The effect of Ag additions on the reverse martensitic transformation in the Cu-10 mass% Al alloy was studied using differential thermal analysis (DTA), optical (OM) and scanning electron microscopies (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry. The results indicated that Ag additions to the Cu-10 mass% Al alloy shift the equilibrium concentration to higher Al contents, allow to obtain both beta(1)' and beta' martensitic phases in equilibrium and that Ag precipitation is a process associated with the perlitic phase formation.

The reverse martensitic transformation in the Cu-10 wt%Al-6 wt%Ag alloy was studied by classical differential thermal analysis (IDTA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicated that the presence of Ag in the Cu-10%Al alloy is responsible for the separation of the competitive reactions that occur during the reverse martensitic transformation and is also associated to an increase in the disordering degree at high temperatures, when compared with alloys without Ag addition. Supported ceramic membranes have been produced by the sol-casting procedure from aqueous colloidal suspensions prepared by the sol-gel route. Coatings on a tubular alumina support have been successfully performed leading to crack free layers. Samples have been sintered at 400, 500 and 600 degreesC, and the effect of heating treatment on the nanostructure and on the ultrafiltration properties are analyzed. The characterization has been done by high resolution scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, water permeation and cut-off determination using polyethylene glycol standard solutions. The micrographs have revealed that grains and pore size increase with the temperature, whereas their shape remains invariant. This results is in agreements with N-2 adsorption-desorption analyses, which have revealed that the mean pore size diameter increases from 4 to 10 nm as the sintering temperature increases from 400 to 600 degreesC, while the total porosity remains constant. Furthermore, the tortuosity, calculated from water permeability, is essentially invariant with the sintering temperatures. The membranes cut-off, determined with a retention rate equal to 95%, are 3500, 6500 and 9000 g . mol(-1) for 400, 500 and 600 degreesC, respectively, showing that the permeation properties of SnO2 ultrafiltration membranes can easily be controlled by sintering condition.

The eutectoid transformation may be defined as a solid-state diffusion-controlled decomposition process of a high-temperature phase into a two-phase lamellar aggregate behind a migrating boundary on cooling below the eutectoid temperature. In substitutional solid solutions, the eutectoid reaction involves diffusion of the solute atoms either through the matrix or along the boundaries or ledges. The effect of Ag on the non-isothermal kinetics of the reverse eutectoid reaction in the Cu-9 mass%Al, Cu-10 mass%Al, and Cu-11 mass%Al alloys were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The activation energy for this reaction was obtained using the Kissinger and Ozawa methods. The results indicated that Ag additions to Cu-Al alloys interfere on the reverse eutectoid reaction, increasing the activation energy values for the Cu-9 mass%Al and Cu-10 mass%Al alloys and decreasing these values for the Cu-11 mass%Al alloy for additions up to 6 mass%Ag. The changes in the activation energy were attributed to changes in the reaction solute and in Ag solubility due to the increase in Al content.

Hydrated bacterial cellulose (BC) membranes obtained from cultures of Acetobacter xylinum were used in the preparation of silver nanoparticles containing cellulose membranes. In situ preparation of Ag nanoparticles was achieved from the hydrolytic decomposition of silver triethanolamine (TEA) complexes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns both lead to the observation of spherical metallic silver particles with mean diameter of 8 nm well adsorbed onto the BC fibriles. The objective of the present study was to standardize the analysis of zinc binding on human red blood cell (RBC) membranes in 20 normal adults. The displacement studies revealed that at the maximal stable zinc concentration tested (600 muM), 57% (mean) of the bound Zn-65 was displaced and to displace half maximal Zn-65, the stable zinc concentration was 300 muM. Scatchard plots revealed two classes of binding sites for zinc on RBC membranes: one with higher affinity, Kd = 1.20 x 10(-5) M (site I), and the other with lower affinity, Kd = 2.77 x 10(-4) M (site II). Binding sites occupancy was 97% means and 58.5% means for sites I and 11, respectively. The displacement was affected by temperature, membrane protein concentration, freezing, thawing, and dialysis. Other metal cations, including Co++, Fe++, and Mn++, had very little effect on Zn-65 displacement, in contrast copper displaced Zn-65 from its binding sites on RBC membranes. Zinc binding to RBC membranes was rapid and readily reversible in a dynamic equilibrium with its binding sites. It is anticipated that this method will be applicable to studies of a wide variety of diseases specifically related to zinc metabolism in humans as well as in animals. (C) 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

The work describes the biocompatibility and biodegradation studies of anionic collagen membranes casted form collagen gels collagen, that were selective hydrolyzed at the carboxyamide groups, as a function of the degree of cross-links induced by glutaraldehyde. Independently from the degree of cross-links, all membranes studied were characterized by a similar inflammatory response, inversely dependent on glutaraldehyde reaction time, that decreased from the time of the implant. Cell alterations, mineralization or contact necrosis were not observed in any of the membranes studied. Rates for membrane tissue biodegradation were directly related to glutaraldehyde reaction time, and ranged from 30 to periods longer than 60 days, associated with good biocompatibility. Although other properties must be considered, their use in the treatment of periodontal diseases, the biological behavior observed with the 8 h GA cross-linked membrane suggests that, anionic collagen membrane described in this work may be of potential use, not only in association with guided tissue regeneration technique for periodontal tissue reconstruction, but also in other collagen biomaterial applications where controlled biodegradability is required. Objective: the proposal was to study the presence of immunoglobulin A (IgA) in the chorioamniotic membrane of healthy postpartum women with premature rupture of the chorioamniotic membrane (FROM). Method: A single radial immunodiffusion technique was used to quantify the IgA in the chorioamniotic membrane tissues. Results: the level of IgA was approximately 10 times higher in patients whose membranes had been ruptured for > 10 h (24.58 mg/dl). These results were compared with those of a previously published study where the mean of amount of IgA was 2.52 mg/dl in membranes of patients with rupture < 10 h. Our results show that IgA began to rise after 10-15 h following rupture. Conclusion: Although more studies need to be performed our data indicate that the increasing IgA in our patients after 10 h of latency probably represents the beginning of an ascending colonization of bacteria which could be the source of future infection.

A rapid, sensitive and reliable reverse-phase HPLC method was used for the quantitative determination of the anti-fungal and insecticide amides, dihydropiplartine (1), piplartine (2), Delta(alpha,beta)-dihydropiperine (3) and pellitorine (4) in plants in natura, in plantlets in vitro and ex vitro, and in callus of Piper tuberculatum. Well-resolved peaks were obtained with good detection response and linearity in the range of 15.0-3000 mug/mL. The plants in natura contained compounds 1-4, the plantlets ex vitro and in vitro accumulated compounds 1-2 and 1-4, respectively, while only amide 4 was found in callus.
