This thesis deals with the synthesis, characterisation and catalytic activity studies of some new transition metal complexes of the Schiff bases, derived from quinoxaline—2—carboxaldehyde. The model complexes derived from specially designed and synthesised Schiff bases help us to understand the chemistry of biological systems. Schiff bases derived from heterocyclic aldehydes like quinoxaline-2-carboxaldehyde provide great structural diversity during complexation. The Schiff bases synthesised in the present study ' are quinoxaline—2—carboxa.lidene-2-aminophenol (QAP). quinoxaline—2carboxaldehyde semicarbazone (QSC), quinoxaline-2—carboxalidene—o— phenylenediamine (QOD) and quinoxaline-2-carboxalidene-2-furfurylamine (QFA). The elucidation of the structure of these complexes is done using conductance, magnetic susceptibility measurements. infrared, UV—Vis and EPR spectral studies.

The work embodied in the thesis is divided into eight chapters. Chapter I gives a brief introduction about metal complexes of thiosemicarbazones, including their structural and bonding properties. Chapter 2 deals with the synthesis and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of various thiosemicarbazones used up for the present investigations and various characterization techniques. Chapter 3 deals with synthesis, spectral and structural studies of Cu(U) complexes with ONS donor thiosemicarbazones. Chapter 4 deals with synthesis and spectral studies of Ni(II) complexes \vith 2-hydroxyacetophenone N(4)-cyclohexyl thiosemicarbazone as the ligand. Chapter 5 includes synthesis and spectral studies of Mn(II) complexes. Chapter 6 deals with synthesis, spectral and structural studies of Zn(II) complexes. Chapter 7 includes synthesis and spectral studies of oxovanadium(IV) complexes. Chapter 8 deals with synthesis, spectral and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of dioxomolybdenum(VI) complexes.

A series of vanadium-niobium oxide catalysts in which the vanadia content varies between 0.3 and 18mol%was prepared by coprecipitation. These catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy ion scattering (LEIS), and by catalytic testing in the oxidative dehydrogenation reaction of propane. The results of the surface analysis by XPS and LEIS are compared. It is concluded that the active site on the catalyst surface contains 2.0 ± 0.3 vanadium atoms on average. This can be understood byassuming the existenceof two or three different sites:isolated vanadium atoms, pairs of vanadium atoms, or ensembles of three vanadium atoms. At higher vanadium concentration more vanadium clusters with a higher activity are at the surface.LEIS revealed that as the vanadium concentration in the catalyst increases, vanadium replaces niobium at the surface. At vanadium concentrations above 8 mol%, new phases such as P-(Nb, V)20S which are less active because vanadium is present in isolated sites are formed, while the vanadium surface concentration shows a slight decrease

An interesting series of nine new copper(II) complexes [Cu2L2(OAc)2] H2O (1), [CuLNCS] ½H2O (2), [CuLNO3] ½H2O (3), [Cu(HL)Cl2] H2O (4), [Cu2(HL)2(SO4)2] 4H2O (5), [CuLClO4] ½H2O (6), [CuLBr] 2H2O (7), [CuL2] H2O (8) and [CuLN3] CH3OH (9) of 2-benzoylpyridine-N(4)-phenyl semicarbazone (HL) have been synthesized and physico-chemically characterized. The tridentate character of the semicarbazone is inferred from IR spectra. Based on the EPR studies, spin Hamiltonian and bonding parameters have been calculated. The g values, calculated for all the complexes in frozen DMF, indicate the presence of the unpaired electron in the dx2 y2 orbital. The structure of the compound, [Cu2L2(OAc)2] (1a) has been resolved using single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The crystal structure revealed monoclinic space group P21/n. The coordination geometry about the copper(II) in 1a is distorted square pyramidal with one pyridine nitrogen atom, the imino nitrogen, enolate oxygen and acetate oxygen in the basal plane, an acetate oxygen form adjacent moiety occupies the apical position, serving as a bridge to form a centrosymmetric dimeric structure

A comparat ive study of the effect oflaser in inducing chro mosomal aberrat ions at 4gg nm was done in View j aba L. (faba bean) and Allium ccpa L. (onion) with Argon ion laser (Spectra Physics Model 171). Seeds and bulbs of V.jaba and A. eepa were subjected to laser irra diation by 4gg nm excitations from Argon ion laser source at power levels 200 and 400 mW with power densities 2.25 mW em" and 4.49 mW em" and ditTerent exposure times (10, 20, 30 & 40 minutes). Similar to the effect of oth er physical and chemical mutagens, laser caused a dose dependent decrease in mitotic index and a rise in mitotic aberrations when compared to the control. In both plant species, mutations were observed in all stages of mitotic cell cycle. The total percentage of aberrations was two fold higher at 400 mW than at 200 mW exposure.

