In this paper, a simple single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverter topology consisting of a boost section, a low-voltage single-phase inverter with an inductive filter, and a step-up transformer interfacing the grid is considered. Ideally, this topology will not inject any lower order harmonics into the grid due to high-frequency pulse width modulation operation. However, the nonideal factors in the system such as core saturation-induced distorted magnetizing current of the transformer and the dead time of the inverter, etc., contribute to a significant amount of lower order harmonics in the grid current. A novel design of inverter current control that mitigates lower order harmonics is presented in this paper. An adaptive harmonic compensation technique and its design are proposed for the lower order harmonic compensation. In addition, a proportional-resonant-integral (PRI) controller and its design are also proposed. This controller eliminates the dc component in the control system, which introduces even harmonics in the grid current in the topology considered. The dynamics of the system due to the interaction between the PRI controller and the adaptive compensation scheme is also analyzed. The complete design has been validated with experimental results and good agreement with theoretical analysis of the overall system is observed.

The nanocomposites of xTiO(2)+(1-x)Ni0.53Cu0.12Zn0.35Fe2O4 (where 0 <= x >= 1) were prepared using microwave hydrothermal (M H) method at 165 degrees C/45 min. The as-synthesized powders were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The particle size of the powder varies from 18 to 35 nm. The as prepared powders were densified at 500 degrees C/30 min using microwave sintering method. The sintered composites were characterized by XRD and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The bulk densities of the present composites were increasing with the addition of TiO2. The grain sizes of all the composite vary between 65 nm and 90 nm. The addition of TiO2 to ferrite increased the dielectric properties (epsilon' and epsilon `') also the resonant frequency of all the composites was found to be greater than 1 GHz. The imaginary part of permeability mu `' was found to increase with an increase of TiO2.

Results of a high resolution photoemission and electrochemistry study of Se adsorption Au(111) and Ag(111) surfaces performed by immersion of pristine samples into an aqeuous solution of Na2Se are presented. Cyclic voltammetry on Au shows formation of selenium adsorbed species and the structures observed in reductive desorption are to the atomic and polymeric species observed in XPS. In the case of Au(111) XPS spectra in the Se(3d) region indeed show two main features attributed to Se chemisorbed atomically and polymeric Se-8 features.' Smaller structures due to other types of Se conformations were also observed. The Au(4f) peak line, shape does not show core level, shifts: indicative of Au selenide formation the case of silver, XPS spectra for the Ag(3d) show a broadening of the peak and a deconvolution into Ag-B bulk like Ag-Se components shows that the Ag-Se is located at a lower binding energy, an effect similar to oxidation and sulfidation of Ag. The Se(3d) XPS spectrum is found to be substantially different from the Au case and dominated by atomic type Se due to the selenide, though a smaller intensity Se structure at an energy similar to the Se-8 structure for Au is also observed. Changes in the valence band region. related to Se adsorption are reported.

Stimulated optical signals obtained by subjecting the system to a narrow band and a broadband pulse show both gain and loss Raman features at the red and blue side of the narrow beam, respectively. Recently observed temperature-dependent asymmetry in these features Mallick et al., J. Raman Spectrosc. 42, 1883 (2011); Dang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 043001 (2011)] has been attributed to the Stokes and anti-Stokes components of the third-order susceptibility, chi((3)). By treating the setup as a steady state of an open system coupled to four quantum radiation field modes, we show that Stokes and anti-Stokes processes contribute to both the loss and gain resonances. chi((3)) predicts loss and gain signals with equal intensity for electronically off-resonant excitation. Some asymmetry may exist for resonant excitation. However, this is unrelated to the Stokes vs anti-Stokes processes. Any observed temperature-dependent asymmetry must thus originate from effects lying outside the chi((3)) regime.

CsI can be used as a photocathode material in UV photon detectors. The detection efficiency of the detector strongly depends on the photoemission property of the photocathode. CsI is very hygroscopic in nature. This limits the photoelectron yield from the photocathode when exposed to humid air even for a short duration during photocathode mounting or transfer. We report here on the improvement of photoemission properties of both thick (300 nm) and thin (30 nm) UV-sensitive CsI film exposed to humid air by the process of vacuum treatment. A power filter is necessary to connect the output of a power converter to the grid so as to reduce the harmonic distortion introduced in the line current and voltage by the power converter. Many a times, a transformer is also present before the point of common coupling. Magnetic components often constitute a significant part of the overall weight, size and cost of the grid interface scheme. So, a compact inexpensive design is desirable. A higher-order LCL-filter and a transformer are increasingly being considered for grid interconnection of the power converter. This study proposes a design method based on a three-winding transformer, that generates an integrated structure that behaves as an LCL-filter, with both the filter inductances and the transformer that are merged into a single electromagnetic component. The parameters of the transformer are derived analytically. It is shown that along with a filter capacitor, the transformer parameters provide the filtering action of an LCL-filter. A single-phase full-bridge power converter is operated as a static compensator for performance evaluation of the integrated filter transformer. A resonant integrator-based single-phase phase locked loop and stationary frame AC current controller are employed for grid frequency synchronisation and line current control, respectively.

