Semicarbazide hydrobromide which is isomorphous with SEM.HCl, was expected to belong to a new family of ferroelectrics. Dielectric, thermal and other studies on these crystals have yielded results which show many peculiarities but not confirmed ferroelectricity in the low temperature phase. As such a Laser Raman spectrosocopic study of oriented singe crystals of SEM.HBr was made at 298°K and at 253°K. The results have been correlated with structural features and compared with SEM.HCl.

A 16-µm CO2-N2 downstream-mixing gasdynamic laser, where a cold CO2 stream is mixed with a vibrationally excited N2 stream at the exit of the nozzle, is studied theoretically. The flow field is analyzed using a two-dimensional, unsteady, laminar and viscous flow model including appropriate finite-rate vibrational kinetic equations. The analysis showed that local small-signal gain up to 21.75 m−1 can be obtained for a N2 reservoir temperature of 2000 K and a velocity ratio of 1:1 between the CO2 and N2 mixing streams. Microbes and their exopolysaccharides (EPS) can block xylem vessels, thereby increasing the hydraulic resistance and decreasing the vase life of cut flowers and foliage. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) provides a powerful tool for investigation of bacteria-induced xylem occlusion. However, conventional preparation protocols for SEM involving chemicals can cause loss of hydrated EPS material, and thereby damage the bacterial biofilms during dehydration. A modified chemical fixation protocol involving pre-fixation with 75 mM lysine plus 2.5% glutaraldehyde followed by the normal fixation in 3% glutaraldehyde was, therefore, tested for improved preservation of bacterial biofilm at the stem-ends of cut Acacia holosericea foliage stems. Stem-end segments with different stages of bacterial growth were obtained from stems stood into water. The lysine-based protocol was compared with four other processing protocols of critical point drying (CPD) without fixation (control), freeze-drying (FD), conventional chemical fixation followed by drying with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS), and conventional chemical fixation with CPD. The non-fixed control. FD and the glutaraldehyde fixation with HMDS drying gave poor preservation of hydrated material, including bacterial EPS. Conventional glutaraldehyde fixation followed by CPD was superior to these three methods in terms of better preserving the EPS. However, this fourth method gave condensation of biofilms during dehydration. In contrast, the modified lysine-based protocol resulted in superior preservation of EPS and biofilm structure. Thus, this fifth method was the most appropriate for examination of bacterial stem-end blockage in cut ornamentals. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mm-wave radars have an important role to play in field robotics for applications that require reliable perception in challenging environmental conditions. This paper presents an experimental characterisation of the Delphi Electronically Scanning Radar (ESR) for mobile robotics applications. The performance of the sensor is evaluated in terms of detection ability and accuracy, for varying factors including: sensor temperature, time, target’s position, speed, shape and material. We also evaluate the sensor’s target separability performance.

This thesis contains five experimental spectroscopic studies that probe the vibration-rotation energy level structure of acetylene and some of its isotopologues. The emphasis is on the development of laser spectroscopic methods for high-resolution molecular spectroscopy. Three of the experiments use cavity ringdown spectroscopy. One is a standard setup that employs a non-frequency stabilised continuous wave laser as a source. In the other two experiments, the same laser is actively frequency stabilised to the ringdown cavity. This development allows for increased repetition rate of the experimental signal and thus the spectroscopic sensitivity of the method is improved. These setups are applied to the recording of several vibration-rotation overtone bands of both H(12)C(12)CH and H(13)C(13)CH. An intra-cavity laser absorption spectroscopy setup that uses a commercial continuous wave ring laser and a Fourier transform interferometer is presented. The configuration of the laser is found to be sub-optimal for high-sensitivity work but the spectroscopic results are good and show the viability of this type of approach. Several ro-vibrational bands of carbon-13 substituted acetylenes are recorded and analysed. Compared with earlier work, the signal-to-noise ratio of a laser-induced dispersed infrared fluorescence experiment is enhanced by more than one order of magnitude by exploiting the geometric characteristics of the setup. The higher sensitivity of the spectrometer leads to the observation of two new symmetric vibrational states of H(12)C(12)CH. The precision of the spectroscopic parameters of some previously published symmetric states is also improved. An interesting collisional energy transfer process is observed for the excited vibrational states and this phenomenon is explained by a simple step-down model.

A period timing device suitable for processing laser Doppler anemometer signals has been described here. The important features of this instrument are: it is inexpensive, simple to operate, and easy to fabricate. When the concentration of scattering particles is low the Doppler signal is in the form of a burst and the Doppler frequency is measured by timing the zero crossings of the signal. But the presence of noise calls for the use of validation criterion, and a 5–8 cycles comparison has been used in this instrument. Validation criterion requires the differential count between the 5 and 8 cycles to be multiplied by predetermined numbers that prescribe the accuracy of measurement. By choosing these numbers to be binary numbers, much simplification in circuit design has been accomplished since this permits the use of shift registers for multiplication. Validation accuracies of 1.6%, 3.2%, 6.3%, and 12.5% are possible with this device. The design presented here is for a 16-bit processor and uses TTL components. By substituting Schottky barrier TTLs the clock frequency can be increased from about 10 to 30 MHz resulting in an extension in the range of the instrument. Examination of the structure of worn surfaces has shown that the wear of LM13 and LM13-graphite particulate composite is controlled by the nature and extent of subsurface deformation. The addition of graphite influences the wear characteristics by affecting the plastically deformed zone. The possible mechanisms of wear are discussed.

