Optical processing devices based on a-SiCH multilayer architectures

Red, green and blue optical signals were directed to an a-SiC:H multilayered device, each one with a specific transmission rate. The combined optical signal was analyzed by reading out, under different applied voltages, the generated photocurrent. Results show that when a chromatic time dependent wavelength combination with different transmission rates irradiates the multilayered structure, the device operates as a tunable wavelength filter and can be used in wavelength division multiplexing systems for short range communications. a-SiCH Based Devices as Optical Demultiplexers

In this paper we present results on the use of a multilayered a-SiC:H heterostructure as a wavelength-division demultiplexing device (WDM) for the visible light spectrum. The WDM device is a glass/ITO/a-SiC:H (p-i-n)/ a-SiC:H(-p) /Si:H(-i)/SiC:H (-n)/ITO heterostructure in which the generated photocurrent at different values of the applied bias can be assigned to the different optical signals. The device was characterized through spectral response measurements, under different electrical bias. Demonstration of the device functionality for WDM applications was done with three different input channels covering wavelengths within the visible range. The recovery of the input channels is explained using the photocurrent spectral dependence on the applied voltage. The influence of the optical power density was also analysed. An electrical model, supported by a numerical simulation explains the device operation. Short range optical communications constitute the major application field, however other applications are also foreseen.

Os (in)sofismáveis caminhos do storytelling : Woody Allen e o documentário ficcionado

ABSTRACT: Between pure documentary and pure fiction there are, more and more, a reasonable number of cinematic alternatives that convey a dimension of non-reality. Between the pointedly factual discourse and the irrational belief in an entirely narrative world, there intervenes an informed conviction in a truthful but nonexistent universe, in which the formal enunciation sells an image of objectivity. In a path that leads us from the forms and contents of reflexive and performative documentaries, according to Bill Nichols, and ends up in fake documentary itself, we will have the opportunity to stress the filmic construction and its inherent narrative purpose, be it a fictional story or the creator himself as character (others would say subject) of the cinematic construct. In a boomerang kind of logic, the more the objects direct us to a referent, the more they restore us a creative/authorial reference and, along with it, the narrative idea that instills it. In Woody Allen’s case, this storytelling manifests itself in the fake documentary genre, which works as if it is the reality, only to better manifest the sole reality that interests the director: that of the metacinema, or the cinema as self-referencial reality. The practical examples will be derived from the following films: Take the Money and Run (1969) e Husbands and Wives (1992).

Handgrip strength

The basic function of the human hand is the manipulation and grasping of various objects in all daily activities, including work activities. This is greatly influenced by strength and manual dexterity. However age, gender and other contexts such as work or leisure activities could influence strength. Handgrip strength, a measure of maximum voluntary force of the hand, has proved to be reliable and valid as an objective parameter to evaluate the functional integrity of the hand as part of the musculoskeletal system. It correlates highly with strength in other muscular groups and is therefore considered as a good indicator of overall muscular strength and functional stress and could be used as a predictor of physical disability. Handgrip strength assessment is simple and reliable and used commonly by several investigators and health professionals, in different contexts (medical, nutritional, rehabilitation, professional settings, engineering, etc.) and with different purposes (research, diagnostic, assessment, etc.). In clinical and rehabilitation settings is of vital importance in the determination of effectiveness of several interventions and for monitoring evolution of diseases. Various ways (methods, techniques and equipments) of collecting information on grip strength have been reported. This chapter will review basic concepts on handgrip function, methodologies of assessment, contexts of application and correlates, such as physical activity, health or nutritional status. Several populations and reference values as also the relationships between handgrip and clinical status, aging, risk of disability and diseases, will be discussed.

Propomo-nos, com este artigo, mapear os principais desafios e linhas de pesquisa que marcam hoje os estudos sobre o jornalismo. Desta forma, tentaremos estimular os estudantes de jornalismo, e não só, a eleger as suas linhas de pesquisa e objectos de análise para a elaboração dos projectos de licenciatura e também para futuras incursões académicas, nomeadamente sob a forma de mestrados e doutoramentos.

