All doublet and quartet electronic states correlating with the first dissociation channel of SeCl and some Rydberg states are investigated theoretically at the CASSCF/MRCI level of theory using extended basis sets, including the contribution of spin-orbit effects. The similarity of the potential energy curves with those of SeF suggests that spectroscopic constants for the ground (X (2)Pi) and the first excited quartet (a(4)Sigma) of SeCl could also be determined via an emission resulting from the reaction of selenium with atomic chlorine. The coupling constant of the ground state at R-e is estimated as -1610 cm (1). The potential energy curves calculated and the derived spectroscopic constants do not support the interpretation and assignment of the scarce transitions recorded experimentally as due to (2)Pi-(2)Pi emissions. That the few observed lines might arise from transitions from the state b(4)Sigma(-)(1/2) to a very high vibrational level of the state a(4)Sigma(-)(1/2) is an open possibility, however, the number of vibrational states and the calculated Delta G(1/2) differ significantly from the reported ones. Studies in regions of the nuclear chart in which the model predictions of properties of nuclei fail can bring a better understanding of the strong interaction in the nuclear medium. To such regions belongs the so called "island of inversion" centered around Ne, Na and Mg isotopes with 20 neutrons in which unexpected ground-state spins, large deformations and dense low-energy spectra appear. This is a strong argument that the magic N = 20 is not a closed shell in this area. In this thesis investigations of isotope shifts of stable 24,25,26Mg, as well as spins and magnetic moments of short-lived 29,31Mg are presented. The successful studies were performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN using collinear laser and beta-NMR spectroscopy techniques. The isotopes were investigated as single-charged ions in the 280-nm transition from the atomic ground state 2S1/2 to one of the two lowest excited states 2P1/2,3/2 using continuous wave laser beams. The isotope-shift measurements with fluorescence detection for the three stable isotopes show that it is feasible to perform the same studies on radioactive Mg isotopes up to the "island of inversion". This will allow to determine differences in the mean charge square radii and interpret them in terms of deformation. The high detection efficiency for beta particles and optical pumping close to saturation allowed to obtain very good beta-asymmetry signals for 29Mg and 31Mg with half-lives around 1 s and production yields about 10^5 ions/s. For this purpose the ions were implanted into a host crystal lattice. Such detection of the atomic resonances revealed their hyperfine structure, which gives the sign and a first estimate of the value of the magnetic moment. The nuclear magnetic resonance gave also their g-factors with the relative uncertainty smaller than 0.2 %. By combining the two techniques also the nuclear spin of both isotopes could be unambiguously determined. The measured spins and g-factors show that 29Mg with 17 neutrons lies outside the "island of inversion". On the other hand, 31Mg with 19 neutrons has an unexpected ground-state spin which can be explained only by promoting at least two neutrons across the N = 20 shell gap. This places the above nucleus inside the "island". However, modern shell-model approaches cannot predict this level as the ground state but only as one of the low-lying states, even though they reproduce very well the experimental g-factor. This indicates that modifications to the available interactions are required. Future measurements include isotope shift measurements on radioactive Mg isotopes and beta-NMR studies on 33Mg.

A novel concept of producing high dc voltage for pulsed-power applications is proposed in this paper. The topology consists of an LC resonant circuit supplied through a tuned alternating waveform that is produced by an inverter. The control scheme is based on the detection of variations in the resonant frequency and adjustment of the switching signal patterns for the inverter to produce a square waveform with exactly the same frequencies. Therefore the capacitor voltage oscillates divergently with an increasing amplitude. A simple one-stage capacitor-diode voltage multiplier (CDVM) connected to the resonant capacitor then rectifies the alternating voltage and gives a dc level equal to twice the input voltage amplitude. The produced high voltage appears then in the form of high-voltage pulses across the load. A basic model is simulated by Simulink platform of MATLAB and the results are included in the paper.

Carbon nanoflakes (CNFLs) are synthesized on silicon substrates deposited with carbon islands in a methane environment using hot filament chemical vapor deposition. The structure and composition of the CNFLs are studied using field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, micro-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicate that the CNFLs are composed of multilayer graphitic sheets and the area and thickness of CNFs increase with the growth time. The photoluminescence (PL) of CNFLs excited by a 325 nm He-Cd laser exhibits three strong bands centered at 408, 526, and 699 nm, which are related to the chemical radicals terminated on the CNFLs and the associated interband transitions. The PL results indicate that the CNFLs are promising as an advanced nano-carbon material capable of generating white light emission. These outcomes are significant to control the electronic structure of CNFLs and contribute to the development of next-generation solid-state white light emission devices. © 2014 the Partner Organisations.

