An electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance was employed to monitor directly the growth of vanadium hexacyanoferrate (VHF) films on platinum substrates during electrodeposition and interfacial coagulation in the solution containing sulfuric acid electrolyte, vanadium(IV) and hexacyanoferrate(III). Mass changes of the gold/crystal working electrode were correlated with cyclic voltammetry data. Effects of cations (NH4+, Li+, Na+ and K+), anions (SO42- and NO3-) and solvent during redox reactions of the films were studied. The results show that cations were incorporated into the film during reduction and expelled from the film during oxidation. Solvent also participates in VHF electrochemistry, and its role cannot be neglected. Anions play no role in VHF electrochemistry. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

The electrochemistry of Prussian blue mixed in a polymer medium containing MClO4 (M = Li+, Na+, K+, TBA(+)) as the supporting electrolyte was studied by means of solid-state voltammetry. This approach is new in Prussian blue studies. The behavior of PB in polymer electrolytes is somewhat similar to the well-known behavior for an electrochemically synthesized PB film in aqueous media. Besides, K+, Li+ and Na+ ions can also transport through the crystal of PB because of its zeolitic nature. The transport of TBA(+) ions is possible. Kinetic control lies in the diffusion of cations in and out of the lattice of Prussian blue. Reduction waves of Prussian blue depend on both the size and type of cations. PB is very stable upon electrochemical cycling in polymer electrolytes and air. This system may be used in rechargeable batteries and electrochromic devices.

The fragmentations of three bifunctional phenylether compounds including 2-(2, 6-dichloro)phenoxyl propionitrile, N-hydroxyl-4-butoxyl phenylacetyl amine(bufexamc) and 2-(1-methylethoxyl) phenol methylcarbamate (Propoxur) under electron impact ionization were reported, Metastable ion(MI) and collision-induced dissociation(CID) at a low energy have been used to study the fragmentation pathways from molecular ions. Apart from the simple bond cleavages, and the unimolecular dissociations via ion/neutral complex intermediate as a competitive mechanism were demonstrated, Moreover, the intramolecular hydrogen transfer and double hydrogen transfers in the fragmentations of these compounds were discussed in detail.

Gas phase adduct of endohedral rare-earth fullerenes Nd@C-S2 with the ion system of benzene-[Nd@C-S2-C6H6](+) was observed for the first time by ion-molecular reaction under chemical ionization condition. The possible reaction passageway and molecular structures of this gas phase adduct were discussed and a parallel "reversed umbrella" pi-pi interaction complex of the [C6H6](+) ion reacting with the neutral rare-earth fullerenes Nd@C-S2 was considered to be much reasonable. The experimental result indicated that endohedral rare-earth fullerenes has relatively active reactivity and aromatic properties similar towards benzene molecular ion in gas phase.

The ion exchange mechanism accompanying the oxidation/reduction processes of cupric hexacyanoferrate-modified platinum electrodes in different aqueous electrolyte solutions has been studied by means of in situ probe beam deflection and the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance technique. The results demonstrate that the charge neutrality of the film during the reoxidation/reduction process is accomplished predominantly by the movement of cations, but anions and/or solvent are also participator(s). Moreover, in KHC8H4O4 (potassium biphthalate) solution, the EQCM data obtained from chronoamperometry experiment are more complicated than those in KCl and K2SO4 solutions. Steady-state voltammograms at a microdisk electrode are used to measure the diffusion coefficient (D) and standard heterogeneous rate constant (k(s)) of ferrocene in polyelectrolyte PEG.MClO(4). The diffusion coefficient and standard heterogeneous rate constant of ferrocene are both smaller in polymer solvents than in monomeric solvents. The D and k(s) of ferrocene have been estimated in PEG containing different concentrations and cations of supporting electrolytes, and the dependencies of D and k(s) on temperature have been observed. These results show that the D and k(s) of ferrocene increase with increasing temperature in polyelectrolyte, and with increasing cation radius of supporting electrolyte, eg D and k(s) increase in the order Bu(4)NClO(4) > NaClO4 > LiClO4. On the other hand, D and k(s) increase with decreasing concentration of supporting electrolyte. The dependence of the half-wave potential (E(1/2)) on the concentration of the supporting electrolyte is also observed. E(1/2) shifts in the negative direction as the concentration of supporting electrolyte increases. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

A Co(salen)-Nafion modified electrode was prepared by immersing a glassy carbon electrode coated with the Nafion film into the aqueous solution with saturated Co(salen), The modified electrode showed a stable electrochemical reaction of Co(salen) at about 0 V(vs, SCE), The result of XPS indicated the valence of cobalt in Co(salen) changes from +2 before to +3 after Co(salen) enters the Nafion film, It is due to forming axis coordination of cobalt with sulfonic group in Nafion film, It was found that the mode of electron transfer in Co(salen)-Nafion modified electrode was controlled by physical diffusion and electron hopping, It was also found that the modified electrode could catalyze the reduction of O-2 to H2O2. The real catalyst may be the adduct of Co-I(salen) and O-2.

