Introduction: Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is characterized by a set of four motor symptoms: tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia and postural instability. These defi cits may predispose individuals to limitations resulting from falls and their secondary consequences. Objective: To evaluate the functional balance and quality of life (QoL) in individuals with PD and determine whether there is correlation between performance on tests of balance with the QoL. Method: The project was referred to the Ethics Committee in Research of Universidade Estadual Paulista “Julio de Mesquita Filho” Campus de Marília and was approved under protocol number 1806/09. Participated in this study with individuals diagnosed with PD between levels one and four in the Hoen and Yahr scale. The subjects were evaluated according to functional balance and QoL, respectively by the instruments: Functional Balance Scale Berg (EEFB), Time Up and Go test (TUG), and Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaire-39 (PDQ-39). To perform the statistical analysis used the GraphPad Prism 5. To perform the correlation analysis for the variables passed normality by the Shapiro-Wilk. Since the variables were non-parametric test was used Spearman. During the analysis the statistical signifi cance level was considered p ≤ 0, 05. Results: We studied 25 individuals aged between 54 and 85 years (71.20 ± 8.50), time of diagnosis between one and 39 years (6.54 ± 7.71) disease. Moderate correlation was found between the EEFB with QoL (r =- 0.6), and TUG with QoL (r = 0.6836). Among the aspects of QoL balance showed a higher correlation with the domains “mobility” (TUG r = 0, 6768; EEFB r = -0.6155) and “Activities of daily living” (TUG r = 0, 7357, and EEFB r = -0.6521). Conclusion: Patients with Parkinson’s disease show defi cits in balance and QoL. The balance disorders have a high correlation among themselves and show how aspects of QoL.

This paper presents electrochemical experiments on natural pyrite that combine potentiostatic and voltammetric techniques. X-ray microanalysis is used as an auxiliary technique. The layer growth on pyrite surface is conducted in a wide range of pH and potential range: 3.4 <= pH <= 5.9 with E = 0.80 V (versus SHE), and 0.80 V <= E <= 1.00 V with pH 4.5 (versus SHE) in acetic acid-acetate buffer. This work is unique for two reasons: (1) phenomenological model about layer growth is applied and mathematical-physic consistence is verified and (2) Meyer's hypotheses of chemical mechanism are used to explain kinetic parameters of the phenomenological model. The process of milling wood is widely used in operations such as planing and manufacturing frames . Machines like planers , desengrossadeiras , routers , moldureiras and machining centers employ the milling process for cutting wood . In this work the process of milling CNC machining center of Eucalyptus grandis was studied because this is very much used in furniture , but without consistent studies on this process . This work a CNC machining center brand TECH Z1 for analysis of surface quality ( Ra ) in relation to the variation of cutting speed and feed in concordant and discordant tangential milling and face milling was used . We used Eucalyptus grandis . Four forward speeds ( 3, 5 , 7, and 9 m / min ) for four shear rates ( 5,9; 8,4; 10,9 and 13,4 m/s ) were used. Was used for testing a cutter finishing top speed steel with helical teeth 16mm in diameter . 6 repetitions for each test condition were performed . From the results it was observed that the best results for roughness Vc = 10,9 m / s were obtained for the milling concordant with the forward speed Vf = 7 m / min. As for Vf = 5 m / min the best finish was achieved with Vc = 8,4 m /s in discordant for milling . The feedrate and cutting influenced the roughness . The senses of concordant and discordant and cut the top and the top had a significant difference in roughness

Objectives: to identify the demographic profile and frequency of anemia and hemoglobinopathies, as a basis for future implementation of actions aimed at pregnant women in the public health domain. Method: this is a cross-sectional study developed with pregnant women attended in a university hospital at Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Blood samples were collected for the erythrogram analysis for detection of anemia and selective and specific tests for abnormal hemoglobin. The patients regarded as indigenous and mentally ill, as well as inmates, were excluded from the research, as they represent a vulnerable population which needs a cohort different from that of the sample. For data collection, a particular questionnaire was used. The research was approved by the Ethics Committee of Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS), under the Protocol 873/2006. Results: of the 215 pregnant women under study, 20% were adolescents; 36.3% had incomplete primary education; 53.0% were non-Caucasian; 43.3% were from Campo Grande, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil; and 21.1% were of European descent. 17.7% had some type of anemia and, in the evaluation of hemoglobinopathies, 4.7% of patients were detected with some abnormal hemoglobin, with the following frequencies: 3.3% with HbAS; 0.9% with HbAC; and 0.5% with intermediate β-thalassemia. Conclusion: the frequencies of anemia and hemoglobinopathy found in these pregnant women showed the importance of early diagnosis, revealing indicators able to provide a basis for preventive and assistance actions for adequate clinical monitoring, reducing maternal and neonatal morbimortality in the public health services. Descriptors: pregnant women; anemia; hemoglobinopathies; public health; nursing.

With the increase in world population and scarcity of natural resources, efficient use of fertilizers becomes necessary for intensive agriculture. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse at the Department of Agricultural Engineering, UNESP in Botucatu-SP. The treatments were derived from the combination of the soil salinity (E.C: 1.0, 3.0, 6.0, 9.0 and 12.0 dS m-1), Fertigation management (M1 =traditional and M2 = with control of the ionic concentration of the soil solution) and beet cultivars (C1= Early Wonder and C2 = Itapuã) in a 5x2x2 factorial design with four replications in a randomized block design. Throughout the cultivation, the following variables were evaluated: height, stem diameter, length and diameter of plant roots. The height of the plant presented differently according to the Fertigation management and sensitive to levels of electrical conductivity in the soil. The diameter of the roots showed reductions of 3.55 and 2.48 mm for C1 and C2, respectively, every unit increase in electrical conductivity (EC) to M1. Based on the functional relationship of the best adjustment between the diameter of the roots and electrical conductivity in M2 gave an estimated maximum diameter of 90.78 mm to 94.67 mm for C1 and C2.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of low back pain and some related variables among adults of both genders. Methods: Was conduct a cross-sectional study of population-based in the urban area of Presidente Prudente, São Paulo. The sample consisted of 743 adult residents for over two years in this city. Low back pain, quality of sleep and physical activity were collected through face to face interview at the residence of respondents. Was used the chi-square test to analyze the association between variables, later was created tree multivariate models with hierarchical inclusion of confounding factors. Results: The prevalence of low back pain reported last year was 50.2% (95% CI: 46.6, 53.8), and the last week 32.3% (95% CI: 28.9, 35.6). Was association among low back pain and females (p-value = 0.031), older age, lower education, altered sleep and overweight, the adjusted model found that people over the age of 45 years (45 to 59.9 years, OR = 13.1 [1.72-98.5] and ≥ 60 years, OR = 9.10 [1.15-71.7]), with some alteration of sleep (OR = 3.21 [1.84-5.61]) and obese (OR = 2.33 [1:26 to 4:33]) seems to be a risk group for low back pain. Conclusion: The prevalence of low back pain is high and obese people aged over 45 years, with any sleep disturbance are a group at higher risk for low back pain.
