Einführung: In der Schweiz bestehen zwischen den verschieden Sprachregionen Unterschiede in der Sportpartizipation (Lamprecht, Fischer, & Stamm, 2014). In der italienisch- und französischsprachigen Schweiz wird weniger häufig Sport getrieben als in der Deutschschweiz. Diese sprachregionalen Unterschiede im Sportverhalten sind mit denjenigen der europäischen Nachbarländer vergleichbar. In den nordischen und westlichen Ländern wurde im Vergleich zu den östlichen und südlichen Ländern in Europa wiederholt eine höhere Sportpartizipationsrate aufgezeigt (European Commission, 2014). Zur Erklärung werden insbesondere soziokulturelle Faktoren als begünstigende oder behindernde Einflussfaktoren für den Zugang zum Sport diskutiert. Theoretischer Ansatz: Zur Erklärung des Sportverhaltens wird der praxeologische Ansatz des Habitus (Bourdieu, 1976) verwendet. Das theoretische Konzept des Habitus stellt ein historisch und kulturell variierendes Konstrukt dar, welches eine dynamische Vermittlerrolle zwischen der gesellschaftlichen Struktur- und der subjektiven Handlungsebene einnimmt. Der Habitus erfasst ein dauerhaftes Ensemble von Denk-, Wahrnehmungs- und Handlungsschemata, die gesellschaftlich bedingt sind und die individuellen Handlungen sowie die (Sport-)Praxis beeinflusst. Mit diesem kulturtheoretischen Ansatz von Bourdieu sollen die individuellen Wert- und Deutungsmuster bezüglich Sport und Bewegung, Körper, Gesundheit sowie Freizeit erfasst werden. Methodisches Vorgehen: Um die bewegungs- und körperbezogenen Deutungsstrukturen im Sinne von sportbezogenen Wertvorstellungen, Denk- und Wahrnehmungsschemata im Kontext sportlichen Handelns zu untersuchen, werden in der Deutsch- und Westschweiz wohnhafte sportlich aktive sowie inaktive Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene im Alter von 16 bis 24 Jahren mittels eines halbstrukturierten Interviews zu ihrer eigenen Sportpraxis sowie ihrer persönlichen Einstellung zu Sport, Bewegung, Körper, Gesundheit und Freizeit befragt. Zur Auswertung wird eine rekonstruktive Sozialforschungsmethode, diejenige der dokumentarischen Methode (Bohnsack, 2013) angewendet, da diese auf die Rekonstruktion von Habitusformen abzielt. Ergebnisse und Diskussion: Es können verschiedene sportbezogene Wertvorstellungen, Denk- und Wahrnehmungsschemata aufgezeigt werden, die mit der habituellen Sportpraxis zusammenhängen z.B. der Stellenwert des Sports d.h. inwiefern Sport als Bestandteil des Lebens oder als Teil der eigenen (körperlichen) Identität wahrgenommen wird. Zudem ist das Ziel der dokumentarischen Analyse aufgrund der bewegungs- und körperbezogenen Deutungsstrukturen unterschiedliche Habitustypen im Kontext des Sports aufzuzeigen. Soziokulturell geprägte Wertvorstellungen könnten einen Beitrag zur Erklärung der unterschiedlichen Sportpartizipationsraten in den verschiedenen Sprachregionen der Schweiz leisten. A common training plan in general internal medicine was a brave enterprise started in 2011 in accordance with the common objectives of the Swiss Society of General Medicine and the Swiss Society of Internal Medicine. The next challenge will be the dissolution of the two Societies and therefore the creation of an unique new association in 2015. This is an extraordinary opportunity to bring together the specific qualities of each association and to create a new society. Issues, objectives and secondary benefits expected from the creation of the largest national society of a medical discipline are explored as a joint discussion in this article.

