Today, the trend within the electronics industry is for the use of rapid and advanced simulation methodologies in association with synthesis toolsets. This paper presents an approach developed to support mixed-signal circuit design and analysis. The methodology proposed shows a novel approach to the problem of developing behvioural model descriptions of mixed-signal circuit topologies, by construction of a set of subsystems, that supports the automated mapping of MATLAB®/SIMULINK® models to structural VHDL-AMS descriptions. The tool developed, named MS 2SV, reads a SIMULINK® model file and translates it to a structural VHDL-AMS code. It also creates the file structure required to simulate the translated model in the System Vision™. To validate the methodology and the developed program, the DAC08, AD7524 and AD5450 data converters were studied and initially modelled in MATLAB®/ SIMULINK®. The VHDL-AMS code generated automatically by MS 2SV, (MATLAB®/SIMULINK® to System Vision™), was then simulated in the System Vision™. The simulation results show that the proposed approach, which is based on VHDL-AMS descriptions of the original model library elements, allows for the behavioural level simulation of complex mixed-signal circuits.

Aging is associated with decline in muscle mass and strength and reduced bone density. Age-related bone loss is a primary factor in osteoporosis and all individuals are potential candidates for osteoporosis because bone loss with aging occurs in men and women, but less studied in men. To examine the appropriateness of hindlimb elevation, by tail suspension as a model for diminished mechanical loading, and to determine the influence of age on bone responsiveness to skeletal unloading, we use dual X ray absorptiometry (DXA) and digital radiographic images to analyze the response of the femur from mature rats to biomechanical loads. Femurs from male Wistar rats (9-mo-old) were scanned using DXA and DIGORA and measures obtained in ephipyseal and diaphyseal regions of interest. The mechanical testing was divided into compression load to fracture the head and a three-point bending load to fracture the femur middiaphysis. In femoral epiphysis from hindlimb unload (HU), animals presented significant differences between mineral bone content and density assessed by DXA. Detailed regions of femoral epiphysis (head, throcanteric fossa, throcanter and metaphysis) presented significant lower values from radiographic density. Only compressive load necessary to fracture the femoral head neck was also significantly diminished in HU animals. Disuse induced, as in elderly patients, deterioration of the trabecular bone architecture with critical effect on bone fragility. Rats with 21 days of hindlimb unloading can simulate disuse, suggesting that certain sub-regions of their aging bones are more susceptible to fracture, while other, i.e. diaphyses, are not.

The digital image processing has been applied in several areas, especially where it is necessary use tools for feature extraction and to get patterns of the studied images. In an initial stage, the segmentation is used to separate the image in parts that represents a interest object, that may be used in a specific study. There are several methods that intends to perform such task, but is difficult to find a method that can easily adapt to different type of images, that often are very complex or specific. To resolve this problem, this project aims to presents a adaptable segmentation method, that can be applied to different type of images, providing an better segmentation. The proposed method is based in a model of automatic multilevel thresholding and considers techniques of group histogram quantization, analysis of the histogram slope percentage and calculation of maximum entropy to define the threshold. The technique was applied to segment the cell core and potential rejection of tissue in myocardial images of biopsies from cardiac transplant. The results are significant in comparison with those provided by one of the best known segmentation methods available in the literature. © 2010 IEEE.

The contemporary individual finds on the Internet and especially on the Web facilitating conditions to build a basic infrastructure based on the concept of commons. He also finds favorable conditions which allow him to collaborate and share resources for the creation, use, reuse, access and dissemination of information. However, he also faces obstacles such as Copyright (Law 9610/98 in Brazil). An alternative is Creative Commons which not only allows the elaboration, use and dissemination of information under legal conditions but also function as a facilitator for the development of informational commons. This paper deals with this scenario.

Based on literature review, electronic systems design employ largely top-down methodology. The top-down methodology is vital for success in the synthesis and implementation of electronic systems. In this context, this paper presents a new computational tool, named BD2XML, to support electronic systems design. From a block diagram system of mixed-signal is generated object code in XML markup language. XML language is interesting because it has great flexibility and readability. The BD2XML was developed with object-oriented paradigm. It was used the AD7528 converter modeled in MATLAB / Simulink as a case study. The MATLAB / Simulink was chosen as a target due to its wide dissemination in academia and industry. From this case study it is possible to demonstrate the functionality of the BD2XML and make it a reflection on the design challenges. Therefore, an automatic tool for electronic systems design reduces the time and costs of the design.

Gesture-based applications have particularities, since users interact in a natural way, much as they interact in the non-digital world. Hence, new requirements are needed on the software design process. This paper shows a software development process model for these applications, including requirement specification, design, implementation, and testing procedures. The steps and activities of the proposed model were tested through a game case study, which is a puzzle game. The puzzle is completed when all pieces of a painting are correctly positioned by the drag and drop action of users hand gesture. It also shows the results obtained of applying a heuristic evaluation on this game. © 2012 IEEE.

A transmission line digital model is developed direct in the phase and time domains. The successive modal transformations considered in the three-phase representation are simplified and then the proposed model can be easily applied to several operation condition based only on the previous knowing of the line parameters, without a thorough theoretical knowledge of modal analysis. The proposed model is also developed based on lumped elements, providing a complete current and voltage profile at any point of the transmission system. This model makes possible the modeling of non-linear power devices and electromagnetic phenomena along the transmission line using simple electric circuit components, representing a great advantage when compared to several models based on distributed parameters and inverse transforms. In addition, an efficient integration method is proposed to solve the system of differential equations resulted from the line modeling by lumped elements, thereby making possible simulations of transient and steady state using a wide and constant integration step. © 2012 IEEE.
Digital filtering of oscillations intrinsic to transmission line modeling based on lumped parameters
Resumo:
A correction procedure based on digital signal processing theory is proposed to smooth the numeric oscillations in electromagnetic transient simulation results from transmission line modeling based on an equivalent representation by lumped parameters. The proposed improvement to this well-known line representation is carried out with an Finite Impulse Response (FIR) digital filter used to exclude the high-frequency components associated with the spurious numeric oscillations. To prove the efficacy of this correction method, a well-established frequency-dependent line representation using state equations is modeled with an FIR filter included in the model. The results obtained from the state-space model with and without the FIR filtering are compared with the results simulated by a line model based on distributed parameters and inverse transforms. Finally, the line model integrated with the FIR filtering is also tested and validated based on simulations that include nonlinear and time-variable elements. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Surface defects are extremely important in mechanical characterization of several different materials. Therefore, the analysis of surface finishing is essential for a further simulation of surface mechanical properties in a customized project in materials science and technology. One of the methods commonly employed for such purpose is the statistical mapping of different sample surface regions using the depth from focus technique. The analysis is usually performed directly from the elevation maps which are obtained from the digital image processing. In this paper, the possibility of quantifying the surface heterogeneity of Silicon Carbide porous ceramics by elevation map histograms is presented. The advantage of this technique is that it allows the qualitative or quantitative verification of all surface image fields that cannot be done by using the Surface Plot plugin of image J™ platform commonly used in digital image processing. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
