En este trabajo se reflexiona sobre la necesidad de un marco epistemológico inclusivo que aborde la multivocalidad de los procesos históricos objeto de estudio y permita crear relatos históricos más plurales y representativos. Pero el relato sobre el pasado será mejor si, además de ser inclusivo a nivel epistemológico, también contribuye de alguna manera a mejorar la sociedad actual. Por ello se reclama una arqueología que incluya una preocupación axiológica y busque posibles ámbitos de aplicación para los resultados de sus investigaciones. Ejemplificamos esta reivindicación con un caso de estudio sobre cerámica, que subraya que los objetos cotidianos fueron y son utilizados en las estrategias de construcción social de la desigualdad. En este contexto se reclama la toma de consciencia de esta práctica en la actualidad y la renuncia a determinados recursos discursivos. Por ejemplo, se propone retomar el concepto inclusivo, este vez para oponerlo a la significación social del adjetivo exclusivo. Aunque todas estas reflexiones derivan de casos de estudio de arqueología histórica, pueden ser útiles a la arqueología en general, sin sesgo cronológico alguno.

Este trabajo pretende explorar la dimensión ritual en los Textos de las Pirámides, el corpus de literatura religiosa extensa más antiguo de la humanidad. La naturaleza variada de sus componentes textuales ha impedido que los egiptólogos comprendan en profundidad las complejidades de la colección y los contextos originales en los que estos textos (ritos) aparecieron. La aplicación de la teoría del ritual, principalmente la aproximación de la sintaxis ritual, ofrece a los investigadores un marco excelente de análisis e interpretación del corpus, su estructura y función. Sujeto a las reglas de la sintaxis ritual es posible exponer los múltiples niveles de significado en el corpus para la resurrección y salvación del difunto.

Este artículo investiga algunos de los valores plásticos y estéticos que presidieron la selección y la preparación de las materias colorantes empleadas para iluminar los códices creados por los nahuas del México Central durante el Posclásico Tardío. Estos códices son interesantes porque análisis arqueométricos y exámenes codicológicos recientes han permitido conocer la materialidad de su capa pictórica, así como las características formales y el comportamiento de los colores en estas obras. Uno de los aportes trascendentales de estos estudios ha sido averiguar que la paleta cromática que sirvió para pintar los códices del México Central era principalmente de origen orgánico, lo que contrasta con la naturaleza de los pigmentos detectados en restos de pintura mural y en esculturas creadas por los nahuas que son sobre todo minerales. El objetivo de este artículo es reflexionar sobre las razones de esas diferencias y demostrar que el uso de los colorantes orgánicos en los códices respondía a un fin plástico específico que concordaba con el canon estético imperante en la sociedad náhuatl.

In 2010 Avella worked with the Yves St Laurent (YSL) textiles research team to find elements for a coating that could be applied to weave surfaces in the form of a ‘laquer’ finish. Working with industrial chemists, Avella designed a Jaquard weave pattern to function as substrate for this laquer coating. Successfully used to make womenswear with a high gloss finish, this textile was patented before being displayed in 2010 and much imitated in other collections. Continuing this research for the following collection Avella pursued experiments in laboratory-based industrial chemistry to find a liquid coating that could, like ‘laquer’, be applied as a surface finish to textiles. The resulting metallic iridescent surface was first used in the 20?? Collection (Intellectual Property YSL). Whilst the culture of neophilia in Womenswear fashion at YSL demands permanent innovation for stylistic rather than functional reasons, the innovations in the surface coatings of textiles has potential instrumentality which Avella brings to the resources of the RCA Materials For Living Research Hub and its Inspiring Matter Biennial Conference (2012). Cross disciplinary knowledge transfer between design practices is fundamental to research as process in the School of Material, and textile, as medium, has particularly conformable properties which are especially valuable to this. Anthropologist Susanne Kuechler describes woven textiles as having ’profound meaning as agents of boundary creation’, and Avella’s textiles innovations explore the complexity of the garment as boundary between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’.