Question: The intervertebral disc (IVD) has a limited regenerative potential and low back pain represents a leading cause of disability [1]. IVD repair strategies require an appropriate cell source that is able to regenerate the damaged tissue such as progenitor stem cells. Recently, progenitor cells that are positive for the angiopoietin re- ceptor (Tie2) in the nucleus pulposus were identified [2]. Here we isolated primary cells from bovine IVD and sorted bovine nucleus pulposus progenitor cells (NPPC) for the marker Tie2. Furthermorewe tested whether Tie2 expressing cells can differentiate into os- teogenic and adipogenic lineages in vitro. Methods: NP cells were obtained from 1 year old bovine tails by sequential digestion with pronase for 1 h and collagenase over- night. Sorted Tie2- and Tie2+ cells were cultured in osteogenic and adipogenic medium for 3 weeks. The formed cell layers from both subpopulations were stained for calcium deposition and fat droplets. Colony forming units were prepared for both cell sus- pensions in methylcellulose-based medium and formed colonies ([10 cells) were analyzed macroscopically after 8 days. Results: After 3 weeks of culture, sorted Tie2+ cells were able to differentiate into osteocytes and adipocytes as characterized by cal- cium deposition and fat droplet formation. By contrast, Tie2- cells generated a weak staining for calcium and no fat droplets were ob- tained (Fig. 1). Sorted Tie2- and Tie2+ subpopulations of cells both formed colonies, however with different morphologies. The colonies formed from Tie2+ cells were spheroid in shape whereas those from Tie2- cells were spread and fibroblastic. Conclusion: Our data showed that Tie2+ cells of the nucleus pul- posus cells are progenitor-like cells that are able to differentiate into osteogenic and adipogenic lineages. Sorting of NPPC for Tie2 may represent a promising strategy with the potential to be used in the clinics for treatment of intervertebral disc damage. References 1. Il se veut un outil qui permette aux futurs modérateurs de (1) intégrer une approche participative et interactive dans ses formations diverses, (2) appliquer des techniques de modération basées sur l'apprentissage commun, en groupe d'acteurs mixtes et dans le contexte local et (3) acquérir une base de connaissance de la gestion durable des ressources naturelles et de traiter cette thématique de façon participative et interactive.

Young peoples’ sport activity differs considerably depending on the linguistic region in Switzerland (Lamprecht, Fischer, & Stamm, 2014). This appears to be based on cultural as well as on structural differences. The question then arises how differing structural conditions in communes (e.g. sport facilities, significance of the municipal promotion of sport) across different linguistic regions of Switzerland cause variation in sport behaviour. Based on the theory of social action (Coleman, 1990), it is assumed that individual behaviour is not only determined by individual but also by structural and socio - cultural factors in which a person is socially embedded . In 33 municipalities of the German and French speaking region of Switzerland, multilevel data was gathered analysing possible influences of structural factors on sports behaviour. Using an online survey, 15 to 30 year old inhabitants (N=3677) were questi oned about their sports participation, as well as their perception of sport - related structural characteristics in their commune. To collect information about communes’ sport facilities, sport providers as well as representatives of the municipal administra tion were interviewed and document analyses were conducted. Representatives of the municipal administration attach more importance to sport promotion in the German speaking than in French - speaking municipalities. Young people living in the French speaking commune are less satisfied with the sport facilities (F(1,3266)=31.31, p<.01) and they are less physically active than their German - speaking counterparts (Chi2(1,N=3537)=22.51, p<.05). These first findings show the impact of structural conditions in commun es on sport participation of adolescents and young people. However, further multilevel analyses will be conducted for a better understanding of correlations between structural conditions and different sports behaviour of young people. References Coleman, J. Polycystine radiolarians are used to reconstruct summer sea surface temperatures (SSSTs) for the Late Pleistocene-Holocene (600-13,400 14C years BP) in the Norwegian Sea. At 13,200 14C years BP, the SSST was close to the average Holocene SSST (~12°C). It then gradually dropped to 7.1°C in the Younger Dryas. Near the Younger Dryas-Holocene transition (~10,000 14C years BP), the SSST increased 5°C in about 530 years. Four abrupt cooling events, with temperature drops of up to 2.1°C, are recognized during the Holocene: at 9340, 7100 ("8200 calendar years event"), 6400 and 1650 14C years BP. Radiolarian SSSTs and the isotopic signal from the GISP2 ice core are strongly coupled, stressing the importance of the Norwegian Sea as a mediator of heat/precipitation exchange between the North Atlantic, the atmosphere, and the Greenland ice sheet. Radiolarian and diatom-derived SSSTs display similarities, with the former not showing the recently reported Holocene cooling trend.

