This study compared the stress induced in captive estuarine crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus, by two different handling methods: manual restraint (noosing with ropes) and immobilization by electro-stunning. To stun, a short charge (approx. 6 s) at 110 V was delivered to the back of the necks of C. porosus using a custom-built device, which immobilized the animals for 5-10 min. Immobilized and restrained animals were measured and sexed, and the condition of the skin assessed. Blood samples were taken from some animals immediately after restraint or immobilization. Other animals were returned to their pens to recover for periods of 30 min, 1, 4, 12, 24 or 48 hours after which they were stunned and blood samples taken. Individual animals (mean body length 1.96 m, N=99) were bled only once. Haematocrit and haemoglobin concentrations were measured and plasma samples were analysed for corticosterone, glucose and lactate levels. Following restraint, there were significant increases in haematocrit, haemoglobin, glucose, lactate and corticosterone concentrations in C. porosus. For restrained animals, recovery to baseline levels occurred after approximately 8 hours. The stress response of stunned animals was significantly reduced compared to manually captured and restrained crocodiles. Both groups showed a significant increase in haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration and lactate levels, however the magnitude of change was significantly reduced, and recovery was faster in stunned animals. No increase in either glucose or corticosterone levels occurred with immobilisation. The results imply that immobilization by electro-stunning is much less stressful. (C) 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

In this paper we study the following p(x)-Laplacian problem: -div(a(x)&VERBAR;&DEL; u&VERBAR;(p(x)-2)&DEL; u)+b(x)&VERBAR; u&VERBAR;(p(x)-2)u = f(x, u), x ε &UOmega;, u = 0, on &PARTIAL; &UOmega;, where 1< p(1) &LE; p(x) &LE; p(2) < n, &UOmega; &SUB; R-n is a bounded domain and applying the mountain pass theorem we obtain the existence of solutions in W-0(1,p(x)) for the p(x)-Laplacian problems in the superlinear and sublinear cases. © 2004 Elsevier Inc. It is the present practice that asset revaluation reserve distributions by trustees of discretionary trusts are not taxed in Australia. Are such distributions not meant to be taxed, or have relevant sections in the Income Tax Assessment Acts been overlooked? This article will review how trustees of discretionary trusts perform asset revaluation reserve distributions. It then challenges the current accepted view that they can be distributed tax-free to discretionary beneficiaries by analysing relevant CGT events, which the authors regard as forgotten events. It will be submitted that a discretionary beneficiary in receipt of an asset revaluation reserve distribution may have a capital gain which is required to be included in its assessable income. This liability for tax is regardless of the government's recent introduction of s 109XA to address the practice of asset revaluation reserve distributions bypassing the operation of Div 7A of the ITAA 1936 with such distributions.

Neurons in the developing brain die via apoptosis after DNA damage, while neurons in the adult brain are generally resistant to these insults. The basis for this resistance is a matter of conjecture. We report here that cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs) in culture lose their competence to die in response to DNA damage as a function of time in culture. CGNs at either 1 day in vitro (DIV) or 7 DIV were treated with the DNA damaging agents camptothecin, UV or gamma-irradiation and neuronal survival measured. The younger neurons were effectively killed by these agents, while the older neurons displayed a significant resistance to killing. Neuronal survival did not change with time in culture when cells were treated with C2-ceramide or staurosporine, agents which do not target DNA. The resistance to UV irradiation developed over time in culture and was not due to changes in mitotic rate. Increases in DNA strand breakage, up-regulation of the levels of both p53 and its phosphorylated form and nuclear translocation of p53 were equivalent in both older and younger neurons, indicating a comparable p53 stress response. In addition, we show that treatment of older neurons with pharmacological inhibitors of distinct components of the DNA repair machinery promotes the accumulation of DNA damage and sensitizes these cells to the toxic effects of UV exposure. These data demonstrate that older neurons appear to be more proficient in DNA repair in comparison to their younger counterparts, and that this leads to increased survival after DNA damage.

