Robust climbing in unstructured environments is a long-standing challenge in robotics research. Recently there has been an increasing interest in using adhesive materials for that purpose. For example, a climbing robot using hot melt adhesives (HMAs) has demonstrated advantages in high attachment strength, reasonable operation costs, and applicability to different surfaces. Despite the advantages, there still remain several problems related to the attachment and detachment operations, which prevent this approach from being used in a broader range of applications. Among others, one of the main problems lies in the fact that the adhesive characteristics of this material were not fully understood fin the context of robotic climbing locomotion. As a result, the previous robot often could not achieve expected locomotion performances and "contaminated" the environment with HMAs left behind. In order to improve the locomotion performances, this paper focuses on attachment and detachment operations in robot climbing with HMAs. By systematically analyzing the adhesive property and bonding strength of HMAs to different materials, we propose a novel detachment mechanism that substantially improves climbing performances without HMA traces. © 2012 IEEE.

We have studied the current-voltage properties of a double quantum dot (DQD) connected by leads in arrangements that vary from series to symmetrical parallel configurations, in the presence of strong intradot Coulomb interaction. The influences of the connecting configurations and the difference between dot levels on the magnitude and symmetry of the total current are examined. We find that the connecting configurations of the dots can determine the number of the current paths and in turn determine the magnitude of the current, while the coupling strengths between the dots and the leads together with the difference of dot levels determine the current-voltage symmetry. The negative differential conductance observed in serial DQD can be explained in terms of the reduction of the current paths. (c) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

ZnO nanocrystals were synthesized by hydrolysis in methanol. X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence spectra confirm that good crystallized ZnO nanoparticles were formed. Utilizing those ZnO nanoparticles and poly [2- methoxy-5 - (3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)- 1,4-phenylenevinylene] (MDMO-PPV), light emitting devices with indium tin oxide (ITO)/poly(3,4-oxyethyleneoxy-thiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/ ZnO:MDMO-PPV/Al and ITO/PEDOT:PSS/MDMO-PPV/Al structures were fabricated. Electrolummescence (EL) spectra reveal that EL yield of hybrid MDMO-PPV and ZnO nanocrystals devices increased greatly as compared with pristine MDMO-PPV devices. The current-voltage characteristics indicate that addition of ZnO nanocrystals can facilitate electrical injection and charge transport. The decreased energy barrier to electron injection is responsible for the increased efficiency of electron injection. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this communication, we have carried out a detailed investigation of radiative recombination in n-GaAs homojunction far-infrared detector structures with multilayer emitter (n(+))-intrinsic (i) interfaces by temperature-dependent steady-state photoluminescence measurements. The observation of the emitter-layer luminescence structures has been identified from their luminescence characteristics, in combination with high density theoretical calculation. A photogenerated carrier transferring model has been proposed, which can well explain the dependencies of the luminescence intensities on the laser excitation intensity and temperature. Furthermore, the obtained radiative recombination behavior helps us to offer a proposal to improve the operating temperature of the detector. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

The influence of lateral propagating modes on the threshold current and the spontaneous emission factor in selectively oxidized vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) is investigated based on the mode behaviors of lateral propagating modes and the rate equation model. The numerical results show that the lateral propagating modes may be trapped in the aperture region for the selectively oxidized VCSEL with two oxide layers, one above and one below the active region. The output characteristics of VCSELs can be affected due to the reabsorption of the quasitrapped lateral propagating modes. A lower threshold current can be expected for a VCSEL with double oxide layers than that with a single oxide layer. The numerical results of rate equations also show that a larger spontaneous emission factor can be obtained by fitting the output-input curves for the VCSEL with double oxide layers. High-quality compressively strained In0.63Ga0.37As/InP quantum wells with different well widths (1-11 nm) have been grown coherently on InP substrates using a home-made gas source molecular beam epitaxy (GSMBE) system. The indium composition in the wells of the sample was determined by means of high-resolution X-ray diffraction and its computer simulation. it is found that the exciton transition energies determined by photoluminescence (PL) at 10 K are in good agreement with those calculated using a deformation potential model. Sharp and intense peaks for each well can be well resolved in the 10 K PL spectra. For wells narrower than 4 nm, the line width of the PL peaks are smaller than the theoretical values of the line-width broadening due to 1 hit interface fluctuation, showing that the interface fluctuation of our sample is within 1 ML. For wells of 7 and 9 nm, the PL peak widths are as low as 4.5 meV.

We have studied exciton localization and delocalization effect in GaNAs/GaAs quantum wells (QWs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using photoluminescence (PL) and timeresolved PL measurements. Studied results suggest that, at low temperature and under a conventional CW excitation, measured PL spectra were dominated by localized exciton (LE) emission caused by potential fluctuations in GaNAs layer. However, under short pulse laser excitation, it is different. An extra high-energy PL peak comes out from GaNAs/GaAs QWs and dominates the PL spectra under high excitation and/or at high temperature. By investigation, we have attributed the new PL peak to the recombination of delocalized excitons in QWs. This recombination process competes with the localized exciton emission, which, we believe, constitutes the "S-shaped" temperature-dependent emission shift often reported in ternary nitrides of InGaN and AlGaN in the literature.

\Si1-yCy alloys with carbon composition of 0.5 at.% were successfully grown on n-Si(100) substrate by solid phase epitaxy recraystallization. The result was presented in this paper. With the help of the SiO2 capping layer, rather uniform carbon profile in amorphous Si layer was obtained by dual-energy implantation. Since ion-flow was small and implantation time was long enough, the emergency of beta-SiC was avoided and the dynamic annealing effect was depressed. The pre-amorphization of the Si substrate increased the fraction of the substitutions carbon and the two-step annealing reduced point defects. As a result, Si1-yCy alloys with high quality was recrystallized on Si substrate.