Productivity at six core locations in the eastern equatorial Pacific (EEP) was reconstructed with a benthic foraminiferal transfer function. The core records show strong regionality, especially where affected by Peru margin upwelling of deeper Equatorial Undercurrent Water (EUC) (originally coming from the subantarctic). This "Peru margin" record differs from that seen along the equator where divergence leads to shallow upwelling, and it is generally inverse to that seen in cores outside the areas of equatorial upwelling. Principal components analysis shows that the main productivity pattern correlates well to the global oxygen isotope record and has lowest values during isotope stages 2 and 4. In addition to this, equatorial cores show a higher frequency pattern of variation which becomes much more pronounced during MIS 3 and 2. The reconstructions based on benthic foraminifera were tested against those from nonaccumulation rate based inorganic chemical proxies of export production. These were found to correlate well in the region influenced by Peru upwelling, and also to share common features for sites along the equator. All the nonaccumulation rate based paleotracers are consistent with one another and differ from accumulation rate derived proxies. The differences between the two classes of paleotracers may result from uncertainties in calculating actual biogenic fluxes since 230Th-normalized results conform more to those we obtained. Analysis of planktonic carbon isotope values for the EEP, and their comparison to the record of the Pacific subantarctic, indicates that the subantarctic contribution to the EUC was reduced during MIS 3 and 2.

Although the pulsating nature and the abruptness of the last deglaciation are well documented in marine and land records, very few marine records have so far been able to capture the high-frequency climatic changes recorded in the Greenland ice core Dye 3. We studied high-resolution sediment cores from SE Norwegian Sea, which display a detailed climatic record during the last deglaciation comparable to that of Dye 3. Accelerator mass spectrometry age control of the cores enables us to correlate this record in detail with continental records. The results indicate that the surface waters of the SE Norwegian Sea were seasonally ice free after 13,400 B.P. The Bølling/Allerød interstadial complex (13,200-11,200 B.P.) was a climatically unstable period with changing Arctic-Subarctic conditions. This period was punctuated by four progressively more severe sea surface temperature (SST) minima: between 12,900-12,800 B.P. (BCP I); 12,500-12,400 B.P. (BCP II); 12,300-12,000 B.P. (OD I); and 11,800-11,500 B.P. (OD II). The Younger Dryas (YD) (11,200-10,200 B.P.) represents the severest and most prolonged cold episode of this series of climatic deteriorations. It was bounded by very rapid SST changes and characterized by Arctic-Polar conditions. The first true warm Atlantic water incursion to the SE Norwegian Sea took place around 10,100 B.P., followed by a brief cooler condition between 9900-9600 B.P. (YD II). The early Holocene climatic optimum occurred between 8000-5000 B.P. A conceptual model is proposed where meltwater fluxes are suggested to cause the observed instability in the SST record.

Upwelling occurs during the summer off the coast of Oman when the Asian monsoon produces strong southwest winds in the northern Arabian Sea. Ekman transport driven by the southwest monsoon winds upwells cool nutrient-rich waters along the coast which contrast with the warmer, less productive waters offshore. The spatial pattern of foraminifers in the sediments corresponds with the coastal environmental gradient. The upwelling species Globigerina bulloides dominates the sediment assemblage on the continental margin, while Globigerinita glutinata is more abundant offshore, creating a coastal gradient in fauna. We reconstructed the upwelling faunal gradient using high resolution oxygen isotope stratigraphy to correlate between Hole 723B on the Oman Margin, and a core from the Owen Ridge (RC2761), adjacent Site 722. A gradient similar in magnitude to the present, implying upwelling conditions similar to today existed during each interglacial time during the late Pleistocene interval from 0 to 300 k.y. The gradient was reduced or absent during glacial times implying diminshed southwest winds along the coast of Oman, not strong enough to produce an environmental gradient between the coast and offshore sites.

