Release of uranium from Na-autunite, an artificial mineral created as a result of polyphosphate injection in the subsurface at the DOE Hanford Site, takes place during slow dissolution of the mineral structure. Stability information of the uranyl-phosphate phases is limited to conditions involving pH, temperature, and a few aqueous organic materials. The carbonate ion, which creates very strong complexes with uranium, is the predominant ion in the groundwater composition. The polyphosphate technology with the formation of autunite was identified as the most feasible remediation strategy to sequester uranium in contaminated groundwater and soil in situ. The objectives of the experimental work were (i) to quantify the effect of bicarbonate on the stability of synthetic sodium meta-autunite created as a result of uranium stabilization through polyphosphate injection, (ii) calculate the kinetic rate law parameters of the uranium release from Na-autunite during dissolution, and (iii) to compare the process parameters with those obtained for natural calcium meta-autunite. Experiments were conducted using SPTF apparatus, which consists of syringe pumps for controlling flow rate, Teflon reactors and a heating/cooling system. 0.25 grams of synthetic Na-autunite was placed in the reactor and buffer solutions with varying bicarbonate concentrations (0.0005 to 0.003 M) at different pH (6 - 11) were pumped through the reactors. Experiments were conducted at four different temperatures in the range of 5 - 60oC. It was concluded that the rate of release of uranium from synthetic Na-autunite is directly correlated to the bicarbonate concentration. The rate of release of uranium increased from 1.90 x 10-12 at pH 6 to 2.64 x 10-10 (mol m-2 s-1) at pH 11 at 23oC over the bicarbonate concentration range tested. The activation energy values were invariant with the change in the bicarbonate concentration; however, pH is shown to influence the activation energy values. Uranyl hydroxides and uranyl carbonates complexes helped accelerate the dissolution of autunite mineral.

The presence of inhibitory substances in biological forensic samples has, and continues to affect the quality of the data generated following DNA typing processes. Although the chemistries used during the procedures have been enhanced to mitigate the effects of these deleterious compounds, some challenges remain. Inhibitors can be components of the samples, the substrate where samples were deposited or chemical(s) associated to the DNA purification step. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the extraction processes and their ability to handle the various types of inhibitory substances can help define the best analytical processing for any given sample. A series of experiments were conducted to establish the inhibition tolerance of quantification and amplification kits using common inhibitory substances in order to determine if current laboratory practices are optimal for identifying potential problems associated with inhibition. DART mass spectrometry was used to determine the amount of inhibitor carryover after sample purification, its correlation to the initial inhibitor input in the sample and the overall effect in the results. Finally, a novel alternative at gathering investigative leads from samples that would otherwise be ineffective for DNA typing due to the large amounts of inhibitory substances and/or environmental degradation was tested. This included generating data associated with microbial peak signatures to identify locations of clandestine human graves. Results demonstrate that the current methods for assessing inhibition are not necessarily accurate, as samples that appear inhibited in the quantification process can yield full DNA profiles, while those that do not indicate inhibition may suffer from lowered amplification efficiency or PCR artifacts. The extraction methods tested were able to remove >90% of the inhibitors from all samples with the exception of phenol, which was present in variable amounts whenever the organic extraction approach was utilized. Although the results attained suggested that most inhibitors produce minimal effect on downstream applications, analysts should practice caution when selecting the best extraction method for particular samples, as casework DNA samples are often present in small quantities and can contain an overwhelming amount of inhibitory substances.^

This research was conducted to study the use of radiation in water treatment as an alternative to chlorination which has caused health concerns due to the formation of harmful disinfection by-products. Groundwater solutions from the Biscayne aquifer were radiated with Cobalt-60 gamma radiation and studied for changes in dissolved organic carbon (DOC), UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV254), fluorescence and trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP). Molecular fractionations were conducted by ultrafiltration. Effect of the combination of radiation/peroxide was studied for DOC and UV254. Radiation showed significant removal in DOC and THMFP. Similar results were seen in the fluorescence and UV absorbance experiments. Radiation/peroxide did not improve the DOC removal. Radiation of the groundwater samples broke the larger molecular weight fractions in to smaller fractions.