This study shows that there is positive regulatory effect of feedback from pupils to teachers on Assessment for Learning (AfL), classroom proactiveness, and on visible and progressive learning but not on behaviour. This research finding further articulates feedback from pupil to teacher as a paradigm shift from the classical paradigm of feedback from teacher to pupil. Here, the emphasis is geared towards pupils understanding of objectives built from previous knowledge. These are then feedback onto the teachers by the pupils in the form of discrete loops of cues and questions, where they are with their learning. This therefore enables them to move to the next level of understanding, and thus acquired independence, which in turn is reflected by their success in both formative and summative assessments. This study therefore shows that when feedback from pupil to teacher is used in combination with teacher to pupil feedback, AfL is ameliorated and hence, visible and accelerated learning occurs in a gender, nor subject non-dependent manner.

High-pressure magnetic susceptibility measurements have been carried out on Fe(dipy)2(NCS)2 and Fe(phen)2(NCS)2 in the pressure range 1–10 kbar and tempeature range 80–300 K in order to investigate the factors responsible for the spin-state transitions. The transitions change from first order to second or higher order upon application of pressure. The temperature variation of the susceptibility at different pressures has been analysed quantitatively within the framework of available models. It is shown that the relative magnitudes of the ΔG0 of high-spin and low-spin conversion and the ferromagnetic interaction between high-spin complexes determines the nature of the transition.

We have measured hyperfine structure in the first-excited P state (D lines) of all the naturally occurring alkali atoms. We use high-resolution laser spectroscopy to resolve hyperfine transitions, and measure intervals by locking the frequency shift produced by an acousto-optic modulator to the difference between two transitions. In most cases, the hyperfine coupling constants derived from our measurements improve previous values significantly.
New Solid State Forms of the Anti-HIV Drug Efavirenz. Conformational Flexibility and High Z ` Issues
Resumo:
Structural information on the solid forms of efavirenz, a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, is limited, although various polymorphic forms of this drug have been patented. We report here structural studies of four new crystal forms a pure form, a cyclohexane solvate, and cocrystals with 1,4-cyclohexanedione and 4,4'-bipyridine. Temperature dependent single-crystal to single-crystal phase transitions are observed for the pure form and for the cyclohexane solvate with an increase in the number of symmetry independent molecules, Z', upon a lowering of temperature. Other issues related to these solid forms, such as thermal stability, conformational flexibility, and high Z' occurrences, are addressed by using a combined experimental and computational approach.

High-temperature superconductivity in oxides of the type(La, Ln)2?xBax(Sr)xCuO4, Y(Ln)Ba2Cu3O7??, La3?xBa3+xCu6O14, and related systems is discussed with emphasis on aspects related to experimental solid-state chemistry. All of these oxides possess perovskite-related structures. Oxygen-excess and La-deficient La2CuO4 also exhibit superconductivity in the 2040 K just as La2?xBax(Srx)CuO4; these oxides are orthorhombic in the superconductivity phase. The crucial role of oxygen stoichiometry in the superconductivity ofYBa2Cu3O7?? (Tc = 95 ± 5K) is examined; this oxide remains orthorhombic up to ? ? 0.6 and becomes tetragonal and nonsuperconducting beyond this value of ?. Oxygen stoichiometry in this and related oxides has to be understood in terms of structure and disorder. The structure of La3?xBa3+xCu6O14 is related to that of YBa2Cu3O7, the orthorhombic structure manifesting itself when the population of O1 oxygens (along the Cusingle bondOsingle bondCu chains) is preponderant compared to that of O5 oxygens (along thea-axis); nearly equal populations of O1 and O5 sites give rise to the tetragonal structure. A transition from a high-Tc (95 K) superconductivity regime to a low-Tc (not, vert, similar60 K) regime occurs in YBa2Cu3O7?? accompanying a change in ?. There is no evidence for Cu3+ in these nominally mixed valent copper oxides. Instead, holes are present on oxygens giving rise to O? or O2?2 species, the concentration of these species increasing with the lowering of temperature. Certain interesting aspects of the superconducting oxides such as domain or twin boundaries, Raman spectra, microwave absorption, and anomalous high-temperature resistivity drops are presented along with the important material parameters. Preparative aspects of the superconducting oxides are briefly discussed. Phase transitions seem to occur atTc as well as at not, vert, similar240 K in YBa2Cu3O7.

