Full text: There are phrases in daily use today which were not so common a decade or so back, such as ‘ageing population’ or ‘climate changes’ or ‘emerging markets’ or even ‘social networking’. How do these things affect our lives is certainly interesting but for us as eye care practitioners how these changes affect our clinical work may be also relevant and sometimes more interesting. A recent advertisement for recruitment to the Royal Marine Corps of the British Army ended with a comment ‘find us on Facebook!’ The BCLA, IACLE and other organisations as well as many manufacturers have their own Facebook groups. In 2011 Chandni Thakkar was awarded the BCLA summer studentship and her project was based around increasing the contact lens business of a small independent optometric practice where contact lens sales were minimal. The practice typically recruited one new wearer per month. Chandni was able to increase the number of new patient fits with various strategies (her work was presented as poster at the 2012 BCLA conference in Birmingham). One of her strategies was to start a Facebook group and 655 joined the special group she started in just over a month. Interestingly she found that the largest single factor in convincing patients to trial contact lenses was recommendation by the eye care practitioner at the end of the examination, but nonetheless it is interesting that so many people used the social networking site to find out more information regarding contact lenses in her study. Moreover, we already see the use, by some practitioners, of smart phone ‘apps’ or electronic diaries or text messages when coordinating patient check-ups. Climate change has affected the way we think and act; we now leave out special recycle bins and we hope that the items that are recyclable are actually recycled and do not just join our other refuse somewhere down the track! How environmentally friendly are contact lenses? This was discussed by various speakers at this year's BCLA conference in Birmingham. Daily disposable lenses surely produce more contact lens waste but do not involve solutions in plastic bottles like monthly lenses. It is certainly something that manufacturers are taking seriously and of course there are environmental benefits but the cynic in each of us sees the marketing potential too. The way the ageing population is certainly something that will impact all healthcare providers. In the case of eye care with people living longer they will need refractive corrections for longer. Furthermore, since presbyopes are not resigning themselves to only gentle hobbies like knitting and gardening, but instead want to continue playing tennis or skiing or whatever, their visual demands are becoming more complex. This is certainly an area that contact lens manufacturers are focussing on (pun not intended!). Again the BCLA conference in Birmingham saw the launch of various new products by different companies to help us deal with our presbyopic contact lens wearers. It is great to have such choice and now with fitting methods becoming easier too we have no excuse not to try them out with our clients. Finally to emerging markets – well there was not a specific session at the BCLA conference in May discussing this but this most certainly would have been discussed by professional services managers and marketing directors of most of the contact lens companies. ‘How will we conquer China?’ ‘How can we increase our market share in Russia?’ Or ‘How should we spend our marketing budget in India?’ These topics as well as others would certainly have cropped up in backroom discussions. Certainly groups like IACLE (International Association of CL Educators) have increasing numbers of members and activities in developing markets to ensure that educators educate, to that practitioners can practice successfully and in turn patients can become successful contact lenses wearers. Companies also wish to increase their market share in these developing markets and from the point of view of CLAE we are certainly seeing more papers being submitted from these parts of the world. The traditional centres of knowledge are being challenged, I suppose as they have been throughout history, and this can only be a good thing for the pursuit of science. The BCLA conference in Birmingham welcomed more international visitors than ever, and from more countries, and long may that continue. Similarly, CLAE looks forward to a wider audience in years to come and a wider network of authors too.

Airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology has become the primary method to derive high-resolution Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), which are essential for studying Earth's surface processes, such as flooding and landslides. The critical step in generating a DTM is to separate ground and non-ground measurements in a voluminous point LIDAR dataset, using a filter, because the DTM is created by interpolating ground points. As one of widely used filtering methods, the progressive morphological (PM) filter has the advantages of classifying the LIDAR data at the point level, a linear computational complexity, and preserving the geometric shapes of terrain features. The filter works well in an urban setting with a gentle slope and a mixture of vegetation and buildings. However, the PM filter often removes ground measurements incorrectly at the topographic high area, along with large sizes of non-ground objects, because it uses a constant threshold slope, resulting in "cut-off" errors. A novel cluster analysis method was developed in this study and incorporated into the PM filter to prevent the removal of the ground measurements at topographic highs. Furthermore, to obtain the optimal filtering results for an area with undulating terrain, a trend analysis method was developed to adaptively estimate the slope-related thresholds of the PM filter based on changes of topographic slopes and the characteristics of non-terrain objects. The comparison of the PM and generalized adaptive PM (GAPM) filters for selected study areas indicates that the GAPM filter preserves the most "cut-off" points removed incorrectly by the PM filter. The application of the GAPM filter to seven ISPRS benchmark datasets shows that the GAPM filter reduces the filtering error by 20% on average, compared with the method used by the popular commercial software TerraScan. The combination of the cluster method, adaptive trend analysis, and the PM filter allows users without much experience in processing LIDAR data to effectively and efficiently identify ground measurements for the complex terrains in a large LIDAR data set. The GAPM filter is highly automatic and requires little human input. Therefore, it can significantly reduce the effort of manually processing voluminous LIDAR measurements.

