A preliminary radiation hybrid (RH) map containing 50 loci on chromosome 7 of the domestic river buffalo Bubalus bubalis (BBU; 2n = 50) was constructed based on a comparative mapping approach. The RH map of BBU7 includes thirty-seven gene markers and thirteen microsatellites. All loci have been previously assigned to Bos taurus (BTA) chromosome BTA6, which is known for its association with several economically important milk production traits in cattle. The map consists of two linkage groups spanning a total length of 627.9 cR(5,000). Comparative analysis of the BBU7 RH 5,000 map with BTA6 in cattle gave new evidence for strong similarity between the two chromosomes over their entire length and exposed minor differences in locus order. Comparison of the BBU7 RH 5,000 map with the Homo sapiens (HSA) genome revealed similarity with a large chromosome segment of HSA4. Comparative analysis of loci in both species revealed more variability than previously known in gene order and several chromosome rearrangements including centromere relocation. The data obtained in our study define the evolutionarily conserved segment on BBU7 and HSA4 to be between 3.5 megabases (Mb) and 115.8 Mb in the HSA4 (genome build 36) DNA sequence. Congenital ectropion uveae is a rare, nonprogressive anomaly characterized by the presence of iris pigment epithelium on the anterior surface of the iris stroma and is occasionally associated with Rieger's anomaly, Prader-Willi syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). The most important complication of ectropion uveae is congenital or juvenile glaucoma. We described a patient with ectropion and the mutation R1748X in the NF1 gene. This is the third report in the literature describing ectropion associated with neurofibromatosis. If this association is confirmed by other authors, the NF1 patients should be examined for the presence of ectropion and, consequently, for the development of glaucoma. Copyright (C) 2004 S. The largest chromosome in the river buffalo karyotype, BBU1, is a submetacentric chromosome with reported homology between BBU1q and bovine chromosome 1 and between BBU1p and BTA27. We present the first radiation hybrid map of this chromosome containing 69 cattle derived markers including 48 coding genes, 17 microsatellites and four ESTs distributed in two linkage groups spanning a total length of 1330.1 cR(5000). The RH map was constructed based on analysis of a recently developed river buffalo-hamster whole genome radiation hybrid (BBURH5000) panel. The retention frequency of individual markers across the panel ranged from 17.8 to 52.2%. With few exceptions, the order of markers within linkage groups is identical to the order established for corresponding cattle RH maps. The BBU1 map provides a starting point for comparison of gene order rearrangements between river buffalo chromosome 1 and its bovine homologs. Copyright (C) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel.

The lipocalin family is a large group of proteins that exhibits great structural and functional variation both within and among species, including a significant number of animal-derived aeroallergens, such as the bovine BDA20 (major cow dander allergen). This protein is classified as an occupational allergen causing asthma and other work-related allergic disorders among dairy farmers. Using a somatic cell panel the BDA20 gene was assigned to the bovine X chromosome (BTAX) with a significant concordant value of 97% to the previously mapped reference marker MAF45. A radiation hybrid (RH) mapping approach confirmed the assignment of BDA20 to BTAX. Two-point LOD scores showed that BDA20 is linked to XBM451 with a LOD score of 22.1 for a 0 value of 0.03.

The aim of this study was to compare microbiological and salivary variables possibly related to caries risk in treated and untreated mouthbreathing syndrome (MBS) children and control children. Thirty control children, 30 mouthbreathers and 25 treated mouthbreathers were studied for the numbers of lactobacilli, mutans streptococci and yeasts in their saliva. Snyder's test, salivary flow and buffering capacity were also evaluated. Levels of immunoglobulins to Candida albicans and Streptococcus mutans in the saliva were quantified using ELISA. Considering the results obtained for the microbiological and salivary caries risk tests, no significant differences were observed among the proportions of patients with small/negative and high/moderate caries risk in the studied groups. The level of IgG to S. mutans was significantly higher in the treated MBS group in relation to MBS patients. on the other hand, the median anti-S. mutans IgM level was lower in the treated MBS patients than in the other groups. For the studied anti-Candida immunoglobulins, IgM level was significantly lower in the treated MBS group than in the other groups. No differences were observed for anti-S. mutans and anti-Candida IgA levels among the groups. The findings suggest that mouthbreathing cannot be considered a risk factor for dental caries. BackgroundParacoccidioidomycosis is not the most common fungal disease in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), except for endemic regions in Latin America countriesCaseA 33-year-old man with HIV presented with mulberry-like lesions on the palate The diagnosis was made by exfoliative cytology and Papanicolaou staining Microscopic analysis revealed fungal structures with birefringent walls and exosporulation conferring an airplane radial motor appearance, or even bowel-like or goblet-like forms compatible with Paracoccidioides brasiliensisConclusionThis process spares the immunosuppressed patient from under going invasive biopsy procedures (Acta Cytol 2010,54 1127-1129)

ObjectiveTo compare the efficacy of Papanicolaou, hematoxylin-eosin (H-E), Leishman and periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining for Cytologic diagnosis of oral lesions.Study DesignPatients from the Discipline of Stomatology, Sao Jose dos Campos Dental School, from the wards of Hospital Heliopolis and from the dentistry outpatient clinic of the University Hospital, University of São Paulo Medical School, with the following diseases, were selected: erythematous candidiasis (n = 9), pseudomembranous candidiasis (n = 10), squamous cell carcinoma In = 19), herpes simplex (n = 8), paracoccidioidomycosis In = 8) and pemphigus vulgaris (n = 1).ResultsThe different staining methods were compared regarding the quality of definition of cytoplasmic and nuclear morphologic characteristics and the identification of bacteria, fungi, inflammatory cells and secretions. Papanicolaou and H-E staining were considered better methods. In cases of fungal infections, PAS staining is useful and should be applied as a complementary method.ConclusionWithin the limitations of this study, it can be concluded that the cytologic diagnosis of oral lesions along with different staining methods is a useful tool for oral diagnosis. G- and C- banding patterns of seven species of the bat family Molossidae, Eumops glaucinus, E. perotis; Molossops abrasus, M. remminckii, Molossus ater, M. molossus, and Nyctinomops laticaudatus, were identified. Comparisons among the karyotypes of these species showed extensive homologies between E. perotis, M. ater, M. molossus, M. abrasus, and N. laticaudatus, demonstrating inter- and intrageneric conservatism, and a lesser degree of homologies in M. temminckii and glaucinus, reflecting intrageneric variation, Chromosomal variation was due to inversions, Robertsonian rearrangements, translocations, and variations in the location of constitutive heterochromatin and nucleolus organizer regions. The chromosome corresponding to No. 5 in the M. ater karyotype is discussed. We suggest that the Nyctinomops and Molossops karyotypes represent the primitive condition and that Molossus and Eumops have derived karyotypes.
