The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of dichlorotris (1,10-phenanthroline) ruthenium (11) [Ru(phen)(3)(2+)] with peroxydisulfate (S2O82-) was first described. The use of carbon paste electrodes, organic solvent modified electrodes, allowed obtaining ECL in purely aqueous solution. The ECL produced by the reaction of electrogenerated C Ru(phen)(3)(2+) with the strongly oxidizing intermediate SO4-., was observed only when the applied potential was negative enough to reduce Ru(phen)(3)(2+). In comparison with Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)/S2O82- ECL, the Ru(phen)(3)(2+)/O-8(2-)/S2O82- ECL was more stable in aqueous solution. It was not affected by the storage of the carbon paste electrodes, and it quenched only at quite high S2O82- concentrations. The ECL intensity was a function of S2O82- concentration, increasing linearly with the S2O82- concentration from 5 X 10(-6) to 2 X 10(-3) mol l(-1), and dropping off sharply at S2O82- concentration higher than 20 mmol l(-1). The proposed ECL method with Ru(phen)(3)(2+) was sensitive and selective for the determination of S2O82-. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a new method of fabricating multilayers on a carbon substrate is presented. First, a uniformly charged carbon surface was prepared through molecular design. Then an ultrathin film consisting of layer-pairs of oppositely charged polymeric cationic poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and silicotungstate, SiW12O404- (SiW12), was grown layer-by-layer onto the grafted carbon substrate using a molecular self-assembly technique and an electrochemical method. The technique allows one to prepare highly adherent, dense and smooth films of polyoxometalates with special properties. By combining cyclic voltammetry (CV) and X-ray (XR) reflectometry, it was determined that the average surface density of SiW12 was 2.10 x 10(-10) mol cm(-2), and the thickness increase per adsorption of PDDA-SiW12 was 1.7 +/- 0.2 nm, indicating that the amount of SiW12 anion per one layer adsorption corresponded to a monolayer coverage. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was also used to examine the surface morphology and determine the grain size distribution and roughness for multilayer films. An increase in root-mean-square (RMS) surface roughness from 7 to 9 Angstrom was observed as the number of layer-pairs in the film increased from 2 to 6. FTIR results showed that the good stability of the multilayer films was due to Coulomb interactions between the SiW12 anion and the polymeric cations PDDA. Moreover, the multilayer films, in acidic aqueous solution, showed good electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of NO2-, and the catalytic currents increased with increasing the layer numbers of SiW12 adsorption. These characteristics of the multilayer films might find potential applications in the field of sensors and microelectronics devices.

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of the Ru(bgy)(3)(2-)/S2O82- system in purely aqueous solution at a carbon paste electrode can be clearly seen with the naked eye for Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) concentrations higher than 1 mmol L-1. The log-log plot of the emmitted light intensity vs. Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) concentration is linear over the region 10(-3)-10(-7) mol L-1 with a correlation coefficient of 0.997. The ECL intensity increases linearly with the S2O82- concentration from 10(-6) mol L-1 up to 0.3 mmol L-1 and drops off sharply at concentrations higher than 1 mmol L-1. In addition, a weak ECL signal was obtained when the potential was biased more negative than -0.6 V even in the absence of S2O82-.

In the investigation of effect of KSCN on the partitioning of lysozyme in PEG2000/ammonium sulfate aqueous two-phase system, it was found that the KSCN could alter the pH difference between the two phases. and thus affect the partition of lysozyme. The relationship between partition coefficients of lysozyme and pH differences between two phases was discussed.

A novel method for the sensitive and selective determination of peroxydisulfate was proposed. It was based on an electrochemiluminescent method with Cr(bpy)(3)(3+). The applied potential was set at -0.5 V in Cr(bpy)(3)(3+) system which was much more positive than those in Ru(bpz)(3)(2+) and Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) systems. A linear calibration was obtained over the range of 7-100 mu mol l(-1) with a correlation coefficient of 0.993. The relative standard deviation was 2% for 10 replicate injections of 0.01 mol l(-1) S2O82- solution. The detection limit (S/N=3) was 1 mu mol l(-1). The method was successfully applied to determination of peroxydisulfate in phase transfer catalysis. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Water insoluble poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) was micronized into narrowly distributed stable nanoparticles. The biodegradation of such PCL nanoparticles in the presence of the enzyme, Lipase PS, was monitored by using laser light scattering because the scattering intensity is directly related to the particle concentration. The PCL and enzyme concentration dependence of the biodegradation rate supports a heterogeneous catalytic kinetics in which we have introduced an additional equilibrium between the inactive and active enzyme/substrate complexes. The initial rate equation derived on the basis of this mechanism was used to successfully explain the influence of surfactant, pH and temperature on the enzymatic biodegradation. Our results confirmed that both the adsorption and the enzymatic catalysis were important for the biodegradation of the PCL nanoparticles. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

We describe here a controlled fabrication of ultrathin monolayer and multilayer films consisting of silicotungstic heteropolyanion SiW12O404- and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) on Au electrodes previously self-assembled with cysteamine monolayers based on layer-by-layer electrostatic interaction. The thus-forming monolayer and multilayer chemically modified electrodes are investigated by cyclic voltammetry on their electrochemical behavior and electrocatalytic properties. The composite ultrathin films exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic effects on the reduction of BrO3-, H2O2, and HNO2. The electrocatalytic effects on HNO2 reduction are enhanced with increasing layer number from 1 to 3 but level off with much thicker multilayers. Four phenothiazines, promethazine, dioxypromethazine, chlorpromazine, and trifluoperazine have been separated by capillary electrophoresis using N, N, -dimethylformamide (DMF) as separation medium with UV absorbance detection. High voltage and concentrated buffer were used with small current and low electroosmosis. Good resolution and high column efficiency were obtained. Separation selectivity in DMI; was different from that in water because of the different solvation interactions. The influence of buffer composition on separation selectivities and electroosmosis were also studied.