In this venture three distinct class of catalysts such as, pillared clays and transition metal loaded pillared clays , porous clay heterostructures and their transition metal loaded analogues and DTP supported on porous clay heterostructures etc. were prepared and characterized by various physico chemical methods. The catalytic activities of prepared catalysts were comparatively evaluated for the industrially important alkylation, acetalization and oxidation reactions.The general conclusions drawn from the present investigation are  Zirconium, iron - aluminium pillared clays were synthesized by ion exchange method and zirconium-silicon porous heterostructures were Summary and conclusions 259 prepared by intergallery template method. Transition metals were loaded in PILCs and PCHs by wet impregnation method.  Textural and acidic properties of the clays were modified by pillaring and post pillaring modifications.  The shift in 2θ value to lower range and increase in d (001) spacing indicate the success of pillaring process.  Surface area, pore volume, average pore size etc. increased dramatically as a result of pillaring process.  Porous clay heterostructures have higher surface area, pore volume, average pore diameter and narrow pore size distribution than that of pillared clays.  The IR spectrum of PILCs and PCHs are in accordance with literature without much variation compared to parent montmorillonite which indicate that basic clay structure is retained even after modification.  The silicon NMR of PCHs materials have intense peaks corresponding to Q4 environment which indicate that mesoporous silica is incorporated between clay layers.  Thermo gravimetric analysis showed that thermal stability is improved after the pillaring process. PCH materials have higher thermal stability than PILCs.  In metal loaded pillared clays, up to 5% metal species were uniformly dispersed (with the exception of Ni) as evident from XRD and TPR analysis. Chapter 9 260  Impregnation of transition metals in PILCs and PCHs enhanced acidity of catalysts as evident from TPD of ammonia and cumene cracking reactions.  For porous clay heterostructures the acidic sites have major contribution from weak and medium acid sites which can be related to the Bronsted sites as evident from TPD of ammonia.  Pillared clays got more Lewis acidity than PCHs as inferred from α- methyl styrene selectivity in cumene cracking reaction.  SEM images show that layer structure is preserved even after modification. Worm hole like morphology is observed in TEM image of PCHs materials  In ZrSiPCHS, Zr exists as Zr 4+ and is incorporated to silica pillars in the intergallary of clay layers as evident from XPS analysis.  In copper loaded zirconium pillared clays, copper exists as isolated species with +2 oxidation state at lower loading. At higher loading, Cu exists as clusters as evident from reduction peak at higher temperatures in TPR.  In vanadium incorporated PILCs and PCHs, vanadium exist as isolated V5+ in tetrahedral coordination which is confirmed from TPR and UVVis DRS analysis.  In cobalt loaded PCHs, cobalt exists as CoO with 2+ oxidation state as confirmed from XPS.  Cerium incorporated iron aluminium pillared clay was found to be the best catalyst for the hydroxylation of phenol in aqueous media due to the additional surface area provided by ceria mesopores and its redox properties. Summary and conclusions 261  Cobalt loaded zirconium porous clay heterostructures were found to be promising catalyst for the tertiary butylation of phenol due to higher surface area and acidic properties.  Copper loaded pillared clays were found to be good catalyst for the direct hydroxylation of benzene to phenol.  Vanadium loaded PCHs catalysts were found to be efficient catalysts for oxidation of benzyl alcohol.  DTP was firmly fixed on the mesoporous channels of PCHs by Direct method and functionalization method.  DTP supported PCHs catalyst were found to be good catalyst for acetalization of cyclohexanone with more than 90% conversion.