Kiwi fruit is a highly nutritional fruit due to the high level of vitamin C and its strong antioxidant capacity due to a wide number of phytonutrients including carotenoids, lutein, phenolics, flavonoids and chlorophyll [1]. Drying consists of a complex process in which simultaneous heat and mass transfer occur. Several alterations occur during the drying of foods at many levels (physical, chemical, nutritional or sensorial) which are influenced by a number of factors, including processing conditions [2]. Temperature is particularly important because of the effects it produces at the chemical and also at the physical level, particularly colour and texture [3]. In the present work were evaluated the changes in sliced kiwi when exposed to air drying at different temperatures (50, 60, 70, 80 ºC), namely in terms of some chemical properties like ascorbic acid or phenolic compounds, physical characteristics like colour and texture and also at the sensorial level. All experiments followed standard established procedures and several replicates were done to assess each property. The results obtained indicated that moisture was reduced with drying by 74 to 87%, depending on the temperature. Also ascorbic acid decreased with drying, being 7% for 50 ºC and increasing up to 28% for the highest temperature (80 ºC). The phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were also very much affected by the drying temperature. The water activity of the dried samples varied from 0.658 to 0.753, being compatible with a good preservation. Regarding colour, the total colour difference between the dried samples and the fresh sample was found to vary in the range 9.45 – 17.17. The textural parameters were also much affected by drying, namely hardness which decreased by 45 to 72 %, and all other parameters increased: cohesiveness (approximately doubled), springiness (increased 2 to 3 times) and chewiness which increased up to 2.5 times that off the fresh sample. Adhesiveness, which was observed for the fresh samples (-4.02 N.s) disappeared in all the dried samples. The sensorial analysis made to the dried samples allowed establishing the sensorial profiles as shown in Figure 1.

The main objective of blasting is to produce optimum fragmentation for downstream processing. Fragmentation is usually considered optimum when the average fragment size is minimum and the fragmentation distribution as uniform as possible. One of the parameters affecting blasting fragmentation is believed to be time delay between holes of the same row. Although one can find a significant number of studies in the literature, which examine the relationship between time delay and fragmentation, their results have been often controversial. The purpose of this work is to increase the level of understanding of how time delay between holes of the same row affects fragmentation. Two series of experiments were conducted for this purpose. The first series involved tests on small scale grout and granite blocks to determine the moment of burden detachment. The instrumentation used for these experiments consisted mainly of strain gauges and piezoelectric sensors. Some experiments were also recorded with a high speed camera. It was concluded that the time of detachment for this specific setup is between 300 and 600 μs. The second series of experiments involved blasting of a 2 meter high granite bench and its purpose was the determination of the hole-to-hole delay that provides optimum fragmentation. The fragmentation results were assessed with image analysis software. Moreover, vibration was measured close to the blast and the experiments were recorded with high speed cameras. The results suggest that fragmentation was optimum when delays between 4 and 6 ms were used for this specific setup. Also, it was found that the moment at which gases first appear to be venting from the face was consistently around 6 ms after detonation.

Se presentan las propiedades eléctricas del compuesto Cu3BiS3 depositado por co-evaporación. Este es un nuevo compuesto que puede tener propiedades adecuadas para ser utilizado como capa absorbente en celdas solares. Las muestras fueron caracterizadas a través de medidas de efecto Hall y fotovoltaje superficial transiente (SPV). A través de medidas de efecto Hall se encontró que la concentración de portadores de carga n es del orden de 1016 cm-3 independiente de la relación de masas de Cu/Bi. También se encontró que la movilidad de este compuesto (μ del orden de 4 cm2V -1s-1) varía de acuerdo con los mecanismos de transporte que la gobiernan en dependencia con la temperatura. A partir de las medidas de SPV se encontró alta densidad de defectos superficiales, defectos que son pasivados al superponer una capa buffer sobre el compuesto Cu3BiS3.