Pliocene changes in the vertical water mass structure of the western South Atlantic are inferred from changes in benthic foraminiferal assemblages and stable isotopes from DSDP Holes 516A, 517, and 518. Factor analysis of 34 samples from Site 518 reveals three distinct benthic foraminiferal assemblages that have been associated with specific subsurface water masses in the modern ocean. These include a Nuttalides umbonifera assemblage (Factor 1) associated with Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW), a Globocassidulina subglobosa-Uvigerina peregrina assemblage (Factor 2) associated with Circumpolar Deep Water (CPDW), and an Oridorsalis umbonatus-Epistominella exigua assemblage associated with North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW). Bathymetric gradients in d13C between Holes 516A (1313 m), 517 (2963 m), and 518 (3944 m) are calculated whenever possible to monitor the degree of similarity and/or difference in the apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) of water masses located at these depths during the Pliocene. Changes in bathymetric d13C gradients coupled with benthic foraminiferal assemblages record fundamental changes in the vertical water mass structure of the Vema Channel during the Pliocene from 4.1 to 2.7 Ma. At Site 518, the interval from 4.1 to 3.6 Ma is dominated by the N. umbonifera (Factor 1) and O. umbonatus-E. exigua (Factor 3) assemblages. The d13C gradient between Holes 518 (3944 m) and 516A (1313 m) undergoes rapid oscillations during this interval though no permanent increase in the gradient is observed. However, d13C values at Site 518 are clearly lighter during this interval. These conditions may be related to increased bottom water activity associated with the re-establishment of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet in the late Gilbert Chron (-4.2 to 3.6 Ma) (Osborn et al., 1982). The interval from 3.6 to 3.2 Ma is marked by a dominance of the G. subglobosa-U. peregrina (Factor 2) assemblage and lack of a strong d13C gradient between Holes 518 (3944 m) and 516A (1313 m). We suggest that shallow circumpolar waters expanded to depths of a least 3944 m (Site 518) during this time. The most profound faunal and isotopic change occurs at 3.2 Ma, and is marked by dominance of the N. umbonifera (Factor 1) and O. umbonatus-E. exigua (Factor 3) assemblages, a 1.1 per mil enrichment in d18O, and a large negative increase in the d13C gradient between Holes 518 and 516A. These changes at Site 518 record the vertical displacement of circumpolar waters by AABW and NADW. This change in vertical water mass structure at 3.2 Ma was probably related to a global cooling event and/or final closure of the Central American seaway. A comparison of the present-day d13C structure of the Vema Channel with a reconstruction between 3.2 and 2.7 Ma indicates that circulation patterns during this late Pliocene interval were similar to those of the modern western South Atlantic.

