Non-symbiotic, free living, nitrogen fixing bacteria, Azotobacter sp. was estimated in sediments of estuarine, marine, backwater and mangrove environments of Portonovo. Number of colony forming units (CFU) of Azotobacter sp. was less (5 to 27 cells/g of dry sediment). CFU of total heterotrophic bacteria (THB), actinomycetes and fungi were between 4.1x10 super(6) and 4.5x10 super (7), 0.8x10 super(5) and 4.9x10 super(5), 1.1x10 super(5) and 3.8x10 super(5)/g respectively. Mangrove sediments contained more CFU of the above microbial groups.

Training needs of 80 fishermen in 25 subject areas revealed a mean training need score of 23.0l; 95% wanted to get trained. The training needs were fairly strong in all subject areas, with the highest demand being for fishery engineering. Training need was also high for areas related to fishery technology. Most of the fishermen preferred to have the training at their own village, and in the months of June or July for an average period of 20.85 days. Education and income were positively related to intensity of training needs whereas age, number of family members, number of employed family members and experience in fishing were negatively correlated with it. These six variables explained 27 of the variance in training need intensity.

An examination was made of the rate of penetration of heat into fish sausage during processing at 115.6°C. Findings showed processing for 24 minutes to bring about complete destruction of Clostridium botulinum. A processing time of 30 minutes destroys almost all spoilage-causing organisms, thus prolonging the shelf life of the products.

A modified trap was developed for fishing spiny lobsters. Experimental fishing was conducted using this trap along with traditional trap (as control) to assess the comparative efficiency. Design details and comparative efficiency of the modified trap is reported in this paper. From the analysis of variance, the difference in average catches between the modified trap and the control is found to be highly significant establishing the high efficiency of new trap.

The paper deals with the economic aspects of operation of gill netting and two boat midwater trawling conducted off Cochin. The data collected on two boat midwater trawling and gill netting during 1979 and 1980-81 are presented. Gill netting was profitable at the range of 17.5 and 25.2% while two midwater trawling was profitable at the rate of 18.5 %.

Model combination wire ropes with different covering materials were prepared and worked out specification for the prototype. A table model hand operated wire rope twisting machine was also developed for this. Prototype combination wire rope was twisted in collaboration with M/s South India Wire Ropes Ltd., Alwaye. Specification details, properties and field performance of the prototype studied are reported.

Two trials conducted to demonstrate the suitability of composite carp culture in a small, seasonal, shallow village pond with varied species composition and stocking density indicated the possibility of obtaining higher production with reduced number of species. During the first trial, the Indian major carps, silver carp, common carp and fringe lipped carp were stocked at a density of 5625 fingerlings/ha in the pond in which the maximum water spread area was 1600m². The fish grown over a period of seven months yielded a production of only 242 kg. However, during the second trial, an increase in production by 60.33% was achieved over the same period in the same pond by stocking only the Indian major carps and common carp at a density of 4687.5 fingerlings/ha and feeding them daily with silkworm faecal matter based artificial feed at about 5% of their body weight. The results indicated that for seasonal, shallow ponds stocking of only three species of carps, namely, catla, rohu and common carp would suffice to get optimum yield.

The results of ten months study (September 1983 to July 1984) of the length-weight relationship of males and females of Tilapia mossambicus of the reservoir waters of Idukki Hydel Project show deviation from the cubic relationship of these two parameters. This is due to the retarded growth pattern of this exotic species in this oligotrophic habitat.

Gandhisagar, the second largest reservoir of India is located in Mandsaur district of Madhya Pradesh at latitude 24°44'N and longitude 75°33'E at an altitude of 403.56m MSL in orientation from NE to SE. It has an extensive water spread area of 66000 ha at full reservoir level with a maximum and mean depth of 49.52 and 11.73 m respectively. The maximum length and width of the reservoir are 112 and 16km having a total shore line of 442km. Details of catchment area, bathymetry, standard hydrological data giving water level relation of the basin to water spread area, volume and fish production and the bottom topographical details of 11 experimental fishing stations and 6 fish landing centres are discussed.

Toxicity of inorganic mercury to different life history stages of fresh water fishes, Cyprinus carpio and Cirrhinus mrigala were demonstrated by static bioassays. 48 and 94% of egg hatching occurred in controls at 72 and 24h of experimentation in C. carpio and C. mrigala respectively. While fish eggs in water containing mercuric chloride showed delayed development as compared to the control. LC50, LC100 and safe concentrations of hatchling, fry and fingerling were calculated. Hatchling and fry were observed to be more susceptible as compared to fingerlings of C. carpio and C. mrigala.

The freezing and cold storage characteristics of cuttle fish fillets have been studied. The yield of fillets from cuttle fish was about 35% and the fillet had an average moisture content of 76.85% and fat 0.82% During storage at -20 ± 1°C for 16 months the salt soluble nitrogen of the fillets decreased from 85.1to35.36%, the non-protein nitrogen from 24.61 to 20.84% and alpha amino nitrogen from 252 to 140mg/100g. Initially the fillets were white in colour, showed signs of desiccation by 4 months storage which increased on further storage and the fillets finally became dull white with yellow discolouration inside. The firm and chewy texture of the cooked fillets changed to rubbery even though the product was slightly sweet at the end of that storage period of 16 months.

The bacterial quality and sand content of commercial frozen boiled clam meat are discussed. In general the commercial frozen boiled clam meat belonging to the Villorita cyprinoides sp. collected from Cochin are highly contaminated with faecal indicator and pathogenic organisms than that belonging to the Katelysia opima sp. collected from Quilon. The studies also show that the bacterial quality of frozen boiled clam meat can be improved by enforcing better hygienic and sanitary practices.