Composite polymeric electrolytes of PEO-LiClO4-Al2O3 and PEO-LiClO4-EC were prepared and the ionic conductivity by a.c. impedance was calculated using four different methods, and three kinds of representations of a.c. impedance spectra were adopted. The first is based on the Nyquist impedance plot of the imaginary part (Z") versus the real part (Z') of the complex impedance. The second and the third correspond to the plots of imaginary impedance Z" as a function of frequency (f), and the absolute value (\Z\) and phase angle (theta) as a function of f, respectively. It was found that the values of the ionic conductivity calculated using the three representations of a.c. impedance spectra are basically identical.

The effect of potassium thiocyanate on the partitioning of lysozyme and BSA in polyethylene glycol 2000/ammonium sulfate aqueous two-phase system has been investigated. As a result of the addition of potassium thiocyanate to the PEG/ammonium sulfate system, the PEG/mixed salts aqueous two-phase system was formed. It was found that the potassium thiocyanate could alter the pH difference between the two phases, and, thus, influence the partition coefficients of the differently charged proteins. The relationship between partition coefficient of the proteins and pH difference between two phases has been discussed. It was proposed that the pH difference between two phases could be employed as the measurement of electrostatic driving force for the partitioning of charged proteins in polyethylene glycol 2000/ammonium sulfate aqueous two-phase system.

Polyaniline (PAn) was doped with phosphonic acid containing hydrophilic tails. The solubility of the doped PAn in water was controlled by changing the length of hydrophilic chain in the dopant. When poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEGME) with molecular weight M-w = 550 was used as the hydrophilic chain of the dopant, the doped PAn was entirely soluble in water. The film cast from aqueous solution showed good electrochemical redox reversibility, Aqueous solution blending of PAn with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG, M-w = 20 000) and poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP, M-w = 360 000) was achieved. Percolation threshold of the composite film was lower than 3 wt.%. Electrical conductivity of the composite film was in the range of 10(-1)-10(-5) S cm(-1), depending on molecular weight of the acid and the content of PAn in the composite. Separations of phenothiazines, promethazine(PZ), dioxypromethazine (OZ), chlorpromazine(CZ), trifluoperazine(TfZ) and thioridazine(TZ) by capillary electrophoresis in water and FA media were carried out and compared. Thus different selectivity and resolution were observed as media varying from water to FA. Migration order was PZ, OZ, CZ and TZ in water but (TZ+PZ), CZ and OZ in FA, when the same buffer, 25 mmol/L Tris and 25 mmol/L citric acid, was used. It also has been observed that pH has great effect on selectivity both in water and FA and a possible explanation was given. Separation efficiency was higher in FA media than in water because of the permission of high voltage applied. For all separations in FA 30 kV was applied, and when 25 mmol/L Tris was used as buffer, current was only 20 mu A and complete separation of TZ, CZ, PZ and OZ was achieved with effencicy higher than 3.5 x 10(5) theoretical plates for all analytes. The high performance of capillary electrophoresis in FA suggests that FA is an excellent media separation.

Four novel polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of two new double betaine derivatives have been synthesized and structurally determined. In [{La-2(L-1)(2)(H2O)(9)}(n)]Cl-6n. 2nH(2)O (1) and [{Tb(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. nH(2)O (2) (L-1 =4,4'-trimethylenedipyridinio-N,N'-diacetate), the lanthanide(III) ions form a two-dimensional layer in which each pair of lanthanide(III) ions is bridged by two syn-anti mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups. Adjacent layers are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions, to form a three-dimensional network. Isomorphous [{Ln(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. 5nH(2)O (Ln=La, 3; Ln=Tb, 4; L-2=1,3 bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-propane) each contain a centrosymmetric paddle-wheel-like dimeric unit in which each pair of adjacent metal atoms is bridged by four syn-syn mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups that are oriented nearly perpendicular to each other about the metal-metal axis. Neighboring dimeric subunits are bridged by a pair of flexible LL ligands into a polymeric chain. Adjacent chains are inter-linked by hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions into a three-dimensional network. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

In order to develop photosensitive polyimides (PSPIs) imaged in alkaline aqueous solution, a photosensitive diamine and relevant polymer containing conjugated double bonds in the main chain have been synthesized. The photosensitive characteristics and thermal stability of the polymers were investigated. These polymers possess good thermal stability and sensitivity to UV irradiation, and could be used to form a PSPI resist using alkaline aqueous solution as developer. The cleavage and formation of the di sulfide bond of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT) were examined in an aqueous solution of pH value from 0 to 14 with and without polyaniline (PAn), The redox reaction of DMcT was accelerated by PAn in acidic condition. The cell using this anodic material was set-up and characterized in aqueous electrolyte.
