Four volcanic ash-bearing marine sediment cores and one ash-free reference core were examined during research cruise RV Meteor 54/2 offshore Nicaragua and Costa Rica to investigate the chemical composition of pore waters related to volcanic ash alteration. Sediments were composed of terrigenous matter derived from the adjacent continent and contained several distinct ash layers. Biogenic opal and carbonate were only minor components. The terrigenous fraction was mainly composed of smectite and other clay minerals while the pore water composition was strongly affected by the anaerobic degradation of particulate organic matter via microbial sulphate reduction. The alteration of volcanic matter showed only a minor effect on major element concentrations in pore waters. This is in contrast to prior studies based on long sediment cores taken during the DSDP, where deep sediments always showed distinct signs of volcanic ash alteration. The missing signal of ash alteration is probably caused by low reaction rates and the high background concentration of major dissolved ions in the seawater-derived pore fluids. Dissolved silica concentrations were, however, significantly enriched in ash-bearing cores and showed no relation to the low but variable contents of biogenic opal. Hence, the data suggest that silica concentrations were enhanced by ash dissolution. Thus, the dissolved silica profile measured in one of the sediment cores was used to derive the in-situ dissolution rate of volcanic glass particles in marine sediments. A non-steady state model was run over a period of 43 kyr applying a constant pH of 7.30 and a dissolved Al concentration of 0.05 ?M. The kinetic constant (AA) was varied systematically to fit the model to the measured dissolved silica-depth profile. The best fit to the data was obtained applying AA = 1.3 * 10**-U9 mol of Si/cm**2/ s. This in-situ rate of ash dissolution at the seafloor is three orders of magnitude smaller than the rate of ash dissolution determined in previous laboratory experiments. Our results therefore imply that field investigations are necessary to accurately predict natural dissolution rates of volcanic glasses in marine sediments.

In order to examine the long-term development of offshore macrozoobenthic soft-bottom communities of the German Bight, four representative permanent stations (MZB-SSd, -FSd, -Slt, -WB) have been sampled continuously since 1969. Inter-annual variability and possible long-term trends were analysed based on spring-time samples from 1969 until 2000. This is part of the ecological long-term series of the AWI and is supplemented by periodic large-scale mapping of the benthos. The main factors influencing the development of the benthic communities are biological interactions, climate, food supply (eutrophication) and the disturbance regime. The most frequent disturbances are sediment relocations during strong storms or by bottom trawling, while occasional oxygen deficiencies and extremely cold winters are important disturbance events working on a much larger scale. Benthic communities at the sampling stations show a large inter-annual variability combined with a variation on a roughly decadal scale. In accordance with large-scale system shifts reported for the North Sea, benthic community transitions occurred between roughly the 1970ies, 80ies and 90ies. The transitions between periods are not distinctly marked by strong changes but rather reflected in gradual changes of the species composition and dominance structure.

The intertidal and subtidal soft bottom macro- and meiofauna of a glacier fjord on Spitsbergen was studied after complete ice melt in June 2003. The abundances of the benthic fauna were within the range reported from estuaries and similar intertidal areas of boreal regions. The high proportion of juveniles in the eulittoral zone indicated larval recruitment from subtidal areas. The macrobenthic fauna can be divided into an intertidal and a subtidal community, both being numerically dominated by annelids. Deposit feeders were numerically predominant in intertidal sites, whereas suspension feeders were most abundant in the subtidal area. Among the meiofauna, only the benthic copepods were identified to species, revealing ecological adaptations typical for intertidal species elsewhere.

Despite its extreme aridity the Badain Jaran Desert is rich in groundwater. In the southeastern part of this desert it is characterized by coexistence of high megadunes and a great number of lakes. Deuterium and oxygen 18 isotope compositions as well as hydrochemistry of groundwater, lake water, soil water and river water were investigated in detail to gain an insight into their relationships and the origin of the groundwater. The results show that the groundwater and the lake water are genetically related, but unrelated to local precipitation and the leakage of Heine River at the northern slope of the Qilian mountain. dD and d18O values of deep soil water (deeper than 40 cm) and groundwater plot on the same evaporation line E11, which shows that they have the same recharge source. The point of intersection between E11 and LMWL suggests that the groundwater originates from a water resource, which has a weighted mean value that is lighter by some 6 per mil d18O than local precipitation in Badain Jaran Desert. 3H data of water samples show that the groundwater in the Badain Jaran Desert originates from water recharged after the nuclear test. The deep fault zone underground maybe a water circulation channel based on helium analysis of groundwater. The result has guiding significance to rational exploitation and utilization of the local groundwater.

