The synchronous fluorescence spectra of hemoglobin solutions are reported for the first rime. The main fluorescence peaks observed in the spectra are assigned. The effect of the concentration of hemoglobin solution on the spectra is studied. Characteristic fluorescence peaks due to the dimer and tetramer of hemoglobin molecules are recognized. A new Er(III)-Na(I) coordination polymer of stoichiometry [NaEr2L5(H2O)(6)(NO3)](NO3). 3.5H(2)O (HL = picolinic acid N-oxide) has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Crystals are triclinic, P (1) over bar with a = 9.823(2), b = 12.453(2), c = 20.643(4) Angstrom; alpha = 98.49(3), beta = 101.40(3), gamma = 108.69(3)degrees; V = 2284(1) Angstrom(3); Z = 2. Of the two independent eight-coordinate erbium(III) ions in this complex, one is surrounded by four bidentate chelating L ligands, and the other by one bidentate chelating L ligand, four aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two neighboring [ErL4] units. The sodium(I) ion is in a distorted octahedral environment, being coordinated by a unidentate nitrate anion, three aqua ligands and two anti-carboxylate oxygen atoms from two adjacent [ErL4] units. The complex is built from zigzag chains of syn-anti carboxylate-bridged erbium(III) moieties directed in the a direction, which are cross-linked pairwise by aqua-bridged dimeric sodium(I) units. The resulting composite polymeric chains are further connected by hydrogen bonds to form a three-dimensional network.

Polyaniline (PAn) with different molecular weight was prepared by adding organic solvents such as acetone, ethanol or THF into the polymerization mixture. Open-circuit potential measurements showed that the polymerization rate was lowered by the addition of the organic solvent Spectral studies showed that PAn intermediate before the oxidant was consumed was pernigraniline and it was reduced to emeraldine base rapidly by aniline in the termination period. A mechanism of chain propagation was proposed. Chain propagation and autoacceleration period were almost independent of addition of pernigraniline, and the autoacceleration of aniline polymerization is due to more rapid initiation rate. A novel polymeric Pr(III) complex with a new double betaine, namely [{Pr(L-1)(1.5)(H2O)(2)}(n)] [ClOli4]3(n). nH(2)O (1) (L-1= 1,4-diazoniobicyclo[2,2,2]octane- 1,4-dipropionate), has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray analysis. In the title complex, the Pr(III) atom is nine-coordinated by seven oxygen atoms from five L-1 ligands and two aqua ligands. Each pair of adjacent praseodymium(III) atoms is linked by a pair of mu(3) chelating and bridging carboxylate groups, thus forming an infinite metal metal chain running parallel to the a direction, and such chains are cross-linked by flexible backbones of L-1 ligands into a three-dimensional network with the perchlorate anions and lattice water molecules accommodated in the interstitial space. The title complex crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 8.085(2), b = 14.316(3), c = 29.775(6) Angstrom, beta = 103.04(3)degrees and Z = 4.

The catalytic oxidation of cyclohexene to cyclohexanone using Pd(OAc)(2)/HQ/FePc was investigated in an acidic aqueous solution of acetonitrile. The role of each component of this system in the oxidation of cyclohexene was explored by means of UV-VIS, IR, XPS spectroscopy and. cyclic voltammetry, respectively. Based on the experimental results, the mechanism of the oxidation of cyclohexene catalyzed by Pd(OAc)(2)/HQ/FePc was elucidated.

Cobalt(II)-cyanoferrate polymeric film has been electrochemically deposited on a glassy carbon electrode and investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in-situ reflection FTIR spectroscopy. A reorientation of the terminal C=N groups upon redox reactions was proposed. The stretching vibration mode of the terminal C=N groups associated with Fe(III) was observed at 2122 cm(-1), however, the stretching vibration mode for terminal groups associated with Fe(II) did not appear. This process could result in a switch between lattice-closed and lattice-opened surface structure. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.

The reaction of diglycolic acid, O(CH2CO2H)(2), with Cu(NO3)(2) . H2O and lanthanoid nitrate hydrate produces a series of novel Ln-Cu mixed metal complexes, [Ln(2)CU(3){O(CH2CO2)(2)}(6)]. nH(2)O (Ln = La, Nd, n = 9; Ln = Er, n = 6), which have been characterized by elemental analysis, i.r. spectroscopy, magnetic measurements and X-ray crystallography. The Ln(3+) and Cu2+ ions are connected by the carboxylate groups of the ligands, resulting in the formation of a complicated network.