The Dissertation aimed to advance the geological knowledge of the Barcelona Granitic Pluton (BGP). This body is located in the eastern portion of the Rio Grande do Norte Domain (RND), within the São José do Campestre subdomain (SJC), NE of the Borborema Province. The main goal was to understand the geological evolution of the rocks of the pluton and the tectonic setting of magma generation and its emplacement. The BGP has an assumed Ediacaran age and outcropping area of approximately 260 km2, being composed of three varied petrographic/textural facies: (a) porphyritic biotite monzogranite; (b) dykes and sheets of biotite microgranite; (c) dioritic to quartz-dioritic enclaves. The rocks of the BGP have the following structures: (i) a NE-SW and NW-SE directed magmatic fabric (Sγ), accompanied by a magmatic lineation (Lγ) with gentle dip to NE-SW and NW-SE. In the southern portion, there is the concentric pattern of this foliation with medium to high dip, and (ii) a solid state foliation, in part mylonitic (S3+), mainly on the eastern edge with slightly plunging to west. The integration of structural and gravity data permitted to interpret the emplacement of the BGP as controlled by the transcurrent shear zones systems Lajes Pintadas (LPSZ) and Sítio Novo (SNSZ), both of dextral strike-slip kinematics. Mineral chemistry data show that the amphibole form the porphyritic biotite monzogranite facies is hastingsite with moderate Mg / (Mg + Fe) ratios, indicating crystallization under moderate to high ƒO2 and cristallization pressure of around 5.0-6.0 kbar. The biotite tends to be slightly richer in annite molecule and plots in the transitional field from primary biotite to reequilibrated biotite. In discriminant diagrams of magmatic series, the biotite behave like those of subalkaline affinity, consistent with the potassium calc-alkaline / sub-alkaline geochemical affinity of the hosting rock. The opaque minerals are primarily magnetite, with some crystals martitized to hematite indicating relatively oxidizing conditions during magma evolution that originated the BGP. Zoning in plagioclase, K-feldspar and allanite crystals suggest fractional crystallization process. Lithogeochemical data suggest that the facies described for the BGP have similar magma source, usually plotting in the fields and trends of the subalkaline / high potassium calc-alkaline series.

On the continental rise west of the Antarctic Peninsula there are nine large mounds interpreted as sediment drifts, separated by turbidity current channels. Drift 7 is 150 km long, 70 km wide and up to 700 m high and is asymmetric, with steep sides on the south-east (towards the continent) and south-west, and gentle slopes to north-west and north-east. Cores on the gentle sides of the drift show a cyclicity between brown, bioturbated, diatom-bearing mud with foraminifera and radiolarians, and grey, laminated, barren mud. Biostratigraphic evidence is consistent with a Late Quaternary age. Detailed lithostratigraphy and magnetic susceptibility data allow precise correlation over distances of tens of kilometres. On the basis of chemostratigraphy, the brown sediment is interpreted as interglacial (isotope stages 1 and 5) and the grey as glacial (stages 2-4 and 6). Sedimentation rates are 3.0-5.5 cm/ka. Cores on the steep sides of the drift recovered a condensed section with thinner cycles and hiatuses. Fine grain size, very poor sorting and the absence of a mode in the silt size range indicate deposition from suspension with only weak current activity, There is little evidence for cyclic changes in bottom current strength. Supply of sediment to the benthic nepheloid layer was by entrainment ofmud from turbidity currents, and by settling ofpelagic material (biogenic grains, IRD, sediment suspended in meltwater plumes). Cyclic changes in sediment supply include more biogenic supply in interglacials with less sea ice cover, more terrigenous supply from turbidites in glacials with ice sheets grounded to the shelf edge, and changes in IRD content.