Mathematical education and interdisciplinarity : promoting public awareness of mathematics in the Azores

Mathematical literacy in Portugal is very unsatisfactory in what concerns international standards. Even more disturbingly, the Azores archipelago ranks as one of the worst regions of Portugal in this respect. We reason that the popularisation of Mathematics through interactive exhibitions and activities can contribute actively to disseminate mathematical knowledge, increase awareness of the importance of Mathematics in today’s world and change its negative perception by the majority of the citizens. Although a significant investment has been undertaken by the local regional government in creating several science centres for the popularisation of Science, there is no centre for the popularisation of Mathematics. We present our first steps towards bringing Mathematics to unconventional settings by means of hands-on activities. We describe in some detail three activities. One activity has to do with applying trigonometry to measure distances in Astronomy, which can also be applied to Earth objects. Another activity concerns the presence of numerical patterns in the Azorean flora. The third activity explores geometrical patterns in the Azorean cultural heritage. It is our understanding that the implementation of these and other easy-to-follow and challenging activities will contribute to the awareness of the importance and beauty of Mathematics.

ONET – Observatório Nacional da Educação em Turismo. A importância da tecnologia na educação em turismo

Esta tese pretende fazer um estudo sobre a influência que a evolução tecnológica tem, de forma direta e indireta, sobre a educação em turismo. Os fatores indiretos (fornecedores turísticos, agências…) acabam por ter o maior peso devido às constantes evoluções que sofrem para poderem dar um serviço cada vez melhor aos seus clientes. A ideia surgiu da necessidade de elaboração de um modelo para a reformulação do portal do Observatório Nacional de Educação em Turismo (ONET), cujo planeamento e parte da implementação decorreu numa parte mais prática da tese. Os pontos principais da reformulação do portal passaram pela modificação do seu design, elaboração de um repositório de objetos de aprendizagem e de uma rede social. A propósito do repositório, decidiu-se elaborar também um objeto de aprendizagem sobre o tema “A História do Turismo no Mundo”. Toda esta evolução tecnológica, que se tem verificado nos últimos anos, veio agilizar muitos procedimentos, sendo necessários profissionais qualificados. É aqui que entra o papel das escolas. Têm de se adaptar em termos de utilização das mais recentes tecnologias, nomeadamente software. Algumas empresas produtoras de software desenvolvem também simuladores que são utilizados nas escolas para um ensino semelhante ao que será a futura vida profissional.

Recursos educativos aplicados à medicina dentária

Com a crescente associação dos meios tecnológicos aos métodos de ensino, tem-se vindo a verificar uma mudança significativa na forma como o aluno adquire o conhecimento. Os meios digitais tornaram-se num meio cada vez mais apetecível para os alunos e para os professores, que vêem no suporte tecnológico um precioso complemento para utilizar nas suas aulas. O aparecimento do ensino à distância e mais recentemente do e-learning, veio revolucionar a forma como se adquire o conhecimento, deixando de ser importante a hora e o local aonde nos encontramos. Com estes novos tipos de ensino, surgem também os novos tipos de recursos disponíveis. Uns dos recursos tecnológicos em destaque na actualidade são os Objectos de Aprendizagem (OA), pequenos pedaços de informação que podem ser utilizados, reutilizados ou referenciados no apoio tecnológico à aprendizagem. Analisados os conceitos e as características dos OA foi efectuado o levantamento do estado da arte e feito um estudo sobre recursos educativos utilizados na área da Medicina Dentária, sendo realizada uma análise a cada um desses recursos, observando as suas carências e os seus pontos fortes. Posteriormente partiu-se para a realização de um OA que possa servir como suporte ao ensino da Medicina Dentária, mais concretamente sobre a realização de incisões e de suturas durante cirurgias dentárias. A sua validação revelou ser possível a reutilização em diferentes contextos de ensino e aprendizagem.