Heteropoly acids (HPAs), such as dodecatungstosilicic acid (SiW12), adsorb strongly on to activated carbons. The surface chemical properties of the activated carbons have a pronounced effect on the adsorption of HPAs. To obtain activated carbons with the desired surface chemical properties, modification with mineral acids has been applied. The adsorption isotherms of SiW12 from aqueous solution and various acidic media on to the various carbons have been studied. On the basis of the results obtained, an adsorption model for HPAs from acidic media is presented.

The electrochemical behavior of Dawson-type P2W18O626- adsorbed on a glassy carbon electrode and doped in a polypyrrole film electrode was described. These modified electrodes all display catalytic activity for nitrite reduction, either in acid solutions or in pH > 4.0 solutions.

In various acidic media, such as H2SO4, HCl, H3PO4, acetic acid of 3 M in hydrogen ion concentration, and pure acetic acid, the adsorption of heteropolyacids composed of molybdenum with the Keggin structures PMo12 and SiMo12 on different activated carbons is studied. In acidic media, the adsorbed amount of heteropolyacids is much higher than that in water. By considering the relation between adsorbed amount and the acid strength of the media, as far as SiMo12 and PMo12 are concerned, there exist different trends.

The voltammetric behavior of the titled compound (denoted as Nd (SiMo7W4)(2)(13-)) in aqueous solution had been studied. An unusual pH response was discussed. The adsorption of the anion on the dropping mercury electrode and a self-inhibition influence of the adsorbed anions on the redox process of those anions dissolved in solution were found. The electrocatalytic effects of the anion on the bromate reduction were investigated.

The electrochemical behavior of the title compound (denoted Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)(13-)) in aqueous solution has been studied using cyclic voltammetry, sampled d.c. voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry and bulk electrolysis with coulometry, The stable pH range of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)(13-) is determined with UV-visible spectra. In the potential range between 0.70 and -0.45 V vs. SCE, the anion in pH 3.8 aqueous solution undergoes one-, one-, two- and two-electron steps of four redox processes attributed to electron addition and removal from the molybdate-oxo framework. The adsorption of the anion on the dropping mercury electrode and a self-inhibition influence of the adsorbed anions on the redox process of those anions dissolved in solution are found. The unusual dependence of the formal potentials on pH is explained with the competition of the protonation and ion-pair formation due to the high negative charge of Nd(SiMo7W4)(2)(13-) and its reduced forms. The electrocatalytic effects of the anion on the bromate are investigated.

The aqueous complexation of lanthanide complexes of citrate in pH 7.4 solutions has been studied by using lanthanide-induced shift and relaxation times measurement methods. These results indicate that citrate coordinate via 3-hydroxyl and 3-carboxylate groups with lanthanide ions and form 1:2 (Ln/cit) isostructural complexes through lanthanide series. We suggest a new coordination geometry which is different from that described in literature.

W-183 NMR spectra were obtained for [La(AsW11O39)(2)](11-), [La(As2W17O61)(2)](17-), [La(SiW9Mo2O39)(2)](13-), [LaSb9W21O86](16-), [LaAs4W40O140](25-) and alpha-, beta-[(CeO)(3) . (SiW9O34)(2)](14-) complexes, Tungsten NMR studies showed that the C-s symmetry of the square antiprism for [La(ASW(11)O(39))(2)](11-) and [La(As2W17O61)(2)](17-) anions keep constant in aqueous solution; the lanthanide accupied the central S-1 site in [LnSb(9)W(21)O(86)](16-) and [LnAs(4)W(40)O(140)](25-) complexes, respectively, and lanthanide metal cations gave [(CeO)(3) . (SiW9O34)(3)](14-) type of complexes with SiW9O3410-.

The aqueous complexation of lanthanide ions with citrate in pH 7.4 solution has been investigated with use of the lanthanide-induced shift and paramagnetic relaxation rate enhancement methods. The results show that citrate coordinates via hydroxyl and central carboxylate groups with lanthanide ions and forms 1:2 (Ln/cit) isostructural complexes through the lanthanide series. A new possible coordination geometry deduced from our experimental data is suggested and discussed.