Computer games are significant since they embody our youngsters’ engagement with contemporary culture, including both play and education. These games rely heavily on visuals, systems of sign and expression based on concepts and principles of Art and Architecture. We are researching a new genre of computer games, ‘Educational Immersive Environments’ (EIEs) to provide educational materials suitable for the school classroom. Close collaboration with subject teachers is necessary, but we feel a specific need to engage with the practicing artist, the art theoretician and historian. Our EIEs are loaded with multimedia (but especially visual) signs which act to direct the learner and provide the ‘game-play’ experience forming semiotic systems. We suggest the hypothesis that computer games are a space of deconstruction and reconstruction (DeRe): When players enter the game their physical world and their culture is torn apart; they move in a semiotic system which serves to reconstruct an alternate reality where disbelief is suspended. The semiotic system draws heavily on visuals which direct the players’ interactions and produce motivating gameplay. These can establish a reconstructed culture and emerging game narrative. We have recently tested our hypothesis and have used this in developing design principles for computer game designers. Yet there are outstanding issues concerning the nature of the visuals used in computer games, and so questions for contemporary artists. Currently, the computer game industry employs artists in a ‘classical’ role in production of concept sketches, storyboards and 3D content. But this is based on a specification from the client which restricts the artist in intellectual freedom. Our DeRe hypothesis places the artist at the generative centre, to inform the game designer how art may inform our DeRe semiotic spaces. This must of course begin with the artists’ understanding of DeRe in this time when our ‘identities are becoming increasingly fractured, networked, virtualized and distributed’ We hope to persuade artists to engage with the medium of computer game technology to explore these issues. In particular, we pose several questions to the artist: (i) How can particular ‘periods’ in art history be used to inform the design of computer games? (ii) How can specific artistic elements or devices be used to design ‘signs’ to guide the player through the game? (iii) How can visual material be integrated with other semiotic strata such as text and audio?

This thesis is a case study of a primary school in a highly diverse urban neighbourhood in Sweden. Basic pre-conditions for intercultural school development are studied by examining the overall organisation of teaching, learning and opportunities for collaboration in the investigated case. The study focuses on the targeted support measures to enhance learning for students with an immigrant background: Mother tongue instruction, Swedish as a Second Language, and tutoring in the mother tongue, as well as looking at pedagogical support provided by the school library. The latter has a mission to promote learning and inclusion, where non-native speakers of Swedish are a prioritised group. Communities of practice linked to the work organisation at a meso-level are investigated, and the collaborative relationships between professional groups at the school involved in the various support measures. Teacher relationships and categorisations implied by support measures impact the learning spaces that are shaped for students and the teaching spaces within which teachers work. Collaborative opportunities and convergence of concerns in the teaching spaces combine to shape the overall space for intercultural development. The raw data for the case study consists of interviews, national policy documents and additional information on local work organisation gained through documents and observations. Four articles resulted from the case study, each focusing a specific support measure. An overarching analysis is then made of findings from these articles and the other dimensions of the investigation. The analysis describes the organisation in terms of monocultural or intercultural school cultures, pointing to significant characteristics of the landscapes of practice, with respect to their overall implications for the spaces of school development. In the discussion, findings are considered in relation to research on professional development in education, collaboration, democracy and inclusive schooling. The relative positioning of languages and cultures is given particular attention, to ascertain if the school culture is monocultural or intercultural in the sense given by Lahdenperä (2008), and to what extent it could enable intercultural development. Such positioning plays a role interms of affordances for identity, participation and engagement discussed by Wenger (1998). This case study should be understood against the wider background of recent social developments in Europe linked to globalisation and technological changes. It is argued that looking at the concrete specifics which facilitate or obstruct school development, and simultaneously reflecting on how the different forms of teaching interrelate in the overall organisation and in policy may provide a useful vantage point from which structural changes can be contemplated.The discussion underlines the importance of the physical localisation of activities, continuity in personal contacts and time available for joint pedagogical reflection, as basic conditions for effective intercultural dialogue in the organisation. Finally, the impact of policy is considered, looking at connections between levels of policy, expressed in official steering documents, and conditions for teaching and learning at the level of an individual school.