There is a presumption that invention is good. It provides us with innovative goods, services and ways of doing things leading to greater employment, wealth and health. This article looks at the two recent UK cases regarding statutory extra compensation that may be awarded to employee inventors under the Patents Act 1977. Most universities worldwide and many companies have individual inventor reward schemes. Researchers now work in teams made up of both industry and academic researchers who are often based in different countries where different legal regimes apply. Is leaving the decision to award employees extra financial compensation up to individual companies unfair, unequal and de-motivating? Is having differing legislative systems in different European countries counter productive and a barrier to economic growth? There must be a balance between the inventor and the innovator. Do we have it right and if not what should it be? Within the scope of Russian-German palaeoenvironmental research, Two-Yurts Lake (TYL, Dvuh-Yurtochnoe in Russian) was chosen as the main scientific target area to decipher Holocene climate variability on Kamchatka. The 5x2 km large and 26 m deep lake is of proglacial origin and situated on the eastern flank of Sredinny Ridge at the northwestern end of the Central Kamchatka Valley, outside the direct influence of active volcanism. Here, we present results of a multi-proxy study on sediment cores, spanning about the last 7000 years. The general tenor of the TYL record is an increase in continentality and winter snow cover in conjunction with a decrease in temperature, humidity, and biological productivity after 5000-4500 cal yrs BP, inferred from pollen and diatom data and the isotopic composition of organic carbon. The TYL proxy data also show that the late Holocene was punctuated by two colder spells, roughly between 4500 and 3500 cal yrs BP and between 1000 and 200 cal yrs BP, as local expressions of the Neoglacial and Little Ice Age, respectively. These environmental changes can be regarded as direct and indirect responses to climate change, as also demonstrated by other records in the regional terrestrial and marine realm. Long-term climate deterioration was driven by decreasing insolation, while the short-term climate excursions are best explained by local climatic processes. The latter affect the configuration of atmospheric pressure systems that control the sources as well as the temperature and moisture of air masses reaching Kamchatka.

Benthic and selected planktic foraminifera and stable isotope records were determined in a piston core from the Gulf of Aden, NW Arabian Sea that spans the last 530 ka. The benthic foraminifera were grouped into four principal assemblages using Q-mode Principal Component Analyses. Comparison of each of these assemblages with the fauna of the nearby regions enabled us to identify their specific environmental requirements as a function of variability in food supply and strength of the oxygen minimum zone and by that to use them as indicators of surface water productivity. The benthic foraminiferal productivity indicators coupled with the record of Globigerina bulloides, a planktic foraminifer known to be sensitive to productivity changes in the region, all indicate higher productivity during glacial intervals and productivity similar to present or even reduced during interglacial stages. This trend is opposite to the productivity pattern related to the SW summer monsoon of the Arabian Sea and indicates the role of the NE winter monsoon on the productivity of the Gulf of Aden. A period of exceptionally enhanced productivity is recognized in the Gulf of Aden region between ~60 and 13 kyr indicating the intensification of the NE winter monsoon to its maximal activity. Contemporaneous indication of increased productivity in other parts of the Arabian Sea, unexplained so far by the SW summer monsoon variability, might be related to the intensification of the NE winter monsoon. Another prominent event of high productivity, second in its extent to the last glacial productivity event is recognized between 430 and 460 kyr. These two events seem to correspond to periods of similar orbital positioning of rather low precession (and eccentricity) amplitude for a relatively long period. Glacial boundary conditions seem to control to a large extent the NE winter monsoon variability as also indicated by the dominance of the 100 ka cycle in the investigated time series. Secondary in their importance are the 23 and 41 ka cycles which seem also to contribute to the NE monsoonal variability. Following the identification of productivity events related to the NE winter monsoon in the Gulf of Aden, it is possible now to extend this observation to other parts of the Arabian Sea and consider the contribution of this monsoonal system to the productivity fluctuations preserved in the sedimentary records.

Two further key aspects of prosociality as a sexual signal are explored here. Firstly, the context in which it is used (in particular relationship length), and, second, also the different types of prosocial behaviors that exist in social interactions. Therefore, this commentary can show why prosocial behaviors are biased towards physically attractive individuals, as they can gain valuable information from them.

We consider a class of nonlinear dissipative-dispersive perturbations of the scalar conservation law @tu + div f (u) = 01 and we study the convergence of the approximated solutions to its entropy solution. In particular, we obtain conditions under which the balance between dissipation and dispersion gives rise to the convergence (by DiPerna's measure-valued solution technique).