Global transposable characteristics in the complete DNA sequence of the Saccharomyces cevevisiae yeast is determined by using the metric representation and recurrence plot methods. On the basis of the correlation distance of nucleotide strings, 16 chromosome sequences of the yeast, which are divided into 5 groups, display 4 kinds of the fundamental transposable characteristics: a short increasing period, a long increasing quasi-period, a long major value and hardly relevant.

Composite chiral stationary phases (CSPs) were prepared on the basis of cellulose derivatives coated or bonded onto silica. "Molecular exterior" type CSPs were prepared by mixing together two different cellulose tris-derivatives before or after being coated or bonded onto silica, and the "molecular interior" type was obtained by synthesizing non-regioselectively heterosubstituted cellulose derivatives coated or bonded onto silica. For the sake of comparison, the individual phases were also prepared with corresponding cellulose derivatives by coating or bonding approaches, respectively. All of the prepared CSPs were characterized and their chiral recognition properties were evaluated by HPLC with several test racemates. The experimental results demonstrated that the "molecular exterior" CSPs generally exhibit chiral recognition capacities intermediate between those of the two individual phases. However, in the separation of some racemates higher enantioselectivity may be achieved on the "molecular interior" phases than on individual phases, thus broadening the application range of a single cellulose-based CSP.

The thermal and flame-retardant properties of homo- and copolyimides were evaluated. Those containing sulfone linkages in the backbone were found to be more flame retardant. Both properties were dependent on the composition. A polyimide/silica nanocomposite was obtained through sol-gel processing. The effects of the addition of silica an the dispersion, interfacial adhesion, fire resistance, mechanical properties, and thermal stability of the composites were investigated. SEM analysis showed a good dispersion of silica with a diameter of 50-300 nm in the organic matrices. The addition of silica increased the fire retardancy and mechanical properties of the composites. Dry mass, nitrogen and phosphorus content in belowground litter of four emergent macrophytes (Typha glauca Godr., Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin., Scolochloa festucacea (Willd.) Link and Scirpus lacustris L.) were followed for 1.2 years in a series of experimental marshes, Delta Marsh, Manitoba. Litter bags containing roots and rhizome materials of each species were buried in unflooded soil, or soil flooded at three water depths (1–30, 31–60, > 60 cm). There were few differences in dry mass loss in unflooded or flooded soils, and depth of flooding also had little effect on decomposition rates. In the flooded sites, Scolochloa and Phragmites roots lost more mass (48.9–63.8% and 59.2–85.5%, respectively) after 112 days than Typha and Scirpus (36.3–43.6 and 37.0–47.2%, respectively). These differences continued through to the end of the study, except in the shallow sites where Scirpus roots lost more mass and had comparable mass remaining as Scolochloa and Phragmites. In the unflooded sites, there was little difference between species. All litters lost nitrogen (22.9–90.0%) and phosphorus (46.3–92.7%) during the first 112 days, then levels tended to remain constant. Decay rates for our belowground root and rhizome litters were comparable to published literature values for aboveground shoot litter of the same species, except for Phragmites roots and rhizomes which decomposed at a faster rate (−k = 0.0014−0.0032) than shoots (−k = 0.0003−0.0007, [van der Valk, A.G., Rhymer, J.M., Murkin, H.R., 1991. Through leaching experiments and simulated rainfall experiments, characteristics of vertical leaching of exogenous rare earth elements (REEs) and phosphorus (P) and their losses with surface runoff during simulated rainfall in different types of soils (terra nera soil, cinnamon soil, red soil, loess soil, and purple soil) were investigated. Results of the leaching experiments showed that vertical transports of REEs and P were relatively low, with transport depths less than 6 cm. The vertical leaching rates of REEs and P in the different soils followed the order of purple soil > terra nera soil > red soil > cinnamon soil > loess soil. Results of the simulated rainfall experiments (83 mm h(-1)) revealed that more than 92% of REEs and P transported with soil particles in runoff. The loss rates of REEs and P in surface runoff in the different soil types were in the order of loess soil > terra nera soil > cinnamon soil > red soil > purple soil. The total amounts of losses of REEs and P in runoff were significantly correlated.

The crystallization detail of polyethylene (PE) has been scarcely studied via in-situ approach since it is an extremely fast process. In this work, optical microscopy is used to investigate crystallization details and characteristics of windmill-like polyethylene crystals. It has been shown that the straight edges of the petals appear firstly and grow in pairs from their central junctions, which subsequently induce the surrounding domains in between each pairs of petals to nucleate and crystallize into twisted lamellar overgrowths. The remaining terrace-stacked lamellae which form curved edges of the petals start to develop only after the straight edges of the petals together with the twisted lamellar overgrowths have completed their growth. It is confirmed that the preferential growth direction of these petals are along crystallographic [113] axis, which has an angle of 65, with the typical direction along b-axis adopted also by the twisted lamellar overgrowths.

This feature article highlights work from the authors' laboratories on the various kinds of oxide optical materials, mainly luminescence and pigment materials with different forms (powder, core-shell structures, thin film and patterning) prepared by the Pechini-type sol-gel (PSG) process. The PSG process, which uses the common metal salts (nitrates, acetates, chlorides, etc.) as precursors and citric acid (CA) as chelating ligands of metal ions and polyhydroxy alcohol (such as ethylene glycol or poly ethylene glycol) as a cross-linking agent to form a polymeric resin on molecular level, reduces segregation of particular metal ions and ensures compositional homogeneity. This process can overcome most of the difficulties and disadvantages that frequently occur in the alkoxides based sol-gel process.