Ideally, it is desirable to design and manufacture a transformer winding that can render all its internal resonances non-excitable. This study examines the effectiveness of an interleaved winding in achieving this goal. While investigating its effectiveness, it led to the establishment of a much desired theoretical basis that reinforces the reasons put forward in the literature to explain internal insulation failures observed in interleaved windings used in extra high voltage (EHV) transformers. Numerical calculations along with experimental verification on actual transformer windings are presented. This study reveals that most of the natural frequencies that are normally non-excitable in the line and neutral current responses of an interleaved winding have been rendered excitable in the disk-to-disk voltages, thus, providing favourable conditions for insulation overstress because of resonant overvoltages. Prevalence of such a condition is an inherent characteristic of interleaved windings.

Micro- and nano-mechanical resonators have been proposed for a variety of applications ranging from mass sensing to signal processing. Often their actuation and/or detection involve external subsystems that are much larger than the resonator itself. We have designed a simple microcantilever resonator with integrated sensor and actuator, facilitating the integration of large arrays of resonators. This unique design can be manufactured with a low-cost fabrication process, involving just a single step of lithography. The bilayer cantilever of gold and silicon dioxide is used as piezoresistive sensor as well as thermal bimorph actuator. The ac current used for actuation and the dc current used for piezoresistive detection are separated in the frequency-domain using a bias-tee circuit configuration. The resonant response is measured by detecting the second harmonic of the actuation current using a lock-in amplifier.

We report ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) study on a grid formed with permalloy nanowires to understand the spin wave dynamics. The presence of two sets of magnetic nanowires perpendicular to each other in the same device enables better control over spin waves. The grid was fabricated using e-beam lithography followed by DC-Magnetron sputtering and liftoff technique. It has dimensions of 800 +/- 10 and 400 +/- 10 nm as periods along X and Y directions with permalloy wires of width 145 +/- 10 nm. FMR studies were done at X-band (9.4 GHz) with the field sweep up to 1 Tesla. The in-plane angular variation of resonant fields shows that there are two well separated modes present, indicating two uniaxial anisotropy axes which are perpendicular to each other. The variation in the intensities in the FMR signal w.r.t. the grid angle is used to describe the spin wave confinement in different regions of the grid. We also explained the asymmetry in the magnetic properties caused by the geometrical property of the rectangular grid and the origin for the peak splitting for the modes occurring at higher resonant fields. Micromagnetic simulations based on OOMMF with two dimensional periodic boundary conditions (2D-PBC) are used to support our experimental findings.

This paper reports the first observations of transition from a pre-vortex breakdown (Pre-VB) flowreversal to a fully developed central toroidal recirculation zone in a non-reacting, double-concentric swirling jet configuration and its response to longitudinal acoustic excitation. This transition proceeds with the formation of two intermediate, critical flow regimes. First, a partially penetrated vortex breakdown bubble (VBB) is formed that indicates the first occurrence of an enclosed structure as the centre jet penetration is suppressed by the growing outer roll-up eddy; resulting in an opposed flow stagnation region. Second, a metastable transition structure is formed that marks the collapse of inner mixing vortices. In this study, the time-averaged topological changes in the coherent recirculation structures are discussed based on the non-dimensional modified Rossby number (Ro(m)) which appears to describe the spreading of the zone of swirl influence in different flow regimes. Further, the time-mean global acoustic response of pre-VB and VBB is measured as a function of pulsing frequency using the relative aerodynamic blockage factor (i.e., maximum radial width of the inner recirculation zone). It is observed that all flow modes except VBB are structurally unstable as they exhibit severe transverse radial shrinkage (similar to 20%) at the burner Helmholtz resonant modes (100-110 Hz). In contrast, all flow regimes show positional instability as seen by the large-scale, asymmetric spatial shifting of the vortex core centres. Finally, the mixing transfer function M (f) and magnitude squared coherence lambda(2)(f) analysis is presented to determine the natural couplingmodes of the system dynamic parameters (u', p'), i.e., local acoustic response. It is seen that the pre-VB flow mode exhibits a narrow-band, low pass filter behavior with a linear response window of 100-105 Hz. However, in the VBB structure, presence of critical regions such as the opposed flow stagnation region alters the linearity range with the structure showing a response even at higher pulsing frequencies (100-300 Hz). We demonstrate observation of Raman signals of different analytes adsorbed on carbonaceous materials, such as, chemically reduced graphene, graphene oxide (GO), multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT), graphite and activated carbon. The analytes selected for the study were Rhodamine 6G (R6G) (in resonant conditions), Rhodamine B (RB), Nile blue (NBA), Crystal Violet (CV) and acetaminophen (paracetamol). All the analytes except paracetamol absorb and fluoresce in the visible region. In this article we provide experimental evidence of the fact that observation of Raman signals of analytes on such carbonaceous materials are more due to resonance effect, suppression of fluorescence and efficient adsorption and that this property in not unique to graphene or nanotubes but prevalent for various type of carbon materials.

