Acicular monodispersed Fe1-xREx (RE= Nd, Sm,Eu,Tb;x=0, 0.05, 0.10) metallic nanoparticles (60 +/- 5 nm in length and axial ratio similar to6) obtained by reduction of alumina-coated goethite nanoparticles-containing rare earth (RE) under hydrogen flow are reported. Alumina and maghemite thin layers on particle surface were used to protect the goethite particles against sintering and oxidation, respectively. Al and RE additions were obtained by successive heterocoagulation reactions. Aluminum sulfate (10 at.% based on Fe) was dissolved in water and the pH adjusted to 12.5 with NaOH solution. Goethite particles were suspended in this solution and CO2 gas was blown into the slurry to neutralize it to a pH 8.5 or less. Particles were purified and dehydrated to effect transformation to alumina-coated hematite nanoparticles, which were re-suspended in aqueous solution in which RE sulfate (0-0.15 at.% based on Fe) has been dissolved, and the pH increased by ammonia aqueous solution addition. Resulted alumina-coated RE-doped hematite nanoparticles were reduced to metal at 450 degreesC/12 h under hydrogen flow and passivated with nitrogen-containing ethanol vapor at room temperature. Acicular monodispersed metallic nanoparticle systems were obtained and the presence of Al and RE were confirmed by induced-coupled plasma spectrometry analysis. X-ray diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and magnetization data are in agreement with the nanosized alpha-Fe core in a bcc structure, having a spinel structure, gammaFe(2)O(3), with thickness similar to1.5 run on particle surface. Main magnetic parameters showed saturation magnetization decreases and significant increasing in the coercive field with the RE composition increases. Magnetic properties of these particles, similar to40% smaller than those commercially available, suggest a decrease in the bit-size for high-density magnetic or magneto-optics recording media application. Transparent glasses were synthesized in the NaPO3-BaF2 WO3 tertiary system and several structural characterizations were performed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) at the tungsten L-I and L-III absorption edges and by Raman spectroscopy. Special attention was paid to the coordination state of tungsten atoms in the vitreous network.XANES investigations showed that tungsten atoms are only six-fold coordinated (octahedra WO6) and that these glasses are free of tungstate tetrahedra (WO4).In addition, Raman spectroscopy allowed to identify a break in the linear phosphate chains as the amount of WO3 increases and the formation of P-O-W bonds in the vitreous network indicating the modifier behavior of WO6 octahedra in the glass network. Based on XANES data, we suggested a new attribution of several Raman absorption bands which allowed to identify the presence of W-O- and W=O terminal bonds and a progressive apparition of W-O-W bridging bonds for the most WO3 concentrated samples (≥ 30% molar) due to the formation of WO6 clusters. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Nominally pure Gd2O3 C-form structure from basic carbonate fine spherical particles and its differences concerning the XRD data among literature patterns using Rietveld method is reported. Gd2O3: Eu3+ from basic carbonate and Gd2O3 from oxalate were also investigated. All samples, except the one from oxalate precursor, are narrow sized, 100-200 nm. Only non-doped Gd2O3 from basic carbonate presents XRD data with smaller d(hkl) values than the literature ones. From Rietveld refinement, non-doped Gd2O3 from basic carbonate has the smallest crystallite size and from oxalate shows the greatest one. Also, the unit cell parameters indicate a plan contraction of the Gd2O3 from basic carbonate. The presence of Eu3+ increases crystallite size when basic carbonate precursor is used to prepare Gd2O3 and avoids plan contraction. The structural differences observed among Gd2O3 samples obtained are related to the type of precursor and to the presence or not of doping ion. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. (USA). All rights reserved.

Results of differential scanning calometry (DSC), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and F-19 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of InF3-based glasses, treated at different temperatures, ranging from glass transition temperature (T-g) to crystallization temperature (T-c), are reported. The main features of the experimental results are as follows. DSC analysis emphasizes several steps in the crystallization process. Heat treatment at temperatures above T-g enhances the nucleation of the first growing phases but has little influence on the following ones. XRD results show that several crystalline phases are formed, with solid state transitions when heated above 680 K, the F-19 NMR results show that the spin-lattice relaxation, for the glass samples heat treated above 638 K, is described by two time constants. For samples treated below this temperature a single time constant T-1 was observed. Measurements of the F-19 spin-lattice relaxation time (T-1), as a function of temperature, made possible the identification of the mobile fluoride ions. The activation energy, for the ionic motion, in samples treated at crystallization temperature was found to be 0.18 +/- 0.01 eV. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Thermogravimetry, cyclic voltammetry and other analytical techniques were used to study the reactions of mercury with pure iridium. The results allowed to suggest when subjected to heat or anodic stripping voltammetry an electrodeposited mercury film reacts with Ir substrate and at least three mass loss steps and three peaks appear in the mercury desorption process. The first two were attributed to Hg(0) species removal like a mercury bulk and a mercury monolayer. The last can be ascribed to the mercury removal from a solid solution with iridium.

Solid-state Ln(L)(3) compounds, where Ln stands for trivalent Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and Y, and L is 3-methoxybenzoate, have been synthesized. X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy, complexometry and elemental analysis were used to characterize the compounds. In order to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used. The results provided information on the composition, dehydration, polymorphic transformation, thermal stability and thermal decomposition of the synthesized compounds.
