We show that bright-dark vector solitons are possible in biased photorefractive-photovoltaic crystals under steady-state conditions, which result from both the bulk photovoltaic effect and the spatially nonuniform screening of the external bias field. The analytical solutions of these vector solitons can be obtained in the case of \sigma\ much less than 1, where sigma is the parameter controlling the intensities of the two optical beams. In the limit of -1 < sigma much less than 1, these vector solitons can also be determined by use of simple numerical integration procedures. When the bulk photovoltaic effect is neglectable, these vector solitons are bright-dark vector screening solitons studied previously in the \sigma\ much less than 1 regime, and predict bright-dark vector screening solitons in the -1 < sigma less than or equal to 1 regime. When the external bias field is absent, these vector solitons predict bright-dark vector photovoltaic solitons in closed and open circuits. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Based on Stefan-Boltzman and Lambert theorems, the radiation energy distribution on substrate (REDS) from catalyzer with parallel filament geometry has been simulated by variation of filament and system layout in hot-wire chemical vapor deposition. The REDS uniformity is sensitive to the distance between filament and substrate d(f-s) when d(f-s) less than or equal to 4 cm. As d(f-s) > 4 cm, the REDS uniformity is independent of d(f-s) and is mainly determined by filament number and filament separation. Two-dimensional calculation shows that the REDS uniformity is limited by temperature decay at filament edges. The simulation data are in good agreement with experiments. Red shifts of emission wavelength of self-organized In(Cla)As/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) covered by 3 nm thick InxGa1-xAs layer with three different In mole fractions (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3, respectively) have been observed. Transmission electron microscopy images demonstrate that the stress along growth direction in the InAs dots was reduced due to introducing the InxGa1-xAs (x = 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) covering layer instead of GaAs layer. Atomic force microscopy pictures show a smoother surface of InAs islands covered by an In0.2Ga0.8As layer. It is explained by the calculations that the redshifts of the photoluminescence (PL) spectra from the QDs covered by the InxGa1-xAs (x greater than or equal to 0.1) layers were mainly due to the reducing of the strain other than the InAs/GaAs intermixing in the InAs QDs. The temperature dependent PL spectra further confirm that the InGaAs covering layer can effectively suppress the temperature sensitivity of PL emissions. 1.3 mum emission wavelength with a very narrow linewidth of 19.2 mcV at room temperature has been obtained successfully from In,In0.5Ga0.5As/GaAs self-assembled QDs covered by a 3-nm In0.2Ga0.2As strain reducing layer. Silica glass samples were implanted with 1.157 GeV Fe-56 and 1.755 GeV Xe-136 ions to fluences range from 1 x 10(11) to 3.8 x 10(12) ions/cm(2). Virgin and irradiated samples were investigated by ultraviolet (UV) absorption from 3 to 6.4 eV and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The UV absorption investigation reveals the presence of various color centers (E' center, non-bridging oxygen hole center (NBOHC) and ODC(II)) appearing in the irradiated samples. It is found that the concentration of all color centers increase with the increase of fluence and tend to saturation at high fluence. Furthermore the concentration of E' center and that of NBOHC is approximately equal and both scale better with the energy deposition through processes of electronic stopping, indicating that E' center and NBOHC are mainly produced simultaneously from the scission of strained Si-O-Si bond by electronic excitation effects in heavy ion irradiated silica glass. The PL measurement shows three emissions peaked at about 4.28 eV (alpha band), 3.2 eV (beta band) and 2.67 eV (gamma band) when excited at 5 eV. The intensities of alpha and gamma bands increase with the increase of fluence and tend to saturation at high fluence. The intensity of beta band is at its maximum in virgin silica glass and it is reduced on increasing the ions fluence. It is further confirmed that nuclear energy loss processes determine the production of alpha and gamma bands and electronic energy loss processes determine the bleaching of beta band in heavy ion irradiated silica glass. In the present work, several carbon supported PtSn and PtSnRu catalysts were prepared with different atomic ratios and tested in direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFC) operated at lower temperature (T=90 degreesC). XRD and TEM results indicate that all of these catalysts consist of uniform nano-sized particles of narrow distribution and the average particle sizes are always less than 3.0 nm. As the content of Sn increases, the Pt lattice parameter becomes longer. Single direct