During a long time, origami was associated with decoration and craft production of ornaments and figures. However, in the end of 20th century, it began to be studied by mathematicians who were looking for interrelationships between this art and science. Through disciplines like geometry, trigonometry, calculation and linear algebra, they generated a set of axioms and theorems that became possible specific conversion of origami in computational geometry and the development of several softwares. Thus, origami began to be applied in engineering and design studies of innovative product and the term “origamics” was created to demonstrate its interdisciplinary nature. In this article will be presented some works exploring the constructive principles of origami to contribute with the diffusion of origamics. In this way more professionals will be able to understand the scientific and technological potential of this art.

The field of "computer security" is often considered something in between Art and Science. This is partly due to the lack of widely agreed and standardized methodologies to evaluate the degree of the security of a system. This dissertation intends to contribute to this area by investigating the most common security testing strategies applied nowadays and by proposing an enhanced methodology that may be effectively applied to different threat scenarios with the same degree of effectiveness. Security testing methodologies are the first step towards standardized security evaluation processes and understanding of how the security threats evolve over time. This dissertation analyzes some of the most used identifying differences and commonalities, useful to compare them and assess their quality. The dissertation then proposes a new enhanced methodology built by keeping the best of every analyzed methodology. The designed methodology is tested over different systems with very effective results, which is the main evidence that it could really be applied in practical cases. Most of the dissertation discusses and proves how the presented testing methodology could be applied to such different systems and even to evade security measures by inverting goals and scopes. Real cases are often hard to find in methodology' documents, in contrary this dissertation wants to show real and practical cases offering technical details about how to apply it. Electronic voting systems are the first field test considered, and Pvote and Scantegrity are the two tested electronic voting systems. The usability and effectiveness of the designed methodology for electronic voting systems is proved thanks to this field cases analysis. Furthermore reputation and anti virus engines have also be analyzed with similar results. The dissertation concludes by presenting some general guidelines to build a coordination-based approach of electronic voting systems to improve the security without decreasing the system modularity.

The Department of Special Collections is fortunate to have a number of 19th Century illustrated bird books. These books, filled with hand-colored plates, were produced at a time when there was tremendous interest in the descriptions of new species of birds. At the same time, a new printing technique, lithography, made illustration of new species a simpler process. This combination of art and science resulted in lovely volumes like those on display.

ABSTRACT. Light technology development would lead to a social, cultural and economic transformation. Both spatial consideration of “Modern Movement” and Second World War effects on technology, would have a visible aftereffect on spatial configuration and on the symbiotic and mutual relationship between ideology & technology. Comprehension adjustment on the articulation of space together with technology development, would impact on how space is perceived and felt. Exhibition space and scenic space would turn into a laboratory where developing and making comprehensive all illusory potential of light, projection and image. These new parameters would modify and revitalize the architectonic space. as modifying and revitalizing parameters of architectonic space. Spatial experimentation would be preceded by conceptual creation and investigation on the sculptural field, where new mechanic media would be responsible for a fresh and modern look influenced by technical elements. Optical experimentation, through photography, cinema or light movement and its perception, would turn into essential components for spatial arrangement linked to new ways of performance and communication. This experimentation sphere would be clear at The Bauhaus School, by the hand of Gropius, Schlemmer or Moholy Nag among others; in theoretical, theatrical or architectural performance’s projects, that would evolve based on technology and also based on the transformation of the relationship with the observer. Exhibition and perfor-mance areas would be taken as opportunities of spatial investigation and for the analysis of the different ways of perception, thus becoming key places for learning. Theater is postulated as a meeting point between art and technique, taking on a new significance at its intersection with other disciplines working with spatial definition too. The multiple innovation techniques linked to the new foundations for the theater regarding stage relation, would have as a consequence the regeneration of the space. Space would turn dynamic, both physically and perceptibly, bringing innovative spatial conceptions, many of them unrealistic. Light, projection and illusory creation based on sound and visual stimulus would appear as intangible and momentary design components, which would have a great impact on the space and on the way it is experienced. Implication of technology in art would bring changes on the observer as well as on the spatial configuration of the art spaces2. It would stand out as a proposal Walter Groupis Total Theater, whose development would include somehow the spatial experiments and studies about formal structure of perception accomplished by Moholy Nagy besides the concepts regarding stage space enhanced at the Bauhaus Theater Studio by Oskar Schlemmer. Within Total Theater, Groupis would incorporate his own view about traditional theatric architecture and conceptual innovations that were taking place since the end of the nineteenth century, such as active audience participation or the diffusing limits between scene and audience, establishing a new perception relationship between auditorium, performance and audience, improving the feeling of immersion through the use of physics, optics and acoustics, creating a concentric energy capable of spreading in all directions. Total Theater would be one of the first example in which, from the beginning of the Project, image is combined as a communicating element with the spatial configuration. As a premise of development, new stage arrangement would have the capacity of transformation, both perceptive and physically. During the second half or the twentieth century, the creation of investigation centers such as CAVS (Center for Advanced Visual Studies, 1967) or EAT (Experiments in Art and Technology, 1966), would help to the interdisciplinary collaboration between art and science, involving technology companies like Siemens, HP, IBM or Philips, providing technical and economic support to the development of new systems. This interdisciplinary collaboration would give room to a series of spatial interventions which would have visibility in some Universal Exhibitions. The result would be, in most cases, the creation of immersive character spaces, where a symbiotic relationship would be stablished between space, image, sound and audience. The new location of the audience in the middle of the display, together with the dynamic arrangement of sound and image would create a particular, no lineal narrative conceived to be experienced. Since the first cinema projections, the multiple screen of Eames, the spatial techniques for sound dissemination at Stockhausen or the interactive physical movement experimentation, image, motion light and sound would turn inevitably into architectural material.

ABSTRACT The relationship between Mies van der Rohe with the symmetry is an invariant which is intuited in his entire work beyond his intentional invisibility. Based on the modern project as a paradoxical process, which Mies expresses in his aphorisms know as the famous “less is more”, the thesis is intended to approach this key concept in architecture through one of his most important works: The German Pavilion for the World Expo in 1929 in Barcelona, an example of asymmetric floor according to Bruno Zevi and a “real Trojan horse loaded with symmetries”. As defined by Robin Evans. For modernity, this Pavilion represented the culmination of a decade which radically changed the vision of architecture so far, thanks to the inclusive character of the paradoxical and the innumerable connections that there were amongst the different disciplines, as antagonistic as Art and Science. Of the latter, an expanded definition of symmetry is proposed as the principle of equivalence between elements from the invariance. Incorporated into this definition is the sense defined by Leterman as “expression of equality,” like the one proposed by Hermann Weyl in his book Symmetry as “configuration invariance under a group of automorphisms” (a book which Mies had in his private library). Precisely for Weyl, the empty space has a high degree of symmetry. “Each point is equal to the other, and in none are there intrinsic differences among the diverse directions.” Based on this new meaning, Mies’ work acquires another meaning approaching the materialization of that space, which he intended to “reflect” the spirit of the time and whose genesis is postulated in the Noether’s theorem which establishes that “for every continuous symmetry of physical laws, there must be a law of conservation.” These continuous symmetries are the invisible empty space symmetries which reveal themselves “apparently” as opposition to the structures of matter symmetries, of those which are full, but which participate in the same Mies aporetic logic, if deemed other material, and which is defined as (un)limited, weight(less), (un)finished and (im)material. Finally, one more paradox: the “universal space” which Mies search for, he did not find it in America, but at this pavilion, just as the contemporary architects like Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa (SANAA) rightfully intuited, as legitimate heirs of the German master.