To assess the relationship of radiolarian production, species distribution in water and surface sediment to water-mass characteristics, biological productivity and export regimes in the Sea of Okhotsk (SOk) we accomplished a quantitative analysis of radiolarian assemblages obtained from 35 surface-sediment samples and 115 plankton samples recording the radiolarian depth distribution in the upper 1000 m of the water column at 23 locations. This study augments the knowledge on the autecological demands of radiolarians dwelling in a specific hydrographic and biological environment, and extracts new information on the significance of radiolarians for the assessment of past oceanographic and climatic development in high latitudes. Highest radiolarian accumulation rates and seasonal radiolarian standing stocks are encountered in the western part of the SOk close to Sakhalin, marking the environmental conditions in this area as most favorable for radiolarian production. Maximum standing stocks occur during summer, indicating that the radiolarian signal preserved in the sediment record is mainly produced during this season when the mesopelagic biomass is at highest activity. We identified seven radiolarian species and groups related to specific water-mass characteristics, depth habitats, and productivity regimes. Of those, Dictyophimus hirundo and Cycladophora davisiana are most prominent in the Sea of Okhotsk Intermediate Water (200-1000 m), the latter representing an indicator of the occurrence of cold and well ventilated intermediate/deep water and enhanced export of organic matter from a highly productive ocean surface. While Antarctissa (?) sp. 1 is typically related to the cold-water Sea of Okhotsk Dicothermal Layer (SODL), ranging between 50 and 150 m water depth, the surface waters above the SODL affected by strong seasonal variability are inhabited predominantly by taxa belonging to the Spongodiscidae, having a broad environmental tolerance. Taxa only found in the sediment record show that the plankton study did not cover all assemblages occurring in the modern SOk. This accounts for an assemblage restricted to the western Kurile Basin and apparently related to environmental conditions influenced by North Pacific and Japan Sea waters. Other important taxa include species of the Plagoniidae group, representing the most prominent contributors to the SOk plankton and surface sediments. These radiolarians show a more opportunistic occurrence and are indicative of high nutrient supply in a hydrographic environment characterized by pronounced stratification enhancing heterotrophic activity and phytodetritus export.

Firm stratigraphic correlations are needed to evaluate the global significance of unconformity bounded units (sequences). We correlate the well-developed uppermost Campanian and Maestrichtian sequences of the New Jersey Coastal Plain to the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS) by integrating Sr-isotopic stratigraphy and biostratigraphy. To do this, we developed a Maestrichtian (ca. 73-65 Ma) Sr-isotopic reference section at Deep Sea Drilling Project Hole 525A in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean. Maestrichtian strata can then be dated by measuring their 87Sr/86Sr composition, calibrating to the GPTS of S. C. Cande and D. V. Kent (1993, personal commun.), and using the equation Age (Ma) = 37326.894-52639.89 (87Sr/86Sr). Sr-stratigraphic resolution for the Maestrichtian is estimated as +-1.2 to +-2 m.y. At least two unconformity-bounded units comprise the uppermost Campanian to Maestrichtian strata in New Jersey. The lower one, the Marshalltown sequence, is assigned to calcareous nannofossil Zones CC20/21 (~NC19) and CC22b (~NC20). It ranges in age from ~74.1 to 69.9 Ma based on Sr-isotope age estimates. The overlying Navesink sequence is assigned to calcareous nannoplankton Zones CC25-26 (~NC21-23); it ranges in age from 69.3 to 65 Ma based on Sr-isotope age estimates. The upper part of this sequence, the Tinton Formation, has no calcareous planktonic control; Sr-isotopes provide an age estimate of 66 +- 1.2 Ma (latest Maestrichtian). Sequence boundaries at the base and the top of the Marshalltown sequence match boundaries elsewhere in the Atlantic Coastal Plain (Owens and Gohn, 1985) and the inferred global sea-level record of Haq et al. (1987); they support eustatic changes as the mechanism controlling depositional history of this sequence. However, the latest Maestrichtian record in New Jersey does not agree with Haq et al. (1987); we attribute this to correlation and time-scale differences near the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary. High sedimentation rates in the latest Maestrichtian of New Jersey (Shrewsbury Member of the Red Bank Formation and the Tinton Formation) suggest tectonic uplift and/or rapid progradation during deposition of the highstand systems tract.

