In the present work, the mechanism of radiation-induced copolymerization of acrylamide (AM) with sodium acrylate (AANa) in aqueous solution was studied. A method to protect the copolymerization system from the crosslinking and a carbon-carbon mechanism to form gel in copolymerization reaction have been proposed. The condition to prepare the products with different molecular weight, especially with very high molecular weight were found.

The structure of the radiation graft copolymer of acrylic acid onto EVA has been studied by infrared spectroscopy and XPS. It was found that along with the main peak C there is a photoelectron peak at 288.5 eV attributed to [GRAPHICS] group in XPS spectra and the content of its area in XPS increases with increasing of grafting degree of EVA. It was also found that hydrophilicity of EVA increases with the increase of grafting degree.

The effect of gamma-radiation on dynamic viscoelastic properties and thermal behavior for low density polyethylene(LDPE) have been investigated. The store energy modulus (E) of the samples increased after radiation. The beta and alpha transition temperature shifted to higher temperature with increasing irradiation dose. The results of thermal analysis show that crystal melting temperature (Tm), enthalpy(DELTAHm) and crystal disapperance temperature(Td) for irradiated samples decreases with increasing of dose.

In an attempt to explore the effect of structural multiplicity of polymers on the mechanism of radiation crosslinking, the adaptability of the Charlesby-Pinner's equation and its various modified versions are examined. It is recognized that both chemical and morphological multiplicity of polymer structure results in the multiplicity of crosslinking mechanism, and that any single equation can only be applicable to a certain step of the whole radiation process.

The radiation induced phase separation in PTFE as shown by the observation of separation of its melting curves was investigated in this work. The observed phase separation was found to depend on irradiation temperature and explained as being duo to radiation induced increase in disorder of its crystalline region.

The radiation induced depression of the melting and crystallization temperatures of PTFE irradiated at various temperatures followed by heat treatment at 380-degrees-C, and their relationship to structural changes, were investigated. The G(-units) values obtained in this work are different from those of samples which have not undergone heat treatment and seem to be more closely associated with radiation induced branched structures.

The effects of radiation on chlorinated polyisobutylene were studied. It was found that polyisobutylene, which is generally considered to be a typical radiation-degradative polymer, could be crosslinked by gamma-ray irradiation after chlorine had been introduced into its macromolecules. Carbon-chlorine bonds act both as radiation-sensitive groups and reaction species in the radiation process of chlorinated polyisobutylene.

This paper studies gamma-radiation induced lamellar damage mechanism of poly(vinylidene fluoride), using wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and gel fraction determination. We believe that it is ''lamellae core damage'' rather than ''lamellae surface damage'' that results in the decrease of the crystallinity.

In this work, the effects of radiation on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) samples with different crystallinity were studied. Using Suwa's equation for calculating the number-average molecular weight of PTFE, the radiation-induced reduction in molecular weight was followed and the G values for scission of PTFE were also obtained on the basis of the changes in molecular weight. The G(scission) for as-polymerized PTFE was 2.15 +/- 0.01, whereas for sintered sample, which has a relative low crystallinity, G(scission) = 6.0 +/- 0.14.

Changes induced in the crystal structure of PTFE by irradiation at different temperatures have been investigated. In the dose and temperature range examined, the density of PTFE was observed to increase continuously with increasing dose due to the radiation-induced increase in crystallinity, while after post-irradiation annealing at 380-degrees-C, the density was observed to increase for samples irradiated at 20-degrees-C, and to begin to decrease after a certain dose for samples irradiated at 150 and 200-degrees-C. On the basis of the observation of radiation-induced separation of the melting peak of PTFE and its stability relative to the change in the rate of heating, the observed decrease in density was explained as being due to the radiation-induced crosslinking and/or branching inhibiting the process of crystallization and existing in the crystalline region as defects.

By examining the changes in melting temperature, heat of fusion, tensile strength and ultimate elongation at 150-degrees-C, and weight loss, radiation effects on perfluoroalkoxy resins (PFA) were investigated. The results show that at the temperatures used here the predominant effect caused by radiation on PFA is degradation of the molecular weight. The radiation stability is much better than that of polytetrafluoroethylene, however.

In this work the radiation-induced structural changes in PVDF were studied using XPS. It was found that for PVDF irradiated at 150-degrees-C, double bonds were formed mainly through the further dehydrofluorination of crosslinked and/or branched molecules, whereas for samples irradiated at 20-degrees-C the dehydrofluorination of macromolecular radicals to form stable polyene radicals is the main source of unsaturated structures.