O presente trabalho visa contribuir com a conceção e implementação de uma plataforma web na área do turismo e da cultura, mais especificamente dedicada ao património (i)material, a cidade de Aveiro. A ambição do projeto é apresentar às pessoas que façam o uso do site www.imaterialaveiro.yolasite.com, o que está por trás de determinados aspetos que caracterizam a cidade de Aveiro, em especial o componente cultural, simbólico e histórico que não pode ser visto facilmente. O projeto tem dois grandes objetivos, o primeiro é fazer um levantamento bibliográfico do que já foi escrito sobre os media locativos e território hipermediatizado, tentando identificar definições dadas por autores diferentes, os exemplos trazidos por esses autores acerca destes media locativos num território hipermediatizado e qual o papel cultural desses dois elementos tecnológicos na atualidade. O segundo grande objetivo é a criação de um mapa virtual baseado em geolocalização. O projeto ImaterialAveiro terá como propósito transmitir através de vídeos o patrimônio (i)material da cidade de Aveiro. A escolha destes patrimônios (i)materiais será um grande desafio no trabalho, tendo em vista que a UNESCO, que é o órgão responsável pela identificação deste tipo de patrimônio, ainda não reconheceu nenhum aspeto da cidade de Aveiro como patrimônio imaterial. Logo, a escolha far-seá com a ajuda dos agentes locais, sendo assim, também, um desafio de cidadania participante. O projeto pretende contribuir para a análise dos media locativos e para a reflexão sobre a sua influência na experiência das cidades, além de deixar para a cidade de Aveiro um exemplo de como interagir com a cultura intangível através da geolocalização.

The work presented herein covers a broad range of research topics and so, in the interest of clarity, has been presented in a portfolio format. Accordingly, each chapter consists of its own introductory material prior to presentation of the key results garnered, this is then proceeded by a short discussion on their significance. In the first chapter, a methodology to facilitate the resolution and qualitative assessment of very large inorganic polyoxometalates was designed and implemented employing ion-mobility mass spectrometry. Furthermore, the potential of this technique for ‘mapping’ the conformational space occupied by this class of materials was demonstrated. These claims are then substantiated by the development of a tuneable, polyoxometalate-based calibration protocol that provided the necessary platform for quantitative assessments of similarly large, but unknown, polyoxometalate species. In addition, whilst addressing a major limitation of travelling wave ion mobility, this result also highlighted the potential of this technique for solution-phase cluster discovery. The second chapter reports on the application of a biophotovoltaic electrochemical cell for characterising the electrogenic activity inherent to a number of mutant Synechocystis strains. The intention was to determine the key components in the photosynthetic electron transport chain responsible for extracellular electron transfer. This would help to address the significant lack of mechanistic understanding in this field. Finally, in the third chapter, the design and fabrication of a low-cost, highly modular, continuous cell culture system is presented. To demonstrate the advantages and suitability of this platform for experimental evolution investigations, an exploration into the photophysiological response to gradual iron limitation, in both the ancestral wild type and a randomly generated mutant library population, was undertaken. Furthermore, coupling random mutagenesis to continuous culture in this way is shown to constitute a novel source of genetic variation that is open to further investigation.

