Clinical and mycological study of scalp white piedra in the State of Paraíba, Brazil

White piedra is a superficial mycoses characterized by nodules on the hair shaft, caused by the basidiomycetous yeasts. In the present study, clinical and mycological findings of scalp white piedra caused by Trichosporon spp. are related. Twenty three cases of scalp white piedra were observed with a high incidence in women (87%) and preschool children from 2 to 6 (74%) years old. These groups presented a relationship of dependence with this infection. Despite the low socio-economic status, poor standards of hygiene, (48% of the patients) as well as the fact that 30.4% of the children shared the same nursery, these factors were not significant for the transmission of the mycosis. These were the first reports of scalp white piedra in João Pessoa city, Paraíba, Brazil.

Rêves: visions révélatrices. Réception et interprétation des songes en contexte religieux

La question du rêve est part intégrante de la question de la religion et intéresse de ce fait au plus haut point l'histoire comparée des religions. Non seulement les rêves ont-ils souvent été à l'origine d'une religion, mais ils sont fréquemment un de ses vecteurs principaux. En incluant la dimension onirique comme un élément constitutif du religieux et en développant des méthodes pour l'investiguer, le présent ouvrage se propose de montrer le lien consubstantiel entre religion et rêve. Les études réunies sont issues du colloque Rêves, visions révélatrices: réception et interprétation des songes dans le contexte religieux qui a eu lieu à Lausanne les 7 et 8 décembre 2000. Neither Private nor Public: The Effects of Communal Provision of Water on Child Health in Peru

The literature on local services has focused on the effects of privatization and, if anything, has compared the effects of private and mixed public-private systems versus public provision. However, alternative forms of provision such as cooperatives, which can be very prevalent in many developing countries, have been completely ignored. In this paper, we investigate the effects of communal water provison (Comités Vecinales and Juntas Administrativas de Servicios de Saneamiento) on child health in Peru. Using detailed survey data at the household- and child-level for the years 2006-2010, we exploit the cross-section variability to assess the differential impact of this form of provision. Despite controlling for a wide range of household and local characteristics, the municipalities served by communal organizations are more likely to have poorer health indicators, what would result in a downward bias on the absolute magnitude of the effect of cooperatives. We rely on an instrumental variable strategy to deal with this potential endogeneity problem, and use the personnel resources and the administrative urban/rural classi fication of the municipalities as instruments for the provision type. The results show a negative and signi cant effect of comunal water provision on diarrhea among under- five year old children. Keywords: water utilities, cooperatives, child health, regulation, Peru. Call for Submissions: White Paper on Universal Health Insurance - Supporting Documents

  The Department of Health has published a White Paper on Universal Health Insurance. The White Paper sets out in detail the elements of the proposed Universal Health Insurance model for Ireland. As such, it provides detail on the overall design of the model, the proposed system for deciding on the standard package of services and the financing mechanisms for the system. This is a most fundamental reform of the health system and we recognise the importance of consulting extensively and inclusively with all interested parties.  It is important to seek your views on the policy as it is set out in the White Paper, and we view this as a valuable opportunity for citizens to contribute to the development of policy on the future of their health system.  Therefore, we would like to hear from any individual, group, organisation or other body that wishes to contribute to the consultation on the White Paper. In particular, but not limited to, we would welcome your views on the following issues: A consultation document setting out a number of key questions under each of the above headings has been developed and can be downloaded here. There is an opportunity at the end of the document for views or comments on other aspects of the White Paper to be provided. Alternatively, additional views or comments can be sent as an email or hard copy to the addresses below. It is intended to establish a separate independent Expert Commission to examine the issues around the basket of services to be provided under UHI and within the overall health system. The Minister will announce details of the Commission in the near future. Therefore, it would be useful if the submissions on the White Paper refrained from commenting in detail on the services to be provided under UHI. Views on the basket of services will be sought by the Commission when it commences its consultation process. The Path to Universal Healthcare: White Paper on Universal Health Insurance

  The Government is committed to ending the unfair, unequal and inefficient two-tier health system and to introducing a single-tier system, supported by universal health insurance The Government will achieve a single-tier system via a multi-payer model of universal health insurance (UHI), in line with the Programme for Government (PfG), involving competing private health insurers and a State-owned VHI.