We report on the rectification properties from a single ZnS nanorod measured using the UHV-SPM technique. The rectification behavior is evidenced from the current-voltage characteristics measured on a single ZnS nanorod. We propose a tunneling mechanism where the direct tunneling mechanism is dominant at lower applied bias voltages followed by resonant tunneling through discrete energy levels of the nanorod. A further increase in the bias voltage changes the tunneling mechanism to the Fowler-Nordheim tunneling regime enabling rectification behavior. Realizing rectification from a single ZnS nanorod may provide a means of realizing a single nanorod based miniaturized device.

A series of resonant column tests have been performed in the torsional mode of vibration to assess the effect of saturation, starting from the near dry state to the fully saturated state, on the damping ratio of sands corresponding to the threshold strain level. Tests were carried out on three different gradations of sand for various combinations of relative density and effective confining pressure. For fine sands, a certain optimum degree of saturation exists at which the damping ratio minimizes; it is known that a decrease in Sr from a fully saturated state leads to a continuous increase in the matric suction. With an increase in the relative density, the optimum degree of saturation for fine sand increases marginally from 1.38 to 1.49%, but does not show any dependency on the effective confining pressure. In contrast, the minimum values of the damping ratio for medium and coarse sands are found to always correspond to the near dry state. The damping ratio decreases continuously with increases in relative density and effective confining pressure. The threshold strain level has been found to decrease continuously with increases in relative density and effective confining pressure. (C) 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.

A droplet introduced in an external convective flow field exhibits significant multimodal shape oscillations depending upon the intensity of the aerodynamic forcing. In this paper, a theoretical model describing the temporal evolution of normal modes of the droplet shape is developed. The fluid is assumed to be weakly viscous and Newtonian. The convective flow velocity, which is assumed to be incompressible and inviscid, is incorporated in the model through the normal stress condition at the droplet surface and the equation of motion governing the dynamics of each mode is derived. The coupling between the external flow and the droplet is approximated to be a one-way process, i.e., the external flow perturbations effect the droplet shape oscillations and the droplet oscillation itself does not influence the external flow characteristics. The shape oscillations of the droplet with different fluid properties under different unsteady flow fields were simulated. For a pulsatile external flow, the frequency spectra of the normal modes of the droplet revealed a dominant response at the resonant frequency, in addition to the driving frequency and the corresponding harmonics. At driving frequencies sufficiently different from the resonant frequency of the prolate-oblate oscillation mode of the droplet, the oscillations are stable. But at resonance the oscillation amplitude grows in time leading to breakup depending upon the fluid viscosity. A line vortex advecting past the droplet, simulated as an isotropic jump in the far field velocity, leads to the resonant excitation of the droplet shape modes if and only if the time taken by the vortex to cross the droplet is less than the resonant period of the P-2 mode of the droplet. A train of two vortices interacting with the droplet is also analysed. It shows clearly that the time instant of introduction of the second vortex with respect to the droplet shape oscillation cycle is crucial in determining the amplitude of oscillation. The electronic structure of quasi-two-dimensional monophosphate tungsten bronze, P4W12O44, has been investigated by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theoretical calculations. Experimental electron-like bands around Gamma point and Fermi surfaces have similar shapes as predicted by calculations. Fermi surface mapping at different temperatures shows a depletion of density of states at low temperature in certain flat portions of the Fermi surfaces. These flat portions of the Fermi surfaces satisfy the partial nesting condition with incommensurate nesting vectors q(1) and q(2), which leads to the formation of charge density waves in this phosphate tungsten bronzes. The setting up of charge density wave in these bronzes can well explain the anomaly observed in its transport properties. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014