ethanol fuel cell tests were used to evaluate the performance of carbon supported PtSn catalysts for ethanol electro-oxidation. It was found that the addition of Sn can enhance the activity towards ethanol electro-oxidation. It is also found that a single DEFC of Pt/Sn atomic ratioless than or equal to2, "Pt1Sn1/C, Pt3Sn2/C, and Pt2Sn1/C" shows better performance than those with Pt3Sn1/C and Pt4Sn1/C. But even adopting the least active PtSn catalyst, Pt4Sn1/C, the DEFC also exhibits higher performance than that with the commercial Pt1Ru1/C, which is dominatingly used in PEMFC at present as anode catalyst for both methanol electro-oxidation and CO-tolerance. At 90 degreesC, the DEFC exhibits the best performance when Pt2Sn1/C is adopted as anode catalysts. This distinct difference in DEFC performance between the catalysts examined here is attributed to the so-called bifunctional mechanism and to the electronic interaction between Pt and Sn. It is thought that -OHads, Surface Pt active sites and the ohmic effect of PtSn/C catalyst determines the electro-oxidation activity of PtSn catalysts with different Pt/Sn ratios. LaMnxAl12-xO19 catalysts were prepared from NH4OH and metal nitrates solutions. Supercritical drying (SCD) and conventional oven drying (CD) methods were used to extract the water in the hydrogel. The effects of drying methods on properties of the catalysts were investigated by means of TEM, N-2-adsorption, thermogravimetry (TG)-differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction. SCD method is beneficial to maintain high surface area and improving catalytic activity for methane combustion of the catalyst. The specific surface area and pore volume of LaMn1Al11O19 catalyst prepared by SCD method are 28 m(2)/g and 0.23 cm(3)/g, respectively, and the ignition of methane could be carried out at 450degreesC. However, those of the CD catalyst prepared from the same precursor are 15 m(2)/g, 0.11 cm(3)/g and 530 degreesC, respectively. Suitable Mn content (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2) could promote the formation of LaMnAl11O19 hexaaluminate, while further addition of Mn (2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 6) cause the formation of LaMnO3. Molar heat capacities of ibuprofen were precisely measured with a small sample precision automated adiabatic calorimeter over the temperature range from 80 to 400 K. The polynomial functions of C-p,C-m (J K-1 mol(-1)) versus T were established on the heat capacity measurements by means of the least fitting square method. The functions are as follows: for solid ibuprofen, at the temperature range of 79.105 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 333.297 K, C-p,C-m = 144.27 + 77.046X + 3.5171X(2) + 10.925X(3) + 11.224X(4), where X = (T - 206.201)/127.096; for liquid ibuprofen, at the temperature range of 353.406 K less than or equal to T less than or equal to 378.785 K, C-p,C-m = 325.79 + 8.9696X - 1.6073X(2) - 1.5145 X-3, where X = (T - 366.095)/12.690. A fusion transition at T = 348.02 K was found from the C-p-T curve. The molar enthalpy and entropy of the fusion transition were determined to be 26.65 kJ mol(-1) and 76.58 J mol(-1) K-1, respectively. The thermodynamic functions on the base of the reference temperature of 298.15 K, (H-T - H-298.15) and (S-T - S-298.15), were derived. Thermal characteristic of ibuprofen was studied by thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG-DTG) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The temperature of fusion, the molar enthalpy and entropy of fusion obtained by DSC were well consistent with those obtained by adiabatic calorimeter. The evaporation process of ibuprofen was investigated further by TG and DTG, and the activation energy of the evaporation process was determined to be 80.3 +/- 1.4 kJ mol(-1). (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Silver impregnated H-ZSM-5 zeolite catalysts with silver loading from 3 to 15 wt.% were investigated for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with CH4 in the excess of oxygen. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Vis measurements established the structure of silver catalysts. A relationship between the structure of silver catalysts and their catalytic functions for the SCR of NOx by CH4 was clarified. The NO conversion to N-2 showed a S-shape dependence on the increase of Ag loading. No linear dependence of catalytic activity on the amount of silver ions in the zeolite cation sites was observed. Contrastively, the activity was significantly enhanced by the nano-sized silver particles formed on the higher Ag loading samples (greater than or equal to7 wt.%). Temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) studies showed that nano-silver particles provided much stronger adsorption centers for active intermediates NO3-(s) on which adsorbed NO3-(s) could be effectively reduced by the activated methane. Silver ions in the zeolite cation sites might catalyze the reaction through activation of CH4 at lower temperatures. Activated CH4 reacted with NO3-(s) adsorbed on nano-silver particles to produce N-2 and CO2. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The surface sites of MoP/SiO2 catalysts and their evolution under sulfiding conditions were characterized by IR spectroscopy using CO as the probe molecule. The HDS activities of thiophene were measured on the MoP/SiO2 catalyst that was subjected to different sulfidation and reactivation pretreatments. Cus Modelta+ (0 < delta less than or equal to 2) sites are probed on the surface of fresh MoP/SiO2 by molecularly adsorbed CO, exhibiting a characteristic IR band at 2045 cm(-1). The surface of MoP/SiO2 is gradually sulfided in HDS reactions, as revealed by the shift of the IR band at 2045 to ca. 2100 cm(-1). Although the surface of a MoP/SiO2 catalyst becomes partially sulfided, the HDS activity tests show that MoP/SiO2 is fairly stable in the initial stage of the HDS reaction, providing further evidence that molybdenum phosphide is a promising catalytic material for industrial HDS reactions. Two kinds of surface sulfur species are formed on the sulfided catalyst: reversibly and irreversibly bonded sulfur species. The MoP/SiO2 catalyst remains stable in the HDS of thiophene because most sulfur species formed under HDS conditions are reversibly bonded on the catalyst surface. A detrimental effect of presulfidation on the HDS activity is observed for the MoP/SiO2 catalyst treated by H2S/H-2 at temperatures higher than 623 K, which is ascribed to the formation of a large amount of the irreversibly bonded sulfur species. The irreversibly sulfided catalyst can be completely regenerated by an oxidation and a subsequent reduction under mild conditions. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The transient state (as the defined point where no enantioseparation is obtained in a dual chiral selector system) of chiral recognition of aminoglutethimide in a binary mixture of neutral cyclodextrins (CDs) was studied by capillary electrophoresis (CE). The following three dual selector systems were used: alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD); alpha-CD and heptakis(di-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin) (DM-beta-CD); alpha-CD and heptakis(tri-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin) (TM-beta-CD). The S-(-) enantiomer of the analyte was more strongly retained in the presence of either alpha-CD or TM-beta-CD at pH 2.5, 100 mM phosphate buffer, while the R-(+) enantiomer was more strongly retained in the presence of either P-CD or DM-P-CD. In the more simple case, the elution order is invariably kept if the enantiomers have the same elution order in either one of the two hosts of the binary mixture. In contrast, the elution order may be switched by varying the concentration ratio of two hosts that produce opposite elution order for this particular analyte. In such a dual selector system, the enantioselectivity will disappear at the transient state at a certain ratio of host,:host, Moreover, the migration times of the two enantiomers with host, alone (diluted in buffer) is approximately equal to the migration times at the corresponding concentration of host, alone (diluted in buffer), where the ratio of concentrations of host,:host, is the same as in the binary mixture at the transient state. As found by nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, the analyte is forming a 1:1 complex with either one of the CDs applied. From this finding, a theoretical model based on the mobility difference of the two enantiomers was derived that was used to simulate the transient state. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The electrochemical behavior of ionizable drugs (Amitriptyline, Diphenhydramine and Trihexyphenedyl) at the water/1,2-dichloroethane interface with the phase volume ratio (r = V-o/V-w) equal to 1 are investigated by cyclic voltammetry. The system is composed of an aqueous droplet supported at an Ag/AgCl disk electrode and it was covered with an organic solution. In this manner, a conventional three-electrode potentiostat can be used to study the ionizable drugs transfer process at a liquid/liquid interface. Physicochemical parameters such as the formal transfer potential, the Gibbs energy of transfer and the standard partition coefficients of the ionized forms of these drugs can be evaluated from cyclic voltammograms obtained. The obtained results have been summarized in ionic partition diagrams, which are a useful tool for predicting and interpreting the transfer mechanisms of ionizable drugs at the liquid/liquid interfaces and biological membranes.

The effect of LB monolayers on the mixed crystal was investigated by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The results show that LB monolayer has selectivity for the different nucleation ions with equal charge numbers and about the same ion radius. The selectivity is dependent on the head groups of monolayer. The monolayer and the doped ions have also an effect on the crystal morphology. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
