PZT ceramic powders were successfully prepared from the mixture of PbO, ZrO2 and TiO2 by mechanochemical synthesis in a planetary ball mill, under different milling conditions. Phase evolution during synthesis was monitored by X-ray diffraction analysis. Intensive milling resulted in formation of the nanocrystalline, perovskite PZT powders after 1 h of milling. This is a significant improvement in comparison to milling conditions reported by other authors. Depending on milling parameters the presence of some other phases, such as unreacted ZrO2, was also detected in some samples. The changes in powder size and morphology due to intensive milling, were determined by SEM and TEM, while BET analysis was used to determine specific surface area of the powders. Conclusions about processes taking place during mechanochemical synthesis of PZT powders were made based on the results of characterization. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Polycrystalline materials of SnO(2) doped with ZnO, WO(3), CoO, Nb(2)O(5), and MoO(3). were synthesized by solid state reaction. X-ray powder diffraction data were collected with Cu K(alpha) radiation from a Rigaku-Rint 2000 rotating anode source. The structural and profile parameters were refined by the Rietveld method using GSAS [2]. The obtained residual parameters are R(wp) = 11,93% and R(Bragg) = 4,19%. The refined profile parameters indicate no anisotropic crystallite microstrain. The refinement results and Fourier differences calculations indicate that the dopants do not occupy interstitial sites in the crystal structure of SnO(2).

The partial oxalate method, with the columbite route, associated with the Pechini method, was used to obtain a very fine ceramic powder at low temperature. Using this route it was possible to obtain a very reactive powder and to synthesize a lead magnesium niobate (PMN) powder with up to 100% of perovskite phase at a lower temperatures than the PbO melting point. The influence of the BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 seeds in the phase formation, along with time and temperature during the PMN calcination, was also investigated. The amount of 2% of BaTiO3 seeds promoted PMN powder formation with 100% of perovskite phase and a very narrow particle size distribution. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd and Techna S.r.l. Gallium-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:Ga 1, 2 3, 4 and 5 at%) samples were prepared in powder form by modifying the Pechini method. The formation of zinc gallate (ZnGa2O4) With the spinel crystal structure was observed even in ZnO:Ga 1 at% by X-ray diffraction. The presence of ZnGa2O4 in ZnO:Ga samples was also evidenced by luminescence spectroscopy through its blue emission at 430 nm, assigned to charge transfer between Ga3+ at regular octahedral symmetry and its surrounding O2- ions. The amount of ZnGa2O4 increases as the dopant concentration increases, as observed by the quantitative phase analysis by the Rietveld method. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The study of the photoluminescent properties affected by order and disorder of the BaMoO4 powders is the principal objective in this work. BaMoO4 compounds were prepared using soft chemical process called Complex Polymerization Method. In this work, different deagglomeration types and different heating rates were used to promote different disorder degrees. Scheelite type phase (BaMoO4) was determined by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transformed Infra-Red (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy after heat treating the sample at 400 degrees C. The room temperature luminescence spectra revealed an intense single-emission band in the visible region. Based on XRD and Raman data it was observed that the transition between the completely disordered structure to completely ordered structure is a good condition for photoluminescence (PL) emission. The best PL emission is obtained when the material possesses short range disorder, i.e., is periodically ordered (XRD), but some disorder as measured by Raman spectroscopy. The excellent optical properties observed for disordered BaMoO4 suggested that this material is a highly promising candidate for optical applications.

Intense and broad visible photoluminescent (PL) band was observed at room temperature in disordered Pb(Zr(0.53)Ti(0.47))O(3) powders. Structural order-disorder was evaluated by different methods. XANES results pointed to the presence of different coordination modes of disordered Ti powders, and in the ordered sample the local structure around titanium atoms is characteristic of the structurally ordered PZT with only TiO(6) units. Only samples containing simultaneous structural order and disorder in their network present the intense visible PL emission at room temperature.

SrBi2(Ta0.5Nb0.48W0.02)(2)O-9 powders (SBTN-W) were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The influence of annealing temperature on the phase formation and specific surface area was evaluated. TG/DTA associated with X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses showed the formation of perovskite phase at around 500-600 degrees C. An orthorhombic structure with A21am space group was identified by Rietveld refinement. BET analysis revealed that the specific surface area reduces with increasing thermal annealing. SEM micrographies showed grains in an almost-spherical morphology with the presence of agglomerates. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