Infrared spectroscopy provides a valuable tool to investigate the spin-state transition in Fe(II) complexes of the type Fe(Phen)2(NCS)2. With progressive substitution of Fe by Mn, the first-order transition changes over to a second-order transition, with a high residual population of the high-spin state even at very low temperatures

While C60 interacts with aromatic amines such as dimethylaniline in the ground state, C70 does not. Fluorescence spectroscopic studies, including lifetime measurements, show the formation of exciplexes of both C60 and C70 with aromatic amines in nonaromatic solvents such as methylcyclohexane. Exciplexes are however not formed in benzene solvent, due to π—π interaction between benzene and the fullerene. Based on spectroscopic absorption measurements, it is shown that both C60 and C70 do indeed interact with benzene in the ground state.

We present observations of the C270alpha carbon recombination line, 21 cm neutral hydrogen line and (CO)-C-12 (J = 1 --> 0) molecular line toward Cas A. A comparison of the distribution of recombination line optical depths over the face of Cas A with that of H I optical depths and molecular line emission favors the association of C270alpha regions with H I rather than molecular clouds. The association makes it possible to self-consistently determine several physical parameters of the clouds by combining the recombination line and 21 cm H I measurements.

A theoretical study of the dynamics of photo-electron transfer reactions in the Marcus inverted regime is presented. This study is motivated partly by the recent proposal of Barbara et al. (J. Phys. Chem. 96, 3728, 1991) that a minimal model of an electron transfer reaction should consist of a polar solvent mode (X), a low frequency vibrational mode (Q) and one high frequency mode (q). Interplay between these modes may be responsible for the crossover observed in the dynamics from a solvent controlled to a vibrational controlled electron transfer. The following results have been obtained. (i) In the case of slowly relaxing solvents, the proximity of the point of excitation to an effective sink on the excited surface is critical in determining the decay of the reactant population. This is because the Franck-Condon overlap between the reactant ground and the product excited states decreases rapidly with increase in the quantum number of the product vibrational state. (ii) Non-exponential solvation dynamics has an important effect in determining the rates of electron transfer. Especially, a biphasic solvation and a large coupling between the reactant and the product states both may be needed to explain the experimental results. ©1996 American Institute of Physics

We have investigated tunneling conductances in disordered, normally conducting perovskite oxides close to the metalinsulator transition. We show that the normal state tunneling conductance of perovskite oxides can be cast in a general form G(V) = G0[1 + curly logical orV/V*curly logical orn] with 1?n?0.5 and where V* is an intrinsic energy scale. The exponent n graduall y increases from 0.5 to 1 as the metal-insulator (M-I) transition is approached. In the high-Tc Bi(2212) cuprates, the normally observed, linear G(V)(n=1) can be made sub-linear (n<1) by substitution of Ca with Y. From the similarity of the linear conductances, we suggest proximity to the M-I transition as a likely cause for this G(V)logical or, bar below V dependence. In systems showing linear conductances (nreverse similar, equals1), we find that ?G/?Vreverse similar, equalsG?0 with ?reverse similar, equals 1 and the intrinsic energy scale V*reverse similar, equals2575 meV in the different oxides investigated.

The Norrish type II processes of methyl-2,2-dimethyl- cyclopropyl ketone, alpha-alkoxy acetones and alkyl pyruvates have been examined using the AM1 semi-empirical molecular orbital method with complete geometry optimization at the partial configuration interaction level in the restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) frame. The results reveal that the methyl-substituted cyclopropyl ketone has a constrained geometry favourable for hydrogen abstraction from the gamma-position relative to the carbonyl group in the excited singlet state. The presence of the ether oxygen atom in the beta-position relative to the carbonyl group in alkoxy acetones and alkyl pyruvates leads to increased reactivity relative to alkyl monoketones and diketones respectively. The cyclization of 1:4 biradicals has been studied in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) frame, and the results reveal that the 1:4 biradical derived from alkoxy acetones readily cyclizes to form oxetanols. On the other hand, in the 1:4 biradicals derived from methyl-substituted cyclopropyl ketone, the three-membered ring breaks readily to form an enol intermediate. Delocalization of an odd electron in 1:4 biradicals derived from alkyl pyruvates is thought to make cyclization difficult.