As a result of a petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical characterization of the Ameghino Formation mudstones (Upper Jurassic- Lower Cretaceous, Antarctic Peninsula), "epiclastic" radiolaria-rich and mixed (radiolaria-rich + tuff) mudstone types were recognized. Contents of clastic material in the mudstones generally increase with younger paleontological age, but local exceptions to this trend have been found. The anoxic environment of the lower part of the sequence changes to more oxidizing conditions towards the top, in transition to the Hauterivian - Barrêmian conglomerates. Element to element correlations show good agreement with the normal differentiation trends of volcanic (andesite-rhyolite) rocks, suggesting that the overall sequence is mainly volcanic in origin with various grade of reworking. For example, the radiolaria-rich mudstone matrix could have been originated from very fine touffaceous suspensions deposited very slowly after the main fall of the tuffs. However, in the upper part of the sequence, some epiclastic supply is revealed by petrographic evidence and illite crystallinity index. The clay mineral association (illite, chlorite and illite-smectite mixed layers) is mainly of diagenetic origin in the stratigraphically lower sections. Low percentages of expandable layers in the illite-smectite mixed layers, as well as the general mineralogical association, suggest a late mesodiagenetic stage, and together with geological evidence, a relatively deep burial (> 1000 m - probably > 2500 m) and temperatures exceeding 100°C.

Fine structure of vertical distributions of phosphorus and silicon in near-bottom layers and interstitial waters is studied in different regions of the Baltic Sea (Gulf of Finland, Bornholm area, Gotland trench). Data obtained are used to calculate fluxes of mineral forms of phosphorus and silicon in exchange processes between sediments and the near-bottom water layer. Depending on sediment types, values of nutrient fluxes vary from 9.8 to 632.6 µg-at/m**2/day for phosphorus and from 232.4 to 1881.1 µg-at/m**2/day for silicon. Fluxes calculated for different regions are compared.

The history of glacial advances and retreats of the East Antarctic ice sheet during the Holocene is not well-known, due to limited field evidence in both the marine and terrestrial realm. A 257-cm-long sediment core was recovered from a marine inlet in the Rauer Group, East Antarctica, 1.8 km in front of the present ice-sheet margin. Radiocarbon dating and lithological characteristics reveal that the core comprises a complete marine record since 4500 yr. A significant ice-sheet expansion beyond present ice margins therefore did not occur during this period.

Stable isotopic values on planktonic foraminifera in a suite of cores from basins across the SE Baffin Shelf are used to extract a record of meltwater events during Termination I deglaciation. Resolution and Hatton basins lie on the SE Baffin Shelf at water depths > 500 m, seaward of major conduits for ice drainage from the eastern sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS). Accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dates are used to constrain our chronology of events in ten cores. In Resolution Basin, three cores have 14C AMS dates on foraminifera of > 20 ka at their bases; whereas Hatton Basin cores terminate in sediments < 13 kyr. Sedimentation rates varied between 0.1 to 4.5 m/ka. Stable oxygen and carbon isotopic ratios were obtained on 146 samples of the planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (Ehrenberg) sinistral, from seven of the ten cores. No evidence was found to indicate that test morphology or size affected delta18O. Between 7 and 13.5 ka the surface water on the shelf was on average 1 per mil lower than the open ocean signal. Significant temporal variations were found in both delta18O and delta13C. Evidence for significant low delta18O events occurred between 13 and 8 ka. The delta13C record from the planktonic foraminifera suggests a threefold division of events between 13 and 7 ka, with positive values between 10.8 and 13.0 ka, negative values between 9 and 10.8 ka, and positive values from 7 to 9 ka. The delta18O data suggest the presence of meltwater on the shelf some 3,000 years prior to the first late glacial dates on terrestrial deglaciation (at circa 10.4 ka). "Hudson Strait must be the real key to the importance of the calving process during deglaciation, because it is potentially the largest marine outlet for the Laurentide Ice Sheet and because it leads into the very center of the ice sheet.....the rates of calving through Hudson Strait during the period of initial ?18O rise unfortunately are unknown." Uranium and radioactive isotopes in bottom sediments and Fe-Mn nodules and crusts of seas and oceans

The main stages of the sedimentary cycle of uranium in modern marine basins are under consideration in the book. Annually about 18 thousand tons of dissolved and suspended uranium enters the ocean with river runoff. Depending on a type of a marine basin uranium accumulated either in sediments of deep-sea basins, or in sediments of continental shelves and slopes. In the surface layer of marine sediments hydrogenic uranium is predominantly bound with organic matter, and in ocean sediments also with iron, manganese and phosphorus. In diagenetic processes there occurs partial redistribution of uranium in sediments, as well as its concentration in iron-manganese, phosphate and carbonate nodules and biogenic phosphate detritus. Concentration of uranium in marine sediments of various types depending on their composition, as well as on forms of its entering, degree of differentiation and of sedimentation rates, on hydrochemical regime and water circulation, and on intensity of diagenetic processes.