This work focuses on the analysis of the influence of environment on the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of carbon ions on molecular level. Due to the high relevance of RBE for medical applications, such as tumor therapy, and radiation protection in space, DNA damages have been investigated in order to understand the biological efficiency of heavy ion radiation. The contribution of this study to the radiobiology research consists in the analysis of plasmid DNA damages induced by carbon ion radiation in biochemical buffer environments, as well as in the calculation of the RBE of carbon ions on DNA level by mean of scanning force microscopy (SFM). In order to study the DNA damages, besides the common electrophoresis method, a new approach has been developed by using SFM. The latter method allows direct visualisation and measurement of individual DNA fragments with an accuracy of several nanometres. In addition, comparison of the results obtained by SFM and agarose gel electrophoresis methods has been performed in the present study. Sparsely ionising radiation, such as X-rays, and densely ionising radiation, such as carbon ions, have been used to irradiate plasmid DNA in trishydroxymethylaminomethane (Tris buffer) and 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid (HEPES buffer) environments. These buffer environments exhibit different scavenging capacities for hydroxyl radical (HO0), which is produced by ionisation of water and plays the major role in the indirect DNA damage processes. Fragment distributions have been measured by SFM over a large length range, and as expected, a significantly higher degree of DNA damages was observed for increasing dose. Also a higher amount of double-strand breaks (DSBs) was observed after irradiation with carbon ions compared to X-ray irradiation. The results obtained from SFM measurements show that both types of radiation induce multiple fragmentation of the plasmid DNA in the dose range from D = 250 Gy to D = 1500 Gy. Using Tris environments at two different concentrations, a decrease of the relative biological effectiveness with the rise of Tris concentration was observed. This demonstrates the radioprotective behavior of the Tris buffer solution. In contrast, a lower scavenging capacity for all other free radicals and ions, produced by the ionisation of water, was registered in the case of HEPES buffer compared to Tris solution. This is reflected in the higher RBE values deduced from SFM and gel electrophoresis measurements after irradiation of the plasmid DNA in 20 mM HEPES environment compared to 92 mM Tris solution. These results show that HEPES and Tris environments play a major role on preventing the indirect DNA damages induced by ionising radiation and on the relative biological effectiveness of heavy ion radiation. In general, the RBE calculated from the SFM measurements presents higher values compared to gel electrophoresis data, for plasmids irradiated in all environments. Using a large set of data, obtained from the SFM measurements, it was possible to calculate the survive rate over a larger range, from 88% to 98%, while for gel electrophoresis measurements the survive rates have been calculated only for values between 96% and 99%. While the gel electrophoresis measurements provide information only about the percentage of plasmids DNA that suffered a single DSB, SFM can count the small plasmid fragments produced by multiple DSBs induced in a single plasmid. Consequently, SFM generates more detailed information regarding the amount of the induced DSBs compared to gel electrophoresis, and therefore, RBE can be calculated with more accuracy. Thus, SFM has been proven to be a more precise method to characterize on molecular level the DNA damage induced by ionizing radiations.

Self-consistent-field calculations for the total potential energy of highly ionized N_2 molecules are presented. We compare these calculations to the experimentally observed energy released in the Coulomb explosion of ionized N_2 molecules created after collision with fast heavy ions. The most important electronic states of the fragment ions are determined.

Using the independent particle model as our basis we present a scheme to reduce the complexity and computational effort to calculate inclusive probabilities in many-electron collision system. As an example we present an application to K - K charge transfer in collisions of 2.6 MeV Ne{^9+} on Ne. We are able to give impact parameter-dependent probabilities for many-particle states which could lead to KLL-Auger electrons after collision and we compare with experimental values.

A realistic self-consistent charge correlation diagram calculation of the Kr{^2+} - Kr{^2+} system has been performed. We get excellent agreement for the 4(3/2)_u level with an experimentally observed MO level at large distances. Possible reasons for discrepancies between experiment and theory at small distances are discussed.

The time dependent Dirac equation which describes a heavy ion-atom collision system is solved via a set of coupled channel equations with energy eigenvalues and matrix elements which are given by a selfconsistent field many electron calculation. After a brief discussion of the theoretical approximations and the connection of the many particle with the one particle interpretation we discuss first results for the systems F{^8+} - Ne and F{^6+} - Ne. The resulting P(b) curves for the creation of a Ne K-hole are in good agreement with the experimental results.

We report on the first femtosecond time-resolved experiments in cluster physics. The photofragmentation dynamics of small sodium cluster ions Na_n ^+ have been studied with pump-probe techniques. Ultrashort laser pulses of 60-fs duration are employed to photoionize the sodium clusters and to probe the photofragments. We find that the ejection of neutral dimer Na_2 and, observed for the first time, neutral trimer Na_3 photofragments occur on ultrashort time scales of 2.5 and 0.4 ps, respectively. This and the absence of cluster heating reveals that direct photoinduced fragmentation processes are important at short times rather than the statistical unimolecular decay.