The axial coordination effect of F- on the redox behavior of (TPP)Co was investigated and spectroeletrochemistry in dichloroethane. It was verified that mono(F-) axial adduct (TPP)Co(II)(F-) could be reduced at 0.1 V(SCE). and bis(F-) axis adduct (TPP)Co(II)(F-)(2) formed with added F- molar ratio>1 could be reduced at the potential <-0.6 V(SCE). The equilibrium between (TPP)Co(II)(F-) and (TPP)Co(II)(F-)(2) was demonstrated.

C-60 films, prepared by solution casting, were studied by means of in situ probe beam deflection (PBD) combined with cyclic voltammetry (CV). PBD is a powerful technique for investigation of phenomena at the electrode/electrolyte interface in acetonitrile with quaternary ammonium and alkali metal salts as supporting electrolytes. In tetra-n-butylammonium (TBA(+)) salt solution, a stable CV can be obtained during the first two reduction/reoxidation waves. On reduction, injection of cations to maintain charge balance and dissolution of small amount of C-60(-) (TEA(+)) and/or C-60(2-) (TBA(+))(2) are detected. During the reoxidation process ejection of cations and injection of anions occur simultaneously, especially for the second reoxidation wave. In the case where TBABr is the supporting electrolyte, the accompanied behavior is more complicated than in TBABF(4), TBAClO(4), and TBAPF(6) solutions. A small pair of prewaves in CV are proposed due to oxidation/reduction of C-60 domains but not dissolution/redeposition of C-60 film. Extending the potential scan range to the third reduction wave, no apparent corresponding reoxidation wave is related to the third reduction wave, the electroactivity of the film disappears rapidly and dissolution of C-60 film is observed. In tetraethylammonium (TEA(+)) and NAClO(4) solutions, the electrochemistry of the C-60 films is unstable, and potential scans lead to dissolution of flaking of the film.

Eastman-AQ 55D was coated onto a carbon fiber microelectrode surface, and the resulting modified electrodes exhibited high stability. Substantial improvement in the stability was observed as a result of good adhesion and the strong binding of large hydrophobic cations of Eastman AQ 55D. The electrode reaction of meldola blue bound in the polymer film showed a reversible, one-electron transfer process. The effects of solution pH and influence of supporting electrolyte on the modified carbon fiber microelectrode are discussed. The diffusion coefficient of meldola blue in the AQ polymer film determined by chronoamperometry is 2.3 x 10(-18) cm(2) s(-1), and the heterogeneous rate constant of meldola blue at the AQ polymer film/electrode determined by normal pulse voltammetry is 3.97 x 10(-3) cms(-1).

Probe beam deflection(PBD) technique together with electrochemical techniques such as cyclic voltammetry was used to study the ion exchange in prussian blue(PB) film and its analogue indium hexacyanoferrate (InHCF) chemically modified electrodes, The ion exchange mechanism of PB was verified as following: K2Fe2+FeI(CN)(6)(-e--K+)reversible arrow(+e-+K+)KFe(3+)Fe(I)(CN)(6)(-xe--xK+)reversible arrow(+xe-+xK+) [Fe3+FeI(CN)(6)](x)[KFe3+FeI(CN)(6)](1-x) where on reduction in contact with an acidic KCl electrolyte, H+ enter PB film before K+. Both the cations and anions participate concurrently in the redox process of InHCF, meanwhile K+ ion plays a major role in the whole charge transfer process of this film with increasing radii of anions.

The DCI MS of C-60 with the reactions of gaseous cyclohexane and cyclohexene have been studied. Several kinds reactions of C-60 have been observed. The results show that the gasphase C-60 has very active chemical properties. The adduct ions of [C60C4H7](+) and [C60C5H7](+) may be formed by [2+4] cycloaddition where one of double bonds of C-60 acted as a dienophilic unit.

The structure of the title compound, [Er-2(C3H7NO2)(4)- (H2O)(8)](ClO4)(6), consists of dimeric [Er-2(DL-alanine)(4)-(H2O)(8)](6+) cations and perchlorate anions. The four alanine molecules act as bridging ligands linking two Er3+ ions through their carboxyl O atoms. Each Er3+ ion is also coordinated by four water molecules to complete eightfold coordination in a square antiprism fashion. The perchlorate anions and the methyl groups of the alanine ligands are disordered.

Gas phase ion-molecular reactions of C-60 with the ion system of CS2 have been studied in the ion source of mass spectrometer. It was found for the first time that the sulfuric derivative of C-60-C60S+ was the main ions in the ion source, they did not react with C-60 to form adduct ions due to their highly saturated structures. According to the dynamic analysis, the product ion came from the reaction of C-60 with the fragment ion S+. The adduct ion may have the structure of epsulfide that is advantageous in energy.