In near-shore Pacific bottom sediments to the east of Japan unusually high content of free H2S ocurs. H2S resulting from bacterial reduction of sulfates from interstitial waters has a number of derivatives; pyrite dominates among them. Contents of other derivatives of H2S: sulfide sulfur and organic sulfur do not exceed 0,01%, content of organic sulfur does not exceed 0.1%. Due to reduction content of sulfates can reduce to 0,03% S. Capacity of the process of sulfate reduction, estimated by sum of all reduced forms of S - derivatives of H2S, is a function of organic matter content in sediments. Ability of bottom sediments to accumulate free H2S depends on content of reactive forms of Fe. Spatial distribution of reduced forms of S in the studied sediments is considered.

The book is devoted to study of diagenetic changes of organic matter and mineral part of sediments and interstitial waters of the Pacific Ocean due to physical-chemical and microbiological processes. Microbiological studies deal with different groups of bacteria. Regularities of quantitative distribution and the role of microorganisms in geochemical processes are under consideration. Geochemical studies highlight redox processes of the early stages of sediment diagenesis, alterations of interstitial waters, regularities of variations in chemical composition of iron-manganese nodules.

Das Gollum Channel System mit dem untersuchten Kanal gc1 liegt in der Por- cupine Bucht südwestlich vor Irland. Während der ersten Messung im Jahr 2000 (ANT-XVII/4) fielen vier Kanalabschnitte mit markanten Rückstreuungen ins Au- ge. Diese Bereiche weisen eine abwechselnd starke und schwache Rückstreuinten- sität auf. Da der Schwerpunkt der Expedition ANT-XVII/4 auf der Erforschung der carbonate mounds lag, wurde eine genauere Untersuchung des Kanals während der Expedition ARK-XIX/3 (2003) nachgeholt. Mit dieser zweiten Messung wur- den die vier unterschiedlich rückstreuenden Sektoren bestätigt. Zusätzlich wurden Sedimentproben entnommen und Videos der Meeresbodenoberfläche aufgezeichnet. Ice-rich permafrost landscapes are sensitive to climate and environmental change due to the melt-out of ground ice during thermokarst development. Thermokarst processes in the northern Yukon Territory are currently not well-documented. Lake sediments from Herschel Island (69°36'N; 139°04'W) in the western Canadian Arctic provide a record of thermokarst lake development since the early Holocene. A 727 cm long lake sediment core was analyzed for radiographic images, magnetic susceptibility, granulometry, and biogeochemical parameters (organic carbon, nitrogen, and stable carbon isotopes). Based on eight calibrated AMS radiocarbon dates, the sediment record covers the last ~ 11,500 years and was divided into four lithostratigraphic units (A to D) reflecting different thermokarst stages. Thermokarst initiation at the study area began ~ 11.5 cal ka BP. From ~ 11.5 to 10.0 cal ka BP, lake sediments of unit A started to accumulate in an initial lake basin created by melt-out of massive ground ice and thaw subsidence. Between 10.0 and 7.0 cal ka BP (unit B) the lake basin expanded in size and depth, attributed to talik formation during the Holocene thermal maximum. Higher-than-modern summer air temperatures led to increased lake productivity and widespread terrain disturbances in the lake's catchment. Thermokarst lake development between 7.0 and 1.8 cal ka BP (unit C) was characterized by a dynamic equilibrium, where lake basin and talik steadily expanded into ambient ice-rich terrain through shoreline erosion. Once lakes become deeper than the maximum winter lake ice thickness, thermokarst lake sediments show a great preservation potential. However, site-specific geomorphic factors such as episodic bank-shore erosion or sudden drainage through thermo-erosional valleys or coastal erosion breaching lake basins can disrupt continuous deposition. A hiatus in the record from 1.8 to 0.9 cal ka BP in Lake Herschel likely resulted from lake drainage or allochthonous slumping due to collapsing shore lines before continuous sedimentation of unit D recommenced during the last 900 years.
