell von Ágel/Hennig vor, das in dieser Arbeit den Analysen der Nähesprachlichkeit in Privatbriefen und privaten E-Mails zugrunde liegt. ›Kapitel 4‹ setzt sich mit Aspekten der beiden Textkorpora auseinander, auf die sich diese Arbeit stützt, und beschreibt und erläutert den Fragebogen, der im Rahmen dieser Arbeit erstellt und Probanden zur Beantwortung vorgelegt wurde. ›Kapitel 5‹ nimmt einen ausführlichen Vergleich der Textsorten ›Privatbrief und private E-Mail‹ vor und beleuchtet abrissartig die Geschichte beider Kommunikationsformen, wobei es sich gleichzeitig auch kritisch mit den in der Forschung in solchen Vergleichsfragen vertretenen Positionen auseinander setzt. ›Kapitel 6‹ interpretiert die Ergebnisse der in der Arbeit durchgeführten Näheanalysen und zieht daraus die Schlussfolgerungen.

Time reduction in a forced-convection thermal process using simplified transient analysis

This study investigates the utilisation of a simplified model in the transient analysis of a thermal cooling process. In such process the external thermal resistance between the surface and the surroundings is high compared to the system internal thermal resistance, so that the first controls the heat transfer process. In this case the Biot number is lower than 0.1. Aluminium reels were utilised, which, with proper internal instrumentation, furnished experimental results for the thermal cooling process. Based on experimental data, a simplified model for the determination of the process film coefficient was used. Subsequently, experimental and theoretical results were compared. The change of the airflow direction was also investigated for the cooling process, aiming at process time optimisation. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd.

Estas diretrizes constituem uma ferramenta atualizada e abrangente para auxiliar o profissional de saúde na abordagem do tabagista, recomendando atitudes baseadas em evidências clínicas como a melhor forma de conduzir cada caso. de forma reduzida e mais objetiva possível, o texto final foi agrupado em dois grandes itens: Avaliação e Tratamento. Os dois itens apresentam comentários e níveis de recomendação das referências utilizadas, bem como algumas propostas de abordagem, como por exemplo, redução de danos, em situações específicas ainda pouco exploradas, como recaídas, tabagismo passivo, tabagismo na categoria médica e uso de tabaco em ambientes específicos.

Wax Teeth and Metallic Superstructure Trials at the Same Session: Simplified Technique for Implant-Supported Prosthesis

This clinical report describes a method to reduce the number of clinical sessions for the rehabilitation of implant-supported fixed dentures through a simplified and versatile procedure indicated mainly for immediate loading. According to this method, the immediate implant-supported fixed dentures for edentulous patients can be safely fabricated within 2 days. In this technique, the teeth in the wax are prepared on a base of light-polymerized resin, and both wax teeth and metallic superstructure trials are accomplished at the same session.

Potential symmetries and new solutions of a simplified model for reacting mixtures

In this paper, we investigate potential symmetries of a simplified model for reacting mixtures. We find new similarity reductions and wider class of solutions through this approach. Further, we explore an invertible mapping which linearizes the reacting mixture model.

Fermi acceleration on the annular billiard: a simplified version

A simplified version of a time-dependent annular billiard is studied. The dynamics is described using nonlinear maps and we consider two different configurations for the billiard, namely (i) concentric and (ii) eccentric cases. For the concentric case and for a null angular momentum, we confirm that the results for the Fermi-Ulam model are recovered and the particle does not experience the phenomenon of Fermi acceleration. However, on the eccentric case the particle demonstrates unlimited energy gain and Fermi acceleration is therefore observed.

Design of a simplified neuro-fuzzy system based on CMAC Architectures

This work presents the design of a fuzzy controller with simplified architecture that use an artificial neural network working as the aggregation operator for several active fuzzy rules. The simplified architecture of the fuzzy controller is used to minimize the time processing used in the closed loop system operation, the basic procedures of fuzzification are simplified to maximum while all the inference procedures are computed in a private way. As consequence, this simplified architecture allows a fast and easy configuration of the simplified fuzzy controller. The structuring of the fuzzy rules that define the control actions is previously computed using an artificial neural network based on CMAC Cerebellar Model Articulation Controller. The operational limits are standardized and all the control actions are previously calculated and stored in memory. For applications, results and conclusions several configurations of this fuzzy controller are considered.

Simplified multiresidue method for the determination of organophosphorus insecticides in olive oil

A simple and rapid method for the determination of 13 organophosphorus insecticides and their metabolites in olive oil by GC is described. The pesticide was extracted from oil with acetonitrile and no cleanup was needed. GC-nitrogen-phosphorus detection response factors of pesticides were affected by solvents and coextractive substances. Pesticides in hexane showed on average higher response factors. Standards were prepared in the residue-free oil extract solubilized in hexane to handle effects of matrix and solvent. The low amount of coextractive substances does not decrease the column efficiency, even after a few hundred analyses. Recovery at three fortification levels (ca. 0.1, 1.0 and 3.0 mg/kg) ranged from 74 to 118%, With coefficients of variation ranging from 1 to 16.

Simplified architecture of a neurofuzzy controller applied on industrial systems for fluid flow control

This work presents a simplified architecture of a neurofuzzy controller for general purpose applications that tries to minimize the processing used in the several stages of hazy modeling of systems. The basic procedures of fuzzification and defuzzification are simplified to the maximum while the inference procedures are computed in a private way. The simplified architecture allows a fast and easy configuration of the neurofuzzy controller and the structuring rules that define the control actions is automatic. Th controller's Limits and performance are standardized and the control actions are previously calculated. For application, the industrial systems of fluid flow control will be considered.