Based on the faunal record of planktonic foraminifers in three long gravity sediment cores from the eastern equatorial Atlantic, the sea-surface temperature history ove the last 750,000 years was studied at a resolution of 3,000 to 10,000 years. Detailed oxygen-isotope and paleomagnetic stratigraphy helped to identify the following major faunal events: Globorotaloides hexagonus and Globorotalia tumida flexuosa became extinct in the eastern tropical Atlantic at the isotope stage 4/5 boundary, now dated at 68,000 years B.P. The persistent occurrence of the pink variety of Globigerinoides ruber started during the late stage 12 at 410,000 years B.P. CARTUNE-age. This datum may provide an easily detectible faunal stratigraphic marker for the mid-Brunhes Chron. The updated scheme of the Ericson zones helped the recognition of a hiatus at the northwestern slope of the Sierra Leone Basin covering oxygen-isotope stages 10 to 12. Classifying the planktonic foraminifer counts into six faunal assemblages, according to the factor analysis derived model of Pflaumann (1985), the tropical and the tropical-upwelling communities account for 57 % at Site 16415, and 86 % at Site 13519, respectively of the variance of the faunal record. A largely continuous paleotemperature record for both winter and summer seasons was obtained from the top of the Sierra Leone Rise with the winter temperatures ranging between 20 and 25 °C, and the summer ones between 24 and 30 °C. The record of cores from greater water depths is frequently interrupted by samples with no-analogue faunal communities and/or poor preservation. Based on the seasonality signal, during cold periods the termal equator shifted to a geographically mnore asymmetrical northern position. Dissolution altering the faunal communities becomes stronger with greater water depth, the estimated mean minimum loss of specimens increases from 70 % to 80 % between 2,860 and 3,850 water depth although some species will be more susceptible than others. Enhanced dissolution occured during stage 4 but also during cold phases in the warm stage 7 and 9. Correlations between the Foraminiferal Dissolution Index and the estimated sea-surface temperatures are significant. Foraminiferal flux rates, negatively correlated to the flux rates of organic carbon and of diatoms, may be a result of enhanced dissolution during cold stages, destroying still more of the faunal signal than indicated by the calculated minimum loss. The fluctuations of the oxygen-isotope curves and the hibernal sea-surfave temperatures are fairly coherent. During warm oxygen-isotope stages the temperature maxima lag often by 5 to 15 ka behind the respective sotope minima. During cold stages, sea-surface temperature changes are partly out of phase and contain additional fluctuations.

The distribution, biomass, and diversity of living (Rose Bengal stained) deep-sea benthic foraminifera (>30 µm) were investigated with multicorer samples from seven stations in the Arabian Sea during the intermonsoonal periods in March and in September/October, 1995. Water depths of the stations ranged between 1916 and 4425 m. The distribution of benthic foraminifera was compared with dissolved oxygen, % organic carbon, % calcium carbonate, ammonium, % silica, chloroplastic pigment equivalents, sand content, pore water content of the sediment, and organic carbon flux to explain the foraminiferal patterns and depositional environments. A total of six species-communities comprising 178 living species were identified by principal component analysis. The seasonal comparison shows that at the western stations foraminiferal abundance and biomass were higher during the Spring Intermonsoon than during the Fall Intermonsoon. The regional comparison indicates a distinct gradient in abundance, biomass, and diversity from west to east, and for biomass from north to south. Highest values are recorded in the western part of the Arabian Sea, where the influence of coastal and offshore upwelling are responsible for high carbon fluxes. Estimated total biomass of living benthic foraminifera integrated for the upper 5 cm of the sediment ranged between 11 mg Corg m**-2 at the southern station and 420 mg Corg m**-2 at the western station. Foraminifera in the size range from 30 to 125 ?m, the so-called microforaminifera, contributed between 20 and 65% to the abundance, but only 3% to 28% to the biomass of the fauna. Highest values were found in the central and southern Arabian Sea, indicating their importance in oligotrophic deep-sea areas. The overall abundance of benthic foraminifera is positively correlated with oxygen content and pore volume, and partly with carbon content and chloroplastic pigment equivalents of the sediment. The distributional patterns of the communities seem to be controlled by sand fraction, dissolved oxygen, calcium carbonate and organic carbon content of the sediment, but the critical variables are of different significance for each community.