La presente tesis est a centrada en dos temas principales: el primero abarca el primer cap tulo y el segundo se divide entre los cap tulos dos y tres. En el primer cap tulo estudio un problema que apareci o como tal hace relativamente poco tiempo (aunque ya en la segunda mitad del pasado siglo se publicaron una serie de resultados que, con la terminolog a adecuada, estar an englobados dentro de esta teor a). Nos interesaremos en la b usqueda de estructuras algebraicas (como espacios vectoriales, algebras, espacios de Banach) contenidas en subconjuntos de funciones cuyos elementos (con la posible excepci on del elemento nulo) veri can ciertas propiedades anti-intuitivas (propiedades de dif cil visualizaci on). Ello nos puede conducir a la idea de c omo la intuci on puede enga~narnos, y sugerir que, aunque se haya dedicado una ingente cantidad de esfuerzo y tiempo para encontrar un unico ejemplo que veri que tales propiedades, y dicho trabajo pueda dar la idea de que no existen muchos m as espec menes de similares caracter sticas, de hecho existen ejemplares su cientes como para construir espacios \grandes" cuyos elementos (salvo el cero) satisfacen las mismas propiedades. This thesis details the top-down fabrication of nanostructures on Si and Ge substrates by electron beam lithography (EBL). Various polymeric resist materials were used to create nanopatterns by EBL and Chapter 1 discusses the development characteristics of these resists. Chapter 3 describes the processing parameters, resolution and topographical and structural changes of a new EBL resist known as ‘SML’. A comparison between SML and the standard resists PMMA and ZEP520A was undertaken to determine the suitability of SML as an EBL resist. It was established that SML is capable of high-resolution patterning and showed good pattern transfer capabilities. Germanium is a desirable material for use in microelectronic applications due to a number of superior qualities over silicon. EBL patterning of Ge with high-resolution hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) resist is however difficult due to the presence of native surface oxides. Thus, to combat this problem a new technique for passivating Ge surfaces prior to EBL processes is detailed in Chapter 4. The surface passivation was carried out using simple acids like citric acid and acetic acid. The acids were gentle on the surface and enabled the formation of high-resolution arrays of Ge nanowires using HSQ resist. Chapter 5 details the directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers (BCPs) on EBL patterned Si and, for the very first time, Ge surfaces. DSA of BCPs on template substrates is a promising technology for high volume and cost effective nanofabrication. The BCP employed for this study was poly (styrene-b-ethylene oxide) and the substrates were pre-defined by HSQ templates produced by EBL. The DSA technique resulted into pattern rectification (ordering in BCP) and in pattern multiplication within smaller areas.

El objetivo del artículo es analizar algunos aspectos de los orígenes de la “política cultural” estadounidense en Argentina. La atención se concentrará en el pasaje desde las declaraciones del presidente Hoover, que contribuyeron a favorecer un clima útil y propicio a la intensificación de los intercambios, a los primeros pasos concretos realizados en el periodo de la presidencia de Roosevelt. Se tratará, en particular, de individualizar las características de la cooperación establecida entre organismos estadounidenses y argentinos para favorecer la proyección cultural estadounidense en el país y el intercambio cultural entre Estados Unidos y Argentina, donde se iba intensificando la difusión de un sentimiento anti-imperialista, y que era entonces objetivo de formas de propaganda particularmente agresivas por parte de los regímenes totalitarios.

We give a new proof that for a finite group G, the category of rational G-equivariant spectra is Quillen equivalent to the product of the model categories of chain complexes of modules over the rational group ring of the Weyl group of H in G, as H runs over the conjugacy classes of subgroups of G. Furthermore, the Quillen equivalences of our proof are all symmetric monoidal. Thus we can understand categories of algebras or modules over a ring spectrum in terms of the algebraic model.

We present criteria for unital elementary operators (of small length) on unital semisimple Banach algebras to be spectral isometries. The surjective ones among them turn out to be algebra automorphisms.