A Ramsey-type interferometer is suggested, employing a cold trapped ion and two time-delayed offresonant femtosecond laser pulses. The laser light couples to the molecular polarization anisotropy, inducing rotational wavepacket dynamics. An interferogram is obtained from the delay dependent populations of the final field-free rotational states. Current experimental capabilities for cooling and preparation of the initial state are found to yield an interferogram visibility of more than 80%. The interferograms can be used to determine the polarizability anisotropy with an accuracy of about ±2%, respectively ±5%, provided the uncertainty in the initial populations and measurement errors are confined to within the same limits.

Desarrollar el concepto de Educaci??n Ambiental que se refleja en el proyecto Anida, y que consiste en un proceso educativo global que trata de capacitar al educando para: estudiar cient??fica e interdisciplinarmente el medio ambiente; desarrollar una actitud responsable ante la utilizaci??n de los recursos naturales; analizar cr??ticamente la gesti??n del medio en sus distintas escalas: local, regional, nacional y planetaria participar de forma activa en la b??squeda de soluciones - apreciar los valores de un medio ambiente libre, equilibrado, sano y enriquecedor en sus tres facetas: natural, social y cultural. El objeto del trabajo es desarrollar un ??rea natural constitu??da por el Macizo calc??reo de Pe??a Cabarga y en ella desarrollar una serie de itinerarios did??ctico-ambientales como el que se expone en este trabajo. El trabajo va desarrollando las paradas a realizar dentro de este itinerario, 2: el eucaliptal, los elementos del paisaje, la ladera caliza carstificada, los prados de siega y el encinar c??ntabro. Analizando en cada una de ellas las variables: flora, fauna, paisaje, rocas, tierra, actividades humanas sobre el medio ambiente, infraestructura, etc.. La informaci??n se ha obtenido realizando un estudio del ??rea natural de Pe??a Cabarga, y a trav??s de un seminario permanente de Educaci??n Ambiental de Cantabria, en el que se aportaban las experiencias y los problemas surgidos a cada profesor. Se analiza conceptualmente cada uno de los aspectos m??s importantes a tener en cuenta en cada una de las paradas del itinerario. El resultado es este cuadernillo dirigido al profesor en el que se va desarrollando todo el itinerario, analizando desde el principio las actividades que ha de desarrollar el profesor para conseguir los objetivos, el material que ha de utilizar, cu??les son las especies que se va a encontrar y c??mo tratarlas, c??mo organizar la clase para la realizaci??n del itinerario, los aspectos m??s importantes a destacar en cada una de las paradas. La pr??ctica de las t??cnicas y metodolog??as adecuadas para el estudio del medio va a dotar al alumno de los conocimientos cient??ficos sobre el mismo, pero adem??s va a desarrollar su capacidad de an??lisis cr??tico de la gesti??n ambiental.

El cuaderno va proponiendo la manera de que el alumno analice y recopile informaci??n en cada una de las paradas a realizar dentro de este itinerario sobre las variables independientes: flora, fauna, paisaje, rocas, tierra, actividades humanas sobre el medio ambiente, infraestructura, etc.. La informaci??n se ha obtenido realizando un estudio del ??rea natural de Pe??a Cabarga, y a trav??s de un seminario permanente de Educaci??n Ambiental de Cantabria, en el que se aportaban las experiencias y los problemas surgidos a cada profesor. Se plantean una serie de fichas para cada parada en las que se va dando al alumno instrucciones sobre actividades a realizar en cada una de ellas. As??, se proponen la realizaci??n de dibujos, contestar preguntas, observar y-o recorger animales y plantas, rellenar fichas sobre la observaci??n de las aves, reptiles, etc.. El resultado es este cuadernillo dirigido al alumno en el que se va desarrollando todo el itinerario, analizando desde el principio las actividades que ha de realizar el alumno para conseguir los objetivos, el material que ha de utilizar, cu??les son las especies que se va a encontrar y c??mo tratarlas, recalcar cu??les son los aspectos m??s significativos e interesantes a tener en cuenta por el en cada parada. Se les plantea a los alumnos una serie de actividades en el laboratorio y de actividades de gabinete a realizar despu??s de la salida, con el fin de que el alumno afiance los conceptos que ha adquirido durante el itinerario.