This thesis examines three key moments in the intersecting histories of Scotland, Ireland and England, and their impact on literature. Chapter one Robert Bruce and the Last King of Ireland: Writing the Irish Invasion, 1315- 1826‘, is split into two parts. Part one, Barbour‘s (other) Bruce‘ focuses on John Barbour‘s The Bruce (1375) and its depiction of the Bruce‘s Irish campaign (1315-1318). It first examines the invasion material from the perspective of the existing Irish and Scottish relationship and their opposition to English authority. It highlights possible political and ideological motivations behind Barbour‘s negative portrait of Edward Bruce - whom Barbour presents as the catalyst for the invasion and the source of its carnage and ultimate failure - and his partisan comparison between Edward and his brother Robert I. It also probes the socio-polticial and ideological background to the Bruce and its depiction of the Irish campaign, in addition to Edward and Robert. It peers behind some of the Bruce‘s most lauded themes such as chivalry, heroism, loyalty, and patriotism, and exposes its militaristic feudal ideology, its propaganda rich rhetoric, and its illusions of freedom‘. Part one concludes with an examination of two of the Irish section‘s most marginalised figures, the Irish and a laundry woman. Part two, Cultural Memories of the Bruce Invasion of Ireland, 1375-1826‘, examines the cultural memory of the Bruce invasion in three literary works from the Medieval, Early Modern and Romantic periods. The first, and by far the most significant memorialisation of the invasion is Barbour‘s Bruce, which is positioned for the first time within the tradition of ars memoriae (art of memory) and present-day cultural memory theories. The Bruce is evaluated as a site of memory and Barbour‘s methods are compared with Icelandic literature of the same period. The recall of the invasion in late sixteenth century Anglo-Irish literature is then considered, specifically Edmund Spenser‘s A View of the State of Ireland, which is viewed in the context of contemporary Ulster politics. The final text to be considered is William Hamilton Drummond‘s Bruce’s Invasion of Ireland (1826). It is argued that Drummond‘s poem offers an alternative Irish version of the invasion; a counter-memory that responds to nineteenth-century British politics, in addition to the controversy surrounding the publication of the Ossian fragments. Chapter two, The Scots in Ulster: Policies, Proposals and Projects, 1551-1575‘, examines the struggle between Irish and Scottish Gaels and the English for dominance in north Ulster, and its impact on England‘s wider colonial ideology, strategy, literature and life writing. Part one entitled Noisy neighbours, 1551-1567‘ covers the deputyships of Sir James Croft, Sir Thomas Radcliffe, and Sir Henry Sidney, and examines English colonial writing during a crucial period when the Scots provoked an increase in militarisation in the region. Part two Devices, Advices, and Descriptions, 1567-1575‘, deals with the relationship between the Scots and Turlough O‘Neill, the influence of the 5th Earl of Argyll, and the rise of Sorley Boy MacDonnell. It proposes that a renewed Gaelic alliance hindered England‘s conquest of Ireland and generated numerous plantation proposals and projects for Ulster. Many of which exhibit a blurring‘ between the documentary and the literary; while all attest to the considerable impact of the Gaelic Scots in both motivating and frustrating various projects for that province, the most prominent of which were undertaken by Sir Thomas Smith in 1571 and Walter Devereux, 1st Earl of Essex in 1573.