A simple technique for determining the energy sensitivities for the thermographic recording of laser beams is described. The principle behind this technique is that, if a laser beam with a known spatial distribution such as a Gaussian profile is used for imaging, the radius of the thermal image formed depends uniquely on the intensity of the impinging beam. Thus by measuring the radii of the images produced for different incident beam intensities the minimum intensity necessary (that is, the threshold) for thermographic imaging is found. The diameter of the laser beam can also be found from this measurement. A simple analysis based on the temperature distribution in the laser heated material shows that there is an inverse square root dependence on pulse duration or period of exposure for the energy fluence of the laser beam required, both for the threshold and the subsequent increase in the size of the recording. It has also been shown that except for low intensity, long duration exposure on very low conductivity materials, heat losses are not very significant.

Differential scanning calorimetric studies on ammonium perchlorate have been carried out. The enthalpy values for the phase transition endotherm and the two exotherms have been reported in the present communication. A new method has been developed for the estimation of kinetic parameters from DSC the mograms. The values for activation energy as calculated by the above method for low temperature and high temperature exotherms are in close agreement with literature values. The present studies also confirm the presence of small exothermic peaks at the initial stages of high temperature exotherm. Explanation for the same has been given.

Serial Block-Face Scanning Electron Microscopy (SBF-SEM) was used in this study to examine the ultrastructural morphology of Penaeus monodon spermatozoa. SBF-SEM provided a large dataset of sequential electron-microscopic-level images that facilitated comprehensive ultrastructural observations and three-dimensional reconstructions of the sperm cell. Reconstruction divulged a nuclear region of the spermatophoral spermatozoon filled with decondensed chromatin but with two apparent levels of packaging density. In addition, the nuclear region contained, not only numerous filamentous chromatin elements with dense microregions, but also large centrally gathered granular masses. Analysis of the sperm cytoplasm revealed the presence of degenerated mitochondria and membrane-less dense granules. A large electron-lucent vesicle and "arch-like" structures were apparent in the subacrosomal area, and an acrosomal core was found in the acrosomal vesicle. The spermatozoal spike arose from the inner membrane of the acrosomal vesicle, which was slightly bulbous in the middle region of the acrosomal vesicle, but then extended distally into a broad dense plate and to a sharp point proximally. This study has demonstrated that SBF-SEM is a powerful technique for the 3D ultrastructural reconstruction of prawn spermatozoa, that will no doubt be informative for further studies of sperm assessment, reproductive pathology and the spermiocladistics of penaeid prawns, and other decapod crustaceans. Characterisation of a number of key wood properties utilising ‘state of the art’ tools was achieved for four commercial Australian hardwood species: Corymbia citriodora, Eucalyptus pilularis, Eucalyptus marginata and Eucalyptus obliqua. The wood properties were measured for input into microscopic (cellular level) and macroscopic (board level) vacuum drying models currently under development. Morphological characterisation was completed using a combination of ESEM, optical microscopy and a custom vector-based image analysis software. A clear difference in wood porosity, size, wall thickness and orientation was evident between species. Wood porosity was measured using a combination of fibre and vessel porosity. A highly sensitive microbalance and scanning laser micrometres were used to measure loss of moisture content in conjunction with directional shrinkage on micro-samples of E. obliqua to investigate the validity of measuring collapse-free shrinkage in very thin sections. Collapse-free shrinkage was characterised, and collapse propensity was verified when testing thicker samples. Desorption isotherms were calculated for each species using wood–water relations data generated from shrinkage experiments. Fibre geometry and wood shrinkage anisotropy were used to explain the observed difficulty in drying of the different species in terms of collapse and drying stress-related degrade.

The Distributed Network Protocol v3.0 (DNP3) is one of the most widely used protocols to control national infrastructure. The move from point-to-point serial connections to Ethernet-based network architectures, allowing for large and complex critical infrastructure networks. However, networks and con- figurations change, thus auditing tools are needed to aid in critical infrastructure network discovery. In this paper we present a series of intrusive techniques used for reconnaissance on DNP3 critical infrastructure. Our algorithms will discover DNP3 outstation slaves along with their DNP3 addresses, their corresponding master, and class object configurations. To validate our presented DNP3 reconnaissance algorithms and demonstrate it’s practicality, we present an implementation of a software tool using a DNP3 plug-in for Scapy. Our implementation validates the utility of our DNP3 reconnaissance technique. Our presented techniques will be useful for penetration testing, vulnerability assessments and DNP3 network discovery.