Enquadramento: Atualmente a prevalência da amamentação à saída da maternidade é elevada, no entanto não temos valores semelhantes quanto ao aleitamento materno exclusivo, nem no seu prolongamento até aos dois anos. Objetivos: Verificar as relações entre a motivação das puérperas para a amamentação e variáveis sociodemográficas e obstétricas e analisar a influência das variáveis sociodemográficas e obstétricas na motivação para a amamentação quando mediadas pela escolaridade da puérpera. Material e métodos: Estudo não experimental, quantitativo, descritivo correlacional e analítico. O tipo de amostragem é não probabilístico por conveniência. O instrumento de colheita de dados foi o questionário, aplicado a 479 puérperas (média de idade 30,56 anos) no dia da alta hospitalar. O questionário permitiu fazer a caracterização da amostra em termos sociodemográficos e obstétricos. Foi ainda utilizada a escala de Motivação para Amamentação de Nelas, Ferreira & Duarte (2008). Resultados: Os resultados obtidos revelam que 86,6% são casadas ou vivem em união de fato e pertencem a uma família nuclear (89,1%). Na amostra, 59,5% tem o Ensino Superior e 73.9% encontra-se empregada e 55,3% reside em meio urbano. A maioria (43,0%), esteve grávida só uma vez e 34.4% já tinha tido uma gestação anterior. São mães pela primeira vez 48,0%, 79,3% realizou seis ou mais consultas tal como o preconizado, e 92,4% planeou a gravidez. A maioria dos partos foi de termo (68,4%). A quase totalidade (9 em cada 10) revela elevada motivação para amamentar. A idade, o estado civil, a residência e as habilitações literárias não influenciam a motivação geral para a amamentação As puérperas desempregadas são as mais motivadas. As puérperas mais motivadas tiveram duas ou mais gestações, e são multíparas. Não foi provada a relação entre as outras variáveis obstétricas e a motivação para a amamentação. A variável mediadora apenas teve impacto com o local de residência, onde as participantes residentes em meio urbano e com ensino superior são as mais motivadas na dimensão fisiológica, seguidas das residentes em meio urbano e com habilitações literárias até ao ensino secundário. Conclusões: Sugerimos a criação de um grupo de trabalho com atuação na comunidade escolar para capacitar os jovens sobre a importância do aleitamento materno, recriando uma 8 cultura de amamentação assente nas orientações emanadas na política de aleitamento materno dos Hospitais amigos dos bebés. Résumé : La gestion des ressources humaines dans les écoles situées au sein de communautés autochtones est marquée par différents enjeux d’ordres social, culturel, ethnoculturel, économique et administratif qui impactent les pratiques de leurs directions. Ceux-ci touchent à tous les aspects de la gestion des écoles et peuvent être révélateurs d’un malaise dans l’encadrement des actrices et des acteurs à travers des structures administratives, juridiques, éducatives ou de gouvernance qui comportent des défis relationnels et interactionnels majeurs. Ce type de malaise peut moduler les actions des actrices et des acteurs des établissements et peut entrainer des impacts dans leurs relations, notamment au niveau de leurs relations de confiance, essentielles à la qualité de leurs actions communes. L’approfondissement de cette problématique porte essentiellement sur les conditions associées à la construction de la confiance qui sont de différents ordres, c’est-à-dire contextuel, institutionnel, organisationnel, relationnel ou individuel. Utilisant une approche qualitative, cette recherche repose sur vingt-trois entrevues semi-dirigées avec des directions d’établissement provenant de dix-sept communautés et de trois nations autochtones différentes. L’analyse est menée à partir d’une approche exploratoire constructiviste et interprétativiste. Les conclusions permettent de dégager que la construction de relations de confiance entre des actrices et des acteurs sont tributaires de conditions dans lesquelles s’inscrivent des dynamiques interactionnelles particulières. Influencées par le contexte autochtone singulier, ces conditions sont préalables aux actrices et aux acteurs ou associées à leurs comportements, attitudes, actions ou pratiques. Il apparait que ces dynamiques s’inscrivent dans une configuration des équipes-écoles se caractérisant par six catégories-types d’individus qui se déclinent selon leur origine et leur appartenance ou leur identité ethnique, à savoir les voyageurs autochtones et allochtones, les étrangers autochtones et allochtones et les natifs autochtones et allochtones. La meilleure compréhension de cette organisation conduit à une conception large de la configuration des dynamiques interactionnelles entre des individus et des groupes et entre des communautés d’individus. Ces individus s’affilient spécifiquement selon des identités ou des appartenances individuelles ou de groupe qui peuvent être de différents ordres soit particulièrement, mais non exclusivement, ethnique, linguistique, familial ou se rapportant à des croyances particulières.

Tangara da Serra is located on southwestern Mato Grosso and is found to be on the route of pollutants dispersion originated in the Legal Amazon s deforestation area. This region has also a wide area of sugarcane culture, setting this site quite exposed to atmospheric pollutants. The objective of this work was to evaluate the genotoxicity of three different concentrations of organic particulate matter which was collected from August through December / 2008 in Tangara da Serra, using micronucleus test in Tradescantia pallida (Trad-MCN). The levels of particulate matter less than 10μm (MP10) and black carbon (BC) collected on the Teflon and polycarbonate filters were determined as well. Also, the alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were identified and quantified on the samples from the burning period by gas chromatography detector with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). The results from the analyzing of alkanes indicate an antropic influence. Among the PAHs, the retene was the one found on the higher quantity and it is an indicator of biomass burning. The compounds indene(1,2,3-cd)pyrene and benzo(k)fluoranthene were identified on the samples and are considered to be potentially mutagenic and carcinogenic. By using Trad-MCN, it was observed a significant increase on the micronucleus frequency during the burning period, and this fact can be related to the mutagenic PAHs which were found on such extracts. When the period of less burnings is analyzed and compared to the negative control group, it was noted that there was no significant difference on the micronuclei rate. On the other hand, when the higher burning period is analyzed, statistically significant differences were evident. This study showed that the Trad-MCN was sensible and efficient on evaluating the genotoxicity potencial of organic matter from biomass burning, and also, emphasizes the importance of performing a chemical composition analysis in order to achieve a complete diagnosis on environmental risk control
